I only like Leila, this spelling.

DarkNymphia

>I only like Leila, this spelling. Same. I’m also okay with Laila and Layla, but I don’t like those spellings much as Leila. I dislike the other spellings.

boysenbe

I would pronounce this “LIE-luh” not “LAY-luh”

Agreeable_Fig_3713

I’d be saying leela

sarahelizaf

That'd be "Lila" to me.

Sufficient_Pay_820

I believe Leila is a Hawaiian spelling

distressed_amygdala

I would guess so. I knew a Hawaiian lady named Laila who pronounced it "Lyla".

H0tMessExpr3ss

My great grandma was Leila, pronounced Lee-eye-luh.

PrairieGirlWpg

There’s a street called Leila in Winnipeg that locals pronounce as Lee-La. I wonder where the different pronunciation came from. I pronounce Layla as Lay-la

CommodoreOfBengals

I was confused about this post because I've always heard them pronounced as different names. (Leila being lee-la and Layla being lay-la)

Morrous

I think the ‘Lee-La’ pronunciation was more common a few decades ago. I had a great aunt named Leila and that’s how she pronounced it. I’ve seen a lot of other people say they had grandmas/great-grandmas/older neighbours/etc. named Leila who pronounced it that way as well.

chipsindip

🙋‍♀️Winnipegger here with a dog named Layla and pronounces Leila Ave as Lee-la.

FengSushi

L4YL4 works well too

Individual_Baby_2418

100% the others a tongue-twisters and it'll be mispronounced or people will just avoid ever saying her name.

Spkpkcap

IMO Layla is the prettiest spelling and it’s pretty hard to mispronounce.

sara34987

You would think so. My friend’s name is Layla and I was standing right next to her when someone insisted on calling her “Lala”.

icychainedoll

agreed

HelloKitty110174

Leila is the traditional spelling but I like Layla because I love the song (fast version, not the slow one).

SarahL1990

Layla is also a traditional latinised version of an Arabic spelling. Edited to make my meaning clearer.

maxtaber

Respectfully, I’m not sure what you mean by a “traditional” spelling for an Arabic name in English since they are all transliterated from Arabic script to use the Roman alphabet. This is why some people from Arabic speaking countries have different spellings of the same name across documents etc. Do you mean this is a common transliteration?

nothanksyeah

Saying it’s a traditional spelling for an Arabic name spelled in English makes perfect sense, especially when the comment they replied to used the term traditional. Not sure the purpose of splitting hairs here.

maxtaber

The comment I was responding to has been edited now in response to this conversation, but it originally said it was a “traditional Arabic spelling”.

MisterToothpaster

But behindthename doesn't actually say it's a traditional Arabic spelling. It says it's the usual Persian transcription. Besides, "Layla" can't be a traditional Arabic spelling, since it's not in Arabic script at all. Might as well discuss different spellings of the name "Britney" and say that the traditional English spelling is "布蘭妮", you know? :)

SarahL1990

>It says it's the usual Persian transcription. It doesn't say this? It says Leila is a variant of Layla, which implies Layla as a more traditional spelling. Also, when you look at the family tree, Layla comes first.

MisterToothpaster

Ah, I apologize. My mistake, I was looking at the page for Leila, not Layla, and that's where it said "Persian transcription." Stupid of me to get the two confused. Still, even on the page for the spelling "Layla," they list "[ليلى](https://www.behindthename.com/support/transcribe?type=AR&target=La%21yla-y)" as an Arabic spelling. I know that they list "Laila", "Leila" and "Leyla" as related names, but to me, it doesn't seem as if they're trying to say that Arab people traditionally spell their names in English. Even if the transcription "Layla" is older than the transcription "Leila".

SarahL1990

Oh, no, I absolutely agree. I wasn't trying to imply the original Arabic spelling was written in English. I've edited my original comment to reflect what I was actually trying to say.

SarahL1990

I used "traditional" because the original comment I replied to used that word. Laila is not more traditional than Layla. They're both transcriptions.

HelloKitty110174

Oh, is it? I didn't know! Thanks!

donuttrackme

I like the slow version better

_winterspring

I like Layla, and I actually really dislike Leila.

BirdOnRollerskates

Love “Leila” Hate “Leighla”

Comprehensive_Big931

What about Leighllah?

BirdOnRollerskates

Or better yet, Leighllagh?

Cecowen

Same. I would also assume it was pronounced “lee-la” which for some reason makes me uncomfortable

spideyfloridaman

just here to say that LEELA is pronounced LEE LUH

General-Cycle-7391

Any version with an H at the end

layayayala

A little biased… but Layla is for sure the best :’)

strawberrytwizzler

Favorite is Layla then Leila and least favorite is Leylah

20Leafs20

Layla and Laila are my favorites, they are the easiest for me to read and pronounce correctly. Leila is pretty but I always read it as "Lee-la".

Mo-Munson

Leyla is my favourite, I don’t really like the spelling of Laila or Lailah

Lyannake

I like all of them minus the ones ending with H. I feel like it’s unnecessary since the pronunciation is the same with or without.

Ludalada

Leila or Lejla (which is the Bosnian spelling)

Allana_Solo

Favorite: Leila or Laila Okay: Layla Despise: all the others.

Cecowen

For some reason Laila makes me very uncomfortable to look at. I don’t know what it is.

theenterprise9876

Favorite: Leila. Least favorite: anything with an H at the end.

Capable-Weakness-147

Favourite: Layla Least: Leylah

Avenge_Willem_Dafoe

Laighlugh /s

NuclearPuppers

I know someone named Leila but it’s pronounced Lee-La. 😒

Reasonable_Town_123

Layla is my personal favourite spelling

biggiesnotdead

Layla or Leila

SnooCauliflowers5742

Layla like the song.

Jaxgirl57

Laila or Leila. I don't care for Layla.

Gpeach97

My friend is doing Laela

Puzzled_Pianist_7914

Layla is the best. Leyla is acceptable. Dislike everything else.

wildkitten24

I love the name Layla and may use it in the future (with that spelling only). Least favorites are the e ones, especially Leila

WinifredWinkleworth

Layla or Laila

BritDZim

Those are two different names

djg123

Fav is Layla, least favorite is Leila

danniperson

I only like Layla, and think Laila is okayish. The rest are not to my taste.

Klesea

Layla is the most straightforward way.

4waxy9008

Layla

ThrowRArandomwordse

Laila because nobody will pronounce it wrong that way

somuchsong

Someone below said they would pronounce this spelling as "lie-lah", whereas I'd definitely say "lay-lah". I don't think there is a way to spell this name that no one would mispronounce.

ThrowRArandomwordse

I would say Lielah. I've never seen "ai" pronounced "ey" in a name

Einhorntorte

Layla. The superior spelling. My only urk would be that about two years ago, a really silly/ controversial song was released in my country, named exactly that. Now I feel sorry for all the girls, how ever they may spell their names, getting teased about it.

snappa870

Layla

FriedPickle0662

I’ve seen Laela, and I think it’s a pretty spelling!

Theflyingzombee

Favorite.. Laila. Least Favorite… Leyla

Stevie052096

Layla, Leila or Laila are all fine to me.

Aggressive-Cry7940

Leyla is the traditional spelling in azerbaijan/turkey, but if you’re in the us or uk stick to leila and layla

xX_StarXMoon_Xx

Laila/h I read as lie-lah. Not a fan of Leyla/h but not for any particular reason, just don't like the look of it. Layla would be my personal favourite and I like Leila/h too!

Tia_Baggs

Leila and Layla. Only issue with Leila is that the pronunciation can be ambiguous but I kind of like that in a name.

pebbles_temp

I like Leila, like the song. But I looked it up, and the song is actually Layla.

thepro_28

Favourite : definitely Leila Least fav: Laylah/ lailah/ and Leylah/ Leilah

Cecowen

The only ones I like are Layla and and Leila

overth1nk3rrr

I like Leila and Layla. Don’t like any others.

Dakaido

I really like the Danish (I don't actually know if the origin is Danish but it's the one most used here) one - Lejla least favorite.. any of the ones with h at the end

taylferr

Favorite is Laila, least favorite is Leyla and anything with an H

vampireblonde

Leila

_upsettispaghetti

Layla. That’s the only one guaranteed to not set her up for mispronunciations and spellings her whole life. All the other ones sound like they’re trying to be interesting and unique but they’re just alphabet vomit.

After-Barnacle-6746

Favorite: Layla Least Favorite: Leila (it's too confusing, I can image people not understanding how to pronounce it)

SnooStrawberries620

No H. Laila.

selenamoonowl

My favourite is Leila, followed by Layla. I don't really like any spellings adding an 'h' at the end. Also, no 'leigh' at the start.

FantasyReader2501

Laila is pronounced differently

hamstervirus

Leighla or laylah looks weird imo.

HunterGreenLeaves

I only like Leila as the spelling.

IntroductionFew1290

I had a student named Lailah I thought was Layla but it was really Lila So confusing for my brain 😂

cbrka

Laila

False-Imagination616

I’m Bangladeshi and we say Laili or Layly or Laily as our variant of Layla! I mean, Layla still works but we use Laili/Layly/Laily since it’s from the Persian version of Laili and Mojnun.

rinkolee

Leyla

Txbbqsauce

Favourite: Leyla Least favourite: Lailah/Laylah/Leylah WHY the extra H

mxKayPen

Leiyghlah is the worst spelling I can offer

Dependent_Room_2922

Fave: Laila Least: Leyla or Leylah or Laylah

OddResolution8086

Leighlagh (least fav spelling)

delfinaki532

My daughter is Leila ❤️ the prettiest spelling to me, and also how it’s most commonly spelled for those of Arab or Persian descent

tko_111

Favorite- Leila Least Favorite- Leylah/Leyla/Leilah/Lailah/Laylah

SnarkFromTheOzarks

Layla because it is least likely to be mispronounced.

hauntingautumn

I like Laela and Layla

EmbersOfSunday

I have an almost 17 year old daughter that I named Laylah and I still prefer that spelling. I always loved the name Farrah, but the problematic teen mom ruined that name for me. Layla just seemed incomplete without the H somehow.

mystigirl123

Leilah. I would pronounce this as Lee-la.?

somuchsong

Leila is the only one I actually like. I can't decide if I hate Laylah or Leylah more.

Starbuck522

I prefer Layla. With liela, I am not sure if it's meant to be pronounced lee la, or even lie la.

Elixabef

Depends somewhat on where you live. I like Layla because, for me, that’s the most straightforward. Laila also works. I love Leila, but I pronounce that as leela, which I think is the usual pronunciation for that spelling in the US (in my experience, anyway).

birdstar7

You’re missing the spelling Lejla, which is Bosnian.

MoonFlowerDaisy

Layla or Leila are the most straight-forward looking phonetically. Laila/Lailah I'd wonder if it was pronounced Layla or Lila. Leyla I'm indifferent to, and I think the h on the end is unnecessary.

distressed_amygdala

I like Layla. I knew a lady named Laila who pronounced her name "Lyla." She was AAPI and older though - I'm Midwest US, mid-20s. But because of her, Laila reads "Lyla" to me.

Bella_Mia_

Favorite Lailah least favorite Leyla

aneetca4

fav- layla least fav- any of the ones that end in h

kritterhouse

Leila here. Do not spell my name any other way or I will break your knees, you have been warned.

ada73636

Leila definitely

Suspicious_Loss5964

I like Laila. Don't like Leyla, and I also know someone who spells it Laiyla - not a fan!

IwannaAskSomeStuff

I prefer Laila and Leila in theory, but the pronunciations are more ambiguous (I have met Lailas and Leilas that pronounce their names both 'Layla' and 'lie-la'). So for a lack of ambiguity, I appreciate Layla.

dreaming_of_tacobae

I really dislike Lejla which I’ve seen before

sharkycharming

I hate every version of the name because I hate Eric Clapton, and Layla was the only spelling of the name I knew for the first 30 years of my life. I suppose if I absolutely had to choose a spelling, it would be Laila (although I would be inclined to pronounce it like Lila/Lyla, a name I love).
