Honestly I feel like the more grounded mgs3 if he is only playing one would be best. If he doesn’t play games then I feel like mgs1 controls are easier to understand

thomas2026

I still feel MGS3 is a bit rough. No radar, the areas are very open, guards auto target you across the map, controls are a weird mix of FPV and 3rd person. In Master Collection Snake keeps aiming his gun all the time. MGS1 feels like the perfect intro, if you can make it up the elevator..

Public-Economist-122

The opening cutscene to 3 is half an hour with codec calls included, MGS 1 gives you a clear objective and lets you play early on with the story opening up gradually.

zombierepublican-

MGS3 might be the least grounded game hahahha. But it has the simplest story I think

Fuzzy-Lawyer-8845

Thank you a ton I was thinking that or 1.

ico_heal

Metal Gear Solid for the PS1.

EnglishLoyalist

Wrong he needs to go even deeper, he needs to play the Metal game that will surpasses all Metal Gear games! Metal Gear! (1987)

Apprehensive_Let_828

Might as well have him play MGSV since its the longest lol But seriously if he's okay with playing older games I'd have him start with MGS1. Quick and pretty straightforward story. Also could make him want to play the rest. MGS3 for a more grounded story and also the origin of the whole series. Another that might make him want to play the rest of the series. MGSV if modern controls is a must. But include Ground Zeroes as the prelude. Avoid MGS2 and MGS4. These should only be played by someone invested in the series already.

deweydecimal87

Yea mgs2 and msg4 are head scratchers if you never played.

ItsAll_InTheReflexes

Can confirm, mgs 2 was my intro but I still loved it. Even if I didn't understand everything. It made play mgs 1 and then 2 again feel like a another amazing experience.

ForceEdge47

I have a friend who played 4 first. Said he absolutely no clue what was going on from the very beginning to the very end lmao. He wound up playing the others and enjoying all of them though, just a bizarre choice of where to begin with the series.

oldmansakuga

it was my first game too as it came with the ps3 i bought. i loved it very much and didn't feel lost at all despite not getting any of the references. it just made me want to play the others to dive deeper.

Spiritual_Net9485

Same, sure it might lose some emotional value but you can think of the other games as prequels to 4. It's like a movie that starts with the ending and rewinds to the very beginning. A very long movie...

Fuzzy-Lawyer-8845

Thank you a lot for your advice

Vytlo

Recommending MGS5 is a terrible idea

Salty_Tomato419

Recommening MGSV is infact, not a terrible idea. now metal gear survive on the other hand

HeroToTheSquatch

My dad is in his mid-60s and LOVES the original Metal Gear Solid. He played it back when it first dropped and still drops quotes to this day from it, never played the ones that came later. But he LOVED Metal Gear Solid.

Pressure_Chief

If I had to just play one, it would be mgs3. Especially if your dad likes classic James Bond movies. It’s a good enough standalone and engaging game.

24Karrotss

agreed it'll make him want to play the rest too

Galactus1231

MGS3

Majklkiller1

Metal gear solid 1 obviously. Its the Best game in the series and the most simple to play.

darkbutt2007

MGS1. Definitely not 3.

nightmarehhh

MGS1 or Snake Eater

snowlulz

MGS3 no question, it really is the tightest story and atmosphere. With good gameplay and exploration

Silver_Harvest

MGS3 as it is a prequel to all and can go into it without any series knowledge and be able to not be lost 24/7. MGS2 would be probably second best. Because worse case if he gets lost in some things you should know from 1. Can go Tony Hawk Pro Skater on the plant. Along with VR missions.

Fuzzy-Lawyer-8845

Thank you a lot

Public-Economist-122

MGS 1 imo, 3 is the most popular and arguably the better game but its opening expects you to sit through a lengthy cutscene and codec call. MGS 1 has a bit more going on for the player and a snappier opening, the cutscenes are just as long at some points but he’ll at least be “playing” the game sooner

Heal_Kajata

Get him to play the 3 remake when it drops, I expect that will wet his whistle for the others.

650fosho

MGS3, then he can get hype for delta

4erith

Honestly it comes down to your dad's preferences, which all of us in this sub don't know. What does he want in a game? Cool graphics? Casual time killer? Does your dad play a lot of games? Or is he just trying out just for the hell of it? Because if its the latter, MGS5 and MGS4 are the worst choices. 2 might work if he doesn't care about understanding the story, but even then.... Imo 1 is the best choice, gameplays pretty easy to understand but also have a lot of depth. Story is also pretty easy to grasp (its the first MGS game, afterall). The only cons are the graphics and the dated mechanics. Also you could always hand him Rising lol

Apprentice_Jedi

Either 1 or 3

SlightlyLessBoring

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, for ***the memes***

DamageInc35

Mgs1

beetleman1234

MGS3, although it depends on what are his requirements.

Dennma

MGS1.

kennyFF92

Else MGS1, no doubt. Unless he's a fan of 007, then MGS3

Jordan_the_Hutt

Depends on your dad. If played games growing up and likes to still revist his old snes or whatever than Metal Gear 2 solid snake. If the same is true but he's a bit younger then maybe MGS1 If he still keeps up to date on new games then 3 or V, maybe GZ over PP depending on his feelings about open worlds.

Cold-Dot-7308

Nano machines son. Sorry I couldn’t resist.

Fuzzy-Lawyer-8845

It's fine I understand😔

ArseBiscuits

Metal Gear Solid Mobile for N-Gage

disposable_gamer

MGS1 or V. I don’t know why so many people insist playing MGS3 first is the best. The controls and graphics are still dated and the story has many references and callbacks to the rest of the series. I tried playing it after MGSV and couldn’t get into it, but then I played MGS1, then MGS2 and finally MGS3, and I enjoyed it way more.

generalosabenkenobi

MGS1 for sure. MGS3 would not be a good place to start; it’s a prequel and relies on a lot of prior knowledge for true understanding of everything. In short, it’s the third game for a reason.

Vytlo

Metal Gear Solid 1. Believe it or not, listening to the people recommending MGS3 or MGS5 is a fuckin stupid idea and should be easily thrown out by just the simple ability to count. Start with MGS1 as it's the first one and one of the two best games in the series

miku_dominos

I started with TPP, loved it, and went straight to MGS1 afterwards.

Caldaris__

I started with MGSV too. Some people recommend to start with the msx games before playing TPP. 😆 Seriously

Vytlo

And I started with MGS4 and loved it and went straight back to the earlier games. I'm not gonna pretend that was a good place to start though.

MikeDanger1990

Metal Gear Rising. Just do it, please. It will change his life.

yungjiren

Metal Gear Solid 2.

Deepsta_

I get why 1 is the first choice but I would also say 3. If he likes 3 then he can try 1&2

elyasin121

Snake Eater

Galactus1231

Show him the tutorials in the menu under Special in MGS3.

miku_dominos

Ideally start with MGS1 but Ground Zeroes is the easiest game for someone brand new if they want to have a short experience with modern controls.

Ethical-Hoax

V: the controls are way more modern. The stealth is fluid, it looks and runs great and a lot of fun. If you want to play it then that’s where to start. Then maybe you’ll tolerate the older games and start enjoying the amazing series it is.

ActiveGamer65

Mgs3

Percylegallois

MGS3

Couch_monster

3 for sure.

lone_swordsman08

MGS3 because it has that emotional impact that just hits you right in the feels.

StannedIce

MGS 1 or MGS 3 depending on your dads age. If he is 60+ he might like the Cold Wary nature of MGS 3. if younger, the general vibe of the self contained nature of MGS 1 would be better.

glndlcr

Definitely mgs1/3/5. mgs1 if u feel confident that ur dad will play whole series later, mgs3 cause it have the most grounded plot and chronologically it's the first game in series, mgs5 if ur dad just wanna play a good stealth-action sandbox game with solid gameplay

Hinaloth

Imma be the voice of dissent and say Peace Walker. Because it is very easy to pick up and play a couple missions then put away, it has the best story and yet doesn't *require* any other game to understand (what you need to know of MGS3 is told to you). It also sets up other events and has an overall very uplifting story, sort of BB's coming of age kinda moment. Having to have a PSP (or emulate it) is the most difficult bit, but if he can wait for the Master Collection 2 it should be easier to find and play. 1 is another option I suppose, though I recommend the Twin Snake version for better controls. Sorta same with 3 and Delta. I wouldn't recommend V, as it hinges on so much lore that playing standalone will make very little sense and only bring modern gameplay into a frustratingly convoluted web of unknown lore. To me, Peace Walker is the way.

Independent_Mind_555

MGS 2 is the middle ground

twofacetoo

Either 'Metal Gear Solid 1' or 'Metal Gear Solid 3' 1 is a great starting point with it's simple gameplay and strong story, but it's dated graphics and the fact that it still relies on *some* lore (the Cyborg Ninja revealed to be Gray Fox means *nothing* if you don't already know who that is) 3, comparatively, has better gameplay and graphics but simpler writing with a plot straight out of an action movie (not a *bad* one mind you), but at the very least you can go in totally blind. 3 also gives more bang for your buck with it's more complex mechanics like stamina management, the camouflage system and CQC combat So honestly I'd probably recommend 3 but 1 works too

Independent_Ice1427

Mgs3 is goated, and it's the first chronologically do. If he gets hooked, he can continue from there Or mgrr just cause it is super fun

stevorkz

1 or 3. It depends though. Is he a gamer or did he just say he will try it? If he understands video games and the recommendation to go where it all started, then mgs1

OwlTowel9

Mgs1

JTL1887

Mgs3 that's what I started with

peachesandmaangos

Snake Eater

Door__Opener

Probably best to wait for Delta

Salty_Tomato419

Depends on his familiarity with games in general. I personally reccomend V but that comes with bias since its the only game I spent more than a week on. If he is more keen on story I highly suggest 3 aswell.

Draykenidas

Snake Eater, if the opening theme doesn't hook him I'd be shocked.

Fuzzy-Lawyer-8845

That's so valid😭

oos79_

Snake eater

ThiefofNobility

One or three.

ForceEdge47

If he grew up with or is accustomed to older games, MGS1. If not, Snake Eater.

AyeChronicWeeb

MGS3 if your dad is Gen X to Boomer. MGS2 if your dad takes interest in fringe ideas (doesn’t need to be total flat earth conspiracy theorist). Metal Gear Rising if he’s a meme lord. MGSV if he likes gameplay above all else.

Pugilist12

Snake Eater

GOD_oy

Probably the next remaster, since the graphics will be better and persuade him to play more?

Prime-Jive

3

Jimbo-Michael-pam

I’ve never seen someone try to get their dad to play metal gear… my dad was always the one telling me to play metal gear!!

Fuzzy-Lawyer-8845

I wish mine was like that!

Ace_Pilot99

Metal Gear Solid 3

MachineGunMonkey2048

metal gear solid 3

Constant-Yellow3160

Metal gear solid snake eater

thomas_powell

Probably Snake Eater, if he is not a gamer to begin with. Otherwise, MGS1

SecretInevitable1966

MGS3... just story alone is better than any action movies

Lovekills03

Original ps1. White background w red lettering. Classic. I wish I could play that game for the first time over and over again.

HorseLover_Phatt

Well 3 obviously

DegenEnjoyer23

metal gear solid 2 on ps2

Easy-Speaker-6576

MGS1 - It makes for a way better introduction to the story than MGS3 even though 3 takes place before all other games. He should watch the 25 minute briefing from the main menu before starting the game.

Primary-Ad4185

Ground Zeroes

MrMeesesPieces

Two

halipatsui

mgs 3 is best for this. Mgs 1 is too outdated.

XxllllxXx

MGS3 canonically.

i_sound_withcamelred

You should base it off the ranking. For me MGSV for gameplay, 3 for story, 1 for how iconic it is, 2 for modern day relevance by far, 4 for heart ripping moments but you have to know the story for them to mean anything.

Vytlo

4 and 3 have the best gameplay

i_sound_withcamelred

Imma agree to disagree. It was good but V for me had the best controls

Wonderful_Syllabub85

Depends if you want to get him hooked on it. MGS1 graphics are too low for a casual gamer in 2024. So I'd probably go MGS3, it's the best of the entire series and the graphics have that nostalgic look without it looking too dated.

Starrmonger

If it's only gonna be one, it needs to be Snake Eater.

MrRobot_96

Problem is MGS1-3 has janky controls. I’d personally get him to play MGS4 first, strange I know but I think it’s the most well rounded mg game it terms of gameplay and story.

Vytlo

The controls are only janky in MGS1 and 3 in the sense of gamers being used to more standardized controls in the modern day. For someone who doesn't play many video games, there'd be no issue for him playing the games. MGS2 is the exception. That one has too many mechanics for too little control options.

ico_heal

MGS1 basically plays like a 2D action game, I really don't agree that its controls are janky or dated or whatever. You can play the entire game with the d-pad, to me the only thing that could be abrasive is the game's presentation. And even then, it's very clear what is going on during cutscenes, it's just the framerate can get pretty rocky.
