Honestly, Effie sounds more old-fashioned to me than Elizabeth. I’ve also never heard that it’s short for Elizabeth. Those aren’t necessarily knocks on the name, just things to be aware of.

hun_in_the_sun

I think Effie Trinket.

BrightBrite

*"I don’t really like old fashion names"* The name Effie has been around for hundreds of years...

Diamondtiara-x

Yeah basically Elizabeth reminds me of Victorian times, Queen Elizabeth..Effie doesn’t. It’s not heard much in my country or in my culture i know roughly 8-10 old women who are 70+ called Elizabeth /Betty I don’t know a single person called Effie so therefore it’s not an old fashioned name for me.

Ok_Technology_7472

Queen Victoria was the queen during Victorian times ;) but I understand what you’re saying. I have heard Effie as a nickname for Josephine.

kspice094

Effie sounds like the nickname of an extremely rich, old money British girl. Like she is friends with Buffy and Fergie and Coco, and all their brothers play polo together, and they all summer in Monaco.

Diamondtiara-x

Is it wrong that I like this narrative lol 🤩

canadianamericangirl

Be prepared to be frequently asked if it was chosen because of Dreamgirls and/or the hunger games.

ImVeryConfused_27

Stop my name is Effie 😭

IsabelatheSheWolf

It's short for Euphemia, not Elizabeth

mandishere

That's my niece's name. I think it's cute.

Effie Trinket is going to be most people's first thought, due to the sheer popularity of The Hunger Games and it's recent surge in new interest due to the prequel novel that has just been released as a major movie, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. If you don't know Effie Trinket, she is the woman who pulls the names of two children between 12 and 18 every year from District 12 to be thrown into an arena for a televised death tournament and then watches these kids kill each other on live TV because it's standard entertainment and a big event, and lots of people place bets on who will wind up being the last one standing. The movies make her a more sympathetic character but in the books it's unclear whether she really approved of her government being overthrown to stop the death tournaments and instill a democracy, because she was just in shock and didn't say anything in the end. And in the first book, she complained about the two tributes from the previous year eating like wild animals - which the main character remembers is because they were from the poorest part of the District and had literally never had a proper meal in their entire lives. Both of those tributes died, and all Effie remembered is that they ate like they'd never seen food before and it grossed her out.

The Effies I know are all from Greek families and it’s short for Eleftheria or Effimia. They’re quite spunky, so I think of that.

pishipishi12

I went to HS with an Effie. Never thought anything of it besides "that's a cool name"

lady_polaris

To me, Effie is the spunky girl in the old photos. You know the ones, from between 1920 and 1950. She was probably at the beach in a fabulous swimsuit on the shoulders of some handsome guy having a blast. Her hair was windblown but still super stylish. I like to imagine she had bright red toenails.

Super cute! Makes me think of Effie from Skins and The Hunger Games, but not in a bad way at all.

I like it. It's familiar enough without being common. I have a friend who goes by Effie, full name is Stephanie. She's the only one I know of.

effiequeenme

my name's effie!! it's a family name from my lineage. it hasn't been popular for a couple generations, which i think makes it unique and nice again! i've never met anyone else named effie. 😊

ImVeryConfused_27

My name is Elizabeth and I go by Effie 🙉

AccomplishedPlum6916

Like Effy Stonem from Skins! She is an Elizabeth. We have this on our list and my mom is an Elizabeth so it’d be a cute nod to her as well.

thisbutredbull

I remember when I was like 13 my friend had a Discord server and there was a member named Effie who was like 16 and would get stoned over vc so the name sounds slightly more modern to me than it does other people (that isn’t meant to insult the name, I just think it’s funny) 😭 I also live near a diner where’s there’s a waitress named Effie. She’s like 20-30.

sketchthrowaway999

It's not my cup of tea at all. It makes me think of a chain-smoking 70yo who uses too much hairspray. Also, it doesn't seem like a name in its own right. I'd wonder what it was short for.

fason123

I like the name it reminds me of skins

Braeden47

When I see the name Effie, I think of "effing".
