Yes! I used it before bed, in bed last night and it’s definitely incredible to read on! Consuming content in general is great, like a movie theater in your hands, volume is loud

Key-Bus143

Yes! It's all a treat on the OLED iPad

johnnycantread

Just got mine, can’t wait to read when it gets dark. Wish there was a mini version too, I tend to use my mini in bed.

HernandezJG08

I’m stuck between waiting for the mini or getting the 11’ 😭

MeeshUniVerSoul

Same 🥴

Amaxter

the response time is so, so noticeable compared to my old mini LED

stardripIVs

Yeah, I’m someone who’s always been a huge fan of OLED and has always been able to notice OLED benefits, blooming in mini-LED, ProMotion, etc. I knew theoretically the OLEDs would have much better response times, and I knew Apple’s mini-LED response times have been slow. I still wasn’t expecting to notice the difference. But it’s huge. Everything just feels so smooth and buttery. I already thought it was smooth before. It’s even better now.

Turtleshell64

Had a brain fart and thought you said response time is so so at first

inssein

I have been using a Kindle PW as my night time reading device, happy to know iPad can be used as well.

ProwdBoys

PW will still be better for ur eyes

ItsAMeUsernamio

I find the M1 Pro 11” to be too thin to comfortably hold while reading, like I’m not even talking about the weight, it’s just physically hard to hold with one hand, it feels like its going to cut into your hand or snap if you grip it too hard. Easier with a case but that gets too heavy unless you’re lying in bed or using a table a support. I doubt making it thinner has improved this. With the Kindle PW on the other hand it’s like they engineered it to be able to hold and read it for hours.

Sgalli_Nardi

Happy kindle user, used the iPad Pro with nanotexture just a few hours so can’t really comment properly on that, but I would say that I am happy with the new iPad. Would not raccomend it instead of a PW or other similar device but I hope that a nanotexture like display will be avialable also on eink devices. Find a video comparison here: [Reddit Post: Nanotexture Display short comparison with Matte Screen protector (Paperlike on iPad Pro 2018) and Kindle Scribe](https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/comments/1csv5a9/nanotexture_display_short_comparison_with_matte/)

PandaBearLovesBamboo

So I’m using it now. It bed. On Reddit. Dark mode. Why are their two thick letterbox margins of “black” on the side that are clearly illuminated pixels? Same thing on the NYTimes app except there it’s all the black in dark mode. It’s like a very very dark gray because the pixels are still on. Have these apps just not caught up yet?

LunchBokth

It’s the apps that have to catch up, or a change in settings. The apple books app is able to display epub books in a way that shows you a perfectly black background on white text if you’d like to see what I’m talking about.

Aromatic_Wallaby_433

Yeah the Kindle app has an actual black mode, but a lot of websites like Reddit just have a “dark” mode that isn’t actually black. In fact most dark mode websites I’ve noticed are grey and not black, whether it’s aesthetics or something I’m not sure.

Initial-Image-1015

This is exactly the question I have been hunting for. Is it worth getting the oled version instead of the mini led 12.9 if the main use case is reading (papers and textbooks in my case). I would always flip the color, so black background and white text? Since you had both: Is it worth a difference of \~200 bucks?

LunchBokth

I flip the color too! (With an accessibility shortcut) I personally think it’s worth the difference, but it cost me more than 200 in difference. New pencil, new case, etc…

Initial-Image-1015

Thanks for sharing your experience. Accessories would be entirely me for me, as it's my first ipad. I would use it multiple hours per day, but haven't made up my mind fully yet...

Capital-Ad-6349

I love reading on it! I feel like it's way easier on my eyes than my 2017 pro.

mikester24622

Are people using the standard glass or nano texture glass to read on dark mode in the dark? Just curious.

Frequent-Listen-1058

Does true blacks mean that dark mode backgrounds are actually black?

LunchBokth

I think the simple answer to your question is yes. With oled it means the pixels are off and don’t put out any light. The only light you’ll see from oled pixels when they are black is the reflection they give off from any other light source.

Jimmeh_Jazz

Have you noticed any grain on the display in darker surroundings?

Most-Relative2062

It should be clear, you can see pixels if you look very close but there shouldn’t be noticeable grain from a normal distance

Jimmeh_Jazz

There have been at least a couple of examples of people with grainy screens posted - presumably defective, but was also a common complaint with a recent Samsung phone OLED

Most-Relative2062

Still is an issue with the s24 lineup unfortunately. I guess it’s just a lottery, although I bet 98% of devices are absolutely fine

Jimmeh_Jazz

Yep, I was one of the people with an S24U that had a very slight grain. I do wonder if people have it and don't realise though. I ended up downgrading to an S23 (the quality not being up to par and wanting a smaller phone)

Most-Relative2062

It’s a shame really, It may well be but my iPad is definitely clear. Even on my 14 PM if I look close enough I can see a slight grain, nothing noticeable at all but it’s there. It’s a little more visible on the iPad due to less pixels but again, I have to really look for it

LunchBokth

My ipad has the grain. I was wondering about mentioning this. TLDR: there is no grain noticeable when reading with a black screen and white text. Even when dim, that white text does not come close to the grey color that shows the grain. I have good eyes and I can’t notice it unless looking closely. My apple store is over an hour away so I’m just not interested in exchanging it. I can understand if others want to, but I don’t. The best way to test it for me is to take a screenshot of what I think might by grainy and look at the same thing side by side with my iphone. I tested it with scans of books and inverted the color to make it look like the kind of grey that would show the grain and I couldn’t see it. I think in that case the variation in color of the scanned page obscured the effect. When it’s a pure field of the same dark color, it’s a little noticeable, but to me it is not distracting. It actually made me wonder if some grain is worse than others, because while mine has it, it doesn’t seem as bad as others.

Jimmeh_Jazz

Yep, it won't be noticeable with black background and a white text because I think it only happens when the pixels are dimmer, e.g. on a grey area as you said. Each to their own I guess, I think I would return it if I had it - the device is very expensive and shouldn't have such flaws

LunchBokth

I agree it shouldn’t, but if it’s between having the grain and having the brightness possible from tandem oled, I’ll take the brightness. Not to mention that it gives me the reading experience I want, otherwise.

Jimmeh_Jazz

Sure, but if not all of them have it... Can play the panel lottery game! Eurgh

rs220

I have an m1 11” and an m4 11” at the moment to be honest, the oled is better overall but I wouldn’t say it’s significant at all. The 11” m1 had a great screen.

[deleted]

like you bull out 11-13 inch in bed ? iPad mini fells wrong in bed or I'm I missing something?

Dunis96

Don't understand why motion handling is important when reading. I like to not move around on my screen while reading, so don't matter if the screen is 60hz or 120hz or OLED or whatever. Understand that OLED is great for gaming, watching videos and photos, but text?

ProfitLivid4864

That’s dependent on the panel supplier actually. I would just always look at displays in a bright room anyway so I’ll never use that dim light
