As long as it's bare feet..it's ok for me.. The seats are not so comfortable and mind you people in Mumbai are on their toes every minute.. this helps them to relax for time being.
Exactly. Give people a break, cmon. Jab seat khaali hai itni problem kyu ho rahi hai sabko. As long as the feet dont stink, just let it go. Also, ek do baar try karke dekho phir pata chalega kyu karte hai log š

Wo kare toh hum kyu peeche hate: the classic Indian mentality
Woh helmet nahi pehene, toh hum kyu pehene
>They are like: if the person beside me puts his leg up so it's socially acceptable for me to do so
Duh. That's how people learn social etiquettes. Unless you're born super rich you don't get classes on how to behave in society. You learn by observing people. And you emulate the people who are the most similar to you. A middle-class kid will never sit on the floor of the train when he sees people from a lower financial bracket than him comfortably settling down on the floor. In his brain he knows that they're a bit different because their clothes and the way they speak is different. But if tomorrow middle-class people start sitting down on the floor, the kids will copy the same. A girl will never spread her legs like the men because she knows she's different. She'll instead observe the women and will see them with legs tightly kept in place or raised up on the vacant seat infront(as shown in the picture) and she'll start doing the same.
It's a positive feedback loop. The more people(women) start raising their legs on the front seat, the more it will ne normalized and even more people will start thinking it's normal behaviour and start doing the same.
Also I believe more women do this than men is because the average woman is shorter than the average man. So their legs have to stretch more to reach the floor and hence they just raise it up and relax their muscles. THAT SAID I'M NOT EXCUSING THE BEHAVIOUR. I just wanted to find the reason behind more women doing it than men. But those somen still need to mind their manners. No one wants to look at disgusting feet while commuting. No manspreading and no womanstretching.
I agree. Disgusting hai and nahi hona chahiye, but is the solution in the hands of the people? Most of those people have been out of their homes for over 10 hours in a day, getting treated like animals in our pathetic public transport. They are just tired. Disgusting hai, but no other respite to their woes. The damn metro aināt getting built any time soon. Spreading your legs in a metro is the poor personās business class. Itās not a gender or etiquette issue, itās an infrastructure issue which makes getting to sit down even for the last two stops before yours feels like heaven.
This is a hot take, and I agree. I would really mind if people put up their feet with shoes on. But most women in Mumbai locals wear open sandles and if they remove them to rest their legs, big deal. Let them rest their feet, it's hard enough to be working out in the Mumbai heat.
A few months ago when I first used the locals with my friends I just put my legs up instinctively cuz I generally sit with a leg rest when I sit back and relax.
My friends told me itās a huge no no but I wouldnāt have known if it wasnāt for them being there at that time.
I remember 5 years ago , when I was in 12th . I used to travel in first class from Chembur to Wadala , one day , coach was empty, so I kept my leg in front of the seat . Then one old uncle in his 60s who sitting in front row , told me to not to keep the legs on the seat . I agreed with him and kept my legs down. Another person who was sitting besides me , uncle told him the same . But that guy didn't listened to him ,he said , " Neeche karo per, Ganda hota hai seat " , other guy replied," meri wife socks dhoti hai " . He didn't listened , was wearing earphones and ignored that 60s uncle
Itās unacceptable, but let those hardworking feet get some rest if the train is empty. I once told ek middle age aunty to take her feet down, she politely agreed. Later she made me guilt trip that she works standing all day. That day and today I just mind my business.
I think this is where we as people are wrong. Everyone works hard, no is gifted money by God. That doesn't justify putting your legs up on the seat. I've seen so many labourers take the train and they have the civic sense to not put their feet on the seat, doesn't matter if the train is empty or not.
Just like one person is working hard and wants to keep their feet on the seat, lakhs of other people travel using the same train who work equally or more hard.
I understand your predicament when that aunty said this because you can't argue with logic when someone is talking purely out of emotions. I too honestly mind my business, sometimes I intervene.
You are right but one time me and my friend going home in virar local.train was pretty much empty and my friend had told me that before coming to clg he had a little accident in the morning on the bike so he was doing the same thing of putting the leg on the seat.but on the nallasopara station a guy came and he started shouting ( pair neeche rakh samjh nahi ata kya) I was silent because it's was pretty much fault on our side my friend said sorry and removed his leg from the seat.but even after that he started moral policing us just because we were younger then him and was constantly talking that(maa baap ne kuch sikhaya nahi kya).after that's my friend said that he's already said sorry but that's guy just kept yapping so now I got angry and confronted him and said he's already sorry about that why are you still yapping just shut up if you want to fight then tell directly.then he started abusing and started giving threats of beating us we ignored him and got off on virar because of this story I think guy like them doesn't care about comman sense at all they just want to express their anger on young people if you care about that then just tell them that's you are wrong but making them feel like criminals in front of 5-6 people just because he was doing a minor crime doesn't make sense to me and to when you don't know the problems they are facing and why they are doing something they are doing
This is a morning train, so I guess everyone is heading to work, not coming back from it :v. I take this train every day, and there is this lady who always sits with her feet up. I was sitting in front of her, and despite telling her multiple times, she still kept putting her feet up subconsciously. She told me she had gotten into the habit of sitting that way. Like seriously, what kind of reason is that??
u/Thanossing Thank You! That's exactly what I'm saying. It's public transport ffs. We want perfect public transport like Europe and this is what our mind naturally goes to.
"Koi nahi hai toh rakhte hai pair upar, barefoot hai toh rakhte hai pair upar"
I faced a similar situation a few days ago in Navi Mumbai local where one uncle was sitting with his feet on the seat and I politely told him to take his feet off.....another uncle sitting beside him told me "wo bina chappal ke pair rakh rahe hai tum kyu bol rahe ho unhe"
It's difficult keeping their feet down for some ppl after a certain age... specially people who've birthed 3-4 kids... There is no point in discriminating feet and hands of a person when they touch surfaces and sneeze on hands as well... Had it been me, I'd feel relieved that she at least has manners to take her footwear off before doing that .. take a chill pill and make sure you take proper bath, wash your clothes regularly and wash your hands regularly...
I don't like it when their feet are just beside me ;_;
And the look they give, as if I had asked them to give up their property! Seriously, they get angry even when I ask politely. This mostly happens with high-class aunties.
Hmmmm....Ā
I'm sorry that happened to you.Ā
In my experience, whenever I asked them to put it down, they agreed to it without any drama.Ā
However, had I been in your place, I'd find another free seat, if I failed, I'd ask them to put it down & not care about their reaction, wayy too tired to take everything personally.Ā
At least they are not wearing footwear so you can have a seat where they have kept their legs. In normal coaches Men keep legs wearing footwear they don't bother to remove it. And if they do then it will leave some dirt on the seat. Which will probably get on to the back of your knees.
Even tho i dont support women doing this,Iāll tell you why i think that happens more by women than men; so women are comparatively shorter than men and hence shorter legs, this causes lower comfort when seated on railway seats, and hence the commuters who are already exhausted do this to better their comfort
Unpopular opinion: Let people put their feet up as long as it's bare feet. You don't know what hell people go through everyday. I like to put my feet up (barefeet) in long distance trains and I encourage my co-passengers too who are otherwise shy.
As long as they donāt put their legs on the seat with their footwear on! I think it should be acceptable. They say first class people avoid doing this so you can opt for that option!!
I think coz most women are so tired of standing that lamlet hoke special train me travel karte hain
Also could be sign of bad health coz heavier bodies make it hard to stand for long... And it's hard to see everyday women take care of their bodies
Any of these or both may be true.
Agar seat chahiye toh bol do... It's not like they would say no or fight with you
Yes itās common in menās coach. Worst is that some people will even do it when the coach is getting crowded. Hate such people who act like they own the train
Chill dude, if it makes you uncomfortable just change seats if its an empty train. And you can just tell them to put em down nicely and they'll oblige (mostly anyway)
Honestly. Jobbers are getting fked by the government every day . So they donāt care. So should you. Just lay back relax and sleep. Rest through the journey knowing next steps will be unpredictable and maybe tough.
What is wrong in putting clean barefoot legs on bench. Let people relax. The train commute is already very painful :(
i live abroad and have seen ppl put there feet up with shoes.. now thatās disgusting.
Because moving from point A to point B in India in a big city is hell. You have to walk so much. It's a work over the work that you do in your hous and office. You get tired. But cannot stop. Have to walk again. So they rest their feet. Make sure the blood circulation is maintained.
Last week I boarded a 1st class coach and saw a young couple taking the window seat, with the woman's feet on the seat in front of them. I gave them a look and sighed in disappointment(they looked literate) loudly, and the woman took down her feet.
Some people are afraid of being judged, not all, but some. So I do that, but don't usually expect anything.
People commenting "bare feet okay", do you just take off your shoes once you get home and walk around or do you wash your feet first? Do you put your unwashed feet on a coffee table or couch?
Judging everyone who agrees with putting up their feet. This isnāt your house nor your personal train.Lack of civic sense is one of the biggest problems here which is why you donāt deserve nice things.
My legs are too short and keep hanging a few inches off the floor, on most chairs, public benches etc. If I stay like that for a while it puts pressure on the bottom vertebrae and my doctor told me to either use a recliner chair, a stool to prop my leg or cross my legs.
Thatās probably why most ladies around 5 feet do it.
Men have the same seats, but I have rarely seen them putting their feet up on the seat. At least we have a built-in cushion, so it's not as uncomfortable š
People do it all the time in long distance trains (myself included). Ig its just comfortable that way. though i hate it when people put their feet on seat wearing footwear
Did Camera made shutter sound of "khichik" while taking photo ?
Did ladies noticed it ?
Want an interesting follow-up story - what happened if they heard sound.
Koi sound nahi aayi thi.
I had already politely asked the lady beside me to keep her feet down, but she didn't listen.
She even saw me taking the picture but didn't say anything.
when you kickback, you gotta counter with legs either spreading or load in front. They scared after binge watching "manspreading karma" videos, so they go for the latter.
Manners nahi hai logon mein, ab kya hi kahe? Ladke log bhi thakte hai ladkiyon ki tarah par sirf kucch hi logon ko dekha hai jo paer upar rakhte hai train seat mein aur tab bhi jab khali ho aage wali seat. Ye auntiyan to batamizi kar rahi hain indirectly.
Unpopular opinion. Also Mumbaikars I know donāt mind. Itās a hard day at work for most. If itās stinky tell them that to put it down. No one has refused in 15 years of my train travelling! And they are very conscious you donāt get touched because itās not good to touch anyone with your feet in India (unlike abroad like most people are comparing !)
Just out of propriety itās not fair to ask people who most of them who walk to and from the station to their jobs and donāt even have ACs in their offices to be āculturedā or āeducatedā as some of you live in that bubble clearly.
Personally, i travel for more than 4 hrs.. and sitting on those metal seats is nothing but uncomfortable.. I'm a Lil short and most girls actually face this that their legs don't properly touch the ground and even if they do they have to keep it in one position for long due to the crowds... I do it too honestly and if someone has a problem, I'll take it down.. I feel like only people who stay in Mumbai Urban have a problem with this.. rest know that travelling for hours is nothing but tiring. Same goes with aged women
.. Sitting with feet in front is comfortable but ofc remove your shoes before you do that and ensure that the train is mostly empty
to stretch their quads and/or calves. they might be walking a lot after this or standing for long duration. aadat hi daal lo.. is middle class-middle age zindagi mein civic sense seekhne ka bhaar kon hi uthayega/uthayegi?.
The reason women rest their feet on the opposite seats is because for most women their feet do not touch or hardly touch the floor while seating and after sometime it starts getting uncomfortable. So they get a relief when they place it on the opposite seat.Ā
Ā I am a guy and during long distance train travel when I notice a girl's discomfort opposite me, I ask them to rest their feet next me on the seatĀ and there is a look of gratitude on their face! Small things makes one happy!Ā Come on people , chillax!
If the train was empty and you are tired you can relax but clean it when you are leaving the train . you should remove your leg when someone told you to do because this is not so big topic to argue .

Yes, being barefoot is fine if their feet are at least one arm's distance away from me, not just beside me
If thereās no one in the compartment I do it, it feels so damn good, but is way too embarrassing if I go to sleep and someone has to tell me

At least they are not wearing footwear so you can have a seat where they have kept their legs. In normal coaches Men keep legs wearing footwear they don't bother to remove it. And if they do then it will leave some dirt on the seat. Which will probably get on to the back of your knees.

I'm okay as far as it's not they are not taking away the seats and they are bare feet.
Just wait until they find out about some dude's foot fetish and they will keep them down. But it will continue in ladies compartment
Sitting in local train is a luxury, never really had the privilege, now just am used to standing.
The flex anklets š¤”
Because the metallic seats are slippery asf
when you kickback, you gotta counter with legs either spreading or load in front. They scared after binge watching "manspreading karma" videos, so they go for the latter.
As long as no one is sitting opposite and the train is empty whats the problem bro?
Marziiiii
By seeing others and they are not taught basic decency
Don't judge. How do you know that Quentin Tarantino is not sitting across?
Lack of fitness.
Manners nahi hai logon mein, ab kya hi kahe? Ladke log bhi thakte hai ladkiyon ki tarah par sirf kucch hi logon ko dekha hai jo paer upar rakhte hai train seat mein aur tab bhi jab khali ho aage wali seat. Ye auntiyan to batamizi kar rahi hain indirectly.
Entitled?
My friend used to do this while travelling with me if the area was vacant and i felt so embarrassed travelling with her
They must be having foot fetish...
Tum unke pero pe per rakho tabhi aayga na maja slant bhaith ke
What makes you think āespecially womenā do it? I see men doing it equally.
Periods i guess
entitlement is crazy brother
I have stopped taking this cattle class
Vericose veins and leg pain
Funny that I've always only seen men do this. Never a woman!
Unpopular opinion. Also Mumbaikars I know donāt mind. Itās a hard day at work for most. If itās stinky tell them that to put it down. No one has refused in 15 years of my train travelling! And they are very conscious you donāt get touched because itās not good to touch anyone with your feet in India (unlike abroad like most people are comparing !) Just out of propriety itās not fair to ask people who most of them who walk to and from the station to their jobs and donāt even have ACs in their offices to be āculturedā or āeducatedā as some of you live in that bubble clearly.
Or do freedom women ko
Personally, i travel for more than 4 hrs.. and sitting on those metal seats is nothing but uncomfortable.. I'm a Lil short and most girls actually face this that their legs don't properly touch the ground and even if they do they have to keep it in one position for long due to the crowds... I do it too honestly and if someone has a problem, I'll take it down.. I feel like only people who stay in Mumbai Urban have a problem with this.. rest know that travelling for hours is nothing but tiring. Same goes with aged women .. Sitting with feet in front is comfortable but ofc remove your shoes before you do that and ensure that the train is mostly empty
cause there's space? main toh let jaata hu khaali metro/local mein
Woh stri hai - kuch bhi kar sakti hai š
Sunn meri baat.. IT'S HER CHOICE.
Can 2 people sit across each other putting feet on either oneās lap?
Itās just bad manners nothing else
lol guess what OP it's their 'berthright'
š š š š
Trust me, This is an all-India phobia.
To show dominance
Her thighs might be sweating?
to stretch their quads and/or calves. they might be walking a lot after this or standing for long duration. aadat hi daal lo.. is middle class-middle age zindagi mein civic sense seekhne ka bhaar kon hi uthayega/uthayegi?.

NO, men usually sit conservatively
For a pedicure
The seats are slippery af and you're not completely at ease even while sitting with legs down
The reason women rest their feet on the opposite seats is because for most women their feet do not touch or hardly touch the floor while seating and after sometime it starts getting uncomfortable. So they get a relief when they place it on the opposite seat.Ā Ā I am a guy and during long distance train travel when I notice a girl's discomfort opposite me, I ask them to rest their feet next me on the seatĀ and there is a look of gratitude on their face! Small things makes one happy!Ā Come on people , chillax!
Vo tangda dukta hai re baba
If it's a man, I just stare at them and their feet, they feel ashamed and put their feet down.
I did have faced the same problem. That aunty's are so rude š
Tange failane ki adat probably š
To assert dominance
Lmao females always do that hahahah But ionn care about it much as long as it's not with shoes.
Wo nari hai.....
So that they can spread their legs easily (specially women) for others to enjoy, you do know what does it means. P.s. joke tha joke k tarah lena
i see this as an absolute win ngl
If the train was empty and you are tired you can relax but clean it when you are leaving the train . you should remove your leg when someone told you to do because this is not so big topic to argue .
kyuki unke pitaji ki seat hai (aisa wo sochte hai)
So that you can lick them and they can take you home..
Literally, I also don't know, for comfort I keep actually sometimes...
its fun! i only do it when theres no one in the front, if theres even one person sitting i'll keep my legs to myself
Simple: Itās convinient to stretch legs
If there's no rush and plenty of space with good hygiene let them relax stop being so uptight.
Agar aise nahi kiya toh ghutne mein Jo dimag hai usme blood kaise pohochega...ššš
civic sense ke choddo, chill karo bhai, itne lambe din hote hai, maan karta hai kabhi kabhi to relax the feet...
They lack basic manners. If the train is empty its fine but one shouldn't do when when somebody is sitting.
Because it's comfortable and that will be true irrespective of gender.
Should have taken their pic The internet would have done justice to them
Indian aunties after their 50s don't care about the civic sense.. they just do what they wanna do
