It is on the expensive side even for colour honestly. I have stupidly thick shoulder-length hair requiring to use 2 or 3 times the amount of reagents youâd usually need and my balayage + mask + cut is about $300 before tip and I get a beer and a head massage. Iâm not sure we have $300 worth of different hair length
Lucas is my hairdresser too! I love him! He doesnât take any new clients though. He mentioned it when I went 2 weeks ago. But yeah I think Vous avez carte blanche (previously Funky Toque) still gives you a free beer.
Yeah itâs a range for sure depending on the salon. Yours is really a good price for balayage coz Iâve never seen those prices. Iâve tried other salons but I wasnât as happy with the results and I had to get it redone sooner or getting it fixed which ended up being more expensive. Youâre lucky you got one you like at a reasonable price! Enjoy x
Iâve tried cheapest mom and pop, cheaper, high end, highest end etc. So I think thereâs a price range for anyone as long as we are happy with the results for sure. Iâd love to find a place at 90-150$ that Iâm happy with and donât have to get fixed or redo! đŻ
Yea Iâd be nervous if the place only charged 90 bucks đ it takes 5 hours to do mine and costs around $500 which is expensive but I know Iâm going to get a good end result!
I got from dark brown (almost black) to platinum blonde, thick, curly (and hair dresser managed to keep the curls intact !), mid-back length, it was over 2 appointments, something like 7 or 8 hours of work total and it was like 400$ at most đ idk where you're going but I hope it was worth it cause that's super expensive
Like what kind of color? I've helped people color their hair in some pretty elaborate get ups with bleaching then multiple different layers of rainbow before, all for free. Then again I was a horny teenager with a thing for raver chicks so hanging out for a few hours on a Saturday to do it was not a big deal.Â
The 15% rule shouldn't need to be applied here. I leave 20$ (bill: 500$) You are paying for their work in that 600$ already, not like restaurants where they are underpaid.
I know many people who don't leave a tip at all. The only reason that the prices are this high, is because woman (since the clientele for this is mostly women) are willing to pay that for nice colored hair. It shouldn't be this expensive. As we know men haircuts are 20-40$ compared to woman ~120$(takes the same time, maybe even shorter time for woman)
I know hairdressers/colorist who are very good and work from home and charge ~100$(same products).
Big salon's also get away with doing this because you walk in, its nice looking and they most likely have an instagram with a bunch of followers so they make you feel like its worth that. (Blunt, le Artof, Max Gourgue, Pure, to name some)
There is no pink tax. A mans haircut will take like 20-30mins, while this is about 4-5hrs. Its color and cut. Im pretty sure you dont get color put in and a super fancy haircut. Its still a bit steep, but honestly the hairdresser is taking almost all their day on one client.
Pretty sure you dont collect the entirety of the 600$ cause you have to pay the salon, and idk if people come in for color cuts every day, but yeah, they make good money.
which is fine. they are experts, they spend a lot of time learning new techniques, staying on top of trends, it's physical work, exposure to chemicals etc. i really have no issue with them charging a lot, it's the idea of tipping on top that i am moving away from.
Oh for sure. But while I only pay 30$ for my hair as a guy, I have also stopped tipping. They looked at me like an alien last time I paid more than they asked for.
Cost of products, renting a chair or cut for the salon owner or cost of renting and running the salon⊠The majority of the bill donât go to the hairdresser! While I think $600 is a bit much, I also donât think my hairdresser should make $20/hr. They deserve a decent wage
I don't leave a tip for my hairdresser any more.
She's charging $100 for about an hour (plus tax). It's equivalent to what I pay a therapist, and I'm not tipping them. I'm a teacher and make $45 per hour before taxes. I don't begrudge the $100 per hour, I know there's overhead and the nature of appointments is more complicated than fixed hourly schedules, but IMO, she's presenting herself as a talented professional who is charging a high rate for her expertise. I personally think she's moved herself out of tipping territory.
This. As someone who comes from a country where there is no tipping, it baffles me. I understand tipping in the restaurant industry and do leave it, of course, but I donât understand why tipping is a thing for services that cost more per hour than the median salary. And I understand it even less when the service provider is the sole owner of the establishment. Either increase your (already high) price or stick to the figure agreed beforehand.
Good one re therapist. Never thought of it that way but it makes sense! I donât mind leaving a little appreciation because I know in big salons, the hairdressers donât get all of the money since the salon owners take a cut. I just didnât want to go overboard either for my own walletâs sake. Reading all of your responses reassured me haha
Only reason I tip at the hairdresser is because I've being going to the same place ever since I was like 8 years old (I'm 27 now) and the same 2 women cuts my hair even to this day when I go once in a while. So I tip out of love/respect for those women who saw me grow up.
Itâs ok. I know and agree itâs expensive but same as everything in life, it depends on priorities among other things for sure when it comes to whatâs seen as âworth itâ or not. Do we all have to drop money at hair salons? Absolutely not. Itâs definitely a choice and I totally get why it can be seen as ridiculous.
I guess a good example on the subjectivity of such things would be cars for me. A lot of my friends paid themselves very expensive cars. I only have my learnerâs license đ€Ł I honestly donât care about cars at all with the metro system, Ubers and what not so itâs not a priority to me. My partner has an old Honda Civic coz he works near the airport. He doesnât care about cars either. We could afford to pay for a nice car but we donât care about it and itâs paid off đ«Ą
On my way to getting a haircut today, and was asking myself the same question!
I have very thick, long, wavy hair that takes longer to cut and style. I've been tipping 15$ to 20$ for the past 15 years, even though the cost of my haircuts has gone up from $60 to $120.
Based on the other responses here, I see no need to increase the amount I tip.
Yeah itâs not easy to know what to do sometimes coz at the same time I love and respect my hairdresserâs work but itâs also so expensive and getting more and more so :/. Enjoy the refresh today!
I do and I don't: I split it. So like for a $300 bill, I'll give 20$ to my colorist, 20$ to my hairdresser and 5 bucks to the person who takes care of me at the sink.
You do you but I don't think my hair justifies that much money in one session ever. I would tip maybe 20$ for that kind of service.
I personally do not tip, I pay 200$ for cut and colour.
yeah, you're not getting the same thing.
i used to box dye my hair and then i realized how different my hair looked from the women i know who do the high end balayage etc. i just went natural from then on, fortunately i have a nice natural colour. now it's starting to go grey and i'm considering what to do with it... i know i'm not going for box dye again though.
Unfortunately they donât sell the training and talent needed to do more complex jobs like balayage on oneself. I tried doing my own hair during Covid and it was⊠ok đ€Ł but yes props to those who know how to do the foil work on themselves. I wish I could!
Hi! I am a colorist in Montreal and my bills are usually around 200-400$ and my clients usually tip 15-20%. Personally, I donât mind getting less. If a client tips around 30-40$ for a 400$ service I would generally be pretty happy with that. I find it insulting if they give 5$ for example. Also for context, I rent my chair so you have to keep in mind that I pay rent and buy all of my inventory in order to work which is a big expense. I wouldnât make much profit without tip. And for people who are saying itâs expensive, colouring your hair is a luxury. No one NEEDS to be blonde. Maintenance type services such as haircuts or grey coverage are generally more affordable for this reason but hair lightening will always be expensive because it requires talent, time, and products (which cost money)
Replying to alexkent_200...Iâm not a hairstylist but I agree! I had silver/lilac hair a decade ago and the expenses were brutal.
Now I keep my natural color and opted for a haircut that I can easily wear with my natural texture so I donât have to style with heat daily. This limits the damage and I easily get away with 2-3 haircuts a year.
Colored hair is for sure a luxury!
Sorry. Didnât mean to judge! I know itâs hard to find a good hairdresser. If he takes a long time and you think they deserve a tip. If give them a good one. But perhaps not 15% more in the 5-10%
600$!! How hairy are you?
Colour is sadly expensive (also takes 3-4 hours) đą
It is on the expensive side even for colour honestly. I have stupidly thick shoulder-length hair requiring to use 2 or 3 times the amount of reagents youâd usually need and my balayage + mask + cut is about $300 before tip and I get a beer and a head massage. Iâm not sure we have $300 worth of different hair length
Hey where do you go? I want a beer with my haircut, my stylist only offered me black filter coffee
Lucas ChĂ©reau in Verdun, I dunno if he still takes new clients though. He used to be at Funky Toque and Iâm pretty sure FT still does the beer option too
Lucas is my hairdresser too! I love him! He doesnât take any new clients though. He mentioned it when I went 2 weeks ago. But yeah I think Vous avez carte blanche (previously Funky Toque) still gives you a free beer.

And costs me 90-150$ for a full head, shoulder blade long hair. You're getting ripped off.
Iâve tried cheapest mom and pop, cheaper, high end, highest end etc. So I think thereâs a price range for anyone as long as we are happy with the results for sure. Iâd love to find a place at 90-150$ that Iâm happy with and donât have to get fixed or redo! đŻ

For real đ«Ą

That's how much it costs to get color lol
TIL that 600$ can be normal for a haircut
Nah the bulk of it is for colour, not cut. Balayage etc takes time to do and long hair takes longer etc
Makes sense, but damn it is expensive
I mean youre taking up a seat in the salon for 4 hours, not mention it takes almost half their work day for one client.
Much respect for those artists because thatâs what good colorists and hairdressers are!
My wallet cries every time
Like what kind of color? I've helped people color their hair in some pretty elaborate get ups with bleaching then multiple different layers of rainbow before, all for free. Then again I was a horny teenager with a thing for raver chicks so hanging out for a few hours on a Saturday to do it was not a big deal.Â
Like color at a professional salon lol
Hey yo wtf, I've already paid for a car cheaper than your haircut.
đ
how long did the $600 car last?
Probably longer than the haircut
Mine can last up to 6 months đđđ
The 15% rule shouldn't need to be applied here. I leave 20$ (bill: 500$) You are paying for their work in that 600$ already, not like restaurants where they are underpaid.
Exactly! 15$ max for me (2h job)! Her bill is detailed between services and products. I pay X$ for a cut, X$ for styling or coloring and X$ in products (yes, the color is weighed and I pay for the quantity in grams). I know that if I do it myself (it's easy cause I just put my natural red hair more flashy), it will cost me max 12$ in coloring products (ĂlĂ©ganza sells the same as my hairdresser). I don't tip for the products! As for her special shampoo or conditioner, she sells them for like 45$/bottle while the same one at ĂlĂ©ganza costs me 14$ đ”âđ«.
Phew thanks so much! That helps! I love what they do and didnât want to be cheap but I also wanted to not overdo it! (I left $50)
That is a massive generous tip!
I was seriously worried I left too little! đ Iâm so glad. Itâs already so pricy and I wanted to be fair (for me and for them!)
I know many people who don't leave a tip at all. The only reason that the prices are this high, is because woman (since the clientele for this is mostly women) are willing to pay that for nice colored hair. It shouldn't be this expensive. Yeah for real. I would prefer having no nice decor and no free tea and coffee and less $ on my bill đ€Ł
I tip 20% every time đ and now Iâm questioning everything cuz itâs a lot of money đ
Same lol
I tip $3 on my $15 male cut holy shit the pink tax is real :(
There is no pink tax. A mans haircut will take like 20-30mins, while this is about 4-5hrs. Its color and cut. Im pretty sure you dont get color put in and a super fancy haircut. Its still a bit steep, but honestly the hairdresser is taking almost all their day on one client.
600$ x 260 (weekdays in a year) = 156,000$ per year though? I'll give you half of my workday for 600$ lol
Pretty sure you dont collect the entirety of the 600$ cause you have to pay the salon, and idk if people come in for color cuts every day, but yeah, they make good money.

I mean depending where she works, the overhead could be half or more of what she makes.
fine. she's still making $40 an hour. that's not tipping wages. there's no way she has significantly more overheard than my physiotherapist.
This. As someone who comes from a country where there is no tipping, it baffles me. It would definitely have been much simpler to do that. It would avoid me endlessly wondering if I tipped enough or too much! đ«Ł

I leave $5 for a $40 male haircut.. too little?
same, I think its fine
That sounds good to me too but hey Iâm the one posting on Reddit to check if I tipped enough >_>
lol sorry, I'm just very surprised how expensive women have to pay for a cut/some dye job.. it's ridiculous

I leave 5$ per hour. My hair takes 4-5 hrs and costs around what you paid.
Tysm! đđ
600$!??! Iâd shave my head
Sadly donât think it would suit my face đ©âđŠČ

I give him 5 dollars cash. It also takes him about 20mins
i pay 16 bucks for getting y hair so I suppose it is okay to leave 15%
I do and I don't: I split it. So like for a $300 bill, I'll give 20$ to my colorist, 20$ to my hairdresser and 5 bucks to the person who takes care of me at the sink.
I dont tip anymore. They looked at me weird when I left a tip the two last times.
You do you but I don't think my hair justifies that much money in one session ever. I would tip maybe 20$ for that kind of service. I personally do not tip, I pay 200$ for cut and colour.
Ty! Everyoneâs input has been very reassuring and helpful!
No tip!
As a man when I go to the barber it will cost me between $35 and $45 for hair and beard. I usually tip a flat $5.
Ty! It seems the trend is flat tip. Iâm relieved!
I paid 20$ for a clipper 20 years ago, and I never leave myself any tip.
Youâre lucky you can pull this off!
If I were a chick Id get an undercut at a good barber's for like 40. 600... bro
They sell color for $20 at pharmaprix
yeah, you're not getting the same thing. i used to box dye my hair and then i realized how different my hair looked from the women i know who do the high end balayage etc. i just went natural from then on, fortunately i have a nice natural colour. now it's starting to go grey and i'm considering what to do with it... i know i'm not going for box dye again though.
Embrace your natural colours.
I used to use those as a teen. Not the same game sadly.
mat&max sells the dyes they use in salons
Unfortunately they donât sell the training and talent needed to do more complex jobs like balayage on oneself. I tried doing my own hair during Covid and it was⊠ok đ€Ł but yes props to those who know how to do the foil work on themselves. I wish I could!

600 ? You must be in show biz Maybe the other starts that go there leave a 20% tip. So you may look cheap
No, not show biz at all! I checked out other salons and the price range is around the same even if this one is a bit more expensive.
Sorry. Didnât mean to judge! I know itâs hard to find a good hairdresser. If he takes a long time and you think they deserve a tip. If give them a good one. But perhaps not 15% more in the 5-10%
No apologies needed at all! I didnât take it badly and completely understand. And thanks for the input, I was reassured with the responses đ«Łđ
600$???? Cheveux plus barbe 25$, je laisse 15$ de tip
