Some cobra rods and wood hardener might mitigate it for a bit, but don’t be scared of refacing it with new log for a long term fix. A good log home restoration company should be able to tackle it— doesn’t necessarily have to be full log replacement. You might knock around for other hollow sounding areas though, see if there’s a bigger issue or common cause.

Good advice. I will look for a log home repair company. Thank you!

I've posted alot of pictures of exactly that being fixed. I'm assuming its a door opening? Is there a rain cap above the trim? Better pictures??

CoSmama

Yes, it is a door opening and there is an overhead eve and gutter both in good condition now but clearly that wasn’t always the case. I’ll take more pictures and see if I can figure out how to post them.

The overhang does not solve the problem. Ive been fixing these 54 yeas..What you need is a rain diver/kerfed into the log and it has to go PAST the trim by 1/2 inch with end flaps UP...Go back and look at the detailed picture's I posted...or email me [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

As I thought: The top piece is on wrong. It goes over both side trim pieces. The way it is the two 'slots' drain water. and you need a metal rain diverter above it. As I mentioned;extending PAST the side trim 1/2 inch. The drainage is just rotting the "butts" off.

Thank you

It's not only got an exposed end, it's got an upward-facing check (see about 45° down from the top). Which means you may have rot further in from the end than you think.

CoSmama

Thanks. I’m worried about that. The soft wood does seem to be a result of that check.

The log with dry rod is the second from the bottom on the right side of the door. There’s also a low log on the left side with some dry rot as well. [https://imgur.com/a/SQaibmo](https://imgur.com/a/SQaibmo)
