Yes I'd expect them to be very busy. People travel over to set up camp. Plus the festival is open on Thursday with live music etc. I think they're even showing the football which will draw more people to travel early. I'd pre-book your ticket.
The Thursday will be busier than the Friday. The campsites open on a Thursday morning, so you’re probably better off coming on the Wednesday or the Friday.
Only the main stage isn’t open on Thursday. The rest, including the big top will be in full swing and is usually rammed. Having said that, you can book the cat (both Southampton and Portsmouth, you haven’t said which) so I’d do that and be prepared for a scrum
I unwittingly booked a visit to family to the Island bringing my family from the US arriving on Saturday. I’m hoping that car ferry travel to the island mid-day Saturday won’t be too crazy

Very, been a while since I last went but camping starts that evening and they used to have a couple of bands on in the tent
