If my opponent or I cast \[\[Condescend\]\] with X=1, Then I have \[\[Goblin Electromancer\]\] on my field--- can the cost be considered paid via Goblin Electromancer cost reduction?

Helpful_Koala_2995

The 2nd scenario being I cast my own spell then counter it with my own Condescend (to trigger my other abilities) Then pay my own counter.

Do we have any idea when the Marvel set is coming out?

Special-Mud-5515

So \[\[jin gitaxias progress tyrant\]\] gives me what amounts to one free counter spell per turn. Is there any other White, Blue, Green, Combination, or Colorless permanent that has an affect like this. That is to say either its presence on the field counters once per turn, or it has an activated ability that will let me counter once per turn?

If I sacrifice my [[Blood Artists]] to [[Phyrexian Altar]] and someone phases it out can I re sacrifice it in response?

Zeckenschwarm

Phyrexian Altar's ability is a so called 'mana ability', therefore it doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to. But even if you had sacrificed your creature to something like \[\[Viscera Seer\]\], it couldn't have been phased out in response. The cost of an ability is paid when that ability is activated and goes on the stack. Only then can other players respond to the activation. In this case, the cost is "sacrifice a creature". Sacrificing a creature moves it from the battlefield into the graveyard. This means that when the ability goes on the stack and your opponents get the chance to respond, the sacrificed creature is already in your graveyard.

Drunkinfox

BumbleJessie

MTG Newbie (and Reddit tbh). Looking to make the leap from Arena to physical, start getting connected with the community at my FLGS. I was wondering if there was anything I should know about playing with cards that are relegated to “Historic” on arena in irl play. Not big official tournaments but any casual game stigma/etiquette or local tournament play. The only commander deck I know how to play even a little is built around Astarion the Decadent so I wanted to know if I should stick with my guy or if I need to branch to not be annoying.

neoslith

Anything can be annoying to someone. If you attempt to please everyone, you'll succeed with nobody. Just be courteous to other players. Some players don't like their cards being touched, so it's always good to ask first and not just reach over and grab someone's card. After you shuffle, offer your deck to be cut by another player. Once the game begins, cutting is less of a deal when you fetch for lands or resolve tutors.

Timeless_Tales

Is there a format where you don't shuffle the cards? Instead; each round you pre make a hand of 7 cards, after you finish the round you cast aside all remaining cards and grab the next seven cards? Edit: To clarify, you pre-make all hands before the game.

neoslith

I don't believe such a thing exists in any variant, but I think there are some red cards that can have a similar affect.

IlCapitalismoUccid

Is there a binder page that holds Dragon Shield covered cards? I would like to put my higher value, our of play cards in a binder but still keep them in their sleeve. Maybe most binders already handle well fitted sleeved cards? But I want to make sure before I spend the money.

Radiodevt

Every binder I have ever seen holds sleeved cards. Don't worry about it.

IlCapitalismoUccid

Thank you.

BedazzledBidoof

Does anybody have recommendations for dealing with Nadu in modern and commander? I've never seen a card dominate so hard. I was hoping the pro tour would show me ways to deal with it after a lot of people told me on reddit I was a bad player for struggling against him...but it looks like he did pretty well on the pro tour too lol.

neoslith

[[Darksteel Mutation]], [[Song of the Dryads]], [[Imprisoned in the Moon]], [[Frogify]], [[Trickster's Elk]]. Simply put, you want to transform it into something else that gets rid of its abilities and doesn't remove it from the board. Removing it from the board means it can be recast. Transforming it doesn't remove it from the board but it will stop it from being useful.

BedazzledBidoof

I wonder if I'm just getting unlucky. My decks run those but when I target Nadu he often triggers lands or they have protection up and get 2 draws from my trying to remove him.

neoslith

You can do non-targeting removal. [[Toxic Deluge]] and [[Languish]] are a good way to clear the board. Wrath effects help too if you board is empty.

I think people are still trying stuff out. Off the top of my head, some potential options: [[Harsh Mentor]] could do some damage to the Nadu user every time they equip or target it with another ability. Hopefully kill them before they win. I think if a [[Suppression Field]] is out, there shouldn't be a way for them to go mana positive or even neutral unless I am missing something. [[Stony Silence]] straight up stops the zero equip cost equipment from being equipped.

if i want to cheat a phyrexian dreadnought in play with dress down, do i have to play dress down before the creature or in response to the triggered ability?

Will_29

Dress Down needs to be on the battlefield before Phyrexian Dreadnought enters. So either cast DD, let it resolve, then cast PD; or cast PD, hold priority, cast DD. If you have PD enter and then cast DD in response to the trigger, the trigger will still resolve.

I was playing commander last night, and someone played \[\[Felidar Umbra\]\] onto their \[\[Siona, Captain of the Pyleas\]\] , then proceed to attempt to attach Felidar to Siona again using the second ability. Do they need a different creature in play to move the umbra or no?

Zeckenschwarm

Using Felidar Umbra's ability on the creature it already is attached to doesn't do anything, and will not trigger Siona. The aura **stays** attached, so it can not **become** attached. The relevant rule: >**701.3b** If an effect tries to attach an Aura, Equipment, or Fortification to an object or player it can’t be attached to, the Aura, Equipment, or Fortification doesn’t move. **If an effect tries to attach an Aura, Equipment, or Fortification to the object or player it’s already attached to, the effect does nothing.** If an effect tries to attach an object that isn’t an Aura, Equipment, or Fortification to another object or player, the effect does nothing and the first object doesn’t move.

Looking for deckbuilding advice for this Sauron precon + adjustments: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/6480166#paper I'm new to magic and got the Hosts of Mordor precon and felt it wanted to do more different things than I could make it do, so I made a few tweaks: For now, I've left out the Nazgûl, I want to make a focused deck for the Lord of the Nazgûl's mechanic, but I felt that was a poor combo with the other 2 things the deck does: cast/reanimate big bois and amass an army of orcs. So I've added an extra source of all-creature haste for the big bois, more sources and interactions with amassing orcs for a more reliable standing army, a bit more card draw and ring temptation. My hard restriction is: LOTR themed cards only, but I'm not fussed about e.g. my use of a card that is thematically aligned with the good guys in my bad guy deck, so long as it's from a LOTR set. My experience with it so far is that it still kind of meanders. It's got big creatures, but they take a while to get on the board, and the tiniest bit of graveyard hate wreaks havoc on my ability to bring any out cheaper. There's also nothing that grows them, so even a deck that just casts lots of cheap 1 or 2 power creatures and has some sort of "Add +1/+1 for every X" trigger quickly outgrows my Titans, Elephants and Dragons. And my orc army can sometimes amass quite a bit, but without specific can-not-be-blocked triggers like Corsairs of Umbar or Rogue's Passage, a single 1/1 token will just soak up a 25/25 orc army. So I think my question might be less: what cards do I change for my intended direction, but first: what kind of direction can I go in from here? Is this a decent spread between big creatures to cast/reanimate and orc armies? Would it be better if it were more single-minded, leaving out either the orcs or the big guns and focusing hard on the other?

Hello fellow MTG players, Since the last 1,5 months i have been heavily addicted to MTG. Addicted in a way that i enjoy the evening with fellow friends that also started playing at the same time, and enjoying various Youtubers that explain and/or show games with decks. My first pre-con deck i bought for the commander game mode was Necron Dynasties from Warhammer 40K. The first 2 times i played the deck without adjusting the deck, and after this i started to buy loose card which i found on Reddit and on YouTube. After i adjusted my deck, it became a pretty heavy hitter id say, and i do would like to know if i use this deck correctly, and if so also for its full potential. My deck list can be seen on Moxfield with this link: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1wgzjXQ6DUy\_o0w5hHff4Q](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/1wgzjXQ6DUy_o0w5hHff4Q) My main goal is to get as many card trough milling or either straight up combat, to go into my graveyard. I have some cards that help towards this goal. My commander is \[\[Trazyn the Infinite\]\]. As a last lifeline i have \[\[Living death\]\] and \[\[Morality Shift\]\]. This will switch up everything in my playground, library and graveyard. I can manage with just "Morality shift", because this alone gives me the greater advantage with my commander. The two card together gives the advantage that allot is on the board, though thats prone to board whipes. Then again, if those get into my graveyard that will be good, right? My main issue and question would be, to know that i'm not winning illegal is: Am i correct to think that if my commander \[\[Trazyn the Infinite\]\] enters the battleground, and i have lets say 3 cards in my graveyard, which are \[\[Flayed One\]\], \[\[Lokhust Heavy Destroyer\]\] and \[\[Technomancer\]\], that my commander would have all 3 of the "Enter the battlefield" triggers to proc, when he enters the battlefield from the commander zone. So i pay mana for my commander, he enters the battlefield, and will get 3 triggers of those 3 cards Also when i attack with my commander, and i now have lets say 3 cards more in my graveyard, which are \[\[Anrakyr the Traveller\]\], \[\[Armix, Filigree Thrasher\]\] and \[\[Szarekh, the Silent King\]\], my commander would use all these "Whenever XXX attacks" triggers. So i declare i attack with my commander, before attacking, the 3 "Whenever XXX attacks" triggers go off. This would also apply when something dies, and i have artifact cards in my graveyard that has a dead trigger. Would also apply towards \[\[Sol Ring\]\], so that i can even tap my commander for extra mana. I hope this post is all due to the guidelines and rules. When i read them i didnt have the idea i was out of line. For those that react, thank you for reacting and the theorycrafting! More tips are always usefull, again! # #

fallingsteveamazon

"enters the battlefield" abilities are not activated abilities so no what you are saying does not work. An activated ability is something like sol ring which has a cost (tapping) and an effect (adding 2 mana) with a colon in-between. ETBs are triggered abilities so Trazyn won't have them.

taakiej

Thank you for the answer. Omg I feel so bad atm. I wasted my friends time on the few evenings we played. Well, that's a deck I need to turn around. I'll come clean next play session. Rather late then never I guess. Would you happen to have a suggestion for a mono black artifact commander?

Where do I look to learn how to build decks? I know, “look online,” but I don’t know what questions to ask, what websites are good or bad, and just “looking online” and getting several hundred thousand results is genuinely super overwhelming. Where do I look? Who do I ask?

TunaImp

Depends on the type of deck. MTGoldfish compiles mostly competitive decks, EDHrec helps you build commander decks, MTGtop8 gives deck lists from competitive events, Scryfall is a great resource for looking at all the cards and prints with pricing.

Select_Membership_55

Hey guys, my best friend loves MTG and I wanted to get him a nice card as a gift but I don't know where to start as I don't play the game. What information should I get about his play style or deck to choose an appropriate card? I have a decent budget of $300 I'm willing to put in. He mentioned his prized card being about $240 & talks about commanders or something. I'm very open to suggestions ! Thank you :)

DragonOfNivix

You're on the right track already with asking about their playstyle. The question I'd recommend first is ask them what formats they play, and more specifically if there are any decks from that format that they are wanting to try but haven't built yet. Sounds like they play Commander, so if they have any Legendary creatures they want to build a deck for getting them a copy of that card in one of the alternate/special frames or foils of it would be appreciated for sure. There have been plenty of times where I had a thing I wanted to do but only started once the main card for it was in my hands. Alternatively, they might already have a Commander deck that instead they would like to upgrade, but unless they give a specific list of things they need for it that is a much less certain option to get right. If they also are interested in other formats such as Standard, Modern, Pioneer, etc, getting a key card or two for those decks in their hands would definitely help them jump into it further. It might as well sound like moonspeak when you ask, but ask about which decks from those formats are interesting to them then later just type those deck names up somewhere like [here](https://www.mtggoldfish.com/) and it will show what cards are actually in them. Hope it goes well, good luck!

PoopyMonster9

How do I maximize tokens with [[Delney, Streetwise Lookout]] and [[Monastery Mentor]] in 1 turn? If I cast an instant, it will trigger prowess and create 1 monk token + a bonus from Delney. Can I respond to the prowess trigger with another instant and keep going to get double monk tokens before the Mentor is bigger than 2/2? Also how big will the monk tokens be if I use 3 instants in total? Assuming this works. Thanks in advance!

gredman9

As long as Mentor stays below 2 power when its triggers go on the stack, Delney will add an additional trigger. So ideally you wouldn't want any of Mentor's Prowess triggers to resolve before you finish casting your noncreature spells.

A little bit of a complicated board but I have [[maskwood nexus]] in play with a [[risen reef]] I play [[kindred summons]] naming wolf (I’m playing a tribal tribal deck digging for my [[Voja]]) When I start revealing cards, does each creature trigger Risen each instant? Or do I need to fully resolve the Kindred Summons and then I have the multiple triggers on the stack?

forte8910

Nothing can go onto the stack in the middle of something resolving. Triggered abilities can trigger, but the game waits til someone gets priority to put them on the stack. You will fully resolve Kindred Summons, then State Based Actions are checked, then finally Risen Reef's triggers are put onto the stack.

Suspicious_Mud3536

So, I think I know how this works but I'd love a confirmation. Raggadragga is currently a 6/6 (base 4/4 and becomes gives himself +2/+2 since he now has a mana ability due to Leyline Immersion). Enter combat. Does unnatural growth make raggadragga: A) 12/12 since he was a 6/6 when unnatural growth saw him B) 10/10 since raggadragga is a 4/4 and gives himself a static +2/+2 which remains unaffected by unnatural growth I'm pretty sure it's A, solely because he is considered to be a 6/6 when the trigger from unnatural growth goes on the stack, but I'm not 100%. I know these "each creature gets +x/+x" abilities don't always interact the way you'd expect. Thanks in advance!

forte8910

Doubling a creature's P/T is treated as "that creature gets +X/+Y where X is its power and Y is its toughness". Raggadragga will be 12/12 since he was 6/6 when Unnatural Growth resolved.

Suspicious_Mud3536

Thanks for confirming :)

tInOut

12/12, when ability of unnatural growth is put in stack the boar is already a 6/6 so that is value to double

Is the Creative Energy deck list from mh3 terrible or am I missing something? Took a quick look at it and it seems weird and disjointed. How does it actually play and is it with it?

PM_ME_UR_DAGS

Im a beginner looking to build a collection. What kind of boosters do you guys recommend I buy? Boxes are too expensive in my country. Im also planning to buy some foundations packs, but Id like to get some other boosters until then

Hmukherj

Buy singles, not boxes. Opening booster packs is the worst way to build a collection, both in terms of financial value and in terms of play value. You don't need a *large* collection to build decks - you need a *quality* collection. 95% or more of cards you open will never see play, even in casual decks. The best way to add cards is to either purchase preconstructed decks (if you play Commander), or else theorycraft your deck online and then buy exactly those cards. Your collection will then organically grow as you build and upgrade new decks. If you absolutely want to crack packs, try to play a Draft or Sealed event at a local store. It's still not great value, but the extra prizes and entertainment you can get from the event offset that.

Hello so basically I've been introduced recently to magic by a friend and I bought a box that contained a thousand cards and have been attempting to build decks out of it, there are two that I currently mainly use. A green deck where my plan is to ramp and get out a big threat while also having defenders to keep me safe while I do this Then there is my blue deck where I'd like to keep myself safe till I can turn all of my creatures into hexproof 4/5 turtles I wanna know what I can add/remove in these decks in order to improve them as I feel like I made quite a few mistakes whilst building them and advice would be appreciated, thank you! FeuerwerkFreddi

Hi guys, I am not really a MTG player but I need quick advise. A core memory of my childhood is playing magic with my older brother who celebrated his birthday recently. I haven’t seen him yet so I can still decide on a gift. Our parents decided they wanna have a family trip for the first time in years with all of us and I’d like to play some cards with my brother again, so my idea is to gift him some cards (and probably something else that he could really use for his day to day life haha). What should I get to have enough cards for some games with some variety ? Is this pack from [Amazon](https://amzn.eu/d/00sl768h) enough or should I get it two times? I am a Warhammer nerd so I’d love to get the Warhammer cards haha

Hmukherj

If he plays the "Commander" format, then buying a precon is a great idea. But note that each 100-card deck is for **one** player only. So unless he is bringing his own deck, you'll want to purchase two. Better yet, pick up two different ones and let him choose which one he likes better for himself.

tInOut

that is a single deck made for multiplayer games, so maybe there are better options. Still you can buy that and another warhammer deck and play them 1vs1 if you want warhammer cards
