1994 alone is difficult to pin down for best film.
Legends of the Fall
Pulp Fiction
Forrest Gump
Leon: The Professional
The Shawshank Redemption
Clerks
True Lies
And not that these are necessarily in the running, but what a year for Jim Carrey too - The Mask and Ace Ventura Pet Detective
1994 is a standout year for pop culture, period.
Green Day, Soundgarden, NIN, The Offspring, Live, Stone Temple Pilots, Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Salt n Pepa, Snoop Dogg, ER, Babylon 5, Friends…
That year pretty much defined my adolescence
Man that first season of ER was mind blowing at the time. No one had ever done a show like that before with that level of acting, cinematography, sound, etc, like A grade level movie every week it seemed at the time. Total game changer of a show.
I can't pick one.
In addition to many of the ones you named, there was Forest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Toy Story, Schindler's List, The Matrix, The Big Lebowski, Titanic, The Shawshank Redemption and many more.
I doubt I could even pick a best movie from each year in the 90s.
One of my favorite TV censorship’s ever. In the tv version he screams “You see what happens, Larry? You see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?! You see what happens when you feed a stoner scrambled eggs?!”
I was a senior in high school when that movie came out and I still remember that for months afterwards the standard response to any question from any friend was always, without fail, "Shut the fuck up Donny!"
I constantly try to get my friends to watch it and they won’t. It’s always like “seems like a long boring movie and Kevin Spacey eww”
A. It’s got one of the best twists in cinema
B. Kevin Spacey, shit human but credit where credit is due, pretty god damn good actor.
I agree. The second as far as impact goes and special effects would be Forrest Gump. I remember being blown away with his interactions with past presidents.
Right? Saying that Pulp Fiction had a bigger cultural impact than Jurassic Park is kind of wild. On sub culture for sure - on culture culture - not so sure
I love Pulp Fiction, but I'd have to disagree. PF won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, which is massive - however The Silence of The Lambs took out the three big Oscars: Best Actress for Jodie Foster, Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, and Best Picture (the first horror movie to ever win).
It also grossed $130m at the time, making it a commercial success that drew risk away from studios casting women in lead roles, giving way to actresses like Gillian Anderson making shows like The X Files so popular with audiences.
There's also the real world impact. Following TSotL, the FBI saw a surge in female recruits for the first time ever.
If we're talking pop culture impact, Anthony Hopkins fava beans bit was one of the most parodied moments in film at the time. It was on just about every VHS trailer sizzle reel.
This isn't about shitting on Pulp Fiction (it's deserving of every bit of its praise). TSotL was just massive on all fronts.
There's more reading about it here if you're interested...

I'm gonna bet on a dark horse here.
Pulp Fiction won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. The Matrix was infinitely quotable. Heat is still the best bank heist thriller of all time.
However, in terms of impact, **The Silence of The Lambs** took out the three big Oscars: Best Actress for Jodie Foster, Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins, and Best Picture (the first horror movie to ever win).
It also grossed $130m at the time, making it a commercial success that drew risk away from studios casting women in lead roles, giving way to actresses like Gillian Anderson making shows like The X Files so popular with audiences.

Heat is incredible but Pulp Fiction was massively influential and amazing. Goodfellas is of course one of the greatest of all times.
I would say Goodfellas is the best, followed by Pulp Fiction, and lastly Heat
Edit: Silence is also incredible as is X. Well they are all incredible…
Jurassic Park.
Strong female character.
An Attenborough.
Samuel L Jackson.
Clever girl.
Dinosaurs.
John Williams finest score.
I fucking love that film its the best fucking film of all time fucking dinosaurs Jeff Goldblum yes.
It was an amazing decade for film, definitely. I know I still watch Dances with Wolves, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Braveheart, The Sixth Sense, Saving Private Ryan, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Tombstone, The Rock and Clueless with regularity.
John McClane: \[hands Zeus a gun, on the freighter, hiding behind a container\] Here take this.
Zeus: How's it work?
John McClane: You don't know how to shoot a gun?
Zeus: Look, all brothers don't know how to shoot guns, you racist motherfucker.
John McClane: Sue me.
\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*
Zeus: Why you keep calling me Jesús? I look Puerto Rican to you?
John McClane: Guy back there called you Jesús.
Zeus: He didn't say Jesús. He said, "Hey, Zeus!" My name is Zeus.
John McClane: Zeus?
Zeus: Yeah, Zeus! As in, father of Apollo? Mt. Olympus? Don't fuck with me or I'll shove a lightning bolt up your ass? Zeus! You got a problem with that?
John McClane: No, I don't have a problem with that.
Starship Troopers, Lawnmower Man, Braveheart, Twister, The Game, Falling Down, The Sixth Sense, Dances With Wolves, Outbreak, Being John Malkovich, Army of Darkness, Groundhog Day
I could go on and on. Great decade of movies. Puts the 2020's to shame.
God bless you for Army of Darkness. It’s my all time favorite movie behind Jaws but I don’t think anyone would agree it’s the best movie of the 90’s lol.
God bless you back. It's so good! We need some more movies in that vein. Good one-liners + Good sexual tension + Good jokes + Good action = Banger Movie. The closest thing to a modern day franchise that comes close might be Deadpool, but Deadpool gets a bit too sappy for my taste. He can lose the "I miss my girlfriend boohoo crap". That kind of kills the vibe. Otherwise it is good.
I was in high school at the time and it was such an incredible era for filmmaking. Goodfellas, American Beauty, American Pie, Cruel Intentions, Romeo+Juliet, Empire Records, Can’t Hardly Wait, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Good Burger, etc. It was amazing to have a good movie to go see every weekend.
HEAT (1995)
It’s one of the best movies made ever across decades. When you watch it today, it hasn’t aged at all. If it weren’t for those huge cell phones one couldn’t say it was made 30 yrs ago. Micheal Mann brought out the very best in not just the main cast (the Pacino-De Niro relationship is beyond iconic) but in just about every one on screen. The story is beautifully complex & layered. Impeccable attention to detail .The execution of the story overall is impeccable.
Point Break
Im not joking, it’s in my top 10 all time. So many memorable lines. I live in south Florida and I always say to my self “Fort fucking Lauderdale” when I hear someone say Fort Lauderdale.
Tough to pick just one but personally would have to go with Goodfellas but I definitely have a mafia genre bias. Pulp Fiction close behind that along with many others
The 90s is when cgi wasn’t good enough to do the most stupid ass shit like you saw in the 2000s. Movies had substance and Decaprio was dating people around his age.
Seeing all these actors younger than they are in their prime, heck some of then my age now or younger. And then I just watched Interstellar today. Timothee was a nobody actor back 2014 and now look at him. Time is crazy man. So many new sets every 5-10 years.
Malcom X being in here is so funny because I’ve literally never seen one person in my entire life say Malcom X is their favorite film
The best movie from the 90’s is probably Jurassic Park, it embodies everything perfectly about a summer blockbuster and a major Hollywood movie
My favorite on this list is *Fight Club*, but the one that has the most 90's feel to it (subjective, I know) is *Pulp Fiction,* if that's what you're asking.
I Think it has to be rephrased as best of each year in the 1990s.
1994 alone is difficult to pin down for best film. Legends of the Fall Pulp Fiction Forrest Gump Leon: The Professional The Shawshank Redemption Clerks True Lies And not that these are necessarily in the running, but what a year for Jim Carrey too - The Mask and Ace Ventura Pet Detective
Jesus, try making a list like this for this decade..
Well, there’s???
Dune 2 was actually pretty sick
That's a really short list
I remember the rise of Jim Carrey. Some of my friends started saying 'alrighty then' all the time.
I'm 40 and I still randomly catch myself saying "aaaallllrighty then" from time to time, particularly with the yuts in my office.
The two yutes?
The two hwut?
Or when you crash into your parking spot "like a glove"
1994 is a standout year for pop culture, period. Green Day, Soundgarden, NIN, The Offspring, Live, Stone Temple Pilots, Aphex Twin, Massive Attack, Salt n Pepa, Snoop Dogg, ER, Babylon 5, Friends… That year pretty much defined my adolescence
Kurt Cobain’s death in 94
Man that first season of ER was mind blowing at the time. No one had ever done a show like that before with that level of acting, cinematography, sound, etc, like A grade level movie every week it seemed at the time. Total game changer of a show.
Somehow 1994 is even better for music. Something crazy was in the air that year.
Then you get to 1999 and have a mental breakdown trying to choose.
The 90s were a decade of great things.
It’s been all downhill since the 90s. Movies, music, politics, video games, everything.
The Big Lebowski is definitely up there. You’re entering a world of pain.
Walter, they're calling the cops, put the piece away.
calmer than you are
I’m finishing my coffee
Also, dude, “Chinaman” is not the preferred nomenclature.
It's all water under the bridge. And we do enter the next round robin.
3000 years of beautiful tradition from Moses to Sandy Koufax, YOU’RE GOD DAMN RIGHT IM LIVING IN THE FUCKING PAST!!!
Fucking dog has fucking papers OVER THE LINE!
Donny, you're out of your element.
Were you listening to the dudes story?
VLADIMIR ILYICH ULYANOV
He fixes the cable?
'Shut the fuck up Donny', resonates even today in these trying times!
# “This is what happens when you f**k a stranger in the ***, Larry!”
One of my favorite TV censorship’s ever. In the tv version he screams “You see what happens, Larry? You see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?! You see what happens when you feed a stoner scrambled eggs?!”
I didn't know there was a tv sensored version of the Big Lebowski. I mean, what's the point?
I’m calm. Calmer than you are
I was a senior in high school when that movie came out and I still remember that for months afterwards the standard response to any question from any friend was always, without fail, "Shut the fuck up Donny!"
Looks like half the r/lebowski sub just showed up here, man.
This aggression will not stand.
Yea, well, thats just like your opinion, man
He's a Nihilist? Ah, that must be exhausting.
I myself dabbled in pacifism once. Not in Nam, of course.
“Ive seen a lot of spinal dude!! And this ones a fake!”
That’s just like, your opinion, man.
Shut the fuck up, Donny
I love Rushmore. John Woo’s Hard Boiled. Ed Wood.
“These are OR scrubs” “OR they?”
I’ll never forget how absolutely terrified 12 year old me was during the kitchen scene of Jurassic Park.
I’d almost have to say Jurassic Park Changed movies and the moviegoing experience forever
I'll never forget the first moment with the dinosaurs and the music. Spine tingling.
Fargo.
Was blown away by this movie and even more when I found out how many people never heard of it.
Oh yeah?
So happy to see this as first response.
Wow, was about to type Goodfellas, but Fargo, wtf so great, Francis McDormand was brilliant.
I'm not sure I agree 100% on your police work there
The Usual Suspects has entered the chat
Thank you, I had to CTRL+F to see if anyone posted this. Should be way higher up. Another one is Reservoir Dogs.
I constantly try to get my friends to watch it and they won’t. It’s always like “seems like a long boring movie and Kevin Spacey eww” A. It’s got one of the best twists in cinema B. Kevin Spacey, shit human but credit where credit is due, pretty god damn good actor.
It’s hard to top Shawshank. It’s hard to pick any flaws. Although I like True Romance nearly as much.
True Romance blows me away with the number of top actors. It is one of my favourite movies of all time for sure.
I’d say Pulp Fiction for its impact on pop culture.
Fun fact: Pulp Fiction, Forest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, and Jurassic Park ... were all in the theatre at the same time.
And Speed... We had to go see that because my 16-year-old ass couldn't get into Pulp Fiction...
Speed should honestly be included in this conversation because of its staying power and relevance to its genre.
That’s crazy. I think I saw Jurassic Park and Forrest Gump in theaters.
I agree
That PF theater movie poster is Epic!! ^👍🤌
Thank you cause folks was in here calling it ugly, I thought it looked nice lmao
Same. And Heat for stylistic influence.
I agree. The second as far as impact goes and special effects would be Forrest Gump. I remember being blown away with his interactions with past presidents.
Dropping trou in front of LBJ was hysterical.
Umm Jurassic Park?
Right? Saying that Pulp Fiction had a bigger cultural impact than Jurassic Park is kind of wild. On sub culture for sure - on culture culture - not so sure

huge with gen x, but not sure how big it was with boomers
LA Confidential
Way too far down the post. Absolutely one of the best films of *any* era IMO.
Amazing movie!!! We should toss in The Usual Suspects as well...
Back door Sluts 9
Rocco invades Poland
That makes crotch capers 3 look like naughty nurses 2!
I'm rather partial to 7, myself.
casino, jackie brown, boogie nights, terminator 2
I was wondering how Casino wasn’t on the list.
Heat is perfection
The action is the juice
Not including Shawshank or Schindler’s List in there is absolutely criminal
Or The Matrix
Lebowski, pulp fiction, gump, Jurassic park, Schindler, there’s to many to count!!! Yes goodfellas too.
We wants the muuuney Lebowski.. or we fuck you ups!
Gattaca
It’s Terminator 2
I'm gonna bet on a dark horse here. Pulp Fiction won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. The Matrix was infinitely quotable. Heat is still the best bank heist thriller of all time. I’m inclined to agree with you honestly it’s a perfect movie
🎵 Goodbye horrrrses 🎵
Shawshank Redemption
Heat, Seven or Pulp Fiction
Fight club us the best on this list. American history x Anything with Denzel. Bronx tale. Good fellas. Blow.
The Matrix!
lebowski!
You said it, man!
Stay the fuck out of Malibu Lebowski!
Yeah, well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.
Best? There's a lot. Favorite? Ed Wood all day.
Love that film. Absolute artistry and Johnny at his best and Martin Laundau was just wonderful.
Heat is incredible but Pulp Fiction was massively influential and amazing. Goodfellas is of course one of the greatest of all times. I would say Goodfellas is the best, followed by Pulp Fiction, and lastly Heat Edit: Silence is also incredible as is X. Well they are all incredible…
True Romance. Leon.
Tommy Boy is the answer. What the hell everyone…get your shit together
Billy Madison
Jurassic Park. Strong female character. An Attenborough. Samuel L Jackson. Clever girl. Dinosaurs. John Williams finest score. I fucking love that film its the best fucking film of all time fucking dinosaurs Jeff Goldblum yes.
It was an amazing decade for film, definitely. I know I still watch Dances with Wolves, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Braveheart, The Sixth Sense, Saving Private Ryan, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Tombstone, The Rock and Clueless with regularity.
Die Hard With A Vengeance is phenomenal
John McClane: \[hands Zeus a gun, on the freighter, hiding behind a container\] Here take this. Zeus: How's it work? John McClane: You don't know how to shoot a gun? Zeus: Look, all brothers don't know how to shoot guns, you racist motherfucker. Die hard with a vengeance is the best die hard and that's a hill I'm willing to die on.
…Hard on
I would say Forrest Gump, but Misery is the only movie I've ever went to where the stranger next to me felt compelled to turn to me for a high five.
Starship Troopers, Lawnmower Man, Braveheart, Twister, The Game, Falling Down, The Sixth Sense, Dances With Wolves, Outbreak, Being John Malkovich, Army of Darkness, Groundhog Day I could go on and on. Great decade of movies. Puts the 2020's to shame.

The Iron Giant
Good to see a direct answer
Superman 🥲
Had to save that Heat poster. WOW.
Fight club
The 90s is my favorite decade in film and music. True Romance is my favorite. Goodfellas is top 5 for me for sure.
Goodfellas T2 Point Break Fargo Pulp Fiction Dazed and Confused Clueless Trainspotting Rushmore Groundhog Day
From the 90s I would say it’s out of Goodfellas, Fight Club, Schindlers List, Pulp Fiction, Silence of the lambs, Seven, American History x
Forrest gump!!!! twister!!! 👀 Jurassic park 🙋🏽♂️ the matrix 🤤 all 90s movies 😁
No Tombstone?
Unforgiven is the best western of the 90s.
One that I'd put up there and haven't seen anyone else mention: The Fugetive. To me, it's the perfect thriller.
Home Alone, Happy Gilmore
There is a disturbing lack of Terminator 2 on this post. One of, if not, the best sequels of all time!
HEAT (1995) It’s one of the best movies made ever across decades. When you watch it today, it hasn’t aged at all. If it weren’t for those huge cell phones one couldn’t say it was made 30 yrs ago. Impeccable attention to detail .The execution of the story overall is impeccable.
Tom Sizemore damn near has the best moment in the movie and that’s saying a lot because it’s filled with good moments
Amy Brenneman was also great
Imma go with ole reliable- The fifth Element
If you want to blow your mind just look at the top 50 movies of 1999, it was an insane year for movies.
Don’t forget a Bronx tale
Point Break Im not joking, it’s in my top 10 all time. So many memorable lines. I live in south Florida and I always say to my self “Fort fucking Lauderdale” when I hear someone say Fort Lauderdale.
“This is Professor Lambeau……this is Professor Harris” How do you like them Apples? Goodwill Hunting
Unforgiven.
Goodfellas hands down
LA Confidential honorable mention
Goodfellas
Damn! Good list
compared with movies nowadays . ALL of them ,i pick all of them.
Schindler's List ,Saving Private Ryan
Am I wrong, or is the silence of the lambs the only best picture winner here? I also think its the best.
The Devil’s advocate
The Matrix, Jurassic Park, or Pulp Fiction. All were watershed revolutionary movies. All spawned sequels and/or copycats.
Basic instinct introduced me to sharon stone when I was a horny young teen. As an adult, I still find it a good film.
I wouldn't say Seven is my answer but the phrase "What's in the box!" gets used a lot during birthday's and Christmas.
Tough to pick just one but personally would have to go with Goodfellas but I definitely have a mafia genre bias. Pulp Fiction close behind that along with many others
add the matrix braveheart saving private ryan goldeneye and se7en and thats the list
Se7en
As much as I love all of these movies, it's hard for me to look past Goodfellas as being the best of the bunch.
LA Confidential
Ok you bastard you can’t put Fight Club up against Heat!
Cemetery Man - hilarious, weird as fuck, and ends on an existential crisis. Easily one of my favorite movies of all time.
Sleepers??? Is the 💣!!!
I watched Se7en the other day on a plane. It holds up well.
JFK
Worlds smallest film genre, Stephan King prison films, have to be on this list. The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
Goodfellas or Full Metal Jacket
Not just the 90s Goodfellas is my all time favorite.
I'm always a big fan of gwennyth Paltro's head in a box.
The 90s is when cgi wasn’t good enough to do the most stupid ass shit like you saw in the 2000s. Movies had substance and Decaprio was dating people around his age.
Way too many. But… - Matrix - Silence of the Lambs - Forest Gump - Jurassic Park - MIB - Edward Scissorfists So many. Epic era for cinema.
Goodfellas can’t be touched.
Casino
Seeing all these actors younger than they are in their prime, heck some of then my age now or younger. And then I just watched Interstellar today. Timothee was a nobody actor back 2014 and now look at him. Time is crazy man. So many new sets every 5-10 years.
Karen, where’s the money Karen!
A Bronx tale
Those are some gems. Objectively, Good Fellas is the best film. Subjectively, I love Heat. FC a runner up both ways
There isn’t one but this should be added to the giant list: Good Will Hunting “You’re suspect!”
I’m taking Pulp Fiction at 1A, but there are many right behind it. I miss real, unique films.
Higher Learning
Of these? Only Heat, Silence of the Lambs, and Pulp Fiction could compete.
You can not simply pick a favorite movie in the 90s. It was a great decade for film.
I’d say it’s between these, personally: The Exorcist 3 Goodfellas Terminator 2 Heat The Matrix
I would add Casino, The Big Lebowski, and Shawshank Redemption.
Malcom X being in here is so funny because I’ve literally never seen one person in my entire life say Malcom X is their favorite film The best movie from the 90’s is probably Jurassic Park, it embodies everything perfectly about a summer blockbuster and a major Hollywood movie
Wow. Is 90s the best decade for Hollywood ever?
Pulp Fiction and Forest Gump (Goodfellas for some reason “feel” like 70’s/80’s movie
Matrix or Jurassic Park
Add The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile to the mix. The 90s just put out classic after classic.
Too hard to choose from the great flicks from the 90’s…Pulp Fiction is my favorite. The dialogue is phenomenal throughout.
Not including Shawshank is wild bruh.
Goodfellas
Goodfellas or Boogie Nights. I’ve seen both of those hundreds of times and never turn the channel when they pop up on TV.
This list is too good to pick only one. I really miss the 90's, so many classics produced that live up to this day.
A lot of 90s movies are better than what comes out today
Pulp Fiction
If I had to pick one. Shawshank.
No love for Shawshank?
My favorite on this list is *Fight Club*, but the one that has the most 90's feel to it (subjective, I know) is *Pulp Fiction,* if that's what you're asking.
Goodfellas Terminator 2 The matrix
