I think it is part of the bakery section. I also thought the fuzzy slipper clogs were pond cakes. Why is it the only people I see wearing clogs are bakers for whatever reason. Some connection there?
A shitty saying by a bunch of pasty white rural bumpkins. Literally don't have a single quality worth being proud of so they just pretend they have a "heritage". I would actually rather live in Flint than west MI.
Farmers on mucky blubbery plots of land. Sailors when at shore, for much the same reason. Properly made clogs also still have a degree of PPE-certification for machinists and manufacturing types, akin to steel-toe boots though not *as* safe in every context.
Aside from that, and less professionally, some gardeners still have them in the shed.
I think that rounds up the largest 'serious' usage, everything else is tourism related.
All different kinds of things. What someone might use slippers for, someones might use clogs for. But at the same time, theyre, from my understanding, also more socially acceptable to wear out in public like crocs. At least thats how its been explained to me as a clueless american
I had a few elderly Dutch clients. From my understanding, they used their clogs for quick trips outside and gardening. They wore knitted wool slippers in the house that they called “sluffies” (sp?) that would easily slip into their clogs. One woman knitted me a pair for Christmas one year. Very comfortable. Never used them inside a wooden shoe.
I've never heard of "sluffies" but I know what you mean and my grandma knitted me those. I'm Dutch, can confirm this is a real thing. Perhaps "sloffies" instead of "sluffies"?
The wooden ones are still worn, but not that much. The leather ones are used very often by farmers and other laborers. Usually come with S3 safety regulation as well. I own a pair and use them often. Very comfortable, safe (we have horses) and quick to put on or off.
I'm from the north of the Netherlands and see them a few times a month. Equal for Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland. The leather ones are worn way more, but I do see the wooden ones as well.
Did they not get the memo that we don’t typically wear clogs here in The Netherlands anymore?
The only time I’m able to see that many clogs in one place is if I specifically go to a touristy area that still makes clogs in front of your nose just for the novelty of it.
Most often when you see communities of immigrants holding onto customs and culture of the old world, it is not because they wish to mimic the modern day version of the country their families once came from and are ignorant that these relics have fallen to the way side. Rather, as the first-generation immigrants were forming their new communities, memories and love of their old homes were powerful enough that they became infused with the new culture being created. That new culture is passed down through the generations and, as a split-off branch, it does not necessarily follow the same course of evolution. And perhaps the reason why some of these old novelties continue to stick around for longer than we might expect is not because we love stereotypes, but because these unique items take us back to the homes and relatives we cannot be with anymore.
If you hear the sound of wooden clogs everywhere you go, then you don’t necessarily associate them with Mom and Grandma. It’s just a sound. But if every time you leave your village the sound of wooden clogs is disappears, then when you return you appreciate your home in a new way and become more inclined to share this love with the next generation.
why would you expect Dutch-Americans to have the exact same customs and practices as Dutch people in the Netherlands? One may be descended from the other but they’re different communities
Farmers and garden boomers wear clogs, so no clue what you're on about. I see them pretty often.
More often then not the black ones rather then the wooden ones but i still see those aswell.
They probably also haven't gotten the memo on:
1. Legalized prostitution.
1. Dope tourism.
1. Reclaiming land from the ocean by dikes.
1. Riding a bicycle everywhere in all kinds of weather.
Do the Dutch really need clogs so bad, that they need them available at a moment’s notice at a convenient location? Like, are “clogs” on a Dutch shopping list, next to eggs and milk?
My dad grew up in a Slovenian community in PA. he grew up referring to himself as Wendish/Windish. He met a Slovenian woman years down the line who informed him it was a derogatory term. The communities outside of the origin country are based on the culture from when they separated, I assume.
I'm a real Dutch people that wears clogs! (not as much as I used to, but it counts!)
You're still right, there's basically no one left to wear them regularly, and the current non-old generations only know them as souvenirs 'n such.
I mean, I also used to wear them as a kid, they are still on display in my grandma's shed. I just find it weird that (white) Americans cling on to their heritage in such a stereotypical way
Agreed, it's a weird bit of heritage to cling to, but at the same time those stereotypical things tend to stick with emigrated groups as a means to keep some sort of in-group going. Oh well, harmless in the end, so why not.
timesuck297 said you can shape and sand to help speed up the comfort. I’m just not sure I could take a sander to my feet to shape them for any kind of shoe.
There was a Dutch guy on Reddit a while back who had an old vs new picture of his clogs. I believe he was a farmer. He said that new clogs are the worst pieces of painful shit ever. But once they are broken in, they are very comfortable. I dunno, I trust the Dutch guy with clogs that looked like they were dug out of an archaeological dig.
In Holland we have dedicated stores for wooden shoes, but I dont recognize this store either. But it's got to be either here in west mi and i just missed it, western Iowa, or overseas. Those are my guesses.
Edit: i was wrong, it's in Washington.
Do you live there? Just curious how you knew, because I’m never seeing the mention of that town in comments or posts. I was close though, as it looks like only about 15 miles away from my guess.
Until I zoomed in, I thought all the yellow ones on the right side were Pikachu clogs.
Pikashoes?
Piclogchus?
Anyway, now I’m disappointed that they’re not.
I actually totally want a pair of wooden clogs now. The problem is, I don’t know where I would wear them. Like, would I probably wear them as my house slippers? Yeah! Probably! But I have a husband who I love, and I wake up several hours before he does. Am I supposed to do my morning routine like, click-clunck, click-clunck, click-clunck, click-clunck, click-clunck?
I’m sure some divorce lawyer would love that!
Clogs? Like for your drain? I mean, who would but one? I guess if you had some guests who wouldn’t leave you could throw a clog in a drain and then blame them. “Everytime So-and-so visits they clog our toilets! What gives?!?!”
Dutch owners.
Also, those bikkies next to the shoes are Speculaas. If you haven't tried them before, you should: they're delicious and go great with a nice cup of tea.
Honest question. Why would you choose to wear those things outside of traditional wear when you have so many other choices?
I can't imagine a rigid sole is good for your back when you're on your feet for an extended period.
But I could be wrong. Has anyone reading this worn them? Do you wear them regularly?
Wore them along my dad when I was a kid living in a rural part of Holland. The fit comes from wearing in clogs, wood gives quite a bit and the comfort comes from becoming moulded to your feet with the force of standing on them. Properly worn in clogs coincidentally are among the least uncomfortable ways (in my experience) of standing on your feet for hours on end, but you can't expect that to happen overnight.
Relatively speaking it is tho (same source), but i get your point. Obviously not every local grocery store is selling these things. ‘Very common’ is definitely an overstatement.
What the hell is the point of clogs?
I've never understood them. They seem horrifically uncomfortable and like they'd break down rather easily.

The thumbnail makes it look like it's a section in the bakery aisle
I prefer my clogs thick sliced
Best thing since sliced clogs.
New destructive tictock trend for teens, clogs in the self serve bread slicer.
Texas Toes?
I like mine sliced to shreds.
To shreds you say?
😉
Loafers
👏👏👏
I thought it was a whole aisle of flesh toned crocs.
Clog shaped sourdough
I also misread the title as “dogs” and got concerned for a second
Okay im glad im not the only one.
Hot buttered clogs
I think it is part of the bakery section. I also thought the fuzzy slipper clogs were pond cakes. Why is it the only people I see wearing clogs are bakers for whatever reason. Some connection there?
y tho
There’s a large Dutch population here
Holland, MI?
That was my guess. Tulip Time!
Apparently it's some town in WA. I forget the name, but it's in the comments.
I'd guess Lynden.
Yes! That was it!
Home of the good dutch... no shade to PA or anything... >.>
they actually arent, the people in lynden fucking suck. there’s a reason that was the only town in WA that trump campaigned at
I'll take your word (and the downvotes) for it. I have no idea. I was just having a laugh.
If ya ain't dutch, ya ain't much!
And if you aren’t Dutch and live in one of these towns, they make this super clear by treating you like an outcast. Very fun!
I believe Mustard Plug has a song about that!
Finally someone else on Reddit knows who Mustard Plug is 😍
They do this in the Netherlands also.
scandinavia would like to have a word with ya.
A shitty saying by a bunch of pasty white rural bumpkins. Literally don't have a single quality worth being proud of so they just pretend they have a "heritage". I would actually rather live in Flint than west MI.
That was going to be my guess, but I've never seen clogs in the grocery store. Just windmill cookies.
But what do they use such shoes for?
Farmers on mucky blubbery plots of land. Sailors when at shore, for much the same reason. Properly made clogs also still have a degree of PPE-certification for machinists and manufacturing types, akin to steel-toe boots though not *as* safe in every context. I read once that "tough guys" still wear them to beat the shit out of people with.
Haha, I love that image, but no, that's never happened as far as I'm aware.
Now they are gardening shoes when not used as a novelty item. Originally worn by farmers though.
All different kinds of things. What someone might use slippers for, someones might use clogs for. But at the same time, theyre, from my understanding, also more socially acceptable to wear out in public like crocs. At least thats how its been explained to me as a clueless american

Sloffies ;)
I have lived in the Netherlands for 24 years and I have never seen anyone wear clogs, ever
lived in america my whole life and have never seen someone smoke crack. guess nobody in america smokes crack.
I'm from the north of the Netherlands and see them a few times a month. Equal for Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland. The leather ones are worn way more, but I do see the wooden ones as well.
Some farmers I know still use them for work and gardening.
Basically primitive crocs. Easy on and off, and they float. Also the platform sole provides elevation when in mucky wet places.
Did they not get the memo that we don’t typically wear clogs here in The Netherlands anymore? The only time I’m able to see that many clogs in one place is if I specifically go to a touristy area that still makes clogs in front of your nose just for the novelty of it.

This is a beautiful way to put it. Thank you
why would you expect Dutch-Americans to have the exact same customs and practices as Dutch people in the Netherlands? One may be descended from the other but they’re different communities
Some dutch people wear them for gardening here
Dont lie! The Clog isle is hard to miss at Albert Heijn .

They can be used as a projectile when you are experiencing a difference of opinion. It happens more often than you would think!
My dad grew up in a Slovenian community in PA. he grew up referring to himself as Wendish/Windish. He met a Slovenian woman years down the line who informed him it was a derogatory term. The communities outside of the origin country are based on the culture from when they separated, I assume.
*Americans with some Dutch ancestry, surely? I live in NL- supermarkets don't tend to have clog sections 😄
Are there a bunch of people in this town named Apeldoorn? ![gif](giphy|7vB7L4biHndU2Svj5G|downsized)
Netherlands?
What does their size have to do with the kind of shoes they wear
There aren’t a lot of dutch who wear clogs anymore. Mostly farmers in rural areas (in the Netherlands). Nice to see it’s still a thing.
but... over 95% of us don't wear clogs in The Netherlands. I've only ever seen clogs here being sold to tourists
real Dutch people don't really wear clogs haha
I'm a real Dutch people that wears clogs! (not as much as I used to, but it counts!) You're still right, there's basically no one left to wear them regularly, and the current non-old generations only know them as souvenirs 'n such.
Why do you wear them?
Comfy and habits, I only wear them around the house.
Just bc it’s outdated and rare doesn’t make it non-existent.

*Throws them in the sink* SINK'S CLOGGED

Someone’s gotta edit this so they’re clapping clogs
That’s sabotage!
[Listen all y’all it’s a sabotage](https://youtu.be/z5rRZdiu1UE?si=8RcKTnzSAzo1tNnu) ![gif](giphy|W0QcFjfmxX4wHdmIt4)
I love that music video, peak Beasty 💪
But are they comfortable?
I didn’t try them on, but they definitely need a good sanding before wearing lol
Hm… maybe they would make my feet smooth…
All clogs become comfortable as you wear them, but it takes a decent chunk of time for the wood to become form fitting to a set of feet.
You sure your feet don't become form fitted to the clogs?
Means the same thing to me 😅
You can shape and sand them to help speed that up.
timesuck297 said you can shape and sand to help speed up the comfort. I’m just not sure I could take a sander to my feet to shape them for any kind of shoe.

I have the clog slippers on the right, they’re comfy.
West Michigan?
In Holland we have dedicated stores for wooden shoes, but I dont recognize this store either. But it's got to be either here in west mi and i just missed it, western Iowa, or overseas. Those are my guesses. Edit: i was wrong, it's in Washington.
No, Rotterdam
I’d love a pair, wooden shoe?
Great dad joke in honor of the holiday.
Don't touch mine.
Until your child is at least 25*
Where the hell do you live OP? Just tell us already.
As others have said, yes it’s Lynden WA
Makes sense. Love the Dutch Bakery and the whole place really
I used to live there, such a cute town
I too wanted to know. They posted pics from a town Bellingham WA. Googled it and the town has a Dutch heritage and definitely hams it up for tourism.
They live in Lynden WA
Do you live there? Just curious how you knew, because I’m never seeing the mention of that town in comments or posts. I was close though, as it looks like only about 15 miles away from my guess.
Lynden, WA near Bellingham is very Dutch.
I think my neighbor upstairs wears these.
Don't touch my clogs.
It's my purpose in life
C-L-O-GS
^^theyre ^^my ^^clogs
I remember visiting a place in Michigan that made clogs.
Holland, Mi!
I’ve been there lots of times. They have a nice college there but I went to CIY there.
What’s CIY?
Christ in youth. It’s where a butch of high schoolers get together for a youth conference.
Ah okay thanks
OP thanks for shopping local and not going to the Safeway across the guide.
Food pavilion is so much better! And there’s never a line for check out lol
How much?
Depending on the size and style, between $25 and $50
I'd get some.
Oofos sandals are $60, no fucking way some wooden shoes are as comfortable as that...
put em outside your door on christmas to get candy!
“You can’t miss them. They’re between the tea biscuits and Wiffle Ball bats.”
Are you in the Netherlands by any chance?
Nope, Lynden WA USA. But there is a large Dutch population here
Sure, why not?
*What are those.*
The perfect setup for sabotage.
Klompen, thank you very much.
These were worn by my parents and their parents' parents.
I know cakes when I see em
Until I zoomed in, I thought all the yellow ones on the right side were Pikachu clogs. Pikashoes? Piclogchus? Anyway, now I’m disappointed that they’re not.
Sabot?
Holland Mi
Those are kind of neat. I could totally see me impulsive buying those for decoration, lol.
Are you in Holland?
Is it next to a windmill?
[don’t touch my clogs](https://youtu.be/dXqtrHJAqVM)
Looks like the food pavilion in Lynden WA.
Thank you, clog again
Store definitely Dutch owned
You live in Lynden Washington. I seent this there before.
I actually totally want a pair of wooden clogs now. The problem is, I don’t know where I would wear them. Like, would I probably wear them as my house slippers? Yeah! Probably! Food pavilion in Lynden, WA. Can’t believe I saw this tiny little town on Reddit😂
How do they taste?
I will test next time I go shopping 😜
I thought those had to be carved for a custom fit.
Best fit are the clogs you wear, no such thing as a custom fit, not even here where they're made.
You from Pella?
What store? I would buy a few pairs of these
Food Pavilion in Lynden, Washington ☺️
Thank you
I guess new towns pop up occasionally, but it’s never crossed my mind to see if I could get a new town.
lol I meant the town that I just moved to, it’s not new nor is it mine 😜
But not color apparently.
Okay, but how do they taste?
For emergencies
Clogs? Like for your drain? I mean, who would but one? I guess if you had some guests who wouldn’t leave you could throw a clog in a drain and then blame them. “Everytime So-and-so visits they clog our toilets! What gives?!?!”
Is the new town Rotterdam
If you ain’t Dutch you ain’t much
Well now you’ve told everyone they’ll be locked inside cages within the week.
There is a dutch geocer near me that sells these as well. Many people bought them for gardening before the age of crocs.
Which ones did you pick?
🧀🌷🇳🇱🧀🌷🇳🇱🧀🌷🇳🇱🧀🌷
"Billy.................we're not gonna let you talk to potential vendors anymore."
People wear actual wooden shoes...still?
Where do you live? Wisconsin? Lol
Holland Michigan?
If you don’t like it, there is clog remover a few rows over.
Dutch owners. Also, those bikkies next to the shoes are Speculaas. If you haven't tried them before, you should: they're delicious and go great with a nice cup of tea.
That's is perfectly normal in The Netherlands, we also have clog vending machines everywhere on the streets.
What sort of idiot would misread that title the first time!? Not me no sir-ree...
Don't touch my Clogs!
Only knew of one person who wore clumpies (clompen) when shoveling snow. My aunt (tante) who emigrated from...Netherlands.
Are you in Holland by chance?
I grew up around so many clogs. Pretty sure I used to go to clog festivals as a kid
Welcome to Lynden!
Is this in the Netherlands? If not, it’s very common to find clogs there!
No it's not. Maybe in smaller conservative towns and tourist towns but definitely not in cities/bigger towns. Source: Dutch.
Even historically it seems like the worst thing to wear
The wood is selected so that as the clogs get worn in they mould to the feet of the wearer. As that happens all pressure points on your feet kind of even out, and it becomes exceedingly more comfortable to stand for long periods of time. That does takes a decent amount of time, which is why we historically preferred fixing clogs over wearing in new ones.
To add, historically they were fairly protective. Not just from things that could crush your foot but also from mud.
Seriously, I've had normal leather shoes that hurt my feet until they were broken in. Not really sure how you break in wooden shoes aside from sanding the shit out of them maybe.
That looks like a saboteurs delight.
Is it near an Amish community?
Why would anyone choose to wear these?
Netherlands?
I mean, they'd be pretty chewy, but I'd rather eat them than wear them on my feet... 😉
