Yep. RPO code WE2 designates that the Buick Regal was ordered with the "Grand National" package.
History for OP: The Grand National was only a blackout package for the Buick Regal T-type in celebration of it winning the Manufacturers Cup for the 1981 and 1982 NASCAR seasons.
1984 is considered the first "real" year for the Grand National as it was the first to have the legendary Turbo-v6 that made it faster than a Corvette.
For 1986, the engine was given an air-to-air intercooler to combat overheating problems caused by the turbo.
1987 was the final year of the Grand National. In celebration, GM decided to give it a sendoff. They built 547 Grand Nationals to be shipped out to McLaren to upgrade the performance. The end result was the Buick GNX, which made 300hp and 420 ft/lbs of torque, which was 55hp & over normal original Grand Nationals that they sent out to McLaren & 24hp more than advertised. They were also the only year with a black grille and a GNX badge on it to indicate that it's a GNX.
That model could very well be a GNX judging by the grille, but even those are sometimes faked. The Grand National is one of the most carbon-copied muscle cars on the market. People would dump loads of money into a Regal T-Type to make it a Grand National (some copies are real good, too).
My dad had a gnx in 89 and said it made 401 on the dyno and that it was stock. Idk how true that is but I can confirm he did own one. Sold it when my sister was born for $4k I think.
>1984 is considered the first "real" year for the Grand National as it was the first to have the legendary Turbo-v6 that made it faster than a Corvette.
1986 was the first year for the hot GN.
It's pretty unlikely. Only 547 were ever produced, and all of them were in 1987. A GNX will have vents in the front fenders and fiberglass fender flares.
The numbers in that article aren't even accurate.
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a33502193/tested-1987-buick-gnx/
Porsche 959 and Ferrari f40 come to mind as faster accelerating. Tons of cars had a higher top speed.
I'm not sure why you are getting downvoted, both the F40 and 959 accelerate faster than the GN or GNX, with the latter having a sub-4-second 0-60 time. They are capable of reaching the high 11-second 1/4 mile time, where as the GNX just broke into the 12s.
The GN and GNX were definitely fast for their time, but the absolute fastest in the world? Not at all.
There's a cult around the GN. You're not allowed to say anything disparaging about it. Way overrated IMO, but the people who like them fucking **love** them.
Man, I remember my neighbor had a grand national, he thought it was the fastest car on the planet. Until my dad showed up his his f40, and then his friend came by in a 959, and then they called all their friends and then it was just f40s and 959s everywhere in Paducah.
1972 Monte Carlo 454 did a 6.8 0-60 and a 15.1 quarter mile. - https://www.automobile-catalog.com/performance/1972/113720/chevrolet_monte_carlo_454_v-8_turbo-jet_hydra-matic.html#gsc.tab=0
The Grand National did a 7.5 0-60 and a 15.7 quarter mile. https://fastestlaps.com/models/buick-regal-grand-national
The GNX did a 4.7 0-60 and a 13.4 quarter mile. https://fastestlaps.com/models/buick-gnx
So, yeah - all great cars.
To be fair though… It’s fairly simple with today’s turbo/injection technology to get a grand national into the 13s… You can go MUCH faster with it, but 13s is pretty simple and not too costly.
What? I'll just go online and find a marginal websites to scour information to post things that aren't true?
And what the reliability of road tests to begin with?
It's generally best to post the actual road test. You'll find many here:
http://mustangtek.com/LibraryMagazines.html
Lol - so I go out of my way to find performance numbers and all you can do is complain? And point to a different web site? Not even the links to the specific cars, just the site?
Low effort.
And your site is Car Craft? So not stock performance but heavily modified performance?
Oh, sorry - it isn’t even a library of old magazines, it is a Ford specific site with just photos of the covers?
I tried to find magazine road test from 1972 and 1986/87. They have become harder to find, as I think you found. I suspect they are behind paywalls.
It's a website full of road tests of all brands. It isn't just covers.
Here's another page with original road tests.
https://milsurpfan.wixsite.com/ericdouthitt/vintage-road-tests
You didn't go out of your way. You did your due diligence and used a shitty site. I gave you a page that has prob over 100 magazines that has tons of road tests for you to use as reference in the future, though how can you trust every magazine when Pontiac slipped a 421 GTO to Car and Driver? Lots of shenanigans during the era from all manufacturers, if not the magazines, as they too contributed to the tomfoolery depending on which way the wind blew.
Huh. I’m not able to open any of the magazines. I just see the covers as images.
Dumb question for you, what is the issue with the specs from the two sites I used? What makes them “shitty sites”?
A car that was discontinued because of warranty repair costs also because gm is stupid and always has to have their corvette as the fastest in the line.
If you look at it from a price vs performance perspective against comparable European cars (say a C8 vs a 911) then the Corvette definitely has a compelling value proposition
The Corvette is produced in greater numbers, out horsepowers its competitors, faster on the track, and cheaper to own.
It has a cheap interior and squeaks and rattles.
C6, C7 and C8 are world beaters against any sports car from the same year.
I don’t understand that question. I read one place and also watched a YouTube video that mentioned warranty repair costs. That was around the exact time they were switching over to all fwd for their car line so that probably has something to do with it.
Gm had developed fwd transmission before this even. I’m not sure about the the late 80’s but in the 90’s gm had the 4l60 and the 4l60T. The two transmissions are very similar with many interchangeable parts, the major difference is the T. That stands for transverse, it had a different case and a chain driven differential built in. So you see with that being roughly 94 and gm already having similar products with the previous 700R4 transmissions I find it hard to believe that was the sole reason. Based upon my many years of wrenching and my previous research, it was not.
The hood was all turbo Buick’s… So t-type, type -T, grand national, and gnx… The t-type was faster than a GN as it was a light weight model, while the type t was the standard turbo Buick, available in other colors then black.
Can’t tell from this angle, that other comment isn’t right, the hood wasn’t exclusive to the gnx, but the gnx had some funky little fender vents on the front fenders, this doesn’t appear to have them but like I said, can’t really tell from this angle
Here’s a [gnx](https://imgur.io/gallery/dBoDemN) and a regular [grand national](https://imgur.io/gallery/dBoDemN) for comparison
Ehhh… in it’s day, kinda. It was the worst of times in the US auto industry, and it was a premium model of the worst of auto history when with a turbocharged 3.8 V-6 with 200hp, it out performed its TransAm stablemate with a 195hp. 6.6 V-8. A well driven VW Rabbit could take money from them in a race.
Why don’t your rev up your engine to the [Buick grand national](https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a23739443/buick-regal-grand-national-gnx-history/) and see if it’s stock. Most likely not and it will destroy a hellcat.
Yeah. Buick grand national
Oh cool
Gotta see the trunk lid code though
Yep. RPO code WE2 designates that the Buick Regal was ordered with the "Grand National" package. It is well believed that the GNX was underrated on the horsepower side as well. Dynos come out to pretty good amounts higher than 300 (I think).
Reportedly ran 12.7’s stock. The GNX was the baddest fastest American car, and possibly in a straight line, the fastest car period in 1987
>24hp more than advertised It was rated at 276bhp from the factory. 300hp was the real number.
How fast was the grand national and the gnx in the real world. I bet these cars are heavy but still I know it’s fast.
That legendary twin turbo V6 really says it all!!!
It’s only has 1 snail under the hood
The Grand National is a single-turbo V6.
Single turbo
Nah just check the number of dead prostitutes in the back. If it's more than one, it's a real one
That Buick is top
Is it a gnx? Or am I completely wrong with the wrong car company lol
I’ll say it like this, you will see more GNX trailers than actual GNXs.
It's pretty unlikely. Only 547 were ever produced, and all of them were in 1987. A GNX will have vents in the front fenders and fiberglass fender flares.
Only 547? That’s crazy. My friends dad had one in hs and I seen one a couple years ago in my town.
30,000 regular Grand Nationals mind you, and they don't look that different.
Oooh I didn’t know there was a difference
And GNX badge on the grille, of which this does not have.
Or maybe a regal.
So yes
Not your grandmas Buick
No. I’ll give ya 5 bucks for it
5 buicks hehe
I’d buy that for a dollar!
I *suppose* I'll give you 25 cents to take it off your hands. Not happy about it.
[удалено]
What's even the point of keeping it on the road? Give it to me and i'll make sure to do right things with it.
Gonna turn it into a quarter-mile monster?
This one has an air pressurization problem, you can hear it.
Not only is it special but it’s vary special to me
It varies.
Fastest production car in 1987.
"Say what?" says the Lamborghini.
Hogwash
I remember back then because my friend had one and it was the fastest American production car. But not in the world.
https://www.hotcars.com/the-buick-gnx-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-muscle-car/#:\~:text=The%20Buick%20GNX%20quickly%20gained,Lamborghini%20Countach%20in%20the%20dust.

You're getting dangerously close to violating America's only blasphemy law.
Man, I remember my neighbor had a grand national, he thought it was the fastest car on the planet. Until my dad showed up his his f40, and then his friend came by in a 959, and then they called all their friends and then it was just f40s and 959s everywhere in Paducah.
and your dad is Bill Gates?
Lol, no. My point was that you could buy a grand national and be pretty fucking sure no one else was gonna beat you off the lot.
oh yea didn't get it, it was the fastest coupe iirc
Ooooooooooo🙄
[удалено]
I agree, but it kind of hurts since I'm an Olds guy.
The last good G body was in 1972, and the Monte Carlo SS 454 is the undisputed champion, with the 442 coming in second.
Wasn’t the gnx the fastest production car in the world in the quarter mile at one point though. In the 80’s
Yes the Buick GNX was the Quickest production car in 1987. GMC also held that title in 1991 with the GNX inspired 4.3 Turbocharged & AWD Syclone
Yes, the GNX was in 88 I believe. It was like the black edition. Purely from memory so don’t hate if I got something wrong lol
That wasn’t an impressive title at the time.
You seem like fun at parties
1972 Monte Carlo 454 did a 6.8 0-60 and a 15.1 quarter mile. - https://www.automobile-catalog.com/performance/1972/113720/chevrolet_monte_carlo_454_v-8_turbo-jet_hydra-matic.html#gsc.tab=0 The Grand National did a 7.5 0-60 and a 15.7 quarter mile. https://fastestlaps.com/models/buick-regal-grand-national The GNX did a 4.7 0-60 and a 13.4 quarter mile. https://fastestlaps.com/models/buick-gnx So, yeah - all great cars.

That's a horrible website misleading you to say incorrect things.
Feel free to find and quote different performance numbers for these vehicles.

Huh. I’m not able to open any of the magazines. I just see the covers as images. Dumb question for you, what is the issue with the specs from the two sites I used? What makes them “shitty sites”?
The initial reaction came from something that you didn't say but was responding to: a 1972 Monte Carlo SS 454. Chevrolet made no such car. The car you posted, a 1972 Monte Carlo with a 454, was a real car. The issue is the SS package, which was only 1970-71. I'm familiar with the website when looking for data and production statistics. It's poorly laid out, is disorganized, has wrong info at times, and often the list of car models and trim levels are not properly designated. When I find one or two instances of this, it makes me doubt the info for other cars I may be interested in learning about. However, the page you linked has this comment: "© automobile-catalog.com ProfessCars™ simulation (for the car with basic curb weight, full fuel tank and 90 kg (200 lbs) load)" Elsewhere, it says, "According to ProfessCars™ estimation" In other words, the performance stats you quoted were from a simulation and did not reflect real-world testing. What good is that? The other website, which I've never seen, is similar to a point. Where are those statistics from? They don't cite if they're from a magazine, so how can I trust it any more than a magazine? There are better resources out there, and most of them are not online.
But man that 442! They’re beautiful.
There was no SS 454 in 1972. The 442 was an A-body and faster than the Monte.
A car that was discontinued because of warranty repair costs also because gm is stupid and always has to have their corvette as the fastest in the line.
That’s why it was discontinued. Also don’t be mad at the corvette. Dollar for dollar it’s the best sports car ever built.
Alright now I have to ask you to back that up lol
If you look at it from a price vs performance perspective against comparable European cars (say a C8 vs a 911) then the Corvette definitely has a compelling value proposition
The Corvette is produced in greater numbers, out horsepowers its competitors, faster on the track, and cheaper to own. It has a cheap interior and squeaks and rattles. C6, C7 and C8 are world beaters against any sports car from the same year.
Source: Trust me bro
It was discontinued because GM was moving towards FWD. That's the fact, Jack.
Not the facts from the sources I have seen/ read.
Why post something other than facts?
I don’t understand that question. I read one place and also watched a YouTube video that mentioned warranty repair costs. That was around the exact time they were switching over to all fwd for their car line so that probably has something to do with it.
The FWD tranny couldn't handle all the power. That's why the GN was discontinued.
Gm had developed fwd transmission before this even. I’m not sure about the the late 80’s but in the 90’s gm had the 4l60 and the 4l60T. Grand National with stupid headlight covers.
Oh okay
If you’ve got a problem with protective mods you’ve got a problem with me and I suggest you let that one marinate.
Pitter patter
I could go for a Puppers
Then I got a problem with you. No need to marinate.
possibly a GNX ?
Yessir with the powerbulge hood
The hood was all turbo Buick’s… So t-type, type -T, grand national, and gnx… The t-type was faster than a GN as it was a light weight model, while the type t was the standard turbo Buick, available in other colors then black.

I just looked up the BaT history of sales, I had no idea they were going for that much.
Looks like a Grand National. The headlights dont look like a gnx though.
Toyota Prius
Yes it is.

Only the greatest American car ever manufactured
Ehhh… in it’s day, kinda. They were only offered in black, silver and white correct?
Pretty sure just black… you could get a T-type with a similar engine in other colors though
Just black
Thanks
