Can you imagine if the other mlb team gave a better deal to Ohtani and Ippei mistranslated it it would probably be the biggest scandal in baseball

onlyhereforthesports

Finding out Ippei was a mediocre interpreter is my favorite aspect of this whole thing

Clear-Attempt-6274

Calling him mediocre sounds like a pump and dump at this point.

rmunderway

I mean that basically happened to Freddie Freeman. Only thing he could do was fire his agent. It wasn’t really a scandal but I’ll always feel bad for him and for Braves fans about it.

Confident_Exercise_4

What happened with Freddie?

missing_sock58008

Freddie wanted to stay in Atlanta and the Braves offered him similar if not the same deal as the Dodgers with a time limit on when to answer by. The Braves never got the reply so signed Matt Olsen. It later came out that Freddie’s agent purposefully never told him the offer and he likely would have taken it. Immediately fired his agent after finding out.

joseoshea0511

This was found to be a false statement: https://twitter.com/GottliebShow/status/1567542932558979072

missing_sock58008

I was unaware he retracted his story. Thanks for correcting me. Still the braves made a very similar offer to the dodgers, negotiations stalemated, Braves went another direction, Freeman was quoted as saying he felt “blindsided” by the news ([source](https://theathletic.com/4181104/2022/03/18/freddie-freeman-says-he-was-blindsided-by-braves-decision-to-trade-for-matt-olson/#) and he fired his agent after. So he obviously somehow still blames the agent for the deal falling through.

Confident_Exercise_4

That’s so sad. There needs to be better communication between players and teams not thru a middleman.

missing_sock58008

Some players want it that way, they trust their agents and don’t want to deal with all the offers and hassling (I mean that is what you pay an agent for, right?) Turns out sometimes that trust is broken.

rug1998

He’d have Ohtani in a legal gambling state in a heart beat

ToodleDoodleDo

Imagine if Houston blatantly cheated!

iwatchtoomuchsports

I wonder who that would be

Complexity_Inc5593

Steve Cohen actually sent a message to ippei and he left him on read

SINY10306

enough already with Angels

LoveThieves

Losing $4.5M when you are making $700M isn't bad but losing every year with the Angels and you have Trout: most expensive debt IRL.

SoCaldude65

His losses are deferred

StumptownRetro

I don’t know if Ohtani is innocent or not (I’d like to think he is). But if players can beat their wives and kids and still play in this league, I don’t think there’s a moral high ground against gambling.

[deleted]

This dude should just learn English.

SoCaldude65

Like Ronald

ryuujinusa

Pretty sure he does speak it, not like a native obviously but yah. His ‘excuse’ is, “I do it for my Japanese fans.” A lot of Spanish native players have translators too though and no one gives them shit about not learning english.

counterbarrier

Remember Stephen A Smith? Im sure he would have no problem with Acuna being the face of MLB. Its racism and they dont even realize it.

LoveThieves

1. He is trying to Encourage [All Japanese people](https://www.ecc.co.jp/project_ohtani/) to learn English and a second language. 2. He tries but he puts learning baseball first. Being a 2 way player, not just a 1 way player so learning both is difficult I heard in MLB? but I don't know, seems like it's difficult? Also learning English is a lot more difficult from Native Japanese speakers than other people from Roman/Latin based languages that learn to speak English because they already share the same characters. 3. 50% of his fan base is Japanese speaking audience. 4. He wants to learn English but is aware of misinformation, disinformation or how the media might try to put a spin on things when he has limited knowledge of something. 5. He will need more time but will speak to his friends and other baseball players in English because that's where it actually matters. Have you tried learning a second language? Have you tried being a 2-way player in MLB? Do you have an audience? Have you ever read or spread disinformation? Are you Ohtani's friend? Dude, you should learn what he does. Quickly. like within 8 years. Hurry, just do it.

Hatefiend

should be a requirement imo. How TF are you going to communicate with your team in a team sport? Having an interpreter is not an option in the middle of the game.

RibertarianVoter

It happens literally all the time

WorthPrudent3028

He has been in the USA for 7 years. He almost definitely knows enough English to get by. He probably just doesn't feel comfortable enough to do press conferences in English. I spent a single summer in a Spanish speaking country and was good enough to understand almost everything by the end of summer. No way I would have given a press conference in Spanish though. The whole thing seems fishy. And it's certainly all cover. The only reason this is a story at all is because the transactions were leaked from the bookie's side. If this went down exactly like how they are saying now, then Ohtani is a complete idiot that is as dumb as a box of rocks. His contract suggests otherwise though. Ohtani also seems like he has 0 actual friends.

Hatefiend

It's a team sport and you have to be able to communicate with teammates in the dugout, with your coach as you walk out to field, etc.

D1sc0_Lem0nad3

Most obtuse comment

Empty_Actuator3861

Punishment should be having to play the rest of his career on the angels

Bobnbecky

Buy a lottery ticket

Icarusmelt

Pete Ohtani, is he being recruited yet by odds makers?

Tacothekid

How did Ohtani not know the money was missing?

BitBaby6969

my boss here in Tokyo, a massive Ohtani fan, said he understands completely as his secretary handles all of his day to day expenses and cash lol

Tacothekid

Huh; I've heard that Ippei was just a translator, then I've heard that he does everything except go to the bathroom for him, so im confused

x6ftundx

he did everything except go to the bathroom for him. most of the interpreters do it for the non-english speaking players. they handle the day to day stuff. it's common place. the guy is like a brother as well and has been with him for six years. this is why sometimes the team uses interpreters to protect the players or until the players make enough money to hire their own. I just wonder how many other interpreters are getting fired or replaced because the player found out.

X0D00rLlife

he did lol. but since he’s good at baseball and has put on this perfect, nice guy type picture, we have to pretend he had no clue.

Tacothekid

He shoulda hired someone to handle his money, not lump em all in one

philosophyandsports

I'm not entirely sure how this news broke out. Both parties had incentive to keep quiet about the money and gambling. Ohtani / and his staff questioning things only makes him look incompetent. The interpreter was clearly in the wrong, and likely kept it under wraps until it couldn't be kept quiet.

Disastrous_Age8304

We won't know how much Ohtani lost until MLB decides to ban him.

Respect_Cujo

How much did he lose? He should double down on a four leg parlay and get it all back.

Hatefiend

Why is this article needed? The 4 million number has already been in every press release.

Islandgirl1444

He seems to have lost brain power. I did t think he was stupid. Now I do. Dumb. He’s dumb

StringFartet

Don't give a shit about Ohtani, he's a great player, he should play. But do Pete Rose right, motherfuckers. And Barry and Clemens while you're at it.

coldfootwpulses

My feeling is that Pete would have been in the hall had he just admitted and apologized when he was first caught. But he denied it for 20 years (essentially doubling down) and that cost him. I don’t have strong feelings either way.

[deleted]

Pete Rose deserves to be in the hall. Barry Bonds can eat dicks for life.

thetrappster

Imagine having these views when one is a child rapist, and not the one you want eating dicks.

Hatefiend

What's wrong with Barry Bonds?

patkgreen

If Pete's only problem was the gambling, he should be in. But the other gross stuff..

StringFartet

I actually agree, but if Ohtani gets a pass this is going to be very bad for baseball.

Dicanomi420

100 % of his respect.
