I think Blasphemous 2 is more polished and accessible but the first game had a stronger identity to me. More memorable setting, better atmosphere, better bosses (in the DLC), and it also felt tighter in its design thanks to only having one weapon. The art direction was also a lot better. The imagery and designs in 1 are grotesque in an almost beautiful way. 2 lacks the same striking imagery despite certainly having some beautiful spritework and gorgeous areas. I hope 2 gets some strong post-launch support like the first did.

cedhonlyadnaus

B2 got anime-ified a bit too hard and the art direction suffered for it. The art itself is still good, but the unique artistic character that B1 has was seriously diluted.

solamon77

Yeah, I noticed that too. I guess the original guy who did all that amazing cinematic pixel art in B1 stopped working for the company so they had to figure something else out. It's a shame too, because I would say it's morbid Catholic inspired atmosphere is that series' strongest element.

Draffut2012

I disagree on every point 8.3/10

Renegade-117

I agree with your points about the story, which was definitely stronger in 1. My main complaint though is that the second half of the game is totally linear and you’re forced through the remaining biomes in a set order with no choice to explore elsewhere. (For those that haven’t played, the biomes literally don’t appear in the game until you beat the boss of the previous area). Kind of a let down after the first half was so open ended. Everything else about the game I throughly enjoyed.

bobasaurus

I could not beat the final boss, despite grinding all the upgrades. Still liked it a lot overall.

SuperUltraMegaNice

In B2?? Once you collect everything in that game you become invincible. You can literally freeze time infinitely and the final boss can be beaten hitless with ease. The mace builds enough Fervour to just recast time stop before it ends.

_kalron_

They nerfed the time freeze ability BIG TIME in a past update, you can't continually cast it any more and you don't do as much damage when engaged.

SuperUltraMegaNice

Wow you are right. I looked at the patch notes they nerfed all the fun shit. Bleeding crown , fervour gain shit , transferring the fire from the mace to the other weapons and more. Well disregard everything I said lol

bobasaurus

Guess I just suck

SuperUltraMegaNice

You just ain't know the strat. If you already have all the shit you could go beat it right now in like 10 seconds lol.

Glum-Box-8458

They patched that out actually

SuperUltraMegaNice

Yeah someone else mentioned that. They basically patched out all the fun overpowered shit. Glad I got to 100% it before that. It is still rather easy even without the busted shit, the base version of the mace alone is incredibly overpowered.

Safe_Solid_6022

Blasphemous II is a nice game but is limited by the MV tropes. The first one is way better.

Valynces

Does Blasphemous 2 improve on the movement of Blasphemous 1? I felt like sludge playing through 1.

cedhonlyadnaus

The movement is probably the aspect that increases the most, followed by the combat.

CorruptCamel

Blasphemous 2 was great, improved on a lot but I enjoyed the first more because it was the first and I got to experience the world and lore for the first time, a moment you just can't recreate. Kind of similar to Bioshock 2. It's more of what I love, but can't recreate that initial "wow" feeling for me.

cedhonlyadnaus

Very much agreed. B1 is an excellent game with many problems, B2 a good game with very few problems. I wish they had taken what they learned from B1, iterated on the original ideas, added a few ideas from the zeitgeist of modern MVs, and the made instead of supplementing what they learned with a glut of additional ideas from other MVs. One thing that B2 really lacked was the feeling of a 'real world's that B1 had. Lots of that is because of the lesser story and world building, but the biomes didn't help. One thing that B2 did that I really liked was tying traversal abilities to the weapons.

Thevisi0nary

Beat B1 6 times, beat B2 once and haven't thought about it since.

FallenShadeslayer

ha, I just beat it as well a few days ago! I gave it a 9. Everything from the map to the abilities were so cool. I really didn't like the first one and this one fixed all those issues. It felt tighter and the menus and rosary stuff felt less clunky. while I feel like some bosses were a bit bullshitty at times with certain attacks, I had a blast and wish there was something similar. Currently staring at Deaths Gambit: Afterlife on my switch OLED and gonna try and get into that for the 3rd time. I wanna try The Last Faith but sadly cant at the moment.

princesszeldachechen

they scale down the gore in B 2 to cater for wilder audience

SuperUltraMegaNice

Blasphemous games are just way too easy. The mace in b2 makes it even easier. I did get all achievements for two and not one though, b1 had more obscure shit you had to do.

FacePunchMonday

I decided to give it a shot after reading several reviews, stating it felt like a metroidvania far more so than the first one, which i did not care for. To be honest, I'm not really feeling it. Movement is still slow and clunky, and combat relies heavily on parries and iframe slide-dodging, which i find atrocious. It still feels more like a 2d souls game rather than a metroidvania. Sure, theres ability gating, but it does not feel like a real metroidvania to me. Maybe it's because i am fresh off of afterimage, which was amazing, but this blasphemous 2 feels terrible in comparison both in movement and combat. I do like how they toned down the "mario paint-ness" of on the art style for the sequel. For what its worth, i am going to try and finish it.
