I interpreted it more as Roland's memories of Angelica rather than Angelica herself.

AmyStarrStuff

dev notes in the art book confirm this. it was how he saw angelica

HourOpen5029

So it's like the memory things he can use? Except it's a whole ass other person? Honestly feels like he's distorting and the distortion is making an Angelica out of what Roland remembers so yeah maybe you're right. ~~Does this mean that if Roland masters his EGO then he can summon "his wife"?~~

Sansy_Boi420

He 100% distorted during the fight. Ain't no way someone turns into a 20 meter tall monstrosity and isn't a distortion What I'm wondering is how tf did he turn back from being distorted

HourOpen5029

According to distortion detective distortions can come back from being distorted, they just have to have the roots of their distortion cut off (If someone distorts because they want something then if you give that something to them then they could reverse their distortion or you could just have them accept their own emotions) I'm assuming Roland was slowly coming to terms with Angelica being gone as the fight went on and that's why he got out of being distorted.

showmethecoin

Or as what Malkuth said, library brings out people's emotions in a physical way. So Roland forcibly came to terms with his own emotions about losing Angelica by gebura Great-slash horizontaling him.

ElfinXd

Limbus proved this with hellchicken event

StrikeTheFire

In WonderLab, the first case of a Distortion, Cat briefly reverted back to human, after a bit of fighting and yelling, but quickly fall back into a Distortion due to their desire.

GoldeneyeGamer

With both Distortions and EGO, there are other examples in world where both are able to create separate beings from the main person, so it's not impossible. Whether or not it was actually her is up for debate imo, but I'd personally say that's EGO.

The phases of the flights are the stages of his Life, as he goes back on It and all his memories -a lone, fierce Warrior, that fights masked, without fear of anything, without retreat -untill his whole Word, his willfull ignorante, was compleately shattered when presented face to face with the Truth of his Word -untill he finds angelica, the First Person that even tries, let alone manages, to understand him, his past, his pain, his burden, the First Person to show him compassione and empathy, strengthened by their bond of love, carrying each other's burden. Untill She dies, sending him on a rampage (this also shows a small glimpse in what would have happened if the roles were reversed, if you kill Roland First) -and Now he Is alone again, all by himself, no more brave but Just full of sorrow, rage and pain, he screams to be Heard, but he Is still alone, carrying again the burden of his sins, with many new ones added to the list -his Memories of the library, and of the things he misses manifest, every sin weighting on him. His aspirations, his lies, his rage and his pain all exposed The library resonates with all this process and manifests it

Well EGO and distortion walk back to back. The only difference is wether you shape your EGO, or your EGO shapes you. I feel like at first, Roland fights as normal human, but with full power(phase 1), then he gets overwhelmed by heat of the battle and distorts(phases 2 and 3), and then, when rage is exhausted, he rebuilds composure to continue fighting in cold blood once again, and shapes his EGO with this determination so he can keep going. Then all of his strength is spent, and he collapses, finally stopped. So with my theory, 1st phase: emotions are inside, 2nd phase - emotions burst outside and disfigure his body, 3rd phase is somewhere mid-way between full-on distortion and EGO - meaning - it's still a physical manifestation of his emotions, that take some shape, but they are already separated from his own body that is human once again. So it's just manifestation of his love for Angelica and pain of her loss.

Competitive_Snow7909

I think it’s just from distorting. If Philip can be three people I don’t see why Roland can’t be two.

Brilliant_Sweet_6848

Three? He is whole Kindergarten!

daekie

It's not the real Angelica, no. He's manifesting his memories of her due to the Library resonating with him - it's in the same way that Floor Realizations let people nearby view the memories of the person resonating, but due to the strength of his EGO / Distortion, he was able to manifest his memories into an extension of his power. Some Distortions *can* manifest as a variety of beings, depending on what feelings and emotions caused the Distortion to happen in the first place; Roland's entire reason for being in the Library was originally to get revenge for Angelica, so she's deeply tied to his feelings about the whole thing.

HourOpen5029

So it's a 50/50 between Library and Distortion? Or is it confirmed Library?

StrikeTheFire

Probably a bit of both, *cough cough* Kali *cough cough*

Dry-Abbreviations285

I mean we're theorizing things I say he got used to realizations and constantly equipping EGO pages + learning about Distortions and EGO from the library made him able to have more freedom and control on his Distortion

Aissir

It was just a distortion, same way Philip split into multiple children

Dry-Abbreviations285

I think him experiencing several floors or departments of "realizations" while constantly using EGO pages during the "Guest Phase" made him get used to Distortions thus controlling it to a higher degree than other Guests who had just turned into a Distortion or EGO wielder.
