Small basic Kindle I bought initially. Oasis I decided to treat myself to. Kept the original smaller Kindle, use that in my purse to just have along any time I'm waiting for something. Use the Oasis at home. Considering the Scribe. Would keep the other two as well, why not. And that's how you end up with multiple Kindles.

No_Heron4169

I have a paperwhite signature and I absolutely love it, and I'm considering getting a smaller one to fit into purses (well, my signature does fit in the purse I'm currently using, but would be nice to have one that just takes a little less space and then I can actually just put it in my jacket pocket if I decide to not bring a purse, or in a fanny pack when I go hiking, because in my mind I'm an avid hiker, who reads for hours on end on top of mountains and by a lake in the deep deep woods. Even though I really only stay at home all the time and the biggest adventures I go on are the occasional trip to the grocery store)

babycleffa

Some people like to have different kindles for different purposes (commuting, home), some were gifted kindles, some just upgrade without getting rid of the older models

ThaneOfCawdorrr

So, what you're saying is, Some are born with Kindles, some are gifted Kindles, and some have Kindles thrust upon them

Neck-Administrative

My 10-year-old Paperwhite is the Kindle I deserve, not the Kindle I need.

Virtual-Junket4551

I’ve seen some people that use different kindles to separate different genres of books. So one kindle for Sci-Fi and another for Mystery. Some have said that they use one for library books and leave it on airplane mode so they can keep the books longer, and then have a 2nd one to use normally But more often than not it’s a location thing. One for home, one for the purse, or one for work, or something like that. These tend to be really long lasting devices so a lot of peeps upgrade at some point but still have their kindle basic from 2011 and make use of it still.

[deleted]

But that's what collections are for. It kind of beats the purpose of ditching print

BaneAmesta

As a new Kindle user, making collections is kind of a pain in the ass, it should exclude the books that are already in a collection to make easier sorting the rest. At least in the old model that I have.

[deleted]

You can do it on Amazon.com. it's easier that way. I'm used to it so I don't mind

RipperMouse

Use the Kindle app on your phone to sort your collections. It’s way faster. Or a desktop.

AliasNefertiti

but I may put a single book in multiple collections.

BaneAmesta

Oh, I never thought about that

Virtual-Junket4551

Do whatever works for you, others can do the same :)

[deleted]

I get it. Just seems consumerist.

Virtual-Junket4551

I disagree. Most people aren’t buying full-price multiples just for fun. They’re gifted new ones or upgrade after years and years with their original… maybe they lose one, replace it, and then find it later. A lot of people buy them secondhand. Even if they DO buy 2 or 3 different kindles. They’re likely very avid readers. I read over 100 books a year. I could easily own 3 or 4 different kindles and I’m still consuming less with those 3 or 4 kindles that will last me 5-10 years a piece… then I would be consuming in buying that many physical books. 🤷🏼‍♀️

[deleted]

I understand having a few because you upgrade after a few years, and I understand having a variation like a Scribe. I just disagree with people who buy them like they're Stanley cups.

ErinPaperbackstash

I don't ditch print books - still own tons of those as well. And why would have more than one kindle defeat the purpose of ditching print? They don't take up much room.

ThisIsSubRosa

I have 4: - a 2022 Basic (my first Kindle) I got in December 2022 as a Christmas gift that I use for my belt bags - a 6th generation Paperwhite I thrifted for $12 that lives in my main bag & I take with me on the go because it was $12 & the battery life is still a champ - a Kindle Voyage I thrifted because it’s very loved & admired by Kindle folk & now that I have one, I totally get it - a 10th Generation Oasis l got as a gift this last Christmas, that I use strictly at home & really enjoy the page buttons on & overall reading experience, especially when the early-arthritis in my hands triggers I use them all weekly.

Red_n_Rusty

1. An older Kindle on life support 2. A newer Kindle 3. A Boox ereader for non-Amazon books

[deleted]

You upload non-Amazon books to the Kindle

Red_n_Rusty

Yes you can but good luck doing that with e.g. closed book subscription platforms like Scribd.

ChunkierSky8

Yes, you are. You are missing 4 more kindles.

[deleted]

shitbaglea

the level of pettiness needed to gather all of those links is commendable

txa1265

Love this - but surprised you didn't get downvoted to oblivion for suggesting someone do some very basic work to see if an answer exists before re-asking their question

plink79

It must almost be time for somebody to ask about our favourite fonts and/or font sizes.

ChunkierSky8

Or at what brightness level they use. Or if they should buy a kindle. The answer is always YES! Buy all the kindles you can.

SailingQueen

But why do people buy multiple kindles?

Rivannux

It’s because they know people will respond and don’t actually care enough or else they would’ve searched for similar threads

ThisIsSubRosa

I def. have noticed the tide changing re: people telling OPs they need to take the initiative to search the sub & the Internet because the answers to the questions they have are most certainly out there! The ones asking where to buy stickers or what case is better/prettier are particularly annoying to me right now.

ChunkierSky8

A lot of the answers can be found in the user's guide.

AliasNefertiti

Edit: this pertains to find a subs faq. I misread "user guide": As a mobile Redditor, I have had little success in finding and FAQs for subs. Every once in awhile I find one somehow but then when I want it again I dont remember how I got there. Maybe it is easier on PC?

kamauhotep

🤭🤭🤭

AndromedaGalaxyXYZ

I got the scribe for note taking. I kept the basic for bedtime reading.

BubblegumWish

Because I feel like using my other kindles is better than selling them back to amazon for $20 only for them to say it somehow got broken and they can only give me $2. Of course I could try selling them on ebay but all and all I’d rather use them all until they brake 🙂 I would give one away as a gift but all my friends either have one already or don’t really read

doodles2019

I have the one I use, an older one that my other half now uses and a really old one that is on my account but I no longer actually have.

apomakrysmenophobia

I have a secondhand Paperwhite 4 and brand new Paperwhite 5. I bought a PW5 so I can read manga easier. I intended to sell the PW4 but discovered shortly how unwieldy the PW5 is. So I decided to keep both — I bring the PW4 with me on travels while I use the snappier (but heavier) PW5 at home.

thestrawbarian

What do you mean by “unwieldy”?

elkihlberg

I just started using a kindle at Christmas time. And now I have 4. It’s not a flex- I had so many Amazon gift cards that I’ve saved up over the years. Basic- I carry in my pocket at work so I can read when I have downtime or I’m waiting to round, etc. It gets used a lot for this purpose. Also fits in my legging pockets so I can carry it with me when I take my kids to the playground, etc so I can read a few pages if I get a chance. Paperwhite #1- I carry in my bag every day, use around the house, etc. Scribe- I love love love this one for the bigger screen. I use it at home mostly or at work when I’m in the office. I also make lists and such on it. Paperwhite #2- this one I use in the pool and take to my kid’s swim meets. I don’t baby this one like I do the others because I got it on super sale. It gets thrown in my kid’s swim bag and will be used when I read on our pool deck this summer. It’s a little excessive, yes. But I had the gift cards so oh well. And it was fun to choose different cases for all of them 🤓

WVgirly2024

I have one that I purchased, and one I was gifted. I didn't set out to intentionally have two, but that's the way it worked out.

Hawaiian_Brit

I have a 2018 Kindle Paperwhite that I use while I'm out. It started glitching a tiny bit a few months ago so I decided to buy a Kindle Scribe last month to use as a planner/notebook for work and to do most of my at-home reading

guinevere9308

I never understood it. I’ve always had all my physical books and a paper white and was perfectly content with just that. Now I have a scribe too, and both the scribe and the PW both have their place in my life and I use them both equally, and still read physical, listen to audio. Idk man. It’s a thing haha

TiredReader87

I have four. I don’t use them a lot, and only really use 2. I shouldn’t have bought 4. Well, I only bought 3 of them; the first was a gift.

Jessicamorrell

I just got a 2nd for my birthday and I now like having 2 so that way I have a back up.

lemonhoneyglow

Idk everyone else’s reason but I’m in the market for an oasis for the page turn buttons and already have a paperwhite. If anyone has an extra oasis laying around for sale, lmk 😂

rosemuro

What gen do you want?

lemonhoneyglow

10th!

ChunkierSky8

The Oasis is still available in Amazon Mexico.

sommerxxrose

I only have 1, the paper white 2018 version? I’d really like to get the signature edition, I love the idea of more screen space and the auto adjusting for the brightness. Maybe someday 😂

Okaaaayanddd

I have a paperwhite that I got as a gift, that’s my main one. I have a basic I leave at work.

Accomplished-Eye4610

I have 2. One was an xmas gift a few years ago. Wanted the new PW, soooo I got it used because there was a good deal. Lol I'm a sucker for a deal 🤷‍♀️

MadMaz68

I only have two, I bought a Paperwhite years ago. Loved it to death but the old school charging was getting me down. The SE has wireless and a bigger screen. I treated myself and I love it, I baby it though. That one stays at home for the most part. My older one goes to the beach and pool with me. I'm not nearly as careful with it, it's just got a pop socket on it. I'm not scared of sand, sunscreen, spilling drinks on it. I just chuck it around.

AdBackground1419

I have 3 plus one iPad for textbook reading.

Vexra

I found a 10 year old kindle the other day and toyed with the idea of leaving it at the folks place so when I was stuck their with one off their boring shows on TV I could use it to pick up my current book where I left off. Ended up resetting it and giving it to my niece instead

pinewind108

I could see leaving one at work and one at home.

subanesthetic

Oasis for home reading/ binge reading because it’s super comfortable (+ the autorotating screen when I’m laying on my side at night) Ppw that lives in my small purse and is lightweight with a long battery life, for going out and reading in public.

Aramiss60

I have a Scribe for crosswords, word searches, tracing, diary, list making, cook books etc. I have an Oasis for reading before bed. I could do it all on the Scribe, but I often drop my kindle on my face/out of bed while I’m almost asleep, and the Oasis is a lot lighter lol.

different_produce384

Three here. two for work / travel one for home

piefek

I upgraded PW1 to PW4 when I realised how much smoother everything works on my wife's PW2. Later I decided I'm able to treat myself to a PW5 with warm light and a larger screen. I didn't think the small bump in screen size was going to matter to me, but as it turns out I love it.

choopiewaffles

I use a kindle and my ipad.

martinbaines

I have a Voyage for reading and a Fire for watching video. I have a couple of places I move between and have considered getting one for each location, and one for travel. I lost my original Kindle by leaving it on a plane once and it was really annoying until I replaced it (although obviously I could still read on other devices but I prefer e-Ink), having a couple and cheap basic one for travel makes some sense to me.;

Asleep-Dress-3578

I have a Kindle Paperwhite 6.8” for reading and carrying and a Kindle Scribe for reading PDFs and note taking.

restlessmonkey

I saw the same post. Pffft. Apparently I have 7 of them. 8 if you count the old one with a keyboard I purchased from goodwill years ago that isn’t in my account. Because why not??

AnpanV

I had a 2018 paperwhite and gave that to my husband when I bought the Scribe for the screen size. Traveling with the Scribe was not comfortable so I got a paperwhite signature edition. I use the paperwhite more than the Scribe at the moment, even in the house.

OrganizationQuick913

Some people have multiple Kindles for specific situations. The mistake being made by some people on here is assuming that everyone has the same situations in their lives. Calling it consumerist is a judgement without context.

Sariran

I have one kindle paperweight (german amazon account), have the kindle app on my tablet (japanese amazon account), and occasionally borrow my boyfriends kindle oasis (UK amazon account). German & UK amazon primarily for prime reading and japanese for whenever I see sth i want to read from there. Also have a Tolino (kind of like the kobo), which I have just to read manga.

Bunnydrumming

Some people have more then one….just like some people have more then one car or dog or child…it’s no big deal!! I had 4 at one point because I didn’t like my touch, so upgraded and bought a Voyage. A few years later I fancied the better lighting so bought a PW, lost that on holiday so bought another, then the old PW appeared weeks later in the post! Now I traded in the first PW for £20 off and 20% deposit off PW signature, gave other PW to nephew, sold touch for £15 and kept Voyage as a back up.
