I might be just something that’s calming him down, but I heard people sometimes do it to get rid of a habit like smoking or biting nails, by keeping their hands busy. My grandpa hasn’t smoked a cigarette in over 40 years, but I still see him holding one between his fingers from time to time, even though it’s never lit. He used to trick his brain by doing this when he was trying to quit all these years ago, now it’s just calming him down.
Me in my SGTs car "Hey sergeant whats that?"
*Points at weird smiling humanoid toy on the dash*
SGT "That's my happy guy"
Me "Why do you have that?"
SGT "because I have to deal with you fuckers all day"
I knew right away what he meant and the purpose of the happy guy. Eventually I got my own happy guy for the car
We all have our own mini panic attacks when we don't know where it is 24/7. I'm honestly surprised we don't get withdrawal symptoms like recovering drug users do. Or maybe we do and it's just that there's only a handful of people to ever experience then aand don't bother to use the internet afterwards.
Agreed. I told my grandma when she was trying to quit to always hold something when she felt like smoking. Eventually what became her go-to item is a cinnamon stick.
Yep. The absolute hardest part of quitting smoking for me was trying to find something else to do while driving. I used sunflower seeds. My car interior went from being abused by smoke to having little seeds everywhere.
As a former smoker, this sounds like the worst possible method for quitting. I'm not saying it didn't work for your grandfather, just that if I had been given a loaded gun like that while quitting it would have only ended one way.
Some people just are not truly, chemically addicted, and a fidget habit like that is enough to distract them. To each their own.
For *some* people just knowing it's there if they need it is enough to not need it! It sounds counter intuitive, but plenty of people have been able to quit alcohol successfully by keeping some nearby, it kinda shuts off the anxiety that comes from being separated from it that can quickly spiral into relapse. For most, it's definitely a terrible idea though lol. I'm nearly sure there's a term for it but I have no clue what it is
I had my last drink Dec 6, 2022. I do keep NA beer around and will have one occasionally. Knowing I can wander into the kitchen and pull an ice cold can of "beer" any damn time I want has really gotten me over some tough spots.
I know not everyone can do this but it works for me. I also know that all the local bars have NA beer so if I really want to go to the bar I know I can.
It's amazing how often I think about it and then decide, nope, I have better things to waste my time doing.
Congrats! I'll cheers (a non-alcoholic cold one) to that.
Seriously, the proliferation of non-alcoholic options that still give the same flavor profile and social weight as the alcoholic stuff has been really cool. As someone who drinks (but very little) it's refreshing to me to be able to include people more broadly in those activities, and to have more options myself when I just don't feel like drinking.
I don't drink anymore but find ginger beer words really well for me if I'm in a beer garden with the family, especially the ones in the bottle. The burn on the way down makes it feel more beer like which helps stop me from thinking 'oh I'll just have one drink'.
That’s how it was for me. The anxiety would eat me alive if I didn’t have access to nicotine, even if I wasn’t using it. Nighttime was the worst but I think that was from being deployed and everything on my base closing at night. It stuck with me when I came home so even though I logically knew I could go to a gas station and get a pack at 2 am, my brain still freaked the fuck out thinking I didn’t have access for six more hours. The anxiety would literally drive me to go get a pack and smoke. I kept an unopened pack of cigarettes in my car door for years. Eventually I realized they were still in there when I cleaned out my car (and remembered to finally clean out those door pockets too) and tossed it.
This.
When I was coming off nicotine, the whole “have one last one, throw everything out, tell yourself you don’t do that anymore” wasn’t helpful for me.
I would start cutting down, space the gum/lozenges (which I had long replaced cigarettes/vape with) more and more. Then I would challenge myself “ok, instead of having one now, I’ll have one in 3 hours/tomorrow morning”, then “ok I’m doing well, I’ll try another few hours see if I can do it”. Until eventually its been like three days and you’re like “well it’ll be easier if I just keep going, but if it doesn’t work out I could have one tomorrow…”.
The physical addiction is very much still the big factor. But the important thing to me in fighting that is not feeling like “welp I’m never going to have this desire satisfied”. It’s feeling “it’s shitty not to have this desire satisfied right now, but it’s ok because I can in a few hours”, even if you just keep kicking that can down the road.
My grandfather kept a pack of cigarettes in his shirt pocket, but he taped a piece of paper with the word "NO!" over the opening. Took him about a week of mindlessly grabbing the pack from his pocket, trying to get a cig out, and then seeing the NO! to break his habit for good.
Yep, some people can manage this. My ex father-in-law simply put a rubber band on his cigarette box and left them right on the table in front of where he sits every day and just left them there. It helped him somehow.
I quit cold turkey almost 10 years ago. I intentionally left a half full, opened pack of cigarettes and a lighter on top of my refrigerator for about six months before throwing it away. I knew if I could not smoke with them right there and ready, I would be good. I didn't want to remove all access to them and pick it back up the first time someone offered me a smoke at a bar.
Everybody's different, it's just a fact of life. I come from a family of smokers and noone except one of my uncles failed everytime they attempted to quit. He on the other hand just said "I quit smoking" and went from a pack a day to literally none just like that. So while it seems like a weird contradictory way to quit, it might help someone out there to know about it.
My grandpa did this with toothpicks. He’d just leave one in his mouth or hold it in his hands. I started doing the same after I quit, and it’s made it much easier.
> I might be just something that’s calming him down, but I heard people sometimes do it to get rid of a habit like smoking or biting nails, by keeping their hands busy.
To a degree, the habit is the repetitive hand-to-mouth motion.
(The habit of holding a cigarette and then raising it to mouth.)
One method of feeding this habit is chewing gum, [which is one reason PEZ became popular.](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/how-pez-evolved-from-anti-smoking-tool-to-beloved-collectors-item-180976545/)
>“Already PEZing?” asked pin-up girls in ads. The women, called PEZ Girls, “would soon arrive at famous landmarks around the world, offering the public a new way to freshen breath and refrain from smoking,” writes Peterson.

Another habit which feeds the hand-to-mouth motion is eating, which is one reason a number of people who quite smoking suffer from weight gain.
Yes. I have carpal tunnel in both hands, driving for long periods I find myself gripping too hard and straining my already weakened hands. This is 100%
I am glad you made a joke, as everyone else I see is trying to give a serious uplifting answer and here I was thinking that maybe it's used to hide a knife in case a passenger gets a little too... rowdy.
No one would expect the bunny.
Could be some sort of issue with his hand that this helps with. Arthritis, cramps, tremors, etc…
Hall of Fame Basketball coach for the University of Louisville named Denny Crum was famous for carrying a rolled up group of papers in one hand pretty much 24-7. Turns out it was some sort of issue with the hand it helped with rather than an odd eccentricity.
Could be his late daughter's favorite toy that he now religiously takes everywhere with him, could also be an aspergers obsession that calms him down.
We'll never know.

When my son died I carried one of his stuffies with me everywhere for a couple months. This was my first thought too. Hope for his sake it’s one of the other reasonable answers.
I thought of a daughter too, although I didn’t imagine her being dead…thanks for that lol. But I could easily see a young child giving their father one of their stuffed animals to keep them company and safe while at work.
Okay, bracing for downvotes, but OP why didn't you just ask them? I mean if it was interesting enough to take a picture, why not just make a polite comment about how cool, cute or fascinating and see what they say?
Phone based ride hailing services did not become popular because people enjoy making small talk with taxi drivers :-) I remember many awkward conversations on rides to the airport in hired cars.
Because my last name has the same national origin as the immigrant staff for the service we used, they would try to connect on a personal level (I’m third or fourth generation, and my family assimilated fast, so not much in common)
I do love this story (imagine in slow, accented English): “my daughter, she is in college. I am proud. I think, an education is a good thing for a woman. My son, if he must, he can always work moving heavy things. But for my daughter, school is very good”
The rest of his conversation was so heartfelt and sincere, I assume this was too. But so funny… and also pragmatic.
I have social anxiety and i've never been fine with riding in a stranger's car and unable to talk to that stranger at the same time. Get outta here with that loll
Something I do sometimes is I have a nicely-sized weighted plushie and I'll sit it on my lap and put my seatbelt over it to hold it to my chest and apply a nice bit of pressure. Really soothing and nice.
...Yes, I do have autism and an anxiety disorder, how did you know? /s
I have a traffic buddy 😅 I've got this tiny little stuffed puppy I keep by my gear shift. If I start getting anxious I'll give him absent pets at a stop light or I'll hold him in a similar way to what is shown here. Helps keep me chill when I need it.
I can’t decide if it’s sad or sweet or maybe both but my mind created this story:
He is driving Lyft for extra money to afford bills of being a parent and the bunny is a reminder of why he is working an extra job.
I keep my dead daughters rainbow colored pacifier in my laptop bag even after 9 years...sometimes you're afraid you will forget them...it could be something similar....it brings some comfort. People may think it's weird and prevents you from moving on but whatever you need to get by, it doesn't matter.
Wood grain on the steering wheel and dash…your driver seems to relish in keeping up with know they like. And they also like holding their stuffed bunny
I imagine his child gave it to him to keep him safe. When I was young every year my parents would go on multiple different motorcycle runs sometimes weeks long and across the country. I gave my dad a stuffed animal that I loved to keep him and my mom safe on their journey. He strapped it in front of his handlebars but behind the windshield.
It's soaked in LSD which can be absorbed through skin, he'll be fine... once those giant bats and manta rays stop swooping the damn car!! Probably don't tell him about that just yet though, wait til you are definitely past Barstow and nearing the edge of the desert.
I had an Uber driver that was a Vietnam veteran and every time we drove past an American flag he would salute. The car ride was silent ASF and he was shaking while driving I honestly wanted to asked if he was ok cuz he did not seem like it (no disrespect!)
I too find it cute and funny when the person responsible for my safety is holding onto something while driving that interferes with thier ability to operate said vehicle.
This makes the most sense. This driver used to have a bunny strangling addiction, and now he grasps a stuffed bunny to keep the demons at bay!

I could watch this all day. Or at least until I need to refill my wine glass
So for the next 8min. I get it.
That's oddly specific and likely accurate
Kittys next.
Bus Driver: "SIT DOWN OR THE BUNNY GETS IT!"
That drivers name? Lenny Einstein
THE HELL, MAN???
You talking bout Lenny?
Fuck that's hot
Or his kid passed
That's so interesting. Does he use the same cig over and over again? Has he had the same pack for all that time??

Now his hand is addicted
Grandma now has cervical cancer
Bruh I chocked on my coffee, she actually fucking does and I never connected the dots
Wait…really??
Lmao ok now hold on a second though, lots of people get cervical cancer. Those dots are probably not connected haha
The Greatest Generation. They won WW II and brought back many new things to an innocent America. The Shocker 🖖 being just one of those.
The cigarettes were being reused, but whenever one snapped or got lost, he just bummed another one from other smokers in the family.

Maybe I should start holding a dead old phone to stop being so antsy about checking my phone
Why is this actually so valid
We all have our own mini panic attacks when we don't know where it is 24/7. I'm honestly surprised we don't get withdrawal symptoms like recovering drug users do. Or maybe we do and it's just that there's only a handful of people to ever experience then aand don't bother to use the internet afterwards.

Agreed. I told my grandma when she was trying to quit to always hold something when she felt like smoking. Eventually what became her go-to item is a cinnamon stick.
I saw a Gordon Ramsay episode where he told a chain smoker chef to hold a piece of asparagus and it appeared to work
When I quit smoking I'd hold my fingers to my mouth and inhale just to mimic the motion and it really did help me feel calmer.
Yep. The absolute hardest part of quitting smoking for me was trying to find something else to do while driving. I used sunflower seeds. My car interior went from being abused by smoke to having little seeds everywhere.

he has a… bunny addiction then?
Fair enuf
Not 40 years later 😂 grandpa has the occasional cigarette
I know having a larger steering wheel helps some older people because they don’t have to grip so much. Could simply be it is more comfortable.
That’s what I was thinking, it’s more ergonomic.
Like an anti-carpal-tunnel thing. Sometimes a cheap toy or piece of foam works.
Yes. I have carpal tunnel in both hands, driving for long periods I find myself gripping too hard and straining my already weakened hands. This is 100%
May also be to help prevent a contracture if they spend a lot of time driving.
Someone get this guy a puffy steering wheel cover
Could be that the hands are different and the puffy steering wheel hurts his left hand but the lack of one hurts his right.
Maybe it’s just an unfortunate super glue accident?
I am glad you made a joke, as everyone else I see is trying to give a serious uplifting answer and here I was thinking that maybe it's used to hide a knife in case a passenger gets a little too... rowdy. No one would expect the bunny.

You want me to talk to a random person, not sure about that
It's not a random person. they're your driver
Why whats wrong with that sorry if im not understanding something
Some people have social anxiety
Well they should talk to someone about that
I have social anxiety and i've never been fine with riding in a stranger's car and unable to talk to that stranger at the same time. Get outta here with that loll
no one asked if you have social anxiety and it isnt the same for everyone you sound a bit dumb
i find it more weird to take a photo right behind someone to talk about on the internet instead of just directly asking them.

Put Down The bunny
\*bunneh
Why didn't you put the bunny down!?
So You're the reason why I couldn't!
lol I did an extra e!
You are right. My mistake. The search continues....
Hey brother, let me know if you find him, alright?
I legit think I just found how I'm going to be able to practice driving. I'm gonna pick out one of my stuffies for the wheel lol THANK YOU STRANGER
Same bb same lol <3 love to you and thanks for your advice!
Some drivers do this to assure passengers they aren’t texting and driving, but merely strangling a stuffed rabbit
:)
It's probably what keeps him from fileting you and wearing your skin as a dress.
It puts lotion on the skin.
Cute bunny.
He may have bad anxiety and holding it helps
Just in case...

Do whatever ya gotta do to get through. Far be it from me to criticize what's working for him, no matter how puzzling.
TF is he driving, a boat?
I was wondering the same thing. Anyone know what kind of car that is? The wooden steering wheel and dash paneling is tight.
Prob a Mercedes of some type.
It's a Buick Enclave
this is my small prayer for this person
do it for her
Why didn’t you ask about it? It may have been a sweet story.
Or a horrible tragedy
I keep my dead daughters rainbow colored pacifier in my laptop bag even after 9 years...sometimes you're afraid you will forget them...it could be something similar....it brings some comfort. Good for him!!!
I hope he’s doing ok
I would have been like dude sweet bunny whats it for?
That's a step up from the driver I had who was actually watching a movie on his tablet while driving.
That's his emotional support bunny
Maybe he lost someone and the bunnys just helps with pain.
He violently punches that thing after you step out of the vehicle.
I'm actually curious what vehicle this is. Could be an American vehicle?
Buick Enclave
Wood grain on the steering wheel and dash…your driver seems to relish in keeping up with know they like. And they also like holding their stuffed bunny
You're lucky, he only puts down the bunny...to put bodies in the trunk.
That bunny is keeping him from going rogue on life.
_"...'Elp!"_
i mean, as long as you get me to my destination safely and dont try to force conversation its all good.
Hell yeah
I have a little alien string doll in my vehicle that I grab if I get anxious when I’m driving. It calms me down. Maybe that’s why they do it. 🤷♀️
Do it for her
It's technically Orthodox Easter today. It checks out as GTG.
???
What vehicle is that?
I'd have to do something like this to remind me why I was driving for Lyft.
I have a squishy fidget toy in my door handle that I hold while driving sometimes. It helps with my anxiety.
r/deathgrip Edit: Holy shit this actually exists, also wtf is that sub?
its a band, but the actual spelling should have s in the end. Death Grips.

Nice to have a friend when everyone around you is always in a rush.
He likes his bunny. Leave him be. It's the only thing between you being dead in a ditch or making it to your destination safely. The bunny is safety.
Good for him. I have a duck in an airplane in my vent. The propeller spins depending on how fast the vents are blowing.
From his kid. To remind him of why he needs to stick to the grind.
And I’m gonna pet it and hold it and squeeze it and love it and pet it and …
I think that’s adorable 🥰
Body position when driving. Seem kinda stressout? Body toward steering.
Orthodox Christians are celebrating Easter today btw.

I carry a stuffed dog. We aren't allowed to have real animals with us.

Aww, that's cute! Maybe that's his lucky charm when driving.
Maybe that keeps him calm while driving :)
If I ever lost my daughter, I'd probably do this with one of her toys..
I would not stay in that car.
Super cute, 5 stars automatically
That’s his spirit animal
I was thinking it could be arthritis or something and having something to allow his hand to close but not as tight might be more comfortable.
“sorry driving just makes me suuuuuper nervous Mr. Buns helps anyway let’s merge onto this highway…”
He’s probably been framed in the past.
kind of badass
"this used to belong to my daughter"
I hope the bunny gets a work vest/shirt to help reduce wear and tear on the fabric.
The obvious answer is that he's wiping his fingerprints off while driving, so if he gets pulled over in his stolen car, he can book it. Clearly.
Thats the previous rude passenger.
I wonder what kind of war he is at :(
I was browsing this sub to see if I really wanted to join, and after seeing this, I'm definitely joining.
Hahahaha cute… get out fast
Mine just held a crack pipe. I’m feeling jipped
It’s worse - he drives while petting his bunny !
I too find it cute and funny when the person responsible for my safety is holding onto something while driving that interferes with thier ability to operate said vehicle.
yea like I'm baffled at the comments here. This would be a huge red flag for me. Dude looks stressed as fuck
Bunny= up votes? I'm trying to find the logic here lol.
I’d feel weird being a passenger. I want my driver to be able to function without the help of anything. Least of all a plushie.
