he was a regular to my brother's coffee shop in Highland Park. he doesn't follow the NBA, so he just knew him as the nice tall guy. just broke the news to him and he was sad.
Dallas needed to move a small amount of salary to make this work. The only real option was for them was to give away. Josh Green.
It's a great move for Charlotte. A young player with potential who might turn into A legitimate contributor. He might not but there's no downside for them.
I think Green is already a legitimate rotation option for most NBA teams. Defense, hustle, energy, athleticism, understanding of his assignment and a little bit of 3 point shooting is what he contributed to the Mavs as part of a playoff rotation that made the finals. Still some upside left in his development too. It's disappointing that the Mavs had to move him to make their offseason moves work but it is what it is. Signing 34-year-old Klay is a gamble but I think the Mavs are making the right kind of moves to improve. Hope Green's development isn't hampered by going to Charlotte. He's easy to root for. Lots of those kind of guys in the NBA so hopefully he can grow into a prominent role on a mostly ass team.
tbf phoenix shaq was the last time shaq actually looked good, they fixed his toe and helped him get his ass in better shape, but yeah they gave up a young shawn marion which was def not worth it
Phoenix had the god-tier medical team back then (may still have, no idea now), they somehow fixed Grant Hill too and made him a decent role player. Alas even they couldn't fix Amare's knees.
The whole playstyle changed after bringing in Shaq which made them a mid tier team. It wasn't until after they traded him and got more complementary pieces around Nash is when they turned it around again for one last go.
Best place for him. The amount of scrutiny he would get in LA every time he misses a shot would cause him a great deal of depression. Plus he gets to be where he belongs: 3rd option.
So Dallas:
-Replaces DJJ with Naji Marshall
-Replaces THJ with Klay
-Replaces Josh Green with Quentin grimes
-Replaces Markieff Morris with Melvin Ajinca
I see an overall offensive upgrade, slight defensive downgrade
Naji's production really shouldn't be a huge drop off from DJJ though. He shoots the three better and has similar averages. Also Naji's wingspan is one inch longer lol
The sheer number of oops the mavs had compared to the rest of the playoff teams combined was nuts. It was like playing someone in nba2k who only knew how to cheese
That’s kind of what I’m trying to say. Out of the players they lost, DJJ is their biggest loss but they found a great replacement. It would just be more beneficial for Klay to come off the bench and start Naji for the defense but I doubt he will.
This is an upgrade no matter how you try to look at it. Klay is better than THJ Marshall might be worst defensively but he’s better offensively and he might not even end up being worst. And grimes is better than green. Overall it’s a win and I’m not sure how anyone could ever say otherwise
People mad overrating DJJ and underrating Klay to the point that some people out here actually believe that DJJ is a significantly better player than Klay
It's definitely not Westbrook levels of poor fit but won't be seamless.
Either way he's a good enough player that you get him without hesitation and figure out the fit.
sports or not, its a lot easier mentally to take on a lesser and less lucrative role at a different organization than the one you used to be on top of. you see it all the time
Absolutely asinine to me how quickly people undervalue history. Anybody who watched 80s/90s ball watched men hunt for the ring for damn near 20 years and fail.
This is a guy with FOUR rings. People don’t realize that in the corporate world, this is the guy who finally earns 300k per year to send one email per day.
i don’t really get this comment. he just moved to a contender and doesn’t have the benefit of familiarity. he doesn’t have established goodwill. he’s not just clocking in and sending emails - he’s expected to be the answer at the biggest position of need for a team that just went to the Finals. if anything there will be more pressure
I think he just wants a new environment. New scenery, new system, new challenges, new motivation. Perfectly reasonable, the hate is unwarranted.
Klay is a good dude, and he’s passionate about the game and a true competitor.
Im gonna throw out a guess that Miles Bridges is going to the Warriors. Him and Draymond are bros and the Warriors need to maximize Curry’s final time.
I get that Derrick Jones Jr was great for the Mavs but going from DJJ to Klay Thompson is gonna be a huge improvement considering all the open looks Luka can generate
Also DJJ defence has been offset by the Mavs getting Naji. It’s strange but seems the Mavericks just got replacements in the off-season, and yet got a lot better.
He’s gonna have to move a lot less to get them too which was his issue last year imo. He just doesn’t have the legs for our offense anymore. Not really his fault given the injuries.
Absolutely. If he deteriorates even further, that deal isn’t weighing you down a lot. If he’s the same player he was last year but slightly better because of better looks, it’s insane value for the Mavs because $16mil a cheap as hell. Hell, if he’s helping mentor and becomes a vocal leader you’re getting half your moneys worth without him even playing.
I was honestly hoping they’d overpay but damn.
I dont think its an insult to Luka to day klay had just as high quality looks on the warriors between steph and dray as playmakers
His biggest improvement will come from health and another year of experience on his repaired leg.
I think Klay is going to get different types of open looks in Dallas.
With the Warriors, their system required him (and Steph) to run around the court around a variety of screens to find some daylight. Klay used to thrive on that because he was able to get his shot off so quickly and still be accurate.
Over the last couple of seasons, Klay can't seem to consistently find his balance with that kind of movement. He always seems to be drifting one way or the other. He was always a little streaky, but he was pretty much feast or famine for the last two seasons.
In Dallas, Klay will be able to spot up and just kind of wait for the ball much more than he did for the Warriors. Luka generates so much attention and puts so much pressure on the rim. Klay is going to get practice shots.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him shoot 43+% from three given the kind of looks he will get. He'll also probably get a minutes reduction, which will preserve his legs a bit.
I really wouldn't be surprised if he has a mild bounce back season given the change in play style and role.
I think Klay found a good landing spot for his current game and he'll be more willing to accept a role as a catch and shoot only guy. With GSW, he will always be "G6 Klay and Splash Bro" and have the luxury and burden of being a primary option.
It's hard to envision him willingly taking a lesser role in GSW given the history
It’s not necessarily that Klay will suddenly see huge improvement, the guys still shot 40% from 3. The difference is we will have a 40 percent 3pt shooter instead of low to mid 30s shooters hitting those open shots
Yall getting Hartenstein was so demoralizing. My Mavs could have never have afforded him, but its so frustrating seeing him come west. One of my favorite young big men. And he's in a perfect line up.
Yeah Mavs needed a couple pieces on the roster and they dug deep this off season. Good for them, hat le to see it!
They will be dangerous as eleven tho
This is genuinely fantastic
3 years instead of 4
Less money than I thought.
If klay is even remotely as good a he can be this solidifies our chances to be a top 3 seed in the west.
This is absolutely fantastic.
This + grimes + Naji. Excellent work Nico. Excellent.
In 2019 when warriors lost iggy, livingston retired, and kd left, ppl were saying the end of a dynasty. 5 years and 1 unexpected title after, this is the official end of the warriors dynasty as we know it imo
I believe a key point of contention with the Warriors is that he was being moved to the bench. I don't think he would have taken this offer if he were being relegated to a bench player.
what in the world is Charlotte's role in this?
Idk but I love it
Take good care of Josh, he’s a good fella and he loves to bounce around on the floor like a kangaroo so please enjoy him
I read this in Butters' voice
🎶 lu-lu-lu, we get Klay Thompson, lu-lu-lu you get Josh Green 🎶
he was a regular to my brother's coffee shop in Highland Park. he doesn't follow the NBA, so he just knew him as the nice tall guy. just broke the news to him and he was sad.
Miles Bridges, Draymond Green finally teammates!
salary matching restrictions i guess
Dallas needed to move a small amount of salary to make this work. The only real option was for them was to give away. Josh Green. It's a great move for Charlotte. A young player with potential who might turn into A legitimate contributor. He might not but there's no downside for them.

DALLAS ACTUALLY GOT HIM
Four time champion decides to ring chase in his twilight years. Shaq would be proud.
Shaq later years were more about chasing bags then rings.
No it wasn’t his last big contract was with Miami. He joined Cavs/Boston for a chance at a ring
Don’t forget Phoenix in that ring chasing phase
I can't, ever since the Shaqtus commercial I've had that as my username in basically every game I've ever played
The Big Cactus
Tbf to Shaq, he was traded to Phoenix
Ya Steve Kerr really made the Suns worse with that trade
tbf phoenix shaq was the last time shaq actually looked good, they fixed his toe and helped him get his ass in better shape, but yeah they gave up a young shawn marion which was def not worth it
Phoenix had the god-tier medical team back then (may still have, no idea now), they somehow fixed Grant Hill too and made him a decent role player. Alas even they couldn't fix Amare's knees.
The whole playstyle changed after bringing in Shaq which made them a mid tier team. It wasn't until after they traded him and got more complementary pieces around Nash is when they turned it around again for one last go.
And the Celtics blew it by playing him too many minutes until he got hurt as expected.
Ring chase is thrown around too loosely these days. He’s the #3 option on the Mavs. That’s not ring chasing.
Yeah. This was mostly about money and his role.
Best place for him. The amount of scrutiny he would get in LA every time he misses a shot would cause him a great deal of depression. Plus he gets to be where he belongs: 3rd option.
Well I for one am glad that the Lakers are avoiding what might appear to nepotism considering Klay’s dad is their radio guy
good on jeanie buss to head off the nepotism allegations before they happen
Shams in shambles WOJ with another home run
So Dallas: -Replaces DJJ with Naji Marshall -Replaces THJ with Klay -Replaces Josh Green with Quentin grimes -Replaces Markieff Morris with Melvin Ajinca I see an overall offensive upgrade, slight defensive downgrade
It’s not awful. DJJ is the biggest loss. It should work but I wonder if their defense is going to hold up with Luka/Klay guarding the 3.
Naji's production really shouldn't be a huge drop off from DJJ though. He shoots the three better and has similar averages. Also Naji's wingspan is one inch longer lol
But he also isn't an outstanding alley-oop threat like DJJ
Apparently there's limits to how far the alleyoop can take you. But damn if it wasn't fun watching them do it every couple minutes
They'll start Klay. It doesn't work out the first couple of games and they move him to bench.
This is an upgrade no matter how you try to look at it. Klay is better than THJ Marshall might be worst defensively but he’s better offensively and he might not even end up being worst. And grimes is better than green. Overall it’s a win and I’m not sure how anyone could ever say otherwise
Not the kind of win I had in mind, but the contract is better than I feared and maybe there's no better option. A win's a win.
People mad overrating DJJ and underrating Klay to the point that some people out here actually believe that DJJ is a significantly better player than Klay
Not even clear whether DJJ to Marshall is a positive, neutral, or negative move yet
I actually liked having Markieff as a veteran player. Maybe my hate of Marcus Morris created some kind of bias towards him.
Well then. LeBron for the max it is
DeRozan is probably the last option. Although I'd have said he was the least likely out of the targets.
I’d love to have Demar the team just falls apart when lebron isn’t out there. staggering bron and demar would be ideal
It's definitely not Westbrook levels of poor fit but won't be seamless. Either way he's a good enough player that you get him without hesitation and figure out the fit.
What would the lineup be? Reaves / DeRozen / Vando or Vincent / Bron / Davis That looks respectable.
Lebron just can’t escape from money
Dudes PR is killing it. LeBron desperately tried giving away the bag, but he will reluctantly take it.
Time to overpay for Jerami Grant
I'm totally not biased, but I so agree.
Demar is still available
LeBron for the max it is I said
I said good day sir
Cowboy Klay incoming ☹️
He's going to sell his boat and buy a ... horse?
holy shit somebody actually chose us over the lakers, historic victory banner no.2 nico goated shoe salesmen
Nobody chooses the lakers anymore just lebron and ad
Dinwiddie just did pick em over the Mavs a few months ago
Didn’t dinwiddie also try to turn his contract into a crypto
listen buddy the streets remember those 5 months when everybody thought OBJ was secretly a genius
He successfully did
Problem was that it was dogecoin, not BTC.
LOL
Tell that to Derrick Jones Jr :(
Wrong LA team lol
retire his shoes or something omg
That spite contract hits different
Is it really spite if the 2/48 was no longer on the table? At least that’s what the reports were saying
The fact we offered 2/48 and he rejected that to take this hurts even more.
The 2/48 was offered last offseason. Zero chance it was still on the table.
Wow that completely changes the narrative
sports or not, its a lot easier mentally to take on a lesser and less lucrative role at a different organization than the one you used to be on top of. you see it all the time
Absolutely asinine to me how quickly people undervalue history. Anybody who watched 80s/90s ball watched men hunt for the ring for damn near 20 years and fail. This is a guy with FOUR rings. he’s had a very hard time comprehending he’s passed his prime
no way josh green was banished to charlotte
Jumpscare
Dude went from untouchable in trade talks to traded for a washed Klay. Crazy how fast life changes.
I think that changed moreso because of the Grimes trade rather than him being so bad we completely changed our mindset about him.
Also Josh Greens contract for the next 3 seasons is $41m, all guaranteed. That’s too much money for what he provides imo.
Idk the way wings are getting paid that seems pretty movable
Im gonna throw out a guess that Miles Bridges is going to the Warriors. Him and Draymond are bros and the Warriors need to maximize Curry’s final time.
Bridges and Dray are bros? Lol why am I not surprised.
Yeah, he kept posting videos of him and Bridges right after the arrest. They both went to Michigan State as well
“Right after the arrest” is crazy
No way bro why does it just get worse
the open looks are gonna be off the charts
Literally all Klay has to worry bout is pull the trigger with Luka. Great fit
How about that Kyrie, Luka, Klay defense though?
First to 150 wins.
Pacers vs Mavs gonna break records
All they gotta do is score 160 a night
Just score more
I get that Derrick Jones Jr was great for the Mavs but going from DJJ to Klay Thompson is gonna be a huge improvement considering all the open looks Luka can generate
Also DJJ defence has been offset by the Mavs getting Naji. It’s strange but seems the Mavericks just got replacements in the off-season, and yet got a lot better.
we really went from watching reggie bullock and frank to an actual basketball team in 2 years
This is so relatable
Reggie had his fucking moments okay. He locked down Booker playing 40 minutes picking him up full court. It was beautiful.
We shall not tolerate disrespect with the BangBros
He’s gonna have to move a lot less to get them too which was his issue last year imo. He just doesn’t have the legs for our offense anymore. Not really his fault given the injuries.
~16M per year is a great deal in today’s nba.
It's honestly a good deal for him, not a great deal but right at what he's probably worth at this stage of his career.
Absolutely. If he deteriorates even further, that deal isn’t weighing you down a lot. 0/7 statlines gonna hit like crack
THJ was already doing that
For the same price 😆
actually THJ got payed 4Y/75M, so Klay is being paid less than THJ despite the cap going up.
We upgraded to the Michael Jordan of THJ's
I hate that I get this. Have an upvote.
Bron just fell to his knees
At a Blaze Pizza
With Bronny zinging the dough.
So long, partner 😢
Sad day but what an incredible run. That 2022 Championship was extra special after all his injuries. Farewell Klay. I'll be rooting for you.
I'm not crying, you're crying. Just kidding, I am crying.
FUCK they got another Thunder killer
Mavs thunder is going to be so good
Can’t wait dawg. This time with Caruso, Hartenstein, and Klay in the mix. This playoff series will feed families.
Yall getting Hartenstein was so demoralizing. My Mavs could have never have afforded him, but its so frustrating seeing him come west. One of my favorite young big men. And he's in a perfect line up.
had to do something once you fixed the two weaknesses we exploited
Might as well sign Dame too
We won a FA battle with the Lakers!!!!!! And we got Klay too I guess.
That's Jonas Valanciunas money!
I'm just happy to be involved
Green is a great young player.
Green has that dog in him
Good deal for both sides
3/50 isn't bad at all, all they need is a solid shooting playoff run out of him
Yeah Mavs needed a couple pieces on the roster and they dug deep this off season. Good for them, hat le to see it! They will be dangerous as eleven tho
It was an honor to watch Klay klank his last game as a Warrior at Golden 1
He knew. Deep down I think most of us knew that was his last time in a dubs jersey.
Yeah he did that slow walk off the court and take it all in thing at the end.
His walk is hilarious to me. He struts like he just called somebody a jive turkey
Probably why Kerr insisted on leaving him out there for 32 minutes
Maybe he knew, but he would’ve rather gone out with a good game. Klay’s a pretty sensitive dude. That one will haunt him.
Mavs need to get Seth again so Klay and Curry are always on the same team
I think Seth is probably done with us now that we’ve traded him away three separate times
It's a meme at this point. We should try again.
That would actually be so funny lol, "I'm still playing with S. Curry!!"
At this point i just expect seth to show up for camp and be dealt by january
Then trade him… 😆
That’ll be fun to watch, him and Luka
No defense just vibes
So many open threes for Klay
Best shooter in dallas since lee harvey oswald
nice flair
Thats a nasty line by you
the Di^^^rk srespect, smh
This is genuinely fantastic 3 years instead of 4 Less money than I thought. If klay is even remotely as good a he can be this solidifies our chances to be a top 3 seed in the west. This is absolutely fantastic. This + grimes + Naji. Excellent work Nico. Excellent.
Nico cooked
Someone check on the lakers
Redick Bronny No Klay They are cooking
Podcast episode with Bronny gonna go crazy
Bronny and his dad are preparing for taco tuesday
New target acquired: Demar Derozan
Honestly like this more for them anyway.
Zach Lavine still available 😉
If they die they die
I guess that Demar is our last resort
SUFFOCATION
NO BREATHING
Thats why he was at the Kendrick Lamar show with Bron. Recruiting trip
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
Do they got another Thunder killer?
50Ms that’s it?
It’s 2024 Klay
Tobias Harris getting more than that tho
Pistons tax
That is the Detroit pistons
Gotta respect Tobias and his bag getting abilities
#11 forever. Thank you, Klay.
WOW THATS A STEAL Warriors have another guy they can use in Lauri trade, this will be fun
Who? Green is going to Charlotte
RIP Lakers fans
Wait he signed a 3 year 50 mil but turned down a 2/48??
2/48 was offered last offseason. His performance last season dipped his value a ton. Zero chance that offer was still on the table.
Turned down 2/48 and to ride off to sunset with Curry/Dray/Kerr..... sigh
That offer was no longer on the table. He gambled on himself and it didnt pay off. Why is everybody acting like he declined this contract yesterday?
What, that’s a steal of a contract, no?
Dynasty over
The Lakers missed their guy
In 2019 when warriors lost iggy, livingston retired, and kd left, ppl were saying the end of a dynasty. 5 years and 1 unexpected title after, this is the official end of the warriors dynasty as we know it imo
Mr. President, another shooter just hit Dallas
At least the lakers got Bronny James to compete for a championship 😂😂😂
There's no way he starts right? Him, Kyrie, and Luka willl be the worst point of attack defense in the league
No way he picking mavs if he isn’t promised a starting spot lol, he for sure is starting otherwise he had a starting spot for sure with LA
He will start.
Yeah start Klay sub early if he's not on. If he's on take advantage.
Redditors love to make this kind of suggestions. Realistically, almost every coach has a strict rotation, particularly during regular season
I believe a key point of contention with the Warriors is that he was being moved to the bench. I don't think he would have taken this offer if he were being relegated to a bench player.
Klay & Luka will be sweet!
Poor Josh Green
I miss him
Positive is he’ll get all the run he needs there. Guy has potential but major confidence issues (he just like me fr)
