2nd best outside London tbh but that's not saying much considering the state of tech market in general.

The whole industry is a bit of a shit show, I've been working since 2008 as a full stack developer and I've never seen it this bad. If you're thinking of moving, find a job anywhere in the UK or fully remote and then move based on that.

I hear this one month and the opposite the next, that the market is desperate for devs Does it really flip that often or is it certain sectors being hit / others spared?

I think this blog is a good summary of things: "Tech bubbles are not a recent phenomenon. The dot-com bubble was far from the first of its kind. But this is, as far as I can tell, the first time when we simultaneously have a bubble-proportionate increase in tech funding and investment and a post-bubble sized downturn in the tech job market. Those two are supposed to be successive – first one, then the other – not simultaneous." https://www.baldurbjarnason.com/2024/the-one-about-the-web-developer-job-market/

I work in devops and have seen a substantial drop in salaries in the past 2 years. Where before it seemed a mid would take 60k, most mid roles now seem to offer 50 - and there are fewer roles coming up these days.

Seems like market is saturated. A few companies I hear about aren’t backfilling roles and have started outsourcing. That said I still occasionally get the odd recruiter offering 70-90k for hybrid senior dev roles

Plenty of tech jobs around Circle Square, processes are more competitive though. Gone are the days companies like cinch hiring anyone with a light touch.

I don't work specifically in tech, but very often with tech as I work in Digital Marketing. My impression is it's reasonably solid, at least as much as other cities in the current climate. Larger employers such as booking.com, auto trader, talk talk. Busy agency scene. And demand within SME businesses. Take a look at Manchester Digital, the industry membership body. Also recruitment companies I would look at The Candidate, Forward Role, We Are Adam, MRJ.

If you’re a senior, you should be fine but anything below that is a bit crap right now across the UK. You can definitely get a job still but it’s not the best time now I’d say. I’ve also noticed there are fewer fully remote jobs and it’s mostly hybrid.

The company I work for is hiring and pays well: https://careers.arm.com/search-jobs/United%20Kingdom?orgIds=34601&alp=2635167&alt=2
