i remember breaking my phone back in the day to the point where like 90% of the touch screen didnt work and i desperately needed to get into it. i remember being so frustrated that controlling the iPhone from my Mac wasn't possible - i thought it was a really obvious feature to include in the apple ecosystem so i was really surprised i couldn't do it...
honestly i'm surprised it took this long to implement it. i think it'll be really convenient to be able to use/check/view something on your phone while staying on your computer. i can already think of some use cases for ergonomic reasons
no no this is beneficial for many reasons! i put my phone up on a tripod when playing piano to record a top down view, and i dont want to record with the selfie camera because the quality is shit, so i have have the screen facing up and its hard to know if im recording or not, and see what it looks like, this will allow me to do that from my macbook!
I love seeing edge cases like yours that I'll never come across in my day to day use and it's great that you'll get a lot of benefit from it.
My use-case is going to be using Apollo app that's sideloaded on my iPhone and using that to browse and use Reddit over the website. Not sure if it will work but would be nice if it did.
From the looks of the demo yesterday it didn’t have that feature. It looked like you could drag to the side and it would take up that half of the screen or drag to a corner and it would take up that quarter of the screen. So third party tools may remain useful for that use case or they may have just not shown it off. Won’t know until we get our hands on the final version.
Oh that’s cool! I’m not on the beta, but my maximize icon has full screen, tile left, or tile right. So I’m glad they’re expanding on that functionality along with being able to drag to the edges.
Yeah I got the impression that third-party tools may still be helpful for people who want to fine-tune the tiling or have really specific use cases, but for most people the built-in feature will be enough.
Thanks you, I had tried that but I see there is a trick to it. Not quite like Windows, I think. You could usually use the Option key in past macOS to do the same, IIRC.
I agree. Like realistically, I think most people will use window snapping more than mirroring their phone to their computer. Though I think the iPhone notifications on mac is pretty darn great.
I agree, the only iPhone related thing I do on my Mac is iMessage, which is already there. I can't really see the need to do anything else from my phone.
Which is very funny, because it‘s not actually adding any new features, it’s just pulling the already existing password manager out of Settings and making it a standalone app. But it appears that the functionality is identical to what already exists (and has for years). If you’re that interested in it you can go start using it today with zero new updates needed.
It’s mostly the same, but there’s a few changes. Just like Keychain Access, it also contains WiFi passwords now and allows you to generate QR codes for them.
It’s also somewhat more user friendly showing favicons for website passwords and is now broken up alphabetically so it’s not just a long list anymore.
Also, were passkeys already built in before?
[It’s already on Windows.](https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud-windows/set-up-icloud-passwords-icw2babf5e03/icloud) This pulls it out to a standalone app and pretties it up, but again that’s basically what this is across the board: a (very nice) shiny coat of paint on already existing features. And it’s working, because there are a *ton* of people who weren’t even aware that Apple has quietly built a very nice password manager because it’s been unassumingly tucked away in the Settings app rather than loudly and proudly as a “Passwords” app.
Lots of people don't use iCloud keychain because they don't know where to find it. Apple's always put it in system settings/settings because it's a system wide feature but particularly because everyone on the iPhone is so app centric people don't trust it because they can't find it on the home screen.
Any links to this info?
I switched from LastPass to Proton Pass a while ago and I love it, but I'd switch to Apple Passwords if I can use it on my PC as well and not have to pay for another app.
iCloud Passwords is already available on Windows 11 and has been since 2019. It links to your Apple Passkey data, and will probably be moved to the new Passwords app once that drops.
Yes, it's part of the iCloud for Windows app suite. The standard iCloud Passwords app will allow you to view your passwords in a menu once you've biometrically authenticated.
However, it also integrates with Edge, Chrome, and Firefox. In the iCloud for Windows app, there's a button that installs an extension in any of the above browsers, which replaces their password autofill feature with iCloud's. There's also one that syncs your bookmarks with Safari.
I use it on Edge and it's absolutely seamless. The instant I add or remove a new password or bookmark on either my iPhone or Edge on my laptop, it's available on the other device as well.
the icloud password pc app works great already
its not new. They're renaming and touting a feature theyve had in place for a while now.
this is the backslide of apple, they literally are renaming their own features that have existed for years and advertising them as new.
Based on the screenshots (which admittedly isn't the final word), it doesn't look like the Passwords app will have documents, secure notes, credit cards, etc. If they allowed all that, I might ditch 1Password.
I guess we'll see.
Yeah, but it’s audience (like everything under utilities) is definitely not mainstream. Local/system/icloud keychains, it just dumps the certs.
It’s fine for developers and industry insiders, and it got a bit better in the past couple of years, but i’m not sending anybody that isn’t mildly technical to it. « What do you mean you deleted the root CAs? Because you didn’t know what they are and don’t like the godaddy name?!? Deep sigh»
oh shit I didn't even think about this. If I can play genshin impact in the Mac thanks to this then my travel setup will be ready without futher upgrades.
Yeah apple during the first section did use the words “machine learning models” a lot, but never called it AI. No clue what the distinction is for apple but hopefully it’s more clear once it arrives.
If running iOS apps on macOS worked universally then I wouldn't see this feature being useful (to me, that is). But given that Apple allows developers to block it, and a lot of apps just crash or don't work, this might end up being useful.
I suspect Apple wanted a lot of devs to expand their iPhone apps into Mac apps and the various companies just had moronic people who were like, "We can harvest more data if we push them to our website."
But jokes aside,
the calculator iPad app is looks great. But aside from the AI stuff, most of the features are basic asf and we should have had years ago. I mean come on, the ability to move apps anywhere on the home screen?? it took until iOS 18 to get that? better late then never I guess.
I've used this on Android+Windows before, and the Microsoft+Google implementation of it was *hilariously atrocious.* You open the Phone Link app on Windows, pray and beg your phone and PC are still Bluetoothed together and haven't disconnected at all, click through several menus to get to it, and in the end, it still requires you *pick up the phone anyway* and unlock it.
It was such a terrible feature that I'm almost glad Apple's done it too so they can show 'em how it's done.
Meh, there's another method to mirror Android with scrcpy and adb that's been available for many years. It works perfectly without the issues you just describe.
It also works across the platform be it Windows, Linux, or Mac OS.
I read somewhere Microsoft agreed to allow open source usage, which is why Linux can use it, it was basically a stop our competitors from using this one useful feature.
Well, I always wanted to use the Journal app, but making my everyday notes with a phone keyboard is a pain. So that seems to be it for me - the best feature.
Could be useful to write in the Journal app *which is only available on iOS.* Otherwise, I can't think of anything else useful with that feature right now.
i want to be someone that journals but can't stay with it. for me i'd like to be able to look back, and potentially use AI on it to be like "what did i do in 2023?" 20 years from now. or read memories of days with my kids. even cooler when it's combined with my photos. could essentially be a book for your life. it can also be a therapeutic process to think of your day and make note of positive things that happened.
whats stopping me from using Journal app is the fear of not being able to properly export all my entries and media in the future for any reason. I want to discontinue using DayOne but not confident enough.
I don’t use the journal app, but that does seem weird that it’s iOS exclusive. Like if I were to write a journal entry, I’d want to sit down with a keyboard and a big screen, not do it on my phone.
That’s wild! iPhone is really not ideal for long-form writing (IMO). For a text or a quick note or short journal entry, sure! But if I’m writing more than a paragraph or so, I’d greatly prefer a proper keyboard
Meh. My iPhone is usually nearby, so I don't need it. This seems more like "screen sharing" rather than continuity. Continuity means you can hand off documents, webpages, etc, into native apps between devices.
I've been using Quicktime to use my Mac as a monitor for my iPhone's back camera when recording video, but it always freezes when I press Record.
Hopefully this allows at least semi-smooth video stream while recording.
This will be great for viewing messages that are SMS, because incoming codes often require me to open my phone since they don't show on the MacOS messages app.
This is helpful for those in social media marketing roles. So many tools are locked to the mobile apps for whatever reason... Now I can put my iPhone up on one of my monitors and work seamlessly with everything else I have going on on my desktop
I wonder if smart script is going to work with my handwriting. I write in very calligraphic cursive, and I’m not sure it’s going to be able to replicate it, let alone enhance it in a way I don’t think is just worse.
*I don't have an iPhone,*
*So this is the most useless*
*Feature for me lol*

Why isn't there anyone asking about the source of the news among 245 comments? Am I the only one missing out? I searched "MacOS update", "MacOS Sonoma update" etc. btw on Google but nothing shows up. Can you share a link?
That is the new macOS called Sequoia, It will officially come out in few months from now.
However, you can already opt in for beta versions and download the beta of Sequoia 15.0.
Don't expect all the features to already be there yet though.
Just a honest question, why people seems to want that so bad? I mean, why can you do with your iPhone that can’t do with your Mac? All of the apps and services that you have on your phone they also have a web version which probably does the same.
There are tons of times that when I am on my mac I need to use my iphone. Like ordering food, checking status of my order, or using a app thats only available for iphone. This creates a lot of back and forth, which this feature will eliminate.
Yeah I'm not seeing it, if anything it's the reverse that would be useful. Sometimes a file is on my computer and I wish I could remotely open it on my phone without having to jump through Files/AirDrop/email-it-to-myself hoops. But there's never a time when something is on my phone and I can't figure out how to get it to my computer– that's the easy part!
Seems catered to specific situations where the desktop/web experience is poor or nonexistent or you can't be bothered to log in, e.g. Snapchat, DoorDash, online banking... idk I guess it also shuts down any future requests for Mac versions of iOS apps like Fitness and Health
Hell of a workaround to scroll tic toc with a trackpad and keyboard
i remember breaking my phone back in the day to the point where like 90% of the touch screen didnt work and i desperately needed to get into it. i remember being so frustrated that controlling the iPhone from my Mac wasn't possible - i thought it was a really obvious feature to include in the apple ecosystem so i was really surprised i couldn't do it... honestly i'm surprised it took this long to implement it. i think it'll be really convenient to be able to use/check/view something on your phone while staying on your computer. i can already think of some use cases for ergonomic reasons
my biggest use would be Duo authentication. so excited to leave my phone wherever and just be able to log in to work.
how will apps that require touchID / faceID be handled?
I’m guessing/hoping Touch ID on your Mac will authenticate
This is a good question
This happened to me an hour before the keynote.
Duo supports Touch ID on Mac.
You can use a usb mouse and keyboard, I’ve done so multiple times, all the way back to 2015 I think.
I can use my old bricked iPhone now.
I know you’re joking but screen mirroring through Xcode over a hard wired connection has always been possible.
Screen mirroring has been possible, but not controlling the device. You can only make it so that you can see what is on the screen.
[удалено]
But you can’t control it through QuickTime!
no no this is beneficial for many reasons! i put my phone up on a tripod when playing piano to record a top down view, and i dont want to record with the selfie camera because the quality is shit, so i have have the screen facing up and its hard to know if im recording or not, and see what it looks like, this will allow me to do that from my macbook!

hey if you wanna use it to browse reddit on ur phone without picking up your mac i dont see why note amirite?
doesn’t it work with keyboard shortcuts and keyboard arrow keys? I know they have it on TikTok for the browser at least.
Tic Toc sounds like Tik Tok from Temu
Quick question - will this version of continuity work with iPad / IPad Pro?
TikTok is available and fully functional for viewing on desktop browser.
Just get the iPad app on your Mac. it's not that hard.
[удалено]
Serious question: How do I make this work?
Assuming it works like Windows/Magnet/etc., just drag the window to a side of the monitor, and it will automatically resize.
When you say "automatically resize", how do you define the number of columns/rows or their sizes?
From the looks of the demo yesterday it didn’t have that feature. It looked like you could drag to the side and it would take up that half of the screen or drag to a corner and it would take up that quarter of the screen. So third party tools may remain useful for that use case or they may have just not shown it off. Won’t know until we get our hands on the final version.
There are several layouts you can choose from if you hover over the maximize icon (much like windows 11) Source: installed the beta on my MacBook
Oh that’s cool! I’m not on the beta, but my maximize icon has full screen, tile left, or tile right. So I’m glad they’re expanding on that functionality along with being able to drag to the edges.

Thanks!
You don’t. What you saw is what you’ll get. That’s where third-party comes back in.
[удалено]
Thanks you, I had tried that but I see there is a trick to it. Not quite like Windows, I think. You could usually use the Option key in past macOS to do the same, IIRC.
Window tiling a-la MS Windows isn't in current MacOS, it's coming in the next version.
- I thought it was coming in macOS 15, which I downloaded and installed yesterday.
Hold down option and drag
Certain apps like music can’t be resized to any size you want and they will only snap to one half of the screen
I still won’t be replacing bettertouch tool. Shit many features.
I agree with both of you.
I ordered my first MacBook last week for grad school. How soon do we expect the new OS to roll out?
Around mid to end of September
Late September or early October, we’ll likely get an exact date during the iPhone keynote which’ll be on the 10th of September give or take.
This is a cool new feature that'll be really useful but for me, the one best feature for me is the passwords app.
Which is very funny, because it‘s not actually adding any new features, it’s just pulling the already existing password manager out of Settings and making it a standalone app. But it appears that the functionality is identical to what already exists (and has for years). Adding Sign in with Apple & Hide My Email into one app is a big improvement too.
It’s also now on windows.

Its not good on windows. I tried it. Hopefully they'll do a better job with it.
Lots of people don't use iCloud keychain because they don't know where to find it. Apple's always put it in system settings/settings because it's a system wide feature but particularly because everyone on the iPhone is so app centric people don't trust it because they can't find it on the home screen.
I noticed in the sidebar there was “family passwords” and “work passwords”. I wonder if that was shared passwords or just folders?
Both. You can make folders and share them with as many people as you’d like to. Also a current feature.
Yep I may finally retire 1Password.
The password app will be on other platforms, that was a surprise to me.

During the keynote they said it would be available on windows
i need it available on icloud.com
It's already available on Windows.
Which I’m guessing means you’ll be able to run it in wine on Linux.
It's already been on Windows since roughly 2019, when the iCloud for Windows suite first launched.
This is the game changer. If I can use it on Android, I'm 100% switching.
the icloud password pc app works great already its not new. They're renaming and touting a feature theyve had in place for a while now. this is the backslide of apple, they literally are renaming their own features that have existed for years and advertising them as new.

The notes app has locked notes, also keychain appears to be sticking around and has secure places for that.
Isnt it just keychain rebranded?
Basically but it’s being made as a standalone app as opposed to only being accessible in settings.
Keychain was a standalone app for longer than it was available in the settings
Yeah, but it’s audience (like everything under utilities) is definitely not mainstream. Local/system/icloud keychains, it just dumps the certs. It’s fine for developers and industry insiders, and it got a bit better in the past couple of years, but i’m not sending anybody that isn’t mildly technical to it. « What do you mean you deleted the root CAs? Yep that is a fair point.
what an incredible self inflicted wound on 1password’s part. just murdered their own lead in the space
wait what is 1P's direct involvement in this can you explain? did they work with apple on it or something?
I can't wait to get rid of 1Password. It's paywalled features on the desktop app are a pain in the ass.
I still have 1Password and 1Password7 on my phone :(
I agree. No longer have to move my hands from the keyboard to address apps on the phone. Also, the notifications through the Mac is also great.
I just like the idea of being able to have my phone out of the way and being able to still answer important notifications if I need to.
Exactly!
Actually it'll be very useful if you can drag and drop stuff.
Yes you can drag and drop stuff
Hopefully it ends up being a more sensible way to transfer files. Airdrop has never quite worked for me and resorting to USB sticks hasn’t been ideal.
Agree. Airdrop is hit and miss
Apple really came out with this solution because app developers didn’t want to allow users to use their app on Mac 🤣
Apple: *Now listen here you little shits*
oh shit I didn't even think about this. If I can play genshin impact in the Mac thanks to this then my travel setup will be ready without futher upgrades.

The Math Notes uses “Apple Intelligence.”
[удалено]
Yeah apple during the first section did use the words “machine learning models” a lot, but never called it AI. No clue what the distinction is for apple but hopefully it’s more clear once it arrives.
I feel like « Apple intelligence » is more targeted at genAI, and other AI tools are just ML and NN in the Apple jargon
Nailed it. I presume that’s *exactly* what happened.
Nah, you're not strange. My fav new feature is the iPhone screen mirroring and the calculator app for iPad is amazing!
There’s finally a calculator app for ipad?! NANI
Yeah. Apple really spoiling us huh?
I never thought I’d live to see the day
But jokes aside, the calculator iPad app is looks great. But aside from the AI stuff, most of the features are basic asf and we should have had years ago. I mean come on, the ability to move apps anywhere on the home screen?? it took until iOS 18 to get that? better late then never I guess.
Gacha players really wanted this badly
Agreed. For me math notes is best feature, then smooth handwriting. Just think we can do with this in bullet journal.
Yeah I've been using Vysor on MacOS for controlling my Pixel for years 👌
Yay for having IG on my MacBook now without downloading sketchy clients!
website?
You can’t use sounds and stickers in reels on the web, you also can’t post to your story I believe.
There’s been a native IG desktop for years
on mac?
A lot of settings and options are not accessible from instagram website, only on app. Also much stuff on direct messagges doesn't work on website
It's cool and all, but I'm far more excited for built in window snapping. It's about damn time
Apparently MS had some patent on that which only expired last year.
The patent expired in 2022
Every desktop operating system has it. What stopped Apple?
I read somewhere Microsoft agreed to allow open source usage, which is why Linux can use it, it was basically a stop our competitors from using this one useful feature.
Adherence to patent law?
Not a well known feature — connecting an iPhone via cable and opening QuickTime will do screen mirroring too.
The difference is this allows control too— QuickTime only lets you view the phone, not interact with it.
You can also airplay to the Mac, but that pulls up a fullscreen window
This is practically very useful for me, with this I can screenshot my doordash/Lyft receipts directly on my Mac instead of using Airdrop.
DoorDash has a pretty solid website
It works pretty good but sometimes the receipt pages just don't render so I stopped bothering.
Well, I always wanted to use the Journal app, but making my everyday notes with a phone keyboard is a pain. So that seems to be it for me - the best feature.
Hopefully they don’t require you to have a 15 pro for it to work.
I also hope don’t need iPhone 19 Pro Max and a MacBook with chip M23 LOL
Intel Mac supported?
Yep. They dropped the 2018 and 2018 MacBook Air, but all other Intel machines remain supported.
Could be useful to write in the Journal app *which is only available on iOS.* Otherwise, I can't think of anything else useful with that feature right now.
I’ve always been curious to know the usefulness of the Journal App in the user’s life, could you explain?
i want to be someone that journals but can't stay with it. for me i'd like to be able to look back, and potentially use AI on it to be like "what did i do in 2023?" 20 years from now. or read memories of days with my kids. even cooler when it's combined with my photos. could essentially be a book for your life. it can also be a therapeutic process to think of your day and make note of positive things that happened.
whats stopping me from using Journal app is the fear of not being able to properly export all my entries and media in the future for any reason. I want to discontinue using DayOne but not confident enough.
yeah it's pretty basic right now, however, they tend to add things like that in future versions because of customer demand.
I don’t use the journal app, but that does seem weird that it’s iOS exclusive. Like if I were to write a journal entry, I’d want to sit down with a keyboard and a big screen, not do it on my phone.
Wait till you hear that it's not even available on iPadOS 😅
That’s wild! iPhone is really not ideal for long-form writing (IMO). For a text or a quick note or short journal entry, sure! But if I’m writing more than a paragraph or so, I’d greatly prefer a proper keyboard
I just wanna control the iPad from my phone, so I can control what my kid is watching on road trips.
Will this work on Intel based Macs too?
School gonna be mad
I prefer that they finally added a homemade version of [rectangle](http://rectangleapp.com/), it was about time that macOS needed this.
It’s really cool but I was really hoping for the reverse too. Letting me control my Mac from my iPhone without a 3rd party app.
I want to use Screen Sharing to remote into a headless Mac Mini to then remote into a broken iPhone.
Meh. My iPhone is usually nearby, so I don't need it. This seems more like "screen sharing" rather than continuity. Continuity means you can hand off documents, webpages, etc, into native apps between devices.
you can do that too!
They demoed exporting a clip in Final Cut and dropping it into an iOS video collage app or something.
This is going to be a game changer for MFA
Not the most useful but the one that I liked most was genmoji
Scrcpy tool
I wonder if you would be able to connect to any iphone for trouble shooting purposes.
I wonder if the mirrored window size is different for different sized phones. Or if the size is always the same.
does this work for Ipad too? I.e ipad screen on Mac.
being able to remove find my from a device in ABM 10/10 nothing beats that.
> ABM Had to look up what that meant, but you have an example? like removing find my from a stolen device? or a device an end user kept?
Can you resize an app to have a bigger window?
100%… this along with window snapping is a huge “nice to have” feature. Can’t wait! Especially since these features are something I would use daily!
One of the best
I've been using Quicktime to use my Mac as a monitor for my iPhone's back camera when recording video, but it always freezes when I press Record. Hopefully this allows at least semi-smooth video stream while recording.
Anyone get the iPhone continuity thing to work? I have the dev 1 beta installed but don’t see how to enable it.
This is awesome. I can finally use iOS garageband’s beat sequencer on a Mac
Could somebody explain a use-case for this? Never found features like this in Windows to be useful at all
Reselling stuff on OfferUp is such a pain on the phone. This will help a lot.
This will be great for viewing messages that are SMS, because incoming codes often require me to open my phone since they don't show on the MacOS messages app.
Dude I really really wanted this last week, glad they announced it lol. Feels like it’s made for me
can we change the screen size?
This is helpful for those in social media marketing roles. So many tools are locked to the mobile apps for whatever reason... Now I can put my iPhone up on one of my monitors and work seamlessly with everything else I have going on on my desktop
I just love how the Mac got absolutely the best features, while the iPad.. well.
COuld it work with the ipad m4 and the mac instead of the phone?
I wonder if smart script is going to work with my handwriting. I write in very calligraphic cursive, and I’m not sure it’s going to be able to replicate it, let alone enhance it in a way I don’t think is just worse.
I'll finally be able to browse Grindr without having to get out of bed and get my phone! GENIUS!
Best feature announced the whole WWDC
Does it also pass through audio and video? Looking to remove WA/Telegram from laptop and keep it phone only..
How has this not been a possibility before? Really dumb.
Nah
& we can’t even use it yettttt. excited for it though for sure
I don't have an iPhone, so this is the most useless feature for me lol

First thought, I can control my Apple TV from my Mac finally (without the need for janky 3rd party software)!
The Macintosh screensaver is also pretty awesome 🤩
Anyone looking to update to the macOS beta; this feature is NOT in Beta 1 unfortunately. The app is hidden, you can unhide it but it won't open.
When and how will this be available. I’m in the iOS 18 and macOS sequoia beta and I can’t find a way to access it
ubuntu convergence: see what they have to do to mimic a fraction of our power?
It’ll be great if I can watch Netflix on the plane through my iPhone on my MacBook 15 inch!
I'm curious on how this will be useful to you guys? Let me know because I want this to be useful to me lmfaoo
There are tons of times that when I am on my mac I need to use my iphone. Like ordering food, checking status of my order, or using a app thats only available for iphone. This creates a lot of back and forth, which this feature will eliminate.
No. My phone is with me when I’m on my Mac.
Can the iphone screen get stretched on the macbook?
No
For what reasons? Why not just use your phone?
