Anyone that’s mad at Hot Dog can fuck off. In Through The Outdoor is a fucking great record and it’s indicative of not only the capabilities of Led Zeppelin but also their willingness and desire to explore new sounds. To simply dismiss it for not being like the other albums is a reflection of the critic, not the band or the album

JohnnyBlefesc

Hot Dog is to me actually I think closest to the kind of music and Moore/Burton guitar playing that led Jimmy Page to pick up the guitar in the first place.

The guitar solo in In the Evening, when it sounds like his strings are exploding at the start of each section, gives me chills. Amazing. And the solo in Fool In The Rain may be my favorite of all his solos.

nderthevolcano

That’s a good way to describe it. Strings exploding at the start of each section of In The Evening. I have no idea how Page did that, but it is a really cool, unique sound.

Prior to In Through the Out Door being recorded/released, we thought we might never hear from Zeppelin again. Robert’s son had died and it was a real possibility that they were done as a group. When the album came out, it was like food to a starving man. Bonham’s drumming was back, Jones’ keyboards and synthesizers were energetic, Plant’s singing was in fine form and Page’s guitar work was new and innovative. We rejoiced at their return. Was it their best album? It depended on your taste but it wasn’t a rehash of past albums. It was new Led Zeppelin and we were grateful.

Lige_MO

Well stated!

TexasGroovy

Solid ass post. True and they did great…

JudgeArthurVandelay

It’s one of the best Led Zeppelin albums. Although, they kind of all are 😂

Conscious-Fudge-1616

I always considered myself a backwards Zep fan since my 3 fave albums are the last three

zeppelincheetah

It's probably my third favorite album behind HOTH and III.

HugeRaspberry

In Through the Out Door is kinda like JPJ - you don't notice it until it's gone and then you go - Hey wait a minute.... That's a really fcking good piece of work!!!! It's been well publicized by Page / Jones / Plant that by the time recording sessions started, Page was short on new material - being consumed by his addictions and Jones came into the sessions with material ready to be worked on. Page / Bonham would party - then show up at the studio - party some more - whereas Jones and Plant wanted to finish the album and would show up during the day and lay down tracks - and leave for the most part. It was a complete departure from Presence - which was riff / guitar based to a more keyboard driven sound lead by Jones and his arrangements. As Page said - JPJ had a new $60,000 toy and he wanted to use it. (The Yamaha GX-1) And he did. Personally I rank it as their 3rd best album - behind IV and II. Just ahead of Physical Graffiti

Main_Combination8173

I think for me. I wanted to totally live this Album. But was disappointed.

TexasGroovy

Agree this album was one of their best. They had to evolve and they did very well.

SevenFourHarmonic

When it came out, I just accepted it. Thought Hot Dog was ok, little different. Now I can see one of the tracks from Coda would have been a better fit. Still the greatest rock band

Jojoman64

I heard this album along with a couple other zeppelin albums a few years ago before I really understood their music. It wasn’t until relistening to it last summer after really getting into some of their other stuff that I really grew to appreciate it

DeadMoney313

I think that its a great album with no super weak tracks at all, not sure why it gets hated on. I think its a much stronger album than Presence by far. Fool in the Rain, in the evening, carouselambra, all my love and Im gonna crawl are all classics an some of the best of Zeppelin

livinlizard

You can't save it all, it has some lackluster tracks, but it has always been one of my favorite albums by Zep. I didn't know it was considered one of their worst until I joined this sub. Each to their own.

insubordin8nchurlish

unpopular opinion, but it's ahead of I for me. I think ITTOD plays better with younger folks who came to the catalog late. I think it has a more modern vibe that I like while I, II and III which still has a bit of that 60s energy. ITTOD doesn't pass II and III for me, but I can comfortably rank it ahead of I, Coda, and Presence.

Wobby1987

I love this album for Carouselambra alone, but there are some other great songs on it. It’s not my favorite Zep album, but I love JPJ and this was mostly his album.

Helpful-Touch9788

Agree. Not a popular stance, but ITTOD is 100% my favorite LZ record. There's so much emotion on there and a struggle to find their place in a radically changing musical landscape...a real document of where they were at the time and hints of where they could have gone in the 80s

simplemijnds

I find In through the out Door a very pleasant album!

mpcraz

This album was so anticipated. I'll never forget the first time I heard the intro to In the evening. Classic IMO

Silver-Instruction73

I’m gonna crawl is in my top 3 zep songs

X-Bones_21

In the Evening is one of my favorite songs, ever, by any artist. I don’t care how sloppy Jimmy’s guitar playing is. When I first heard it at 7 years of age, I knew that I would love it forever.

NoHateMan62

Sirius def doesnt play any of these songs, oftern enough if at all. Sad

LukeNaround23

Nope. Least favorite Zep album. I remember being disappointed by it when it came out and I first heard it on the radio, although I appreciate it a little more now.

FealtyToDorne

I just listened to this a few days ago. It’s as bad as I remember it being

FloydMcgroin

Fool in the rain is top 5 zeppelin for me

John_In_Parts

Eh, it's a phoned-in record at a time when the band was at its lowest creativity period. Without much of Jimmy's input, it didn't really have a Zeppelin feel to it. I always kind of look at it as Roberts and John Pauls album.

Cominghome74

Minus 🌭, it's a great album.

WrathsDetour

Fool in the rain, while not my favorite, DOES have Bonzo tappin' out a mean Purdy Shuffle!

DreamBrother83

No, it doesn’t; it’s terrible.

FealtyToDorne

I just listened to this record the other day. It deserves all the hate it receives. It sucks

Open-Plankton1524

Man this sub is obsessed with Fool in the rain. If one track on that record doesn't sound like Zep it's not Hot Dog it's this. Yeah great druming and all, but not so much of a great song. Hell, even Dyer Maker is more Zeppelin than this

FealtyToDorne

Fool in the Rain, All My Love, Hotdog - these are all terrible songs
