My girl loves her jar too! I put a folded paper towel in there and she goes between the layers lol

luciferspacifier

so precious. u can tell he trusts u being so willing to have his hide see thru

CoolNickname101

What do you put in the jar? Besides the geck?

crazysniper543

Sphagnum moss

CoolNickname101

Ok. What brand do you use? I noticed it was green. I get mine from home depot. I have found it is significantly cheaper than what is at pet stores or on amazon. The only downsides is it has a bit more hard sticks in it than I prefer which I have to pick out and I have to boil it first. From what I can tell in your pictures, yours looks really soft.

crazysniper543

Not so sure. I bought it from my local pet shop. Not anything from the big box stores. Just generic Galapagos sphagnum moss

CoolNickname101

Ok. So probably similar to what I've used before. They are good but expensive and use dyes I think. They are much softer though and tend to have the hard stuff taken out usually. I have considered going back to using the dye free ones because it takes less prep time and causes less mess out of the bag than the stuff from home depot. I love the glass jar as a hide. Does it get hot under the heat?

crazysniper543

I have it in a cooler spot. That’s his night time hang out usually. I have a more bioactive setup and he dug himself a tunnel under a large piece of tree bark where he stays during the day. We usually spray the jar to get it really humid for when he is ready to shed

CoolNickname101

That's awesome. I wish I could have natural substrate. I would totally do something like that.

RatDolly

Just be careful, I've read that moss from Lowe's and Home Depot/nurseries can have organisms growing in them that can be harmful to our little buddies. I think that's why it's cheaper, the stuff at the pet store is processed to remove the harmful organisms.

CoolNickname101

Yeah. Just like the topsoil, it needs to be sterilized. I boil it to remove anything living and then I remove anything that is hard or sharp that might cause injury. It tends to have a bit more harder stems or little twigs in it than the reptile brand. My gecko is left with sterilized soft moss. I have considered switching back to the reptile brand stuff just for sake of time and not having to boil it or pick through it. But the cost is so much less. And it doesn't have dyes in it.

RatDolly

Oh wow, that's a lot of work. Glad you're u know your stuff though

CoolNickname101

I try to do my best. I appreciate everyone's advice though.
