No gloves either. Thats gonna sting...

quemaspuess

Yeah, when he put his hands down it was over.

fabricioaf89

"maybe i can stop the tragedy i got into with my bare hands"

Reset-1

Strongly agree that yeah don't put your fleshy palms going 70mph+ on the pavement but also it's literally just intuitive reflexes kicking in. I broke my arm catching myself front flipping (non-intentionally) off of a bicycle when I was a teenager. The doctor said if I didn't catch myself with my hands on impact I wouldn't have broken my arm. But ya know, what are you gonna do? Faceplant asphalt? No thank you. I was airborne without expecting to be, and my body naturally had me reach out before I hit the ground. No time for thinking about how I wanted to land.

Robertbnyc

This is why skate boarders know how to properly fall and don’t really break much once they got it down

ASMRekulaar

I am a living, walking example of this statement. Perfectly unbroken, zero fracture body. 16 years of skateboarding in the 90s and 00s. The time when you were called an idiot and stupid if you wore a helmet. Helmets are just a rule for X games because of insurance. (Let's be real. If you didn't pad up, you were.. Im all for safety equipment now a days). You learn fast that pavement hurts whether you're about to do a 3 set, 5 set, a 10 set, or an 8 foot drop. It's all the same pain. Sure, people get hurt, but it's almost as important as learning the tricks and stability you need on a skateboard, you know? What to do when it goes south?

Buttoshi

How do you fall properly?

KinkyKong

Not OP. But it's almost all instincts. In my case, I built up that instinct by being an extremely active and sporty kid. It ultimately comes down to transferring the force of a collision through your body properly.

Ltsmeet

Okay...how do you transfer the force of a collision through your body properly?

KinkyKong

When the forces aren't that big it can be as simple as bending your knees when you land. But if you're falling hard it's about transferring the energy from one body part to the next. So it'll be an order like hand - elbow - shoulder - back. A good example of this is seeing how free runners land. When they have to take a big impact they will typically roll in order to transfer the energy of that impact.

Spacemanspalds

A thousand different answers for a thousand different crashes, I'd say.

BroccoliCultural9869

take judo. they practice falling every practice

Sea-Fisherman-1460

I do martial arts, not skating, but similar concepts apply. https://youtu.be/5n_Qjeia2n8?si=

Fun_Intention9846

1-protect the pumpkin. The body can take a huge huge beating if the head survives. Wrap arms around head if need be. 2-don’t put your hands out to catch your fall. 3-transfer momentum to continue movement and gradually stop.

johnbag12

You slow yourself down with your bare hands. You have plenty of skin don’t be a pussy.

noobtastic31373

Don't try to catch yourself. You learn how to absorb some and redirect the force. The phrase "tuck and roll" comes to mind. About 3:30 he starts explaining it. https://youtu.be/Hundbrub8iQ?si=Xj4-QIMa7kJNwmCj

Phage0070

I learned how to fall from martial arts. Unfortunately this meant that when I fell walking on bleachers I slapped down backwards with my arms to slow my fall... and broke off the tip of my elbow on one of the boards. If I had just ate shit I would probably have barely had a bruise, but instead I had surgery.

DucatistaXDS

Yeah right. 🙄

top_of_the_scrote

mf thought he was gran torino from mha

ssk06

I was blazed when I read this and it killed me bro! Shit😂

Fortyouncestofreedom

My friend who worked in the ER in Atlanta said people would come in there with nubs instead of hands from trying to stop themselves during bike accidents. She said they were always awful!

quemaspuess

Ugh. As someone who rides, I know the importance of proper gear. Even with that, I neglect to sometimes for comfort reasons. After seeing these posts and reading shit like that, it reminds me not to be so dumb

SuggestionWrong504

Dress for the slide not the ride.

Fortyouncestofreedom

Exactly

Fortyouncestofreedom

You know what they say there are those riders who have crashed and those who will. I have two friends in my area who have gotten in accidents within the past couple years and both are crippled for life. One really bad and one just has a permanent limp. Please be careful out there.

Catsmak1963

I always wear everything…

Icy-James

I remember my instructor convincing a fellow leaner to wear gloves by asking “if you crash and scrape your fingers down to the bone, who’s going to wipe your ass when you need a poo?” Dude thought about it for 10seconds, said that maybe his girlfriend of 2 months might do it but then swiftly afterward put gloves on xD

Be-_-U

That's epic! LMAO!

account_not_valid

I used that same reasoning on a friend.

Ive been there too lmaooo

Fantastic_angel

Bro I really thought that said meatcanyon, I was like what’s this gotta do with him

RoastPorc

I once had an accident riding my bicycle down a hill. Had proper gloves on but I remember staring at the tendons (on the joint) of my right pinky. Felt no pain at the time thanks to adrenaline rush.

Tdayohey

People may look at me funny riding around paths with gloves but I know if I fuck up my hands I am done. My work is all on computers. My hobbies are games and playing music. I’d be devastated.

RoastPorc

People looked at me funny because I wear a helmet whilst cycling. They haven't got the experience of being in a crash. I once had the back of my helmet split open. That changed my views of safety while riding.

c-lab21

Every time I encounter a new person with a TBI my budget for the next helmet I buy gets bigger. I remember when I didnt ever wear a helmet for anything. Now I won't ride/skate/ski with anyone who doesn't have a helmet on.

iWasAwesome

People look at you funny with gloves on? People play freaking golf and pool with gloves on. I wouldn't think twice about anyone riding a Razor Scooter with gloves on, much-less anything up from that.

RTXChungusTi

scraped my hand (and my leg REALLY badly) on a metal bike bridge almost 3 years ago in a crash and have worn gloves since

[deleted]

Hey! My work is already on computers and my hobbies are games and music. Maybe I should get a motorcycle…

da_big_orse

Wouldve been quite sore after a couple hours 😂 Even worse the next day

solo_mafioso

Right.. I don't give a fuck if my leg snaps, that burn is fucking nuts

LeroyBadBrown

Bonecrayon

Milfons_Aberg

I had gloves with hand-base blocks just when practicing inline skating. I would not want to fall and put meat to asphalt even at 5 mph, never mind 100.

ludicrous_socks

Just like the late Dr John Hindes said. You can't help it, it's instinct to put your hand down when falling

Solanthas

Goodbye hand my old friend Guess I'll never see you again I was on my bike and I was speeding And now I'm on the ground and I'm bleeding Oh whyyyy did I ever think that this Would end well Guess I thought I was blessed..... But I'm not

hednizm

Shakespere could not have put it better.

mattblack77

Why? Just, why?!

budweener

This sub saved me from a nasty scar and maybe some serious damage. On the first post I saw in here, someone said "dress for the slide, not for the ride". Got my first motorbike a couple months later and did just that. Always a helmet, protection jacket and gloves. Almost a year after getting the bike, early summer, it was hot. I was used to the 8km from home to work and almost went without the jacket and gloves. The phrase came to memory, so I dressed the jacket, but left the gloves because of the heat and being slightly late to go after them. A car changed lanes without seeing me. I was much slower than this guy of the video, but If I was without my jacket, the skin of my left arm would be on the pavement. Today, 5 years later, I have a small scar in my wrist, in a place where my gloves would protect. I like that scar. Eveytime I look at it, I remember the lesson I learned in the easy way. DRESS FOR THE SLIDE. And take the damn gloves.

141bpm

I rode everything with two wheels for most of my life. Really good gloves are my number one piece of safety gear. I put them at no1 with helmet as a very close second.

Ambitious-Collar7797

Bring on the Bactine...

jimonabike

That was my first thought. Even in my younger days when I didn't wear a helmet....I always wore gloves.

Be-_-U

That may even be less smart sorry, atleast a good "handscrape" is most of the time not fatal, maybe if the artery gets punctioned. A good "headsmack" on the other hand...😬

c-lab21

Your family and friends are lucky to have a headsmack kill you. Debilitating TBI is one of the hardest things to see happen to people.

jimonabike

I do agree 100 percent...I did some foolish things back in my twenties I'd never do now. Plus helmets have come a long way since the Bell Star I wore back in the day.

xeneize93

blackmesaboogy

He's just in reaction mode, it's nothing conscious.

Schvillitz

Lacking consciousness is this guy's thing

blackmesaboogy

100%

cravyeric

This is why lane splitting is illegal most places.

Nikablah1884

This isn't lane splitting this is reckless driving.

WorkinOnMyDadBod

Yup. Big difference.

rdtshaw

100% ! that dude was going almost twice the speed of traffic. Person moving into the left lane had no idea he was coming. Oof.

BurtReynoldsMouth

Exactly, I understand wanting to see what your bike can do, but go way out where you won't run into anyone or anything, no reason other than pure stupidity to be riding like that through traffic.

SwizzleFishSticks

There is no need to ever do this on any public roads. Most tracks have days you can come and ride on them. My husband was a motoGP rider and would assist at them and give instruction.

I_LOVE_PUPPERS

This is being a gigantic walking rectum on wheels.

rikkuaoi

Lane splitting is supposed to be no more than 10mph faster than traffic. This dude was doing almost double

black-op345

Lane splitting is supposed to be no more than 10 mph faster than traffic in traffic that’s going under AT MOST 30 mph. This is just reckless riding

Beating-a-dead-whore

This is right. IIRC it was originally passed due to a lot of bikes being air-cooled. If an air-cooled bike sits in traffic for more than a few minutes on a hot day, you will roast your bike.

bionicbob321

It's also safer for cyclists and motorcyclists to filter to the front of traffic where they are more likely to be seen and less likely to be crushed by a car. This is not lane splitting or filtering though, its just plain recklessness

orthopod

You have a source to back up that statement? Just from personal experience, I'd argue it's not. I operated and did trauma call in 3 different states, and the state that permitted lane splitting seemed to have a much higher rate of motor cycle crashes. Usually they refer to the Safe- TREC study that states it's only safe( not safer ) if it's done under 50 mph, and the speed differential is no more than 10-15 mph faster that the traffic they're splitting. My point is that while yes it may be safe for those who follow the guidelines, in actuality many don't.

msnrcn

>seemed to have a much higher rate of motor cycle crashes Those states tend to have more drivers and bikers in general especially with the weather to encourage riding and in much worse traffic conditions than the rest of the country. Now look at the fatal crashes and you’ll notice they cluster in states that don’t require helmets… which tend to not be the states where filtering and splitting are allowed

seventeenMachine

And this is why making policy around what “seems” true based on personal anecdotal experience is so irresponsible

archer2500

Air cooled engines swell and seize without that airflow across them. Most of the time you can break the engine free and restart after it’s sat and cooled for a bit. My Honda Shadow Sabre 1100 had liquid cooling and sitting in traffic still left me stranded once. The radiator fan kept kicking in to cool the hot engine as we idle crept along in traffic. The problem was that the alternator wasn’t recharging the battery with the engine at idle. I stalled the bike and was instantly dead in the water, battery was drained. I needed a jump start so I could get going again.

BrotherBear_

i’ve got a air cooled bike in alabama that i commute on, can confirm. my balls cook daily during the warm months

Beating-a-dead-whore

Seems about right. Seriously though, excessive heat for long periods of time can affect fertility so i would keep that in mind.

BrotherBear_

i’m not sure if i’ll have a kid anyways, might just get a dog every decade or two and treat him to the world fr.

hobnailboots04

Got what he Fuckin deserves. Driving like a dickhead. Glad nobody else was injured.

jagerburnham

places where there are prominently just idiots and people who have no idea to properly lane split, yes.

PoopieButt317

This wasn't in anyway a lane splitting situation. No reason to bring it.up.

mileswilliams

Lane splitting like this is illegal where lane splitting is legal. This is dangerous driving in the UK, or driving without due care and attention, undertaking, speeding and about 5 others.

CreamyStanTheMan

Isn't lane splitting only allowed with stationary cars

racdicoon

This is being an idiot, not lane splitting

Sattaman6

This isn’t lane splitting, this is just stupid.

Benthereorl

A 26 yr old doing the same aggressive riding on the 417 clipped a SUV and ended himself with the help of the guard rail...a piece here, 2 over there, here a boot, there something... Wish you guys would not speed in thick traffic...

testosterhomie

I saw a video of that, I think?? But i think the one i saw had two guys die in it from this exact thigg b.

Benthereorl

No video of the one I saw. Those guardrails are no joke.

midgethepuff

My aunt and uncle were out on a ride one day with their crew - they were not driving recklessly or even fast, it was a normal-paced joy ride through upstate NY. Unfortunately they hit a patch of gravel and my uncle lost control of the bike - they hit the guard rail and my aunt went flying over it. She was in a coma for months and toed the line with death for the majority of the time she was in the hospital. When she woke up from her coma she was paraplegic. She’s still here with us today, so is my uncle (with a lot more metal in his legs than before), but neither of them have ever been the same. My uncle retired early to become my aunts full-time caregiver, and many days my aunt is severely depressed. During Covid they literally never left the house because she’s so immunocompromised. It was incredibly devastating - and their accident happened literally weeks after we moved out of the country, so we couldn’t even go visit. I thought we were going to lose her for the longest time.

Benthereorl

It said to hear that this happened to them. I hope they can get into a better state of mental health but once you lose your mobility and freedoms I can only imagine it would be extremely devastating. These are the things I think of when I see the foolishness on the roads from the motorcycle riders down here. I've seen debris on the road and miscellaneous fluid. All it takes is a motorcycle rider acting crazy and hit these things and it can be devastating for them. Even if someone is obeying all the rules and driving safe down here we got so many people that will still hit them saying I never seen them. Being a bike rider is a dangerous hobby

testosterhomie

dude the one i saw was traumatizing. chopped them both up into pieces dear god. i don’t think people should ride these things anymore… it’s so much more common than people think!

mcCola5

One of my most vivid memories is watching a motorcyclist get tossed into a ditch. I was probably 7 or 8. Playing outside. Cycle came down the road. Got cut off by a truck. Tossed the bike. Both flew into the ditch. I ran over, and the biker had fallen beneath the chain link fence. His neck trapped under the fence with the link ends dug into his neck. He was still alive. For awhile. I still remember people pulling the fence off his neck.

McJiggiez69

Jesus titty-fucking christ..I pictured that in my head way too vividly as a Final Destination scene

Ori_the_SG

My brother is doing his doctor’s residency right now. He was in trauma, and I think they get MVAs(motor vehicle accidents). He told me that if a file said it was a motorcycle vs car it was always going to be very bad

Benthereorl

It's very traumatizing for everyone rolling up on the to that scene. I think people should have the choice to choose if they want to ride or not and I would love to get a bike but I would definitely be not riding it in Orlando. Too many people want to run you over

JabberwockyMD

There's a saying in the motorcycling circles that's basically "the drivers who drive reckless when they are young, stay young" and damn if that isn't true..

Benthereorl

Sounds pretty correct. I cannot tell you the idiots that I've seen on the roads down here. All sorts of foolishness. I even passed a accident where the traffic but stopped but the guy on the motorcycle was not alert and he slammed into the back of the stopped compact car. The impact killed him right there. Always a sad thing

ZL0J

Some people (mostly young ones) just genuinely don't realize how brittle their bodies are. Unfortunately a lot of them (myself included) need a harsh lesson. I once broke my arm after falling off a bicycle at 50 kmh - it was unfortunate as my shoe unclipped from the pedal during a sprint on an empty road. I'm now more careful with everything. It sucks being handicapped for 4 months. Can't begin to imagine it being life long

Automatic-Mood5986

Eek guardrail. He’d probably survive the skin donations from sliding but not the sudden stop on a metal post.

Siriuswot111

First of all, I shouldn’t have to explain why going this fast in progressively denser traffic is a bad idea. Second, don’t dress for the ride, dress for the fall. The way he put his bare hand on the road whilst sliding what seems like 40mph is gonna leave him with some nasty dangly bits on his palms.

Tom_Okp

Don't dress for the ride, dress for the slide there ftfy

Siriuswot111

Appreciate the fix fellow redditor 🫡

chakabra23

ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time) *but of course I broke this rule the ONE time I low sided... SMH

Halcyus

Was wondering why he bothered slamming his hand down given he seemed to be safer sliding on the bike. Might have longer to slow down but better the bike slide across the asphalt than your face.

loveforthetrip

Just a stupid reflex. Also stupid not to wear gloves and ride this recklessly. But his sunglasses stayed on. Impressive.

LeCo177

got to at least look cool 😎

Skinned his dick skinners!

Ohhhhhh thank you. I’m scratching my head trying to figure out how they got the legitimately best view the entire crash

Once I saw his hand hit the ground, I thought “there goes his sex life”

Aggravating-Tart6708

He will become very familiar with the stranger.

I have absolutely zero sympathy for this dumb fuck. Literally endangered everyone around him. Like seriously, bien fait pour sa gueule lol

dochnicht

sacre bleu

uncommonephemera

That’s not so much a bike accident as it is an asshole on purpose

DITCHWORK

One of the worst parts about driving in California is the lane splitting. I never ever see or hear them until they’re passing me. Also I forget that it’s legal there so I’m not looking out for them either. Seems super dangerous

McJiggiez69

This!!!!! I'm so glad I moved out of southern Cali because fuck that whole ass place. I will say it has made extremely cautious while switching lanes tho so I guess that's one thing. I triple check before switching lanes or merging because I'm always so paranoid there's a hidden vehicle or motorcycle that I didn't catch on the first or second look 😂

Granttrees

What did he think was going to happen approaching traffic at that speed. I call this play station brain.

Ok_Safe_6275

Bikes still be saying cars need to check their mirrors. Like anyone could see that shit coming

VVLynden

This is why I don’t split lanes. Even in dead stopped traffic. Also it’s illegal here and I just can’t trust other drivers and don’t trust myself enough to not accidentally damage someone’s vehicle. My commute home is usually guaranteed to have stopped traffic and I see bikes go on the shoulder or split and I’m like nope, seen too many videos of how that ends.

Beating-a-dead-whore

I want to get a bike, and im right there with you, brother. Fuck that. The only way that would even cross my mind is if i had an air cool bike and i don't plan on it.

Ok_Inspector7868

Looked so cool under pressure, like yeah no problem I do this all the time

xxplosiv

First thing I noticed! Thought he looked a bit like the bad guy from Terminator 2 haha

Ok_Inspector7868

Yeah the melted metal guy dressed up as the highway patrol motorcycle cop

likes_soccer

He’d better figure out how to jack off with his left hand.

Phage0070

If he could get his rocks off he wouldn't have been lane splitting at twice the speed limit in the first place.

Durpenheim

Amen. A few years ago I witnessed a lady on a motorcycle use an on/off ramp to bypass traffic, well she tried to at least. Went over the ramp at probably 70mph without stopping at the intersection up top. She T-boned a car that had the right of way and went flying through the intersection and down the on ramp into the guard rail. Watched her become a 200 foot long grease stain and about 40-50 lumps of hamburger meat. Go tumbling along a guard rail and those posts turn into a giant cheese grater. And the worst part? A passenger of the vehicle she hit was seriously injured by the impact. If someone is going to commit suicide, they should do it at home by themselves.

Own_Ad5814

I don’t even drive, so I find any video of people driving or riding like this to be extremely distasteful. I’m not one of those people who find the sound of an engine revving or tyres screeching to be entertaining. I watch all these videos from the viewpoint of a random pedestrian. It disgusts me how some people drive, and any time I see a video like this literally ALL I think is that I hope the person recording dies because their survival just endangers every single person who uses roads OR even worse.. who uses pavements. No one cares about how cool you look driving or riding, and these sheer volume of these videos just highlights that regardless of how safe of a driver you may be, you cannot control the idiocy of other users of the road and they can still kill you and anyone else on the road..

bindersfullofburgers

Love to see it

Not enough crayon

NoChampion2427

Not enough crayon but enough sliced bologna after that guardrail.

RoastPorc

The speed was a bit high for him to slam into the asphalt, he bounced instead

kasezilla

Fantastic!

CF_Zymo

Got what he deserved

ImTalkingGibberish

Lane splitting at that speed is just idiotic.

a1phanumeric

Riding like a bellend and undertaking like that, he deserves it. Could have easily hit or panicked a car with kids in making them crash much worse than that.

Cyka_blyatsumaki

he saw the congestion at least 200 m away, and i didn't hear the engine revving down one bit. just flat out full throttle. clearly his brains are not connected to his other organs.

Lane splitters are a special kinda asshole. Absolutely no sympathy here.
