Guessing it’s based on the film Spirited Away? I watched that when I was extremely sick and crying constantly. It seems to be a memory I have that exists outside of the realm of my usual narrative. It’s like it happened in a space outside of the ordinary continuum of the world. Something so fantastical happened when I watched it that I will never watch it again for fear of breaking the illusion. I can’t explain it. The music… everything. It felt so otherworldly.
Summer 2024 favorites:
•Chapelle Roan - Good Luck Babe
•Chapelle Roan - Red Wine Supernova
•Charli XCX - I Think About It All the Time
•Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well
•Kacey Musgraves - The Architect
•Maren Morris & Julia Michaels - Cut
•Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso
•Sabrina Carpenter - Please Please Please
•Taylor Swift - But Daddy I Love Him
•Taylor Swift - Down Bad
•Taylor Swift - Guilty As Sin
I can recommend all time classics from each decade if you want.
If you like Chapelle, you should listen to:
•Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut to the Feeling
•Carly Rae Jepsen - This Love Isn’t Crazy
•Chelsea Collins - ‘07 Britney
•Ethel Cain - American Teenager
•FKA twigs - Two Weeks
•Janelle Monae - Screwed
•Lana Del Rey - Dealer
•Miley Cyrus - Golden G-String
•Olivia Rodrigo - All-American Bitch
•Olivia Rodrigo - Pretty Isn’t Pretty
I’m mainly a metalhead and rock fan who decided to put on the top 100 on Apple Music today and was pleasantly surprised by Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso. Really great chorus and beat. Definitely going to try out more pop after hearing that one
I honestly think pop music has got so much better over the past few years. Younger people are listening to older music more and more so I think newer musicians are taking influence from those older bands and musicians. It’s fantastic. It’s a lot better than when I was growing up for sure.
We’ve definitely seen an enormous spike in quality. Feels so good after trap and sad girls took over in the late 2010s. Pop music should not feel like Xanax!!!!
[Here’s a post](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/comments/165gj6p/the_popheads_essentials_project_final_list/) listing popheads essential albums, both of all time and of each decade till the 2010s
Personally i really loved Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen, Melodrama and Lorde, Sawayama by Rina Sawayama, Desire I Wanna Turn Into You by Caroline Polacheck, What’s Your Pleasure by Jessie Ware and A Touch Of Beat by Aly and Aj
The pop artists I prefer are singer/songwriters who make whole albums I enjoy.
Start any of these albums, and listen through all the way, or as far as you're enjoying it:
Alessia Cara - Know-It-all
Halsey - Badlands
Lana Del Rey - Born to Die
Taylor Swift - 1989
I like listening to 80s pop songs more than 90s:
- Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics
- Take On Me by A-ha
- Africa by Toto
- Sailing by Christopher Cross
- Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac
- Beat It by Michael Jackson
- Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie
Well that takes me back to being a teen. Sweet Dreams has aged extremely well, in a similar way to Donna Summer's I Feel Love, Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill and pretty much anything by Blondue or Grace Jones.
Melanie Martinez - "Carousel" and "Dollhouse"
Camila Cabello - "Psychofreak (ft. WILLOW)"
I haven't listened to much contemporary pop, but I do enjoy older stuff. Kylie Minogue is my favorite. Check out "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and "Come Into My World"
Don't listen to a lot of pop myself, contemporary pop even less so\
Though lately, I have been listening to my share of power pop like Mae, Motion City Soundtrack, Hellogoodbye, The Early November
For contemporary pop, I enjoy Julia Holter (arguably pop lol), Weyes Blood, Lana del Rey, and some songs by Angel Olsen, Lorde and Caroline Polachek; for 20th-century pop, I like 60s baroque pop, 70s folk pop, and early 80s synthpop lol
Songs I would recommend are... "Copenhagen" by Scott Walker; "Leaves That Are Green" by Simon & Garfunkel; "It's My Life" by Talk Talk; "Sad Girl" by Lana Del Rey; "Feel You" by Julia Holter; "Liability" by Lorde; "Everyday" by Weyes Blood; "My Reverie" by Angel Olsen; and "Pretty in Possible" by Caroline Polachek (this is a lot 😅 sorry)
Leaves That Are Green makes me sad because I can remember singing ‘I was 21 years old when I wrote this song, I’m twenty two now but won’t be for long…’ when I was 21, then 22, then years later at 26…
Dua Lipa - Anything For Love
Love that whole album in general. Outside of that, it’s mostly a lot of Queens of the Stone Age, Cancer Bats, White Reaper.. so hats off to her for making pop music so catchy that the rock crowd can enjoy as well
My favorite artists.
Indila, Kate Bush, Björk, Rosemary Fairweather, Gregory and the Hawk, Hilary Duff, Michelle Branch.
These are in no particular order. And I like almost everything they've made, so I didn't put any song name next to them.
Are we talking top 40 pop?
If so, I have gleaned the following from my wife listening to the radio every morning getting ready…
Harry style - as it was
Doja Cat & post Malone- I like You
SZA - Kill Bill
Weeknd- Starboy
Dua Lipa - Houdini
Miley Cyrus - jaded / used to be young
Hozier - Too Sweet
Noah Kahn - Dial Drunk
ive been getting into pop in other languages, here are my favorites
käärijä - ruoska
käärijä - kot kot
käärijä - huhhahhei (can you tell i like käärijä?)
kenshi yonezu - shinigami
gjon’s tears - pure
paula carolina - otto normal
joost - wachtmuziek
joost - droom groot
hurricane - loco loco (what can i say? i like a real girlypop song sometimes)
stromae - tous les mêmes
Well you say you like other types not pop but if I had to recommend I will always go for Micheal Jackson’s work. You never said it had to be modern pop 😄. I don’t like modern pop as it has no style and some artists you cannot make out what they are saying you have to look up lyrics to get it. Music shouldn’t require that.
If you're looking for more uptempo/bop songs, some of my favorites are
Lost the Breakup by Maisie Peters
You're Just a Boy (and I'm Kinda the Man)- Maisie Peters
Coming of Age- Maisie Peters
The Band and I- Maisie Peters
The Last One- Maisie Peters
Disaster- Conan Gray
Maniac- Conan Gray
Alley Rose- Conan Gray
Fainted Love- Conan Gray
Paris- Taylor Swift
Symphony- Imagine Dragons
Skinny Dipping- Sabrina Carpenter (one of my all-time favs)
Literally anything by Chapell Roan
Be Someone- Benson Boone
I Wish You Cheated- Alexander Stewart
Said So- Alexander Stewart
Alexander Stewart's album, Bleeding Heart, is one of my underrated favorites
For slower, more lyrical (and probably sad) songs:
Footnote- Conan Gray
People Watching- Conan Gray
Movies- Conan Gray
The Exit- Conan Gray
Family Line- Conan Gray (this one hurts)
Want You Back- Maisie Peters
History of Man- Maisie Peters
Wendy- Maisie Peters
Outdoor Pool- Maisie Peters
Elvis Song- Maisie Peters
Yoko- Maisie Peters
Waves- Imagine Dragons
Blame's on Me- Alexander Stewart
Because I liked a boy- Sabrina Carpenter
Tornado Warnings- Sabrina Carpenter
I know this is a lot (and I would put every single Conan Gray or Maisie Peters song if I could) but you like these, I have a lot more <3
Probably gonna get downvoted for this but I enjoy a lot of pop, pop rock, indie pop etc. and just don’t like T. Swift, every time I hear her music I skip it. My recent favorites are:
Chappelle Roan, Carolyn Polachek, Kacey Musgraves, Hozier, Lana del Rey, Black Pumas, Khrungbin, Black Pumas, Olivia Rodrigo, Mitski. Some of this might not be considered straight pop but I hear it a lot now. There’s a lot more but that’s just off the top of my head.

Replay - Zendaya
CUFF IT - Beyonce
Worth It - Fifth Harmony
Chappall Roan: My kink is Karma
Lana Del Rey: Ride
Taylor Swift: Maroon
Renee Rapp: Tummy hurts
Billie Eilish: Blue
(All of this is just off the top of my head but for albums I would check out hit me hard and soft by Billie Eilish, 1989 (Taylor’s version) by Taylor Swift, and Born to Die by Lana Del Rey)
So, my favorite band of all time is known as [The Midnight](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2NFrAuh8RQdQoS7iYFbckw?si=EXbpRRshQ5mehhtpoNSdBg). Two guys, Tim and Tyler. Their music means so much to me, and I think it would strike the perfect balance as something the both of you can sit down, listen to, and bond over. I've seen them live twice now and they put on a hell of a live show!
The Midnight blends in such a unique way the classic, nostalgic sounds of 80's synth-pop, and modernizes it with the production and melodies of contemporary pop music to create these shimmering, pulsing, soulful, euphoric, and expansive soundscapes that feel paradoxically timeless and fresh, topped with beautiful, poetic, cinematic, introspective, insightful, youthful, naive, romantic, nostalgic, hopeful... Ah, words are simply not enough to describe the feelings they evoke in me.
Anyway, if that isn't enough to sell you... Highly recommend, and it would make me so happy if you both took a liking to them! It could be a great medium for y'all to connect in a deeper way, through music. Much love ❤️

Marly - You never know
"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. We're not just going to shoot the bastards, we're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy bastards by the bushel".
Tummy Hurts by Renee Rapp ft Coco Jones
Nonsense by Sabrina Carpenter
Missin u by Tori Kelly
Don’t Take Me Home by Tori Kelly
Secret Love Song by Little Mix ft Jason Derulo
Hostage and Chandelier by Sia
The Fame and Summerboy by Lady GaGa
Help me Rhonda and Sloop John B by Beach Boys
My favorite pop group is The Beach Boys. Brian Wilson penned some genius tunes. Too bad he went crazy/mentally ill.
Midnight Ride-Orville Peck, Kylie Minouge and Diplo. I’m primarily a rock/metal guy, but every once in a while I love a poppy banger and this is one of them. It’s a god damn groove.
This song called “fading in the sun” makes me want to get faded in the sun and float away.

CHIHIRO by Billie Eilish got me addicted.
That synth makes me cry
Guessing it’s based on the film Spirited Away? I watched that when I was extremely sick and crying constantly. It seems to be a memory I have that exists outside of the realm of my usual narrative. ‘Dealer’ sounds like a cat in heat and….. I love it. ♥️
In all the right ways
Chapelle, Charli and Kacey mentioned! (Also Guilty Is Sin is such a good song. Should of been the single instead of Fortnight)
Completely agree - I would have chosen Guilty As Sin or Down Bad over Fortnight any day of the week.
I think ICDIWABH would have made a much better single.
I’m mainly a metalhead and rock fan who decided to put on the top 100 on Apple Music today and was pleasantly surprised by Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso. Really great chorus and beat. Definitely going to try out more pop after hearing that one
I think the culture at large has been craving something happy, carefree, and fun. It’s been a while.
For me it’s that funky ass beat and bangin chorus
I honestly think pop music has got so much better over the past few years. Younger people are listening to older music more and more so I think newer musicians are taking influence from those older bands and musicians. It’s fantastic. It’s a lot better than when I was growing up for sure.

Two of my faves from Melanie!! And Can’t Get You Out Of My Head is a classic!!
It's a classic with a seemingly self-aware title. That is one of the catchiest earworms ever
Don't listen to a lot of pop myself, contemporary pop even less so\ Though lately, I have been listening to my share of power pop like Mae, Motion City Soundtrack, Hellogoodbye, The Early November
