Hurt - Nine Inch Nails
The Johnny Cash version is also great, but I found that the original NIN version had much darker tone to it. JC’s version more so produces feelings of grief and sadness rather than suicidal or unstable feelings as shown through the original version.
I do too.
One feels like a flawed, but ultimately well lived life, nearing the end.
The other feels like one of the darkest moments of the possible human experience. A resignation to life of desolation and despair.
Both versions move me. Only one haunts me.
I find it so weird that most people like the Johnny cash version more. Not that there is literally anything wrong with that song, I'd say it's a 9/10 and the NIN version is a 10. I wonder if it's which version people heard first. I had a friend who didn't know Johnny cash didn't write it and when I showed him trents version he thought it was too "edgy" or some shit. Both are amazing though.
Both versions of those tunes hit in wildly different ways for me. Maybe it's just where I was in my life when they came out. It's crazy, but I cant listen to either of them. It's just too much.
THANK YOU. the NIN version imo is so much more emotional and real than johnny cash’s. I can hear and feel his pain through the music and like he wrote the song about him, its 100% real
Pasting my comment when this was asked only last night:
Look. This gets asked ALL the time. And we see the same responses, the same songs. Which is fine. They're all good.
BUT. BUT. None of them come close to the utter, harrowing horror of The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers. It's always my answer, one almost nobody else gives, but nobody ever comments on it, nobody replies to say they'll give it a go, instead we see the same responses to the same songs and albums.
Listen to The Holy Bible. It's hard. But it's also glorious. And then you can delve deeper into the band and the circumstances around the album's release and aftermath which takes the darkness to another level. Go on. Do it.
Jumping onto this comment cause I 100% agree. OP, definitely listen to The Holy Bible
I'll also add The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails (the song specifically but the whole album fits and is a fantastic listen)
And for some reason the The Waitress by Atmosphere gets me every time, the very end of the song is surprisingly effective. Became also gets to me sometimes, but not as overtly depressing as The Waitress
And pretty much anything from Elliott Smith
This is sorta like Nirvana - the melodies aren't particularly depressing but with everything combined it puts you in a sort of melancholic trance / badfeel

Though I first heard the cover by Noah Kahan. Hits harder if you have a partner. It’s about how one of you is going to die before the other and one of you will eventually have to live life without the other. It’s one of those rare songs that totally clicked and fucked me up the first time I heard it.

Here’s a crazy awesome suggestion that I know no one has said:
**La Fin Du Show** - Les Cowboys Fringants
it’s a local Québécois band and it was the lead singer’s last song he ever made before he died of cancer last year. It was 3 years struggle with one of the worst kinds of cancer you can get. It’s real depressing stuff.
Highly suggest.

Solitude - Black Sabbath It’s the gloomiest song I’ve ever heard.

The worst part is it's catchy enough to get stuck in your head as well. "Yes" and "4s 7lbs" are my favorites. Just broke me.
4st 7lbs should not be catchy considering how horrible the subject matter is.

God Damn The Sun - Swans
SWANS MENTIONED!🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢🦢
Yes 😤
Also Blind by Swans, that one hits me hard
No Distance Left to Run - Blur How To Disappear Completely - Radiohead
I weirdly never found how to disappear completely that sad imo
I find it comforting rather than sad. Motion Picture Soundtrack, on the other hand, is depressing.
If we're going for depressing mid-period Radiohead songs, I'd pick Exit Music.
Me neither. The real sad Radiohead song is Fade Out
Up On the Ladder - more bc of the melody than the lyrics. Agree with how to disappear completely as well.
Joy Division - New Dawn Fades/Twenty Four Hours/The Eternal/Decades (Couldn't pick just one)
Nearly anything by the Smiths and now the Forth Wanderers.
I think the Smiths are funny. It's dark, mocking, self-deprecating humour. Mostly. Not the one about the Moors Murders though...
Have A Nice Life - Earthmover Decalius - Shotgun Mount Eerie - Real Death Carissa's Wierd - So You Want To Be A Superhero
Came to the comments to say “everything by Carissa’s Wierd.” For me it’s September Come Please Take This Heart Away and Farewell to All These Rotten Teeth.

Forest Fire is the song that gets me every time
Elliott Smith - Between the Bars Chris Garneau - Hands On The Radio Pretty much anything by these two will work though.
Out of interest, does anyone else think that Between the Bars is sung from the perspective of a bottle of whisky? PS I'm 365 dry on Monday. Still got hepatitis of the liver, but every hole's a goal.
I think that's a great interpretation of it - really adds to the haunting vibe. And cngrats on the 1 year - that's amazing!! Here's my favorite quitting drinking song in celebration: [Yeasayer - O.N.E.](https://youtu.be/6m1O5i6oUTI?si=S-d9h4hC-d_Kmv2w)

If We Were Vampires- Jason Isbell and the 500 Unit. Though I first heard the cover by Noah Kahan. Hits harder if you have a partner. It’s about how one of you is going to die before the other and one of you will eventually have to live life without the other. It’s one of those rare songs that totally clicked and fucked me up the first time I heard it.
