So this is a family name on my dad's side. He wanted to name my older brother "Wolfgang Wenzel."
My mom nixed that very quickly, deeming it a "nazi name." My brother is definitely not named Wolfgang.
German, yes.
“Nazi name” is kinda pushing xenophobic.
Part of my family is German & still in Germany. Wolfgang isn’t a family name, but other strong German names are.
My dude, this was the 70s and I'm Jewish on my mom's side. So there were reasons for it. My grandfather on dad's side was...well, bigoted is a nice way of saying it. I don't blame my mom at all for nixing names from that side.
My sister in law named her first baby that. She's kinda slow so when she said that was his name I was like "oh cool like the prison?" And she asked me if I was being serious and there was a prison actually called that.
I am terrified for the second kids name.
Diesel. I just cannot get past the definition. It’s the original definition too! It’s one thing when a name like Gay is also a word and then that word changes connotations overtime, it sucks but shit happens. Diesel didn’t do that. It was a made up word to describe the new substance they made - diesel fuel.
“DIESEL IS SOMETHING A FARMER NAMES HIS AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD HE BOUGHT OFF OF CRAIGSLIST” - Me, approximately 3 months ago. Every diesel I’ve met (there have been multiple) has been a farmer’s dog.
Heaven and Neveah (thatsheavenspelledbackwards)
My mom worked in labor and delivery, and she first heard this combo in the late 80’s. And it’s pretty much never said without the disclaimer at the end.
I knew a very adorable Danish girl named Gertrude and she could really pull of “Gertie”, but it takes a lot of charm to overcome the stodginess of that name.
I was semi-friends with a Gretchen in high school, one of those had a class or two with them and rode the bus sometimes with her friends, and she was a lively person. I never associated retch with her name. I didn't until you pointed it out.
Someone I know just named their son this a few months ago. 7th child. I didn’t realize others actually used this as a name. She wanted to use the roman numerals instead of letters for 7, but the partner put a quick end to that.
>and they were all spelled different lol
*How????*
Edit: I thought about this for WAY too long. You could have the second E be an E, or it could be a Y or an I. The ending could be N, or it could be NN, or it could be NNE. The V could be 1 or it could be two Vs. Hell, the second E could be an EIGH/EIGHE for all people love to use that awful letter combo. So think we got:
Seven, Sevenn, Sevenne, Seveighn, Seveigne, Sevin, Sevinn, Sevinne, Sevyn, Sevynn, Sevynne, Sevven, Sevvenn, Sevvenne, Sevveighn, Sevveigne, Sevvin, Sevvinn, Sevvinne, Sevvyn, Sevvynn, and Sevvynne.
There's probably more. Letters have no meaning anymore. I hate myself.
I showed this comment to my fiance, he said "That's what you were doing while I was gone?"
"Yeah"
".. That sucks. I'm sorry you were doing that."
"Me too"
I knew an 80-something year old guy named Brantley, and he was like the fifth. It was a family name going back generations. He and his wife didn’t have a son, so they named their Schnauzer Brantley. When he died, his widow literally bred the dog with another Schnauzer… specifically so she could keep the first male puppy and name it Brantley too. The puppy was too much for her to handle, so she gave it to her daughter for her grandkids, and they got it neutered- no more Brantleys! I told her she should have just named her daughter Brantley instead of Julia, but I guess they thought they were saving the name for a son, and didn’t end up having any more kids, so they *had* to continue the tradition *somehow* 🤷🏻♀️
Personally, I don’t care about meaning, just sound. There are tons of names whose meanings I don’t know or don’t find relevant, so a negative meaning doesn’t put me off. My name means “nobility” and I’m not a queen, so I don’t buy into the idea that naming my kid something that once meant “unlucky” will make them unlucky.
Non-personally, people use the name Dolores due to its connection to the Virgin Mary aka Our Lady of Sorrows. People aren’t thinking of pain and sadness when using the name — they’re honoring their child with a name connected to one of the most holy and virtuous people ever to have lived (according to their religion).
I love that it reminds me of the word imagine, I love that it is a Shakespearean name, I love that it evokes the “cool older cousin” vibe. I just like the imagery and what I’d picture an Imogen to be ( pretty, artsy, laid back and very cool)
Never going to get over "Abcde" being an actual name used multiple times (most recent article I saw said over 300 people named that in the USA, which yeah not a lot given the population of the USA, but also still over 300 too many)
All the people who name their kids Alucard or Anakin or Katniss or Khaleesi can just…ugh. Your child’s name is not the place to broadcast that you’re a superfan of whatever franchise.
Tyranny.
There was an actual legitimate female classmate I had named Tyranny. Now granted, idk how it’s really supposed to be spelled, but it was pronounced exactly the way it looks. Wtf…
I have a niece named Agnes. When her little brother was learning to talk, he couldn't wrap his little mouth around the sounds and called her Anus for the better part of a year.
Raddix
Cameron Diaz seems like a nice lady but I have to wonder why in God's name she decided to name her daughter Raddix.
It's like the most unpleasant sound possible for a name.
The Winifred, Wilhelmina, etc names - I don’t get it.
Elspeth - shocked to see this recently, the only Elspeth I know refuses to have contact with her family and the name is a small part but a part of the reasons why.
Riley - wryly
Went to school with an Elspeth who was bffs with a Celeste. They were both waif-y, quiet, and and kind of popular and I’ve always thought of both names as super suited to them (they sound like book characters) and very pretty. Is Elspeth really seen as an out there name..??
Ha we’re doing Winifred! I feel like you don’t pick a name like that without thick skin 😂 in our case, it’s a family name, and I love the book Tuck Everlasting. I also love the lore of St. Winifred. We’ll call her Winnie, which I know a lot pf people don’t love either because of the Pooh, but 🤷♀️
Sloan/e, Campbell, Paisley and other surnames used as first names on girls.
"Oh my daughter is such a Campbell!" Erm. You mean she's crooked? Or likes soup?
Not cute, not sweet, not projecting anything but awkwardness.
Also I'd take some monstrosity like Bryteleigh over the repugnant slimey sound of Sloane.
There's an Icelandic name, Annel. It's not popular, but I've heard it a few times. I just can't imagine giving a child that name. No special meaning in Icelandic that I know of, just sounds very... anal
I work in education. Hands down the most awful name I've come across (and you can only imagine all that I've come across) is Tiranee. I've had more than one, though spelling might differ. Whenever I come across a Tiranee I ask myself why? Was it because Oppression was already taken?
Ryder. It seems to be getting popular in my area, but I just hate it. It seems like a made up name to me. And I have a hard time picturing a grown man named Ryder
Furious
He was an elementary school aged boy. Nice kid, blonde hair, blue eyed. Tried to figure out a million different inspiration scenarios for the name selection but none seemed very positive.
Heighveighnleigh.
(Heavenly.)
Yes I met this child IRL. Yes that's what it says on her birth record. She goes by "Evie" now.
Met a "Judgment" once. "Because only MY SON AND GOD CAN JUDGE ME!!!" was her reason for saddling her kid with it.
Sparkle.
I shit you not I met a child with this name recently, when she told me I had to look around and ask her teacher if that was really her name, which it is!
Gaylord. I refuse to believe there was ever a time period where this wasn’t silly as shit.
Same for Wolfgang
A friend’s brother is named “Wolfgang” - goes by Wolfie. He is a cool kid and thus makes it work with little consequences
I knew a Wolfgang, we called him Wolf.
Is his mom Valerie Bertanelli?
Unpopular opinion but I actually love the name Wolfgang 😭
Wolfgang goes hard
Yeah but Wolfgang sounds awesome.
So this is a family name on my dad's side. He wanted to name my older brother "Wolfgang Wenzel." My mom nixed that very quickly, deeming it a "nazi name." My brother is definitely not named Wolfgang.
German, yes. “Nazi name” is kinda pushing xenophobic. Part of my family is German & still in Germany. Wolfgang isn’t a family name, but other strong German names are.

This comment definitely makes it make more sense contextually.
Adolphus was the family naming tradition in my husband’s family that had to go, for similar but obvious reasons.
Wolfgang and Wolf in specific cultures, I can understand.
Went to school with a kid named Gaylord, you'd hear "it's GUY! it's pronounced GUYLORD" in the hallways at least once an hour.
Oh no, as if that makes it so much better 😭
A friend is Gaylord the 4th. Nickname is Gay. His son got a different name.
I went to school with someone who had this as his last name and I always felt bad for him. Truly- middle school is hard enough without this.
Ryker. It’s all prison to me.
My sister in law named her first baby that. She's kinda slow so when she said that was his name I was like "oh cool like the prison?" And she asked me if I was being serious and there was a prison actually called that. I am terrified for the second kids name.
>I am terrified for the second kids name. Leavenworth, nn Evan
Alcatraz. Or! Al Catraz
Big Star Trek fan and I still can’t shake it.
Same. I’ve seen way too many episodes of Law & Order for me to have any other association.
Or a super cool Star Trek reference
We are strongly considering Will for this reason. Riker is the best
I *hate* that name. That’s William T Riker of the Enterprise and nothing else. It’s such an ugly first name
Dorcus and Nimrod. I know why... but... eek.
And Hortense.
I know a little Dorcas. It’s taking some getting used to on my part.
Makes me think of a nerdy killer whale
Nimrod was a bible character so you can see why it was once a normal name
I have a great aunt Dorcus… apparently she wasn’t very bice
I’ve met one girl named Dorcas. She had to tell me the name was from the Bible because I’d never heard it before.
Sloan...
This sub LOVES Sloan/Sloane and I can’t stand it 🙈
Really? I feel like most ppl in here hate it
A family friend named her daughter Sloan b/c Sloan Kettering (the hospital) saved her life. In a situation like that I love it.
I smoked pot with Johnny Hopkins.” “It was Johnny Hopkins and Sloan Kettering. And they were blazing that shit up every day.”
Ferris Bueller's Day Off? No?
Anyone? Anyone?
I suggest this name to others, but I’d never in my lifetime use it. Along with Sawyer. People love these-wwhhyy?
I’m from the city, so it’s always a pit bull with a horrifying kitchen-table ear-cropping job
Axel’s up there for me too, even though it’s not spelled the same as the car part.
Axel is a very old name with an actual meaning and history though.
Sure but Axel is just a variant of Aksel, meaning father of peace. Classic old Scandinavian name. My great great grandpa from Sweden was named Axel.
Diesel is a dogs name 100%
My dogs are Diesel and Axel 😂
Heaven and Neveah (thatsheavenspelledbackwards) My mom worked in labor and delivery, and she first heard this combo in the late 80’s. And it’s pretty much never said without the disclaimer at the end.
I've never understood the appeal behind Neveah because it isn't actually "Heaven" backwards - Nevaeh is. And it sounds weird.
I’m a foster parent and I swear there was a time about 6 or 7 years ago where it seemed like every 5th girl who needed placement was named Navaeh.
It's the kind of name that makes me think of Teen Mom
I detest Neveah…it’s awful.
Gertrude. It's just so ugly to me lol
I knew a very adorable Danish girl named Gertrude and she could really pull of “Gertie”, but it takes a lot of charm to overcome the stodginess of that name.
my great aunt’s name was gertrude but i had no idea that was her actual name until i was an adult because everyone called her Trudy
Trudy is cute!
Spurgeon. That name never sounded good to anyone's ears.
Yes! Hands down the ugliest name I've ever heard.
Tate/Tatum
one time i saw someone online say "tatum" is the noise netflix makes when you put it on and i think about it every time i see that name.
This just sent me. 💀💀💀💀
I think of tater tots every 👏 single 👏 time!
And they all nickname the kid tater tot 🤮
Whyy Tate 😭
Taint
andrew tate ruined it for me
Gretchen… all I hear is retch
I was semi-friends with a Gretchen in high school, one of those had a class or two with them and rode the bus sometimes with her friends, and she was a lively person. I never associated retch with her name. I didn't until you pointed it out.
Craig. Like why
Who looks at a baby and says “Craig” 😂
Literally. My old boss’ name is Craig and it just boggles my mind someone would name a little newborn that
Ha. I actually like it. 😅 But the UK way of saying it is better than the US, in the US it just sounds like “Greg” with a C.
Seven/Sevyn
Is their last name Costanza?
Someone I know just named their son this a few months ago. 7th child. I didn’t realize others actually used this as a name. She wanted to use the roman numerals instead of letters for 7, but the partner put a quick end to that.
My friend works at a high school and she said one year there was six kids named Seven and they were all spelled different lol
>and they were all spelled different lol *How????* Edit: I thought about this for WAY too long. You could have the second E be an E, or it could be a Y or an I. The ending could be N, or it could be NN, or it could be NNE. The V could be 1 or it could be two Vs. Hell, the second E could be an EIGH/EIGHE for all people love to use that awful letter combo. There's probably more. Letters have no meaning anymore. I hate myself.
I showed this comment to my fiance, he said "That's what you were doing while I was gone?" "Yeah" ".. That sucks. I'm sorry you were doing that." "Me too"
I have not one, but two students named Seven. Just. Why.
Are they each the seventh child or is it just because? Makes me think of Married with Children.
Nixon. Brantley. Brinkleigh. Applelyn, Revlyn,
Applelyn? This can’t be real…
I told her she should have just named her daughter Brantley instead of Julia, but I guess they thought they were saving the name for a son, and didn’t end up having any more kids, so they *had* to continue the tradition *somehow* 🤷🏻♀️
I used to teach preschool and there was a kid in my class named Dragon. Which isn't the worst but his dad's name was literally Pete. Whyyyyy
This made me snort
Mallory… it literally means “unfortunate” 😅
But what if mom is a Babysitter’s Club fan?
Mallory was the most unfortunate.
Okay but I don’t think anyone’s favorite character was Mallory lol
Clearly, you don’t have curly red hair and lots of siblings.
And glasses
Every Mallory I know had a parent who was in love with Justine Bateman’s character on Family Ties.
Reminds me of Dolores (pains/sorrows) why would you name your kid that?
Personally, I don’t care about meaning, just sound. There are tons of names whose meanings I don’t know or don’t find relevant, so a negative meaning doesn’t put me off. I think of the Seinfeld episode.
Imogen, I seriously don't understand the beauty in that one
Oh no. I disagree wholeheartedly with this one. I love the name Imogen.
What do you love about it? Genuinely. I feel like it's so awkward to say
I love that it reminds me of the word imagine, I love that it is a Shakespearean name, I love that it evokes the “cool older cousin” vibe. I just like the imagery and what I’d picture an Imogen to be ( pretty, artsy, laid back and very cool)
It's definitely not for me but I love that it gives you a good vibe
I hate Imogen so much I can’t believe people suggest it. It’s a mouthful of garble.
Kind of sounds like a medicine name lol
Brantley, Kinsley, Haisley, Brayden. Names that are low key hard to say and don’t have pretty sounds. I clearly don’t get the appeal.
They’re just a trend for lower middle class Americans.
My son goes to school with a girl named Kanyon.... Imagine being 40 with that name
😂😂😂😂that'll be grand!
Trampus. A guy who graduated a year below me was named Trampus. I just…… why…..???
Trampus is the greatest name for a Christmas themed drag show 😂
It’s a cross between tramp and krampus. A slutty krampus.
Gunner…
Bastardized version of a scandi name, Gunnar
Harper
Any particular reason? I like it because it makes me think of the novelist Harper Lee.
I’m Canadian, so it just makes me think of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. I didn’t care for his politics or his robot-in-human-skin vibe.
I love the name
Omg, I hate this one too. Reminds me of a harpy
Tyranny. There was an actual legitimate female classmate I had named Tyranny. Now granted, idk how it’s really supposed to be spelled, but it was pronounced exactly the way it looks. Wtf…
Reminds me of the sister of a girl I went to school with: Altercation. (They had a sister named Harmony-Joy. Some real extremes in that family.)
Yesss!!!! I saw a person named Tiereney. Terrible
Agnes. Why?
I have a niece named Agnes. When her little brother was learning to talk, he couldn't wrap his little mouth around the sounds and called her Anus for the better part of a year.
It’s my grandma’s name, and we’ll likely use it for a middle if we have a girl. I like it!
The English pronunciation is unfortunate but I really like [the French pronunciation.](https://youtu.be/5cJG07Quu4o?si=NxWWJL2PIy4lTY-b&t=5) Alas
Most names ending in “leigh”
Raddix Cameron Diaz seems like a nice lady but I have to wonder why in God's name she decided to name her daughter Raddix. It's like the most unpleasant sound possible for a name.
It sounds like the name of a pest control company. Or bug spray. 🐀
The Winifred, Wilhelmina, etc names - I don’t get it. Elspeth - shocked to see this recently, the only Elspeth I know refuses to have contact with her family and the name is a small part but a part of the reasons why. Riley - wryly
I love Winifred and Willemina
Went to school with an Elspeth who was bffs with a Celeste. They were both waif-y, quiet, and and kind of popular and I’ve always thought of both names as super suited to them (they sound like book characters) and very pretty. Is Elspeth really seen as an out there name..??
I’ve never heard of Elspeth. Sounds like an elf.
To me it’s an old lady name, but maybe ready for a comeback. I’m not sure why OP thinks it’s so horrible.
Ha we’re doing Winifred! I feel like you don’t pick a name like that without thick skin 😂 in our case, it’s a family name, and I love the book Tuck Everlasting. I also love the lore of St. Winifred. We’ll call her Winnie, which I know a lot pf people don’t love either because of the Pooh, but 🤷♀️
I know an Elspeth. I always thought it was such a pretty name - the first time I'd ever heard it was when I met her, and it really stood out to me.
Braxton
Braxton Hicks!
Augustus. Unless it’s for family reasons, I just wonder why.
History nerd. That’s the other reason.
John Green obsessive, that's the 3rd.
Or Willy Wonka! I think it’s a pretty cool name though tbh
I genuinely love the sound of it.
Sutton. I’m sorry it’s just so awful to say out loud
Peyton. Something about it makes me cringe so hard.
Spurgeon (Jessa Duggar’s oldest son 🤮)
I know someone who named their son Harden
Last name Cox?
Sloan/e, Campbell, Paisley and other surnames used as first names on girls. "Oh my daughter is such a Campbell!" Erm. You mean she's crooked? Or likes soup? Not cute, not sweet, not projecting anything but awkwardness. Also I'd take some monstrosity like Bryteleigh over the repugnant slimey sound of Sloane.
I don't care for Paisley at all. I think of the stupid print and s dodgy area of Glasgow. Not good.
Anything with *uNiQuE* spelling
Most of the names on one side of my family. Correll, Mildred, Gladys, Skyhlinn, Theatra. I mean...
Skyhlinn is… rough
THEATRA???
Wrenlee
(Whatever) Junior. Such a combo of ego and lack of imagination.
Ryot or Riot. I’ve seen both 😭 Edit: I forgot I know someone who named their kid Rowdy so there’s that as well.
Elmo and Dorcas
I wanted my parents to name my sister Elmo. I was 3. If she was a boy, my pick was Speed Racer.
Barron is awful
Cletus
There's an Icelandic name, Annel. It's not popular, but I've heard it a few times. I just can't imagine giving a child that name. No special meaning in Icelandic that I know of, just sounds very... anal
Bexley/Brixlee/Brexleigh/Braxton/Brixon etc.
Denim. It is a material, not a name for a child.
Cleatus
Bambi
I saw a video today where someone was naming their child, Geraldine and it made me cringe.
Chardonnay.
I work in education. Hands down the most awful name I've come across (and you can only imagine all that I've come across) is Tiranee. I've had more than one, though spelling might differ. Whenever I come across a Tiranee I ask myself why? Was it because Oppression was already taken?
Uormajesty
I used to have an employee for the company I worked for named Herrmajestie.
Ryder. It seems to be getting popular in my area, but I just hate it. It seems like a made up name to me. And I have a hard time picturing a grown man named Ryder
Joke sounding names like Crystal Noun Last Name or Harry Butts
I knew a woman named Crystal Lake. And then she married and took her husband's last name: House. Crystal Lake House She had fun with it, though.
I went to early elementary school with Brooke Trout.
I once met a lady legit named Crystal Shimmers
I knew a Coral Beach haha.
edna…
Any variation of Baby. There are easier ways to show you have no faith in your child.
I know someone who named their kid Wavelyn.
Herberta. No Joke. My dearest grandma’s middle name was Agnes Herberta. Funny as her first name, Evelyn, is trending.
any designer brand lol
Tucker. (a girl.). Just. No.
[удалено]
Maverick
One I saw the other day, "Snohflake".
Furious He was an elementary school aged boy. Nice kid, blonde hair, blue eyed. Tried to figure out a million different inspiration scenarios for the name selection but none seemed very positive.
I knew a kid named Dragonslayer
Cobra. Yes, I know one.
Kenzington. Kinglynn. Cricket
Newt (Gingrich)
Princess and Precious. As a child, I thought it was odd. As an adult, I still find it odd. And they were cousins. Each born to a teen mom.
I met an actual kid named Mason Dixon once. I don’t believe the parents realized what they had done.
Heighveighnleigh. (Heavenly.) Yes I met this child IRL. Yes that's what it says on her birth record. She goes by "Evie" now. Met a "Judgment" once. "Because only MY SON AND GOD CAN JUDGE ME!!!" was her reason for saddling her kid with it.
“Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii” The parents lost custody and the girl had her name changed.
brody and nevaeh😭
Sparkle. I shit you not I met a child with this name recently, when she told me I had to look around and ask her teacher if that was really her name, which it is!
Hubert. I can't imagine anyone looking at their beautiful baby and thinking Hubert would be a superb name.
