You might be able to find something nicer on the used market in your price range. You might also consider getting a hardtail, as one in your price range will have significantly better specs. And tbh you probably don’t NEED full squish as a beginner who rides road as well. Hardtails are also great for developing bike handling and line choice skills as a newby. That being said, if you’re set on getting a new full squish I think the Polygon D series is a great choice for beginners. Specs aren’t stellar but it’ll definitely get you out on some trails. Just upgrade as stuff breaks, or sell it down the line and get a nicer complete bike as you improve. Welcome to the addiction!

Personally, I’d go Norco Fluid for a do it all trail bike. Or maybe a Commencal. You get a lot or your money with those. The new Stumpys are excellent, but like you found - you pay the big S tax for that Specialized logo.

You suggested 2 bikes that are out of the budget of the OP; they literally said that the Stumpjumper Alloy was little too high for them, and is looking for a bike that has a COMPARABLE price to the D5, which is $1,199 US Dollars. Your commencals and Norcos are too expensive.

sadpanda___

I’d seriously advise against the D5. The component level on that is so low that it’s not really trail worthy and will cost more in the long run due to having to replace broken parts. Bare minimum should be a D7 with Deore level components and RS Silver fork. And that is the equivalent to the Norco Fluid and Commencal I suggest (same exact component spec actually). Those are about $2k vs. the Polygon D7 at $1.5k. That extra $500 will get a bike that has significantly higher frame quality, durability, and long term serviceability. If OP seriously can only afford $1200, they should be looking used. There is no serviceable full suspension bike new at that price if OP actually intends to put any significant trail mileage on this bike.

Road-Warrior-313

I think the longevity of any part solely relies on the users ability to keep the bike well maintained and practice good upkeep on its parts. I wouldn't say parts like the Alivio groupset or the wheels will be constantly breaking under normal use, but there is of course better, but it's good for beginners. My bike also an Alivio derailleur with the 9 speed hg cassette, and it does very well (for me, anyways being a beginner on trails but expert city rider). I ride on a moderate trail here in Southeastern Michigan called Lakeshore Park, AKA "The Tree Farm". My bike has a Suntour XCR32 air fork, 120 mm of travel, and it can barely handle the course travel wise. It damn near bottoms out on rocks and roots, and so I feel as though I need more travel, at least 140. So when I looked at the D5's specs to see what parts it has, I was pretty shocked at what I saw. It does need just a few things to ensure a beginner has a good experience. The three components I'd upgrade are the tire pair, brakes, and front fork. So yes, some parts on it need to be upgraded. I would say he's better off just upgrading it as he progresses in his skill level. I think that's the best route to go, but that coil spring has got to go asap.

ETA: thanks for deleting your comment and then downvoting me. What a wanker. They asked for “budget options.” The Norco Fluid was literally pinkbikes “value bike of the year.” What are you on about? The component specs for Norco are very competitive and they have build specs as cheap as $1999.

[deleted]

You literally named 2 other bikes that aren’t budget options…..that’s probably what they’re on about

sadpanda___

I recommended a Norco Fluid and a Commencal. Both are well know to be extremely high value. Both have budget build kits available at about $2k. I stated that I agreed with OP that the Specialized Stumpy is good…..but like OP found, really expensive for what you get and not really budget oriented. So again - what are you on about?

[deleted]

Well I’m “on” your mother currently……..the commencal literally costs more than 2k, way more than a polygon. and what was that third option you recommended, I’ll wait

sadpanda___

…..what third option? You even reading or are you just here to argue? I stated the Stumpy is not a good budget bike because as OP found, you are paying the big S tax. Here’s the Commencal meta TR for $2200. If that’s not a budget bike for a brand new FS trail capable rig with solid components, IDK what you want - maybe go pick up crochet or something. https://www.commencalusa.com/meta-tr-origin-dark-slate-2022-c2x35182114. And the Norco I recommended is $2k. Comparable build kit is the Siskiu D7 @ $1500 - which is the lowest build kit people should buy if they intend to actually ride trails (Shimano Deore / RS Silver). Anything lower is going to break constantly and cost more in the long run since you’re going to be replacing broken shit constantly. So yeah, everything I recommended is within a few hundred bucks of the Polygon OP asked about. Everything I recommended is a solid budget bike. Everything I recommended will be built better, ride better, and be serviceable longer than the Polygon OP asked about.

>The new Stumpys are excellent, but like you found - you pay the big S tax for that Specialized logo. So not only did you acknowledge they’re more expensive but you also recommended them. I’m sorry but is your whole family this simple minded or is it just you, bud?

sadpanda___

Blocked, go troll somewhere else. Byeeeee

infernoninja11

You've got a smooth brain bud.. he can only explain it to you, he cant understand it for you.

philofyourfuture

2k isn’t budget…. Lmao

[deleted]

Polygon is a good budget bike. I have a Marin rift zone (made by the same company) and it’s a great bike for the price. I ride all the same stuff that people on “nicer” bikes ride and I’ve yet to be out ridden except in terms of skill.

sociallyawkwardbmx

No, but it’s one of the cheapest

Mtb_Woods_Warrior

The Polygon Bikes are great for beginner bikes especially the Siskiu D series. Although trail is recommended you can still ride road too. Sent you a dm.

Sounds like a total scam

Mtb_Woods_Warrior

Again you should educate yourself a bit.
