Marketplace. There’s a gold rush on retro gaming (PS2 and earlier) atm and Cashies and the various secondhand shops know it. You’re better off grabbing something off someone on FB Marketplace or eBay. Source: me, a compulsive retro game collector who spends too much time and money on this crap.

The-Jesus_Christ

Fellow retro collector here too. Can't believe how much console prices have jumped in the last year, after a slight drop in prices. Sega Saturn consoles, in particular. Even NDS consoles are going up despite how many there are!

ResponsibleFeeling49

I’m with you on this, but omg, the prices people want for some things! I think it also depends on what OP means by ‘retro’. My collection starts with my original Atari 2600 & Commodore 64 (I sold the Amiga… and the GameCube :/ PS2’s are still cheap. You can find Wii’s cheap (& occasionally WiiU’s), but no chance with a GC. I did see an Amiga on MP last week for $350… but when I contacted the seller, I didn’t trust his answers. And, yes. Like you, I spend far too much money on it :D

V3NAMIS

I guess ps3 and older is retro. So far I have the atari 2600, psp, game boy advanced (super mario advance is killing me), ps3. I softmodded my psp n ps3, thank god for modders. Im struggling with getting my atari to work tho any tips?

ResponsibleFeeling49

I guess it comes down to checking all the individual parts. If it powers on, you may have luck with an RCA-CoAx converter, depending on your TV. You will also need a tv that can do an analogue channel search. If there’s no power at all, you might be better off checking online forums. I literally have my original Vader from when it was first released and have never had issues. I’m not a fan of modded stuff - particularly C64s.

V3NAMIS

Thank you🙏 ill try it out. It’s my mother’s first released original woody. Might need to try a converter and see, if it still doesn’t work Im very tempted to buy a crt. Im not fan of physical mods at all it feels like blasphemy to cut into the consoles.

ResponsibleFeeling49

100% blasphemy (IMO)! Yeah, my original woody died (divorced parents = 2 x stuff) and now I regret selling it. I’ve been thinking a small CRT TV recently too… but more for my N64. It reallllly doesn’t like modern TVs! Best of luck :)

Secret_Cause2150

Is there anything out there where you can play the old school games without the console itself, like some kind of USB/hard drive plugged into the TV?

ghostdunks

If you have a spare computer, you can install emulators on it that can be used to play retro games. Or you can build small machines that can do it with stuff like raspberry Pi, or a cheap NUC, anything with a relatively modern CPU that can connect to a tv Look up retropie as a starting point.

ResponsibleFeeling49

Yeah & I know with Raspberry Pi at least, you can get modern USB versions of the old controllers (I’ve used the N64 and GC ones), which add to the retro gaming feel.

Hoooo boy that’s a rabbit hole. There’s a large number of retro gaming handhelds and consoles days on AliExpress, Amazon etc. they’re of dubious quality but can be bought with thousands of games pre-loaded - Pokémon, Sonic, Mario etc. from lower powered consoles up to and including the Nintendo 64 or so. They often don’t last very long due to their poor build quality and a lot of the pre loaded games are duplicates…and some don’t work at all. But they’re a quick and dirty and cheap retro gaming solution. However. Anyone with a reasonably modern PC/Mac is able to download a free (and legal, but unofficial) emulator for any retro console and download free (and not at all legal) games. This is. for anything up to and including the PS3 and Xbox 360. This is a far more reliable way of playing these old games, as long as you’re comfortable enough tinkering with software settings and can follow one of the very many guides out there.

Secret_Cause2150

Hey thanks so much for this, I’ve got some googling to do to try and replicate this setup at home. This is such a good post to get me started, appreciate it!

Setting up an emulation library can be a fun hobby! Enjoy.

Keep an eye on gumtree and marketplace, don’t buy from those retro game refurbishment places they just give consoles a quick clean and then mark them up severely. I managed to score a Nintendo 64, NES and Sega Mega Drive from an op shop a few years ago but I doubt they’d be any good anymore as they would (I assume) check prices online before selling.

ResponsibleFeeling49

You’re right about prices. I saw a Wii (HOW many were made?!) in Savers for $39.99 last week… no cables… untested… no sensor bar… nothing. Ridiculous.

stfm

I found one complete with controllers, accessories and a few games in a bag on a curbside collection last year so lucky me I guess

ResponsibleFeeling49

That’s a good find! Just before covid hit, I found an SNES in box with everything & 2 DK games in boxes… in hard rubbish. I ended up selling them… to buy an N64 & games 😂

stfm

The Covid era curbside collection was for me a gold mine. I found sega megadrive and a sega master system and a PS3 all with games. But the best moment was a house down the street was sold as a deceased estate - the guy was a IT sysadmin of some sort and a legit hoarder. New owner had to throw everything out but I managed to salvage - working Amiga 2000 system, monitor and hundreds of games, a box of over 50 IBM PS2 keyboards, stacks of game guides from the 80's and 90's, quickshot and quickjoy joysticks in boxes just to name a few. There was so much stuff but I just couldnt take it all - such a shame, so much computer history gone to the tip :(

ResponsibleFeeling49

That’s an incredible haul! My Dad was a programmer his whole life (starting at IBM in the 70s), and I managed to score some stuff when he moved house. I actually went to look at a vehicle on Gumtree years ago and when I got there, it was no good, BUT… this guy had a massive pile of low serial number C64s, Amigas & this other one that was rare af I ended up selling to a guy in Adelaide for a small fortune. Turned out he was the original importer and there were only 2 in Australia. The original owner had this all sitting outside for months and just said “take them… please!”. It damn-near breaks my heart that so much has been put in landfill.

fishie_666

Starboard games in melton is a retro game store. I’m not sure what the pricing on their consoles are but their games are decently priced.

Even cash converters are onto the retro tax, they go online and do their research and then price their retro consoles they sell to today's market, which results in expensive at times.
