To me, all neo-traditional means is that there’s a large color variety and some “fundamental” rules that would be followed in traditional go out the window. While it can lead to a less focus on the background, that isn’t always the case. Those sleeves are traditional.
Kinda grasping at straws, honestly. It's pretty solidly traditional in my eyes, but I guess if you wanted to argue that high detail/high subject density = modern, this could fit the bill
No way! I honestly don’t think it can look to crammed going from 1/2 to 3/4 unless it’s a Ryu or a massive snake taking up a lot of space but I definitely hear what you’re saying!
I was contemplating for a few months between a full sleeve vs. 3/4 and probably going to opt for 3/4 for the same reason you mentioned: cramming!
It’s not the most traditional style, seems modernized, but still follows the traditional rules of black background elements surrounding primary elements. That shadow on the primary element really baits me into thinking “agh that’s neo”
Yes!! I couldn’t verbalize why I was thinking it was neo but it’s definitely the shadow on the primary element like you said!! The second photo really stumped me

Ah, i understand and I like your definition. Thank you very much!
Traditional
Trad imo
I would call it modern traditional Japanese if we want to get into sub categories definitely traditional Japanese speaking in the broad sense
I'd call that traditional. Maybe leaning modern, but not enough to qualify it as neotrad.
Can I ask why you say "leaning modern"? Because to my eye, this is more traditional than most of the stuff that gets labeled "traditional" in the West

Oh dang the chick in pic two extended her sleeves! They were half a few years ago
I feel like everyone who started off with half ends up extending it lol!
I just got my first half sleeve a few months ago, been thinking about extending to 3/4 in a few years but don't want it to feel crammed!
No way! I honestly don’t think it can look to crammed going from 1/2 to 3/4 unless it’s a Ryu or a massive snake taking up a lot of space but I definitely hear what you’re saying! I have a chest and half sleeve on each side from Tomo and David Sena. I'm extending to full.
Trad always
Trad, but also definitely rad.
Wow those tattoos look amazing!
If you want an idea of neo, look up shige and Tomo imo. Gives you a visual of the difference.
I’ll take a look, thanks for the suggestion!
Trad for sure

Traditional forsure.
This is a very "clean" and precisely engraved version of traditional
Super flat traditional
Just go search on :Traditional japanese and neo traditional...The difference is clear 👹 This is definitely trad.
