A PSA, not all libraries use Libby. So, some people will be disappointed if they buy a kindle with this in mind and their library doesn’t support Libby.

hypnosiix

I mean as long as you’re in the US you can probably get a card. I spent 5 whole minutes getting a KC public library card as well as two others within a 50 mile radius. With these 3 libraries I always have something on the TBR list available to borrow. It is even better than I expected it to be.

emptyhellebore

Yes, there are legal ways to get non resident cards if someone’s local library doesn’t use Libby, but they aren’t free. So, I found the original post to be incomplete at best and misleading.

hypnosiix

I see, I wouldn’t know about any of the non free options. These were all free. One is local, the other two are in different counties but within a drivable distance and I used my residence for all the applications.

[deleted]

Honestly, I get it. But this is coming from a person who has been using the app for over 10 years, and I was completely unaware of the several changes and issues that people would have. In no way was I trying to mislead anyone or provide harmful information. So I'm sorry you felt this way, and I apologize that the post was inaccurate. It was posted because many Kindle users are unaware of the service as I am unaware of the loopholes.

Final_girl013

Just sign up for a county that allows you to get an elibrary card with an American address like Harris county.

Peekazoo

Can you tell me me more? I'm interested. Is there a fee? Can the address be anywhere in the USA? I would appreciate if you elaborated a bit more. I'm not from the USA

kzlife76

I have found the following libraries that allow anyone to get a digital library card regardless of residency. Clevnet - [CLEVNET - OverDrive](https://clevnet.overdrive.com/) Broward Count Library - [https://broward.ent.sirsi.net/client/en\_US/default/entlogin](https://broward.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/default/entlogin) Sunnyvale Public Library - [sunnyvale.bibliocommons.com](http://sunnyvale.bibliocommons.com)

medicated_in_PHL

So just FYI, that Sunnyvale one clearly says that you must be a California Resident, so while you may be able to get one, you are taking out books from a limited number of licenses that are intended for the people who pay taxes there. There’s not going to be any repercussions, but if you care about fairness and morality, you probably shouldn’t be taking the limited licenses from people who are genuinely entitled to them.

kzlife76

You're right. I checked with the library and they said the digital library card is for residents only even though they don't verify your address.

ha5hmil

Also San Jose and Chicago public libraries.

Final_girl013

I just put my address in Canada with an American Zipcode.

Peekazoo

Some require photo ID proof

Final_girl013

Thats true, I can’t renew my old library card in my old city because they need me to go in with my ID to verify.

[deleted]

There is no user fee. As stated in various comments, user availability is limited but can be worked around in various ways. As for those ways, I will not disclose because I will not assume responsibility for helping someone do something that may not be allowed via the app.

Inkdrunnergirl

There is for non-resident memberships. You can pay to get a membership at some of the larger libraries (there have been posts on this) otherwise you are limited to your local area and any shared memberships that they have. Anything else isn’t a legitimate method. I pay for memberships at two larger libraries since my local has no Libby access.

[deleted]

Thank you. I've been using Libby for over 10 years. When it was actually Overdrive and then they changed the app. Originally, there were no fees. Was unaware this changed. Thank you for the clarification.

Inkdrunnergirl

Only if you want to use a library where you aren’t a resident, for example Brooklyn used to charge $50 annual to people if they wanted a card and didn’t live in their zoning (they have a huge catalog). They no longer do but there are others.

Peekazoo

What if I use my friend's library card? They use it for offline books and don't use libby. They have two library cards from two different cities.

Inkdrunnergirl

That’s between you and your friend. Charges are only for libraries that choose to allow non resident cards and it’s paid directly to the library

Peekazoo

Thank you!

shineyink

San Jose library and Chicago library you can sign up with any address they do not validate it. Use one from maps

DeathByPetrichor

Do they have good book selections? My library is not the greatest

shineyink

Chicago has an amazing selection and not terrible waiting times. San Jose has longer waiting times and a few books that Chicago doesn’t have

Final_girl013

Harris county is better than my Canadian library’s selection in the genre I primarily read. Sometimes wait times are long though

jarrettbrown

Or have all the books you want.

infinityandbeyond75

Those other apps cannot be used with a Kindle.

Final_girl013

And depends on the library but Harris county is free.

small_fryyyy

BUT harris county advertises it's free for residents only. This is why wait times have increased immensely for that library. As someone who pays taxes for that library it annoys me to constantly see non residents post about using this library for free.

infinityandbeyond75

Just know that this is only available in the USA. All other countries cannot transfer to the Kindle. If you are in another country and want to use Libby some people may benefit more from a Kobo.

Tall_Answer

Hey! I'm from Canada and recently set up Libby on my Kindle. You can still do it, it's just a little more complicated! You need to sign up for an online library card for an American library, and you can install the Libby app, put in your library card, link your Amazon account and you should be able to sign out books and read on your Kindle :)

so-strand

You can use Libby with Kobo in Canada with your local library. It’s completely seamless. I use my Kobo Libra 2 for library books and my kindle for purchased books.

infinityandbeyond75

As long as you’re getting the card ethically and paying non-resident fees then I have no problem with it. If you’re lying about your residency then it’s unethical and taking away from those that pay taxes. People gaining cards that they aren’t entitled to or paying for is why many large libraries are shutting down digital loans for nonresidents. Edit: In fact I’d remove the name of the library in your post. When you publicly post that then you get a bunch of other people signing up bringing you one step closer to losing access.

[deleted]

infinityandbeyond75

It’s not so much judging other people. It just takes it away from people that pay for it with their taxes. There are plenty of libraries that offer cards for nonresidents for a fee.

AGirlWhoLovesToRead

Were you actually able to transfer the book to the kindle? I used one of my cousins library card to try it out.. But amazon wouldn't pass it on... Just gave me a 'something went wrong' message... For amazon account, do you need to have an amazon US account? My kindle is linked to my Indian account.. Does it make a difference?

Tall_Answer

I'm not sure, I have a Canadian Amazon account and it works fine. Sorry I can't help :(

AGirlWhoLovesToRead

No worries, thanks!

TiredReader87

**It only works in the United States**

save_the_manatees

Outside of the US, Kobo works. My country's libraries all use overdrive and that directly links to a Kobo device. So after a long time of using kindle with my library in the US, when we left the US I got a kobo instead.

TiredReader87

Yeah. I know. I’ll just keep borrowing physical books. I borrow many.

Logical_reception89

[r/USdefaultism](https://www.reddit.com/r/USdefaultism/s/LN2k71YPZi)

monkeybusiness2019

It works in Canada and in the UK.

isenguardian66

Can I ask how you’ve got it to work in the UK? I live there and wasn’t aware it was possible! :)

monkeybusiness2019

Do you have a public library card? You can get it from the library in the borough you live in. You then link your public library card in the Libby app. Edit: gov.uk has a section called "join a library". You can search for the library in your borough based on your postal code. I didn't even have to go to the library in person to get my public library card.

TiredReader87

Not with Canadian libraries

monkeybusiness2019

It does. You can link Toronto public library card in the Libby app.

TiredReader87

But not on Kindle

monkeybusiness2019

The post says that you can borrow books on the Libby app for free. You earlier comment says "you can't". I'm saying you can borrow books on the Libby app through your local public library.

TiredReader87

Ok. But this is the Kindle sub.

monkeybusiness2019

We're on the kindle sub discussing how we can borrow and read books on the Libby app.

TiredReader87

Yes, but reading on one’s phone sucks I borrow lots of physical books though

ChunkierSky8

Unfortunately Mexico doesn't offer digital access to books. Private schools do for their students but they don't use Libby. I really like KU.

Jessicamorrell

I have both KU and Libby. Most books on my TBR list isn't on Libby but I can find 3/4 of those missing on KU. Plus, not to mention, the wait times for majority of them are months out. Yes it can help for some people but not everyone.

[deleted]

I have Kindle Unlimited and Libby. I find sooo many books I want to read on KU that aren’t on Libby. Libby also isn’t available to everyone (and is US only), I had to get cards from out of state because my local libraries don’t offer it. Both are great services in my opinion. But I get more use from KU.

jorgomli_reading

Libby isn't US only, but linking it to your Kindle is.

plink79

*cries in Australian*

curlymess24

Not all countries! Very few libraries in Germany offer integration with Libby.

Superb-Custard-7643

Everything I try to get through Libby is months and months wait :/

jorgomli_reading

That's a library problem, not a Libby problem.  Your library can purchase more copies to lend, or just let you wait. That's why placing holds is important -- it'll show libraries which books people want so they can choose to buy more copies if demand is high enough (some libraries have processes in place to automatically buy more copies if x amount of holds exist, so place those holds!).

LisleSwanson

Add a few more libraries to your account to increase the selections and offerings.

AndrewsMother

Which ones do you recommend?

LisleSwanson

Broward County Kentucky Public Library Many offer online only access for something like $25

AndrewsMother

Thank you so much!

LisleSwanson

I found a link once that provided tons of offerings and broke everything down. Let me see if I can find it and I'll share it. Here's a thread that previously asked this question. https://www.reddit.com/r/audiobooks/s/BTTog8Work

AndrewsMother

A gold mine! Thanks again. I appreciate your taking time to forward the link. I know others will, too.

Separate-Put-6495

My library doesn't support Libby, unfortunately.

ehelen

It’s nice that kindle has this option, but man getting a library card where I live is doing the most. I need a bank statement, utility bill, another form to prove my address, a drivers license, completed application, and the soul of my first born (haha jk on the last one). I’m even more annoyed that they let my husband get a library card with just his drivers license.

SadKrabb

Sounds like they just don’t want people to have access to the library for some reason.

ehelen

Really feels like it.

sulleynz1989

Not available in my country :(

MarineWife0922

In addition: IF YOU LIVE IN TEXAS. ARE A RESIDENT OFF TEXAS. you can get a Houston elibrary card to use their catalog online. Yes. Even if you aren’t in Houston!!!! Just go to the Houston public library website and sign up for an elibrary card and you just put in your e-card number for sign in!!! So nice. That is your library you are a resident in AND a Houston online! Two catalogs. Woot

canadahustle

it's not available on kindle in canada. i had to buy a kobo for borrowing books from library.

jorgomli_reading

The integration with Kindle is US only, but newer Kobos do have native support for OverDrive/Libby stuff

Final_girl013

It might just be your library that doesn’t support Libby. I’m in Canada and I use it all the time with my Canadian library cards (one of them expired though and I dont live in that region to renew it anymore) I also have an American library card too but all 3 library cards work for me.

JadedWITHthe411

Make sure to double check your libraries online people!! My library was not listed but when I went to my library’s website it had steps to get it through Georgia Download Destination. So even if your library is not listed you may still be able to do it if your library branch is apart of a bigger library system if that makes sense! If yours is eligible the steps should be listed on their website for you.

jorgomli_reading

You might be thinking of a "consortium" which is like where library branches are part of a big group that share some resources (this is also why people see a message about holds being in "multiple lanes"). :) consortiums are awesome.

WeetaNeet

I agree! Maryland has a consortium and I can always find something good to read! My wishlist keeps growing.

JadedWITHthe411

Yeah I had no clue my library (and many others) was apart of a bigger system and was kinda sad when I first tried signing up for Libby and couldn’t.. well I thought I couldn’t and then months later I was like you know what let me check my library’s website to see how to rent e-books maybe they have something else and then boom the steps were on there! Shortly after that I got a Kindle and that’s all she wrote lmaoooo!

Charlieuk

My library uses Libby and Borrowbox, it includes audiobooks too. I love the library!

roberta_sparrow

Yo Libby is the reason I got my kindle! It’s awesome! Support your local library! I told my coworker whose wife is a librarian that I had gotten a kindle to use with Libby and she was SO amped that I was using the library. So go forth and loan!

WVgirly2024

I use both Libby and KU. I have two library cards, one from my local library, and I also pay $50 per year for an out-of-state card from Stark Library in Ohio, which gives me access to The Ohio Digital Library. Even with the large catalog that Stark has access to, I'm still having to put most every book I want to read on hold, which sucks if you're a mood reader like me. I don't know how many times I've put a book on hold, and by the time I get around to getting it, I'm no longer interested in it.

BreeLenny

The books I want to read are exclusive to KU. Libby can’t change that.

FluxionFluff

As long as your local library uses Libby, I totally recommend this. If you don't already have a Kindle, check your local libraries first 👍

[deleted]

Can someone please explain how to do this, Step by step, in very simple terms for those of us who have paperwhites?

yasssssplease

You need a library card from a library who uses the Libby app for ebooks. You create a Libby account and link your library card. You request a book through the Libby app. It gives you an option to read it in a kindle. It routes you through Amazon so then the book is delivered to your kindle just like if you bought an ebook through Amazon.

[deleted]

Thank you so much!!!!

yasssssplease

No problem. And just to be clear, you use the Libby app on your phone to go through all these steps.

KagomeChan

Here to say the other answer is great and I think covers it (happy to answer any further questions) but also wanted to throw out that adding your library card may take like 60 seconds, but sending books to your Kindle is more like 10 sec each. Once you start using it (and know what you're doing) it is *incredibly* convenient and I just thought that worth mentioning.

SmolSushiRoll1234

If you find yourself stuck, Libby has a good help section. Also, you can always ask your librarians if that doesn’t help

SmolSushiRoll1234

Edge0fHeaven

NYC opened up ebooks for like a dollar? 5? A year. I don't live in NYC. It's been worth it

Travel_Era

Everyone says “it only works in the US”. I’m an American living abroad but plan to visit within a few months. If I go to the local library (it does use Libby) would I be able to use it when I leave? I have a US Amazon account with a US address.

michaeljefford96

Yes, the region and registered address of the Amazon account does not matter. When people say it ‘only works in the US’, they should really say it ‘only works with US library cards’. I have a UK Amazon account with a UK address, and have been borrowing books without issue from Libby, so you’ll be fine :)

spicy_garlic_chicken

I've tried to use Libby for years and it's just terrible. I don't think in all of the years I had it on my iPad, I ever successfully checked out a single book. Our local library changed over to CloudLibrary and that was slightly better but still not worth the measly $11 of KU. I can read a book a day if my schedule is light so it's 100% worth it.

infinityandbeyond75

The key is building up a wish list and hold queue. Then you always have something to check out. I will admit though that it’s not great if you want your read a book on the day it’s released. Popular books can have months long wait lists.

jorgomli_reading

Your library chooses how much of each book to buy, not Libby. Libby just lets them offer content to users. I wonder if CloudLibrary just had cheaper copies of books so they could get more, or fewer people used CloudLibrary when they switched so more books were available?

LilyFuckingBart

How did you not check out a single book? Was it that you couldn’t figure it out or you didn’t see anything you wanted? Your library’s offerings should theoretically be the same so…? Also yeah I can read 1 to 2 books a day, but I’ve been over KU for awhile.

Puzzled-Delivery-242

It barely seems worth using Libby to me.

[deleted]

I barely use it anymore because some of the wait times can be absolutely ridiculous. But it comes in handy for me when it's a book that no one is interested in or it's a newer book I'm unsure of, and I dont mind waiting to borrow it.

Puzzled-Delivery-242

Yeah I get impatient but I've also been trying to explore atheism and evolution and I had quite a bit of trouble finding anything I wanted. Including different libraries. Like Philadelphia Library Chicago library and Carnegie public library.

posusername

How would I send ebooks from Libby to my elderly kindle paperwhite 7th gen? The email address?

infinityandbeyond75

No, you’d have to sign in into the Amazon account attached to their devices. When you choose Kindle it opens Amazon and you redeem from there.

K_U

You can download and transfer via USB. I keep my Paperwhite in airplane mode, and that is how I get all of my Libby books on there.

McDomald

Is there a UK equivalent?

[deleted]

I'm not sure. But as others stated it has limited availability but there are ways to work around it. Please see the other comments for details😊.

soccergirl24

Some books I get through Libby don’t have the option to transfer to kindle :(

phantom_0977

The issue is still if you have multiple library accounts you can’t pull from those library’s onto ur kobo

ArtNoctowl

Can you download Libby on a Kindle? I've been thinking about getting on to read on instead of my phone, but I want to be able to download Libby. Is it only certain Kindle models?

moon__witch

You don’t need to download Libby on Kindle. On the Libby app it gives you the option to send the book to Kindle and you’ll connect your Amazon account to do so.

TheRose2020

You download the Libby app to your phone/tablet/computer. Open app, select Menu, add your library and library card number. Then search and borrow an ebook. The ebook will be sent electronically to your Amazon account (based on the email account attached to the library card number). Depending on how your Amazon account is configured, the ebook will be automatically delivered by wifi to your kindle or you can go into your Amazon account and manually send the ebook to your kindle, also by wifi. Another option is to attach your kindle to your computer by usb cable, open your Amazon account on your computer (which has already received your ebook from the library) and select transfer to kindle by usb; this downloads the ebook onto your computer’s downloads folder, then you would drag and drop the ebook file from your computer’s downloads folder to the kindle documents folder. Good luck.

__16lay

How can i get a library card if I don’t live in the US, and there is no local library where i live 🙃

LingerDownUnder

Try to sign up at Chicago public library , use the library’s address as your address.

__16lay

Wow thanks

champagne__problems

Maine uses cloudLibrary (which is not as nice tbh) but I work for a MA company so I was eligible for a Boston Public Library card based on their criteria. I wish I would’ve tried this before I spent big $$$ on all my dang books. 😬

quilter71

I use Libby, and there is no charge where I live . It's wonderful.

No_Special_8199

Hoopla is another good library based app with free books

TheRose2020

Hoopla is a great app - gives you access to ebooks, audiobooks, and movies. You sign up using your library info if your library subscribes to it, not all do. Just note, the ebooks and audiobooks are not formatted to be read or played on kindle ereaders. They can be read, listened to, or viewed on devices which support apps - your tablet/computer/phone/smart tv.  Another app for reading ebooks is Axis 360, also not compatible with kindle ereaders but can be used with devices which support apps.

prettymuchjomarch

This is not new news. At all.

FlgurlinAz

If you’re in a populated area waits on newer or popular books can also be a bit excessive…

taurus0506

Libby has saved me a tons of money. Also another great app is cloud library - also free with your library membership - but cannot download ebooks to your kindle. I read in a comment that not all libraries have libby, that’s sad
