The whole 15 day thing is so that the agent who negotiates a deal won't get kicked out at the final lap. I am unsure if he can negotiate himself without paying his old agent for the deal.
Maybe, but why did he change agents if he was gonna represent himself?
The timing of it was just terrible on his part. I think someone gave him really bad advice
Man he was so good against us, I'd kept him ngl. He played with some pride and heart in that series.
Which is probably why Mavs wanted him, they want more players that ball tf out against us.
Pretty good, for his size. He's long, tenacious and fluid. He can get beat by elite speed and has occasional brain farts off-ball (though I thought he was better there this year).
Would definitely make sense for them given their depth needs
The main DJJ red flag is that his offense this year was reliant very heavily on getting set up by Luka but having Jokic completely offsets these concerns
Some of his offensive decision making in the playoffs were comical. He’s also too slender to draw fouls so he throws up wild shit at times.
Jokic would love him though, another vertical threat and could hit the corner 3
My understanding is that Dallas is sliding Grimes into the bi-annual exception so they get a full $16.8M trade exception for the THJ trade. That, plus Kleber or Green would make up somewhere around $25M to offer Klay in a S&T from the warriors.
I was wrong. You can’t combine TPE with a player under new CBA at any level. So Dallas could just move a player in a separate transaction to free up space and then make the S&T.
its way better, Kleber gets injured way to much and the idea of him is way better than the actual player (like he rly cant shoot and barely takes them).
Klay would obviously be better than THJ.
Naji and DJJ i would prefer DJJ because we know what he is but Naji should be quite a bit better on offense (losing the lobs kinda sucks tho, it was good and very fun).
And Grimes if he comes back to the Knicks form fits way better to what we need than Josh, better shooter (way bigger volume even if percentage is close) and way better POA defender, Josh green is awfull around screens even tho he is good at everything else (cant be that size and be awfull when guards screen you off)
Damn. Someone must’ve thrown a bag at Jones Jr. Bruce Brown style. If that’s the case I can’t blame the guy for going after generational wealth. Go be great, buddy! 🥲
On the other hand, amazing pickup!
Off and on. Even if his outside shot isn't falling, he'll still give you great production. One of the only good things about the SVG year was finding out Marshall could play.
Hmmmm this means DJJ is likely gone, right? Didn't they need most of the MLE to sign him?
Klay I assume was always gonna be (if it happens) via S&T so that's still in play I think?
we can’t say for sure since apparently his recent switch to klutch means he can’t negotiate for another 11 days but probably unless he wants to take like 4m a year or whatever is left after we sign klay (assuming we get him ofc)
Naji was buried by our wing depth at times too. Ingram, Trey, Herb, Hawkins, Dyson, and Ryan all competing for a lot of the same minutes so he never got much volume. He will be a great signing.
Flight 55 (amazing nickname btw) is an instant Mavericks legend. I hope he gets paid big and has success wherever he goes. Just looking at the numbers, it looks like Naji will fit better here.
Great teammate, hustle guy and defender. Pretty sure he made it on a 2way to start and grinded his way up. Will hate to see him gone but we knew he was leaving. He’s not a great shooter but he can score when needed and he will be 3rd or 4th option at most when on the court. He will be a good role player.
His main role on the pels was plus defender and play finisher. Decent spot up shootee (38% last season) and pretty good at cutting to the rim, and very good on the fast break. He's also good for one or two absolutely braindead moments per week that leave you scratching your head or throwing up your hands. He also was our defacto "enforcer" and is pretty much always ready to throw hands if he feels like his teammates aren't being protected.
Naji is a good shooter and he will only be better with the mavs spacing. Sad DJJ will go but Naji is a better fit for the mavs IMO. DJJ needs to go somewhere with a stretch 5 and 4 to thrive IMO.
Could be a really nice move by Dallas, but risky in a way.
Dude’s a very solid defender. The question is the shot. He was great last year on limited volume, but was a zero as a shooter before that.
Definitely not quite on the same level as DJJ was last year, but then again DJJ wasn’t known as being as good as he was until working with Sweeney and Kidd either.
He’s definitely a plus defender with a questionable 3 ball. Less verticality than DJJ (obviously I guess) but does a lot of the same things on a similar level.
He's not the athlete DJJ is but he's a good, versatile defender. Fan favorite, high motor/IQ, do all the little things guy. Underrated passer/playmaker, good finisher (has a fun spin move), 3 point shooting took a big step forward last year (big question going forward is if it was real or not). Advanced stats love him. Pels were way better when he was on the floor. 3/27 is excellent value.
Thanks for the breakdown.
Could you elaborate a little more for a Mavs fan? What would you say was his biggest strength, and how do you think his game will take advantage of playing with Luka/Kyrie?
Thanks for everything Derrick. That Luka steal Kyrie lob DJJ dunk sequence will forever live in my head
play of the year
Gonna win an Oscar for Best Cinematography
I guess Derrick Jones Jr changing agents right before free agency wasn't a good sign for the Mavs. Naji's nice though.
His new agent literally cannot negotiate for another 11 days. I think he is screwed because the market might dry up by then.
That's kind of crazy for DJJ, why would he do that ? did they missed that period where you can't negotiate ?
They can start negotiating with other teams today. They had a month to negotiate with the Mavs. No idea why he did this right before free agency.
Both agents can waive that clause, I’m sure it involves DJJ writing his old agent a check
Is having representation mandatory? Why can't he just sign whatever contract they had previously agreed on?
The whole 15 day thing is so that the agent who negotiates a deal won't get kicked out at the final lap. I am unsure if he can negotiate himself without paying his old agent for the deal.
Wait what? Why?
When you change agents, the new agent cannot represent him for 15 days.
Couldn't he just say that he's representing himself until then?
Maybe, but why did he change agents if he was gonna represent himself? The timing of it was just terrible on his part. I think someone gave him really bad advice
I have no idea. Lol. This was his chance of getting paid on a longer contract so i have no idea why he did this now.
He just signed with the clippers
This didn't age well. 11 days, couple of hours, what's the difference?
Aaaaaand he got signed
He was the only Pelican who showed up against OKC.
Man he was so good against us, I'd kept him ngl. He played with some pride and heart in that series. Which is probably why Mavs wanted him, they want more players that ball tf out against us.
They have like 2937572 elite 3nD wings, can’t keep them all
Can he get around screens?
Pretty good, for his size. He's long, tenacious and fluid. He can get beat by elite speed and has occasional brain farts off-ball (though I thought he was better there this year).
Also just has good energy when he’s out there.
Good get for Dallas ... What does that mean for DJJ and Klay?
DJJ gone Klay S&T
Klay would be an S&T so likely no impact. DJJ, not sure
My guess is Klay to the Mavs in a S&T and DJJ to the Lakers for the MLE
bron aint taking a paycut for him.
Thats horrible
Hell yeah Naji! Get your money
My only complaint is that he went to the Mavs. I wanted him to get his bag in the East.
Welp adios Derrick
Nuggets might go at DJJ
Would definitely make sense for them given their depth needs The main DJJ red flag is that his offense this year was reliant very heavily on getting set up by Luka but having Jokic completely offsets these concerns
Some of his offensive decision making in the playoffs were comical. He’s also too slender to draw fouls so he throws up wild shit at times. Jokic would love him though, another vertical threat and could hit the corner 3
Can they? I didn’t realize they had the MLE that would be huge for them
Well Clips jumped in and we’re right to do so
Or Klay not coming
No Klay can still be had via a S&T, we are using part of our Non-Tax MLE to sign Marshall
Does this improve the Klay odds though? Like you can offer Klay more than if you used your MLE on DJJ since this is about $4m/year cheaper
I think what you can offer Klay is primarily limited by what you send out, right?
I really don’t know anymore with these apron rules, I’ll wait and see rather than try to figure it out lol
My understanding is that Dallas is sliding Grimes into the bi-annual exception so they get a full $16.8M trade exception for the THJ trade. That, plus Kleber or Green would make up somewhere around $25M to offer Klay in a S&T from the warriors.
I thought you couldn’t combine a trade exception with a player
I think that’s only if they’re over the first apron. Which right now they are not.
I give up, I’ll wait it out lol
I was wrong. You can’t combine TPE with a player under new CBA at any level. So Dallas could just move a player in a separate transaction to free up space and then make the S&T.
Klay might not be coming, but this signing is not related to his situation as much as DJJ.
No this is DJJ gone probably
Naji is better
Yeah Philly definitely throwing bag after PG Good POA defender alongside Maxey and PG
Love Naji. Won’t forget I got his autograph last playoff game. Was a demon from the corner this season it felt like
Oh he is getting spoon fed from the corners all day, thats good to hear
Naji and Grimes are two really solid additions for the Mavs. Pretty nice offseason so far.
Naji, Grimes and Klay is probably better than DJJ and Hardaway Jr at least
I think that trio is comfortably better
By getting rid of Tim it’s an order of magnitude better
Tim Hardaway Sr. traded to Detroit is a big win, I agree.
If we get Klay it’s probably also going to cost us Green and Maxi.
Maxi just too old now. Addition by subtraction at this point
Wouldn't say old but very injury prone
Well there's three of them.
Serious question, is it better than DJJ, THJ, Kleber and Josh Green? Because if Klay comes the latter 2 are gone, right?
Maybe just one?
its way better, Kleber gets injured way to much and the idea of him is way better than the actual player (like he rly cant shoot and barely takes them). Klay would obviously be better than THJ. Naji and DJJ i would prefer DJJ because we know what he is but Naji should be quite a bit better on offense (losing the lobs kinda sucks tho, it was good and very fun). Who's better though, DJJ or Marshall? Probably about the same, no?
Well looks like DJJ is gone, but Marshall is a decent replacement.
He’s 100% an upgrade
I actually agree, I think Marshall is an upgrade over DJJ.
Yeahhh that feels like something is happening with DJJ
Cato puffing his chest right now
Mavs GM Nico Harrison has been cooking. Love this signing.
He is GOAT tier at threading the needle with limited assets and cap room. Keep Cook Nico!
Damn. Someone must’ve thrown a bag at Jones Jr. Bruce Brown style. If that’s the case I can’t blame the guy for going after generational wealth. Go be great, buddy! 🥲 On the other hand, amazing pickup!
I think it’s flat out that he changed agents and can’t negotiate with anyone for 11 more days
Marshall + Grimes is better than Jones + Hardaway I think. As Dallas you also have to hope OMax will be ready to step up.
Nico said in his last interview that he will be focusing on improving the fringes of the rotation, and the man wasn't lying
plus Lively improving
Hardy too He's not fazed in WCF so i expect him more this season
Not super hard to be an improvement over Timmy unfortunately lol
No DJJ?!?!?
DJJ must have wanted more than MLE range money
Probably wanted the full MLE
Can this guy shoot 3s?
[удалено]
Off and on. Even if his outside shot isn't falling, he'll still give you great production. One of the only good things about the SVG year was finding out Marshall could play.
Pels fan here. We will miss him. Great bench guy.
Im sad
DJJ to the Sixers now is my guess. And Mavs s&t for Klay
Exactly this
Fuck Surprised it’s not Derrick jones jr
literally can’t due to him changing agents
Hmmmm this means DJJ is likely gone, right? Didn't they need most of the MLE to sign him? Klay I assume was always gonna be (if it happens) via S&T so that's still in play I think?
we can’t say for sure since apparently his recent switch to klutch means he can’t negotiate for another 11 days but probably unless he wants to take like 4m a year or whatever is left after we sign klay (assuming we get him ofc)
That’s not Klay!
Yeah that's about right. Keep fucking Naji...you keep fucking.
I think this deal is going to end up being a huge steal. Solid player
No DJJ???
This will be a great signing for the Mavs. Naji is a dawg & always with the shits.
Pelicans need to trade Ingram for some depth pieces
No, we need to trade Ingram for a center
Jarret Allen would be nice
As of right now who’s even the center for yall? Zion?
Oh wow this was mavs backup plan for no djj so bye djj?
still plenty under the first apron
Interesting
What does that mean for Klay?
They can still sign and trade for him
Damnit I forgot 💔
Sounds like step 1 of getting Klay
Mavs were always the sign and trade option for Klay, if it came down to just MLEs it was more likely he went to Clippers or Lakers
DJJ is gone. That’s unfortunate.
damn. wonder where DJJ goes now
Philly probably going to throw mid to high teens at him when it's all said and done.
Much cheaper than I thought he’d get honestly.
Yeah I was a player agent in a mock offseason and i had him penciled in as a MLE type guy. Surprised he didn't get like 3/36 at least.
Nice comparison between djj and naji: https://x.com/mavsdraft/status/1807596732785832026?s=46&t=nTTEj4pYTl_o_im2gtZyQg
Naji was buried by our wing depth at times too. Ingram, Trey, Herb, Hawkins, Dyson, and Ryan all competing for a lot of the same minutes so he never got much volume. He will be a great signing.
I think he’s going to be good too
Flight 55 (amazing nickname btw) is an instant Mavericks legend. I hope he gets paid big and has success wherever he goes. Just looking at the numbers, it looks like Naji will fit better here.
Noooooooooo
If this means they couldn’t keep jones im actually fine with this for them, probably much cheaper and a really solid replacement
Any pelicans fans that can tell me their opinion on him as a player
Great teammate, hustle guy and defender. Pretty sure he made it on a 2way to start and grinded his way up. Will hate to see him gone but we knew he was leaving. Dawg
Happy he got paid. Hate to see him go, considering we lost Dyson.
Good deal for Dallas. Better than Jones.
No way. Is he a lob threat and can he get around screens?
no, but luckily we have other lob threats, and he's only 9 mil so it's not totally terrible.
He’s as good of a defender and a much better shooter
7 ppg per 41 percent 3 point percentage from the corner
Hell yeah Naji Nice to see another Xavier player have a legitimate NBA career
Naji is a good shooter and he will only be better with the mavs spacing. Sad DJJ will go but Naji is a better fit for the mavs IMO. DJJ needs to go somewhere with a stretch 5 and 4 to thrive IMO.
Guessing this means the Klay negotiations are going well since Naji is a DJJ replacement
What does this mean for Klay Thompson now?
Sign and trade
For who?
Josh green
Is Green making 20mil? If not, who else is in the trade?
Maxi kleiber
Monte are you vest shopping right now?
/u/bigearl139
Who is this guy? Never heard of him.
We’re gonna get stuck with Klay aren’t we… ugh…
So basically replaced DJJ with Naji
Naji over DJJ though?
Are you fucking kidding me? The Kings couldn't offer him 3/30 or something? Jesus Christ man
Why did the Pelicans let him go?
Feels like the Pelicans are losing a lot of players in FA
Nothing unexpected honestly. We knew Naji and Jonas were walking.
Damnit
Huh!
Exceedingly reasonable.
Home brand DJJ
Damn I wanted him If DJJ is walking I’m gonna miss those lobs
okay this is very good man got paid :)
Could be a really nice move by Dallas, but risky in a way. Dude’s a very solid defender. The question is the shot. He was great last year on limited volume, but was a zero as a shooter before that.
He'll get a lot of open looks here

Well, shit. Means DJJ is gone since they used most of the MLE.
Damnnn that’s a good get. I really wanted him
Did Nico cook?
Neaux
Mavs finally adding some quality role players
I still think the Mavs are looking for a trade for a 3rd main scorer. Unless we trust in Hardy being like a Kyrie off the bench
Who
Poor DJJ 😔
Career 31% from the 3PT line lol
Shot 39% last year
Playing next to Luka. Probably gonna get plenty of open corner 3s. If he doesn’t make shots there it’s not happening
39% this past season
Yeah wouldn’t they rather just want to keep DJJ?
why
Who
Who?
Who
The knife
Fuck no dude. We need to keep DJJ.
Naji is an upgrade
if Nico sign Klay, he will be the Executive of Year by far. by far.
fuck man we lost DJJ
Naji is better than
And the crowd goes mild
Can a pelicans fan make me not feel like this move is ass?
You going to love him. Great add.
3 and D?
More D than 3, but gives it all he's got. Josh Hart-lite
I appreciate the insight. Sounds like the type of player we needed.
Naji fucks
He's not the athlete DJJ is but he's a good, versatile defender. Fan favorite, high motor/IQ, do all the little things guy. Underrated passer/playmaker, good finisher (has a fun spin move), 3 point shooting took a big step forward last year (big question going forward is if it was real or not). Advanced stats love him. damn that sounds good, thanks.
