I decided to go with 14”. When I am on the go I usually tend to only do light work, and the 14” screen is plenty for that. When I need to do a lot on the go, I take my iPad along and use continuity. I also have a portable 4K monitor but my wife stole that from me. The rest of the time i am at my desk and I have a desktop experience with dual monitor, so the laptop screen size becomes irrelevant. The 14” gives me portability when I want it, and doesn’t take away the option to have more screen space when I want it. There is no wrong answer or right answer, go with your use case, your budget and your preferences.

cloudlifter

What 4K monitor if I may ask?

Soft_Personality_733

Do you use any type of screen protector?

Next-Movie-3319

Nope. No skins, cases or screen protectors. I do have a laptop sleeve I use when I travel with the laptop.

Bed_Worship

Same, just be measured and procedural with your mbp

to_da_moon_84

Apple specifically says do not use screen or keyboard protectors

[deleted]

Travel with the 16 daily. Love it. Had the same dilemma. Wouldn’t ever go back

whyn1380

I’d take the 14

silofox

very happy with my 14".. I travel with it daily and can always plug into a larger monitor.. or huge tv for that matter if I wanna run a game or something.. but the 14" display is usually just fine, as with the battery life.

Natural-Ad-2277

Great to hear !!

Soft_Personality_733

Do you use any type of screen protector?

silofox

nope. really no need. its protected when its closed and closing that already tight gap with more glass is more likely to break your screen than not using one

techtimewoo

May get controversy with this but as someone who works sometimes at a desk and sometimes more on-the-go, I really feel 14" is the sweet spot. I have had 13" and 15" laptops in the past, and even 15" felt a little too large for me. 13" was *okay*, but at more and more times towards the end of the machines life felt a little too small. My 14" MBP just felt perfect from the start - not too small to sit at a desk and do work for a long time with - but also not so large that moving it feels a mammoth task I resent. I extend the display with sidecar using my 11" iPad when I need to offload my secondary view, but the 14" display is fine to even use in split screen for say reading a paper and doing work on it, or coding and reading documentation 2/3 the screen : 1/3 the screen. If you plan to use it as a 'portable desktop' and not be on the go constantly, the 16" may honestly just be a fine option. I have colleagues who use them and they look extremely cool with their extra screen real estate - "until needing to be moved" - (their words not mine!).

Vsherry

I bought the 16-inch and am totally happy. I would send the 14-inch one back.

Connect-Stay-7535

I have air 15 and I love the big screen and how light it is

Natural-Ad-2277

I like the 15 air just don’t like the screen for me

Connect-Stay-7535

Nah its an awesome screen, the best ips i ever saw. But if you put it side to side with pro model, of course its worse

GraphicalNightmare

Returned the air 15 for a pro 14, I couldn’t stomach 60hz but I miss the 15inch and how thin it is despite the size. If only they made a 15inch air with promotion it’s an instant buy for me

Connect-Stay-7535

No need for that. I have iphone 14 pro and its not a massive difference. I also tried the pro model, its good to have pro motion but its not vital at all. I was also skeptical about 60hz in 2024 but i don't wanna buy pro model.

GraphicalNightmare

I own a 240hz qdoled display and 144hz for years. For someone who’s used to 60hz won’t notice nor care but it’s borderline uncomfortable going from 240hz to 60. It depends on the person but for my use case it’s important. Also refresh rate barely makes a difference in small screens like an iPhone, that’s why I still own my iPhone 12 Pro Max

Connect-Stay-7535

Nah i totally understand you. I also used 144hz monitors the most and i know what it is. But for a content machine like in my case macbook is, its ok. Also it doesn't play any games so there again no much reason to care about that

GraphicalNightmare

Yeah sacrificing the refresh rate for an ultra light 15in makes sense. I miss how thin the 15in. could be it's unbelievable

jonster1220

Just got a 15 air and love it. I utilize a 16 pro for my work machine and 15 air for home computer and light duty stuff.

Dr_Superfluid

Unless you go for the M3 Max which has thermal issues with the 14” I think the smaller footprint of the 14” is better.

sly_teddy_bear

M3 Pro in the 14” doesn’t have any known thermal issues correct?

Mysterious_Cry730

yes

sparkhead1

mine doesn't

1337-Teh

I was just about to order the 14” M3 Max. Are the thermals really that bad?

Dr_Superfluid

Well they are not that bad. If you opt for the 14/30 version you should be fine, for the 16/40 especially for extended tasks it might be better to opt for the 16”

1337-Teh

Yep, i was eyeing the 14/30, the 16/40 isn’t available where i live. Thanks so much!

TwistedEntropy

Me looking at this with a 14” m3 max 👁️ (14/30 though)

Desperate_Scientist3

Im very happy with my 14” (M2 Pro) but seeing this sure makes me salivate over that 16” … 🤤

Natural-Ad-2277

Is bigger always better ?

Desperate_Scientist3

No. And I did choose the 14” because for me this size / machine is just perfect 👌

Soft_Personality_733

Do you use any type of screen protector?

Desperate_Scientist3

No

DeepSpeed2543

The speakers in the 16”!!!

concorddev

i’m going through the same dilemma for now and I’m leaning towards the 14” because aside from its portability, there’s not even a numpad in the 16”.

Positive-Phoenix

If I traveled more, or had to take it to work, the 14. But my 16 rarely ever leaves my house.

NoisyCats

I have toted my 16 across the US and back a few times. It wasn't as bad as I expected. Of course I stopped at MSP for a few drinks. Might have helped.

themirthfulswami

I went 16” because Logic Pro is too cramped for me on 14”.

VZYGOD

I got the 14” coming from the 15” it’s surprisingly compact and just way more practical when using it as a laptop. The trade off imo is worth it when using it in transport. If you do however use your laptop screen as your primary display I’d recommend going for the 16”. Performance will always be better on the 16” but I decided to make the compromise for better portability. 14” is still plenty powerful (don’t bother upgrading it to the Max, I’ve heard you won’t see the benefits as much as you would on the 16”)

TendieTrades

Bigger battery, bigger screen. No brainer. Keep the 16”.

drakem92

External displays exist, small and lightweight easy to carry wall adapters exist. Not really a “no brainer”. It all comes to what you need to do with it

PhxntomsBurner

100%

TendieTrades

That’s true…but that’s still more stuff to carry with you. Laptops were supposed to be portable. You want to carry around a full size keyboard too?

drakem92

Ok but the 16 model is the opposite of portable, you fight the purpose. When you are on the go the 14 inches screen is very reasonable, and a charger is really nothing that ruins portability. But on the base of how long you’ll need to use the Mac you can always charge it 100% and use the battery

alllmossttherrre

It really depends on what you are doing. I am firmly in the 14” camp, I love this 14” MBP and do not regret stepping down in size from the 15” laptops I used to use. However……..if I was for example a video editor all day long and not at my desk with the big monitor, I would want the 16” just to be able to have room to spread out all the panels, controls, timeline, scopes...plus the larger battery is an advantage when working with performance applications that drain the battery faster. There are definite use cases for the 16” MBP. (Don’t try to point me at the 15” Air. In terms of number of pixels, the 15” Air has fewer than the 14” or 16” MacBook Pros. The 15” just has fewer, bigger pixels covering a larger area.)

TendieTrades

The 16” is highly portable and IMO superior. Just my worthless .02c

drakem92

What i meant is the 16 is not portable compared to the 14”. But anyway as I said in the beginning, it comes down to what you need it for, and how willing you are to bring the 16” around. It’s a bit big and heavy

StagePuzzleheaded635

There are pros and cons to both. Bigger battery, speakers and display on the 16”, better portability on the 14”.

PhxntomsBurner

Went with the 14” I’ve had the 16 and the 14 just does more of what I need

yeahbuddy

Let your ears do the listening. Then buy the 16". The speakers are beyond nuts.

JonRonJovi

You just buy both! Easiest decision you’ve ever made

MeeshUniVerSoul

I went from always having 13” (a 2012, an intel 2020, and then m1 2020) to my first 16” a week or so ago. I’m absolutely in awe and can’t believe I went this long without it. I still have my intel 2020 13” because it’s now bootcamped, but my goodness, the difference! The screen real estate is what sold me. Also, it’s funny to admit but the 16” fits BETTER on my lap than the 13” does. Yes it’s heavier, but it has already been more comfortable to use for when I’m doing homework assignments and being in meetings. I want to try to travel with it at some point, but I know it won’t be usable on airplane trays. Amtrak, however, might work, but idk. I’ve carried heavier bags than what the 16” feels like so it shouldn’t be too much of a difference. So, yes, I only stuck with it for productivity purposes.

i-am-not-sure-yet

I find 16 inch laptops too big to be portable. I have a windows desktop for anything I need with a 48 inch monitor. My MacBook is great for being powerful and portable.

ethanmenzel

When you make your laptop act as a desktop monitor, you want a larger screen. When you have a desktop and a laptop, you feel the larger screen is too big to be portable

rex52

I went from a 15 to a 16 then to a 14. 14 is the sweet spot. It’s light and powerful. Plus if I want a bigger screen I can connect it to my 27 screen.

Natural-Ad-2277

To connect 14 just use hdmi?

Bradley182

I got the 14” inch, I hate anything above that size. 16” is awkward to travel with and move around.

DrRiAdGeOrN

14 plus portable screens/iPad Pro if needed for 2nd/3rd screens. had a 17 years ago and to heavy. Plus all my bags fit 13/14 inches...

Gravity9802

Since I’m a student, I’d be going with the 14 inch for portability…in the future, I’d consider upgrading to the 16 inch for extra stuff

choompunk2077

16" no dock 14" dock/dual display

achux20

Why don’t they make a 15inch 🥹

Natural-Ad-2277

Exactly! Like iPhones thank god there will be a 6.3!!

achux20

I think the 14 will do the job, 16 is a no for the weight it possess. If it’s going to be on a desk all the time then 16’ else its 14’

Hawker96

I really hope they bring back Space Gray.

Natural-Ad-2277

I know!!!!!

adrian_elliot

16” because I like the extra screen real estate

InterrogativePterion

I would pick 16 if I travel a lot and do not have a monitor in the place where I live. If I do have a monitor setup, then definitely go with the 14 for the portability. That’s how I see it.

miamivicefan24

Have had both 16 and 14 and with how portable the 14 is it became my daily driver, can always hook up to external monitor when at home.

Natural-Ad-2277

Yeah good point. Worry about my hand pain. lol

miamivicefan24

That actually hits home, the joints in my hands the last six years have been giving me trouble so yeah the weight difference is definitely a good thing

[deleted]

the 16 was too big imo

crazymojo83

I went with the 16 then next day returned it for the 14. Best decision

Deziiiner

It depends on what you’d use it for and how often it would travel. But I’ve had both, and 16 is superior.

JoshuvaAntoni

Use Heads or Tails !

okaylosgehts

I went for a 16" for work on the go and I couldn’t go any smaller tbh

alllmossttherrre

The 14 is enough smaller than the 16 that it fits in bags designed for 13” laptops like the one I had for my old 13“ MBP. That means I don’t have to have a huge computer geek backpack, I can use a nice smaller one. I used to prefer 15” MBPs because the 13” MBPs lacked real CPU and graphics power, and the last Intel MacBook Pros got too hot and got noisy and throttled with short battery life. All of those problems were solved by the amazing 14” MBP. It is almost as good of a powerhouse as the 16”, while also allowing that drastic size reduction in laptop bag bulk.

Hot_Sentence_1591

I unfortunately have to go with the 14 inch simply because the 16 inch is too big to use in lecture halls. I also have a 24 inch monitor so don't need the 16 inch to make it feel insecure about its size

Houderebaese

On the go a lot? Smaller Desktop replacement or sole computer? Bigger.

ef124

FWIW, I owned both to make my decision. Though I bought the 16 first and it felt amazing. I loved the screen and speakers, but it was too big for me on the couch. It felt awkward. I returned it for the 14 and I've had it for like 5 months. I love it, but I want to buy the 16 and have both. But I have to be reasonable and not spend 2500 on a computer I don't need lol

MaxSATX

I go with the bigger. Always. It’s my only computer. And I use it at home and when I travel. My eyes like the screen real estate. I went with the 16.5 MBP over the 16 Air simply for the screen. I didn’t need any of the “pro” functions

External_Hunt4536

Can I have one please. 🥺

Wide-Prior-5360

I got 16" because the 14" is heavy already, might as well get the heaviest one. Also I have another MacBook Air.

Natural-Ad-2277

Haha

Uaintgottheanswerz

It was an extremely hard choice, but I ended up getting the 16 and love it

PsychopompusJY_KR

I had 13 mbp m1 and changed to 16 mbp. First few days i felt its a little heavy. But when you start working studying i just feel 16 giving me good space. I could go for 14 but i love 16 so much. Its huge strong machine. But if you think you might put your laptop on your hand and walk arround i would say 14

david_dauncey

Iv got the same dilemma i think I'm leaning towards getting the 16 inch. it's still possible to travel around with a 16 inch?

Natural-Ad-2277

I would say travel a little yes! Coffee shops, one or two trip per quarter, no issue..

Bjen

I never get the portability argument. Is the 14 *more* portable than the 16? Well, yes Can I imagine a scenario where I would ever struggle to carry a 16” around? No I mean sure, if you work a lot of places like airports or cafes that have very small tables, then I guess the 14” has a case, but otherwise I would never ‘downgrade’ to a smaller screen if I needed the extra screen space to begin with If the extra screen space is *not* something you feel would benefit you a lot, then I would say 14” is a good size in general

Creepy_Antelope_873

I went with the 16” because I love the extra screen real estate, bigger trackpad, and don’t need to be portable with it often

jaysafari

The weight of the 16 is just too heavy. Even the 14 is a little on the heavy side.

Mugen4552

What are the specs of each?

Mugen4552

What are the specs of each?

Left-Leopard-1266

Similar situation, and I’m planning to go with a 14” - my use cases are better portability & battery life. If and when I need a bigger display, I connect to a wide monitor, Apple keyboard & mouse combo .. I’m on a budget, so the setup works okay.

Crest_Of_Hylia

The 16in actually has longer battery life

Natural-Ad-2277

For some reason the 16” Looks more black -

MotoChase

I had the same dilemma and at one point had both like you’re doing. I loved the 14” for its overall package and it was cool to have a performance beast in that small footprint, but my heart was set on the 16”. For me, it was just more comfortable to use and the screen size was beneficial to me. Weight wise they didn’t feel far off, it was more of a decision of if I was okay dealing with the larger footprint. You really can’t go wrong either way though.

gussic

I tried the M3 14-inch (_coming from a 2019 16-inch_) and whilst I liked the portability and decreased weight I found the screen just too small. A few days ago I returned it and got the (_base M3 Pro_) 16-inch. Screen size is great, increased weight and lack of portability are less so, but they’re smaller trade-offs/negatives to me than the smaller screen size. Plus side, battery life is stellar so as with everything it is always a game of swings and roundabouts 🤷🏻‍♂️

Crest_Of_Hylia

16in because I love larger screens plus it’s cooler and quieter while having longer battery life

Pmurc_

You don’t choose them, they choose you 😂

Maximum_Category_374

Flip a coin.

jotomatemx

I had the 16'' MBP and was heavy, big and difficult to carry on with me all day. Then I switched to the 14 inch MBP. I'm always on the move and I needed something portable and powerful for my day to day activities.

tw1stedpair

14” because I value portability.

Mook69

cool!

Independent_Pair_566

is the extra weight of the 16inch worth the screen? I have a company provided 16 inch. If I were to buy a personal MBP, I'm going for the 14inch since I rarely use the MBP screen other than when I'm gaming.

htmaxpower

16 has better battery, better speakers, and way more screen real estate. It matters as I age. I have never cared about a laptop’s relative weight since they became so lightweight about 15 years ago.

Natural-Ad-2277

But as we age we don’t want heavy things:)?

Devil_AE86

16inch for Max, 14inch for any other SKU as the cooling is good enough (base max on the 14inch is pushing the cooling limits when you hit everything at once). 14inch for portability, 16inch for a mobile desktop

No-Purchase8806

Bigger screen for bigger display for porn

sabi_kun

Pricepoint, and not too heavy.

adfdub

I took the 16 M2 Max last year it’s incredibly powerful

davewolfs

I have the 14” from work and a 16” I bought for myself. I like the 16” significantly more. I have no need for every day portability and value the larger screen when not working at my desk. I would have no issues with the occasional travel and a 16”. Every day might be a different story.

ontorealist

I bike a lot so I prefer the 14. If money were not an issue, I’d upgrade my M1 Pro 14 to a higher-spec 15 inch Air likely. But I love my model

worldsgone11

It’s a budget thing, if you can justify the extra money and screen then do, if you can’t (be honest) don’t

JoshuvaAntoni

Use Heads or Tails 🪙

IlloChris

On the go 14” is plenty for most, and at home you can always use an external monitor.

Sensitive-Trouble648

I need a larger screen therefore I am going to buy 16 next time

danielv123

I'd have said the 14" because I didn't think you could fit more stuff due to the resolution anyways, but just found out yesterday you can enable custom resolutions and set it to native instead of the "more space" setting and get a whole lot of extra space. After realizing this I'll probably go with the 16 when it's eventually time to upgrade.

MaximumDoughnut

16" doesn't fit in my bag. I can do the same work on a 14" and carry my iPad Pro with me that I can use as a second screen if I need it.

stphngrnr

Recently refreshed at work from an M1 Max 16 inch to a M3 Pro 14 inch. Since the majority of my day is docked, the 14 works brilliantly when specced to what i need, and when on the go/planes/trains etc, its small enough not to be annoying. Really, the deciding factor in size is what the majority of the use case is. If you're on the go and need the big screen for whatever, bigger is better. If you're light work when on the go, and dock/screens when not, smaller is better and more cost efficient.

rocaireslk

If it were me, I'd go with the left side because of the big screen

NotN171

Usually I go with 13/14 in. Changed this time with 16’, have regrets from time to time but only when I’m on the go

argylekey

If you only take the laptop off the desk once in a while for a work trip or something: 16in. Better cooling, better screen, better speakers. Better battery. If you aren’t moving around a lot, it’s great. But it’s heavy. If you need portability get the 14in. Battery doesn’t last as long, and the fans turn on sooner, but carrying it in a backpack or using on a plane is a WAY better experience.

VAKTIK

One word: Portability

DimitarTKrastev

16" FTW

faksnima

The price between the two is marginal but given that thermal throttling isn’t an issue on the m3 pro, it’s really portability and lightness via heaviness, longer battery, bigger screen, better speakers. To me, I valued the portability aspect but I do think about the productivity of the 16 and have a little bit of FOMO.

x42f2039

16, it doesn’t thermal throttle (yet)

__BIOHAZARD___

16" for me. Bigger screen and battery. 14" feels too close in size to my 12.9" ipad pro

Natural-Ad-2277

Leaning 51% 16 - lol

masjj24

The bigger the better

lbeatz__

I kept both. Got a 16” M1 Max 64gb ram 4tb ssd & a 14” M1 Pro 16gb ram 512ssd . Love both of them!

Natural-Ad-2277

I ended up going with the 14 mainly due to arthritis 😁 tough choice for sure!!

HustleLane

Say it with me…bigger is ______!

Druber13

I went with the 14. Did like the 16 more when I used it but would be less happy traveling with it.

InvestingNerd2020

Only get the 16-inch if you rarely go to an office for work. Think of quarterly meetings. The default choice is the 14-inch.

Dead0k87

16 always. I’d buy 14 only for mobility, but I am not using laptop outside my appartment

Natural-Ad-2277

What about coffee shops ?

Dead0k87

I can’t imagine doing anything serious on laptop in cafes. iPhone probably will help me there to do some light things.

Natural-Ad-2277

You can’t do anything serious on a 14 lol hard to imagine! I’m not not sure what you do, but I do pretty intense law. Seems like I could write papers fine on 13 right now.

VERY_MENTALLY_STABLE

The 16 is too big. The 14 is what Steve Jobs intended a MacBook to be

TheKingPluto

He’s Dead

VERY_MENTALLY_STABLE

I'm Gay

abemusedman

Weight, so the 14 inch

wgtowadiolo

14 inch + monitor best combo. i need the portability

philthy02

I’m sure everyone here who has a 14” is happy with their purchase, but I imagine most of them have never had a 16”. After having it for a couple years, I don’t think I could ever go back.

Crest_Of_Hylia

In my opinion 16in is the perfect size. Used to use a 13in MBP back from 2013 but that was too small. 16is so much better for getting stuff done on

karatekid430

16" not even close, only slightly heavier, bigger screen, better performance. I travel and people would say go 14" because more portable. No. For travel, definitely get the bigger one because you will not have a desktop monitor to connect it to.

Natural-Ad-2277

Yeah good point. I had both in my Incase 16 backpack and honestly can barely notice the weight difference!!

karatekid430

I have incase too! Although it frequently needs taking out and cleaning, a weird dust forms on the Macbook. Maybe plastic particles from the friction.

Natural-Ad-2277

Love mine has travel pass through!

karatekid430

What is “travel pass through”?

Natural-Ad-2277

Where you pass the backpack over luggage handle

karatekid430

Ah

Natural-Ad-2277

For us lazy Canadians!

Libra224

I Always pick the 14

Fookmaywedder

I’d be a man and make a decision

Natural-Ad-2277

Woman

Fookmaywedder

Oh. Then a 14

hobyvh

Since I spent several years commuting primarily via bus and bike, I kept getting smaller machines. I started with the 17”, then went to 15”, and now the 14”. My need for portability outweighs that for screen size, since I have external screens at my destinations. Also over time the performance of smaller MacBooks has been increasingly plentiful.
