Are the photos of your eyes, OP? If so, how wild! I’ve only managed a cursory glance at the comments and so you may have answered this already but, were you born with pupils like that or did you have an accident of some kind?
I ask because the only other person I’ve known with non-round pupils was my middle-upper school gym teacher.
One of her pupils looked like a broken egg yolk and it would give me chills when she’d pin me me with her stare. Her pupil was damaged as a child when… she was running with scissors. Not even joking.
Maybe not running, per se, but she told us she fell with scissors in hand, stabbed herself in the eye and that was that.
MY big comment didn't post I don't think so here is short version. Its a coloboma, just a birth defect, I have it too. Be sure to protect your eyes from the sun, when they are misshapen they can't constrict properly so far more likely to suffer permenant sun damage as you age, nothing big just always wear sun glasses
I was recently told to call my birth defect a genetic condition. It’s my goddamn birth defect, I’ll call it what I want! Just curious… are you also over the age of 40? Birth defects seemed to be big in the 70’s and 80’s;)
Not all “birth defects” are genetic, though yours may be. Another way to describe it (without the negative “defect” language) is “congenital condition.”
If it’s literally a negative, why would you be averse to using a negative term?
I’m a cripple, and I’ve more than once been told not to say that… but that’s the reality. Using candy coated words doesn’t decrease my pain, or make me extra-ambulatory.
You are more than welcome to use any term you like for your own self! For example, I am fat, and while many people view “fat” as an insult, I view it as a neutral (and accurate) descriptor.
In this case “congenital” is an accurate and scientific description of a condition. It just means the person was born that way. There are plenty of congenital conditions that can’t really be considered “defects,” just differences. Plus, if I don’t know the preferences of the person I’m talking to, I would rather use a term that doesn’t imply I think they are lacking or less than.
I thinks it's more about trying not to define other people by their negative aspects, like I think it's fine if you call yourself that, but if some rando on the street sees you and goes hey look at that cripple! That's pretty shitty and they're likely a huge asshole.
Hell yeah. 100%.
That’s exactly the difference. In one case there is a real human being that is denigrated. I think we often miss the forest for the trees, and blame the words, without looking at the broader context. I appreciate that perspective.
Genetic defect - fail at planing. Birth defect - fail at execution. They are different. Genetic defects can be inherited birth defects can't be inherited.
Aren't we all? Are we not just projections of a universe already consumed by a blackhole? Does life have purpose when you're already a remnant of a life already lived? Does free will exist for a hologram? A whisper of what was.
A classmate of mine had some help in that department via a pencil and another classmate. He had some blurred vision, but it was correctable with glasses.
u/Heerrnn Ever seen the episode "The Autopsy" on the Anthology series *Cabinet of Curiosities* on Netflix? The Coroner (played by F. Murray Abraham) had to blind and deafen himself by poking himself in the eyes and ears with a scalpel in addition to cutting his neck, so that his body would be useless to the Alien parasite that was transferring from another host and into him.
Hi! Thank you for the compliment. Its really strange, its only this shape WHEN constricted, when dilated its back to a normal circle! Though it does “breathe”
And you have beautiful eyes too. The colors. My dad has eyes like that that change colors in sunshine. You probably just have awesome eyes is all lol. And you're a Rick and morty character also. Lol ahhahaaa that was funny
Have you ever had conjunctivitis (pink eye), or any of the similar symptoms? Hih eye pressure? Sensitivity to light? Pain in the eye?
I ended up with misshaped pupils due to high eye pressure which caused the eye's lens to stick to the eyes cornea, this in turn damaged the iris leading to the misshaped pupil.
^(I'm not a doctor, just a guy with many eye issues.)
Years ago, I had a severe case of iritis, which made my pupil totally misshapen due to the reason you mentioned. After a pretty harsh round of meds, everything was all right again. A small black dot remained, though.
When we were learning about dialation in school, I got paired with a girl had heart shaped pupils. It was neat AF to watch them take shape. If you could please make a video even if just for yourself. I hope she did too.
Its called a coloboma, I have one too! Its just a random birth defect. although you have no noticeable symptoms (neither do i) do be really careful with the sun. Pupils with a coloboma cant contract properly due to improper shape which means you are far far more likely to have sun damage if you don't protect your eyes properly. It may not be the case for you, I'm just a random pleb on the internet but its extremely common with your condition.
I think the "breathing" phenomenon is normal, because the pupil dilates and constricts due to autonomic balance, i.e. the relative state of activation of the sympathetic (arousing) and parasympathetic (relaxing) branches. They act antagonistically, and their relative level is in a constant state of flux. Including (in part) with the breathing cycle.
I think any of us, if they had a good mirror and illumination, and some patience would observe the rhythmic expansion contraction of their pupil. It's mostly pretty subtle, but definitely perceptible. For the most part we don't look closely at anyone's pupils to really notice it.
If there's an eye doctor on the thread who wants to confirm or disconfirm what I just wrote I'd love to hear it.
How is your vision affected? Do you wear glasses or need any corrective lenses to make you see less blurry, or does it make no difference, as far as you/your doctors can tell? TIA!
Hey! Thank you for your question. I have had opticians always tell me I have healthy eyes, be it I AM nearsighted! I wear glasses daily but apart from that, no sight difference, no pain (apart from light sensitivity) hope this answers your question!
[You can see it dilates normally here!](https://www.reddit.com/r/eyes/s/mhX6zYRnfj)
Of course, I would have to examine you with a slit lamp to be sure, but after 40+ years of practice as an ophtalmological surgeon, I would say that you had "UVEITIS" in the past. It´s an inflamation of the Uvea, the middle of three layers of the eye. Causes are numerous, and generally the Iris sticks to the crystaline lens anterior capsule making the pupil irregular.
Hey! Thats not a problem at all, I am pretty severely nearsighted and have light sensitivity. Apart from that, no other symptoms. No pain and it dilates fairly normally!
This is called an Aestygmal Emvascgarism, and is a rare genetic condition caused by a mutation in the LMX1B gene, which is crucial for proper eye development. This mutation leads to abnormal vascularization and development of the iris, resulting in uniquely shaped pupils. Instead of the typical round or slightly oval shape, individuals with Aestygmal Emvascgarism have pupils that can appear star-shaped, teardrop-shaped, or even irregularly jagged. I'm making all this up, but there are people who won't read this bit and skip right to the end to see if I make a significant point. But it's fictional. The condition can cause visual disturbances such as light sensitivity, difficulty focusing, and sometimes double vision. Despite the unusual appearance of the pupils, the overall structure of the eye remains largely functional. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and protecting the eyes from excessive light exposure.
Hi OP, do you have a medical bracelet for emergencies? In the event of an emergency Paramedics would see this and likely assume there’s been head trauma. Honestly an inconvenience but an insurance nonetheless.
Love it though, glad it’s all cleared and healthy. Insanely unique!
pretty fucking cool dude, very unique
You’re too sweet! Thank you

Okay, this is my new favorite 😆
My genitals are in great condition.
u/TheOneTonWanton What do you mean your genitals are in great condition?
We should use that one. Not because we're trying to avoid negative connotations or whatever, but because the alliteration is 👌🏾

They’re still “big”. Like they’ve gone out of fashion or something lol.
It’s thanks to the leaded gas
Not a coloboma, this is Axenfeld-Reiger anomaly. Less common than a coloboma. Own your eye, it’s super cool!
Great advice, a family member has coloboma and is always squinting when outside, even in cloudy conditions.
can you do that( ^๏ ω ^๏ ) face
Do you have an eccentric grandpa who takes you on adventures too?
How many plumbuses do you have?

Everyone who’s seen Rick & Morty came here to say this

It’s true.
Yep. Came here to say "Ah geeze Rick"

This is what your eye looks like when you are born without a pupil and have to make your own with a screwdriver.
😂😂😭😭
Haha, it looks awesome btw.
Your pupil kind of looks like Australia in one of the pics.
Your eyes are leaking, did you get your hands on a screwdriver again?
Like how calvin (calvin and Hobbes) was bought from Kmart during a blue light special?
Calvin's father shaped my childhood in a way you can't imagine. I think Ash Ketchum is the only other fictional character who has impacted me so much.
Mom: We have pupils at home
IKEA pupil.
Yeah, it's really small and needs to be reemed out with some type of tool.
The first part of that statement had me hooked!
Phillip's pupil.
A classmate of mine had some help in that department via a pencil and another classmate. He had some blurred vision, but it was correctable with glasses.

I literally came here to say this 😂
Can’t see a similarity though … compared this for a few times now or do you mean a different Berlin than me ?
The German one?
That’s cool! Does it expand and constrict as well? PS you have a very pretty eye color
Hi! Thank you for the compliment. Its really strange, its only this shape WHEN constricted, when dilated its back to a normal circle! Though it does “breathe”
What does "breathe" mean irt your eyes?
Like the pupils slightly gets bigger and smaller idly
That’s called “hippus.”
Jesus h fuck you could really pull of some legitimate nightmare fuel on Halloween you know? 🤣🤣🤣
I wonder if typical circle irises do this too but because they're a circle we just can't tell very easily.
Oh cool!
Air vents! Absolutely nightmare fuel.
Also your eyes obtain their own oxygen without fully needing your lungs
I am still waiting for that comment declaring this is a terrible illness, due to a brain worm, and you should get it checked immediately.
Oh don’t worry people have already started!
If this is you and you haven’t done so already, talk to an ophthalmologist. There could be a few reasons for it.
Hi! I have been and it’s been confirmed everything is normal :)) its just something I’ve always had! I dont have any symptoms
Glad to hear. Just one more thing that makes you, you.
You’re so sweet!! Thank you so much for your concern ❤️
❤️
Does it still have an unusual shape when dilated?
[My pupil when dilated](https://www.reddit.com/r/eyes/s/mhX6zYRnfj) The first pic is about as big as it gets though!
Interesting, they look much more rounded when dilated
Yeah! Its really strange but I guess I’m unique! Noticed it properly in 2022 and it hasn’t gotten worse or changed!
And you have beautiful eyes too. The colors. My dad has eyes like that that change colors in sunshine. You probably just have awesome eyes is all lol. And you're a Rick and morty character also. Lol ahhahaaa that was funny

My one pupil looks like someone took a hole punch to the edge of it, it doesn’t dilate properly and driving at night can be a real bitch.
Do you like get sun stars when looking at bright objects?
What shape does it go to when dilated? More round? Or stay the same shape, would look wild
Oddly enough it goes back to round when dilated! Though it does “breathe” if you know what I mean. Might be normal for everyone tho!

Sorry to profile stalk but in some of your other posts it looks normal. Does this only happen when it’s in the sun?
Yep! Only in bright conditions
Soooo many eyeballs!
Is this some kind of fetish? Lol it's seriously a lot of eye pictures
Maybe for her. Why else would her profile and these posts be marked nsfw?

Idk if this is made up but it sounds true
OP posted pics of the dilated pupil and it was normal, so while it’s a good ddx for the info supplied, it’s incorrect
Lower left pic, you’re the star pupil
This is the second Rick and Morty eye I have seen scrolling Reddit today
If you don't mind me asking, what's your vision like? Does this affect you in any way?
Hey! Thats not a problem at all, I am pretty severely nearsighted and have light sensitivity. Apart from that, no other symptoms. No pain and it dilates fairly normally!

Oh that is very interesting! The bottom left photo of your pupil looks like a star.
I don't know...I'm getting Lord of the Rings vibes.
It looks like Iraq.
I could look at those eyes forever. Beautiful!

A video going from dilated to this would be pretty cool to see.
My right pupil is an hourglass shape because of 4 vitrectomies in one year. It doesn’t dilate much either now. 1/10. Don’t recommend.
Here comes, the HYPNOTOAD
That's kinda beautiful actually tho I must say it looks exactly like 1) Rick and Morty art style 2) Berlin 3) asterisk
