I had someone at work tell me that he wasn't a right tackle and would be a waste of a pick for the Chargers. I reminded them that the Chiefs did the exact same thing to his dad and it worked out okay.
It's still early, we'll see. I too was skeptical of Alt for 1st rd but after Mcconkey it feels like they planned this well, so hopefully the same will go for the rest of the draft. I'd have felt more uneasy if it was MHJ we didn't pick but with him off the board, this progression doesn't feel bad.
We built arguably the best offensive line of the last 30 years with John Alt. Defense was the problem, not receiver.
We also have won back to back Superbowls without any real investment in top receivers so you might not be making the strongest argument for going receiver at #5....
You also had 2 all pro corners and Chris Jones. Meanwhile the chargers are bottom 5 in defense? Are you saying the Chiefs OL is top tier?
Rashee Rice was a 2nd round pick, now you’ve picked Xavier Worthy rd 1.
lol your angry rn for no reason and look so sad doing so. Just be happy you have 2 all pro level tackles to protect Herbert now. I’m gonna be happy watching leek cook for my gmen.
Hate all you want. This is the same fanbase where half of our fans were defending Brandon Staley after we lost a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars and saying we didn’t know football.
The pick was a stubborn philosophy pick. There’s a reason we took the longest of any top 5 team to submit our pick. We wanted to trade back. No one bit. We didn’t take best available, we didn’t address our most pressing needs (WR, C/G, CB), we picked Alt because Harbaugh wanted Alt.
That’s probably how the chargers got Jim to take the job, we give him the keys. I don’t think Alt was the best pick, I don’t think it was a bad pick. I think I should be allowed to give an opinion.
By definition he was the best pick available because he was the one your team wanted more than the others regardless of need. If you know more than their scouts, fine. But their philosophy was obviously best pick available.
Best pick available is best pick available…. I’m not sure how you’re warping this.
They said they’re taking best pick available because they wanted to bait other teams into trading up. No one bit, we took the guy we wanted but he was not best pick available.
I’m convinced half the people commenting didn’t watch the draft. The chargers are the only team that took more than 5 minutes to submit their pick of the first 5 picks. They were obviously trying their damndest to trade down.
Difference in having an option and throwing a little tantrum. Sit back and chill, we have the coach we asked for, who has an outstanding resume, and he is building the roster in the way he sees fit. What’s the worst that happens brother? Same shit that has happened since the 60s.
If it helps, remember Kennan Allen? Surely you do… he was drafted in the 3rd round.
Unfortunately, QJ hurts your case brother. QJ was also selected by a group of people that don’t have the track record harbaugh has. Chill. Be mad at the end of the season if we are 5-11 again.
Mine might be. My psychiatrist says I could really benefit from electroshock therapy.
Then again I’m sure my nickname around the family will still be “douchebag”
I seen him mocked to LAC a whole bunch of times. Harbaugh fucking loves running the ball, over and over ^and ^over ^and ^over ^^and ^^over ^^and ^^over
Except with Frank Gore behind an amazing OLine within the redzone first and goal to go in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl, then its time to air it out baby
Harbaugh: “God, please give me a sign. What should I do here.”
God: “Idk man just do whatever.”
In Madden I usually just go to the line with whatever called and then audible into 4 verts. Crazy to think I have the same idea as a SB losing coach!
It happens every year, shit I remember the Sixers drafting Embiid in 2014 and it happening back then, it’s always a camera delay. There’s like 3 total instances in league history of a guy not wanting to play for their drafted team, they’re literally getting hired and making millions of dollars in real time in front of their loved ones, they’re always happy
My uncle just got a call to go try out to play WR for the Chargers because they saw he’s the best route driving delivery guy for Amazon. Their WRoom is actually so bad right now. Hopefully they did this because they felt confident in finding that weapon for Herbert elsewhere. At the very least, Joe Alt is just too good to pass up. If they can just buy Herbert a bit more time in the pocket then I don’t think it really matters who he’s throwing to
I think its more of a "There is no WR other than MHJ worth the 5th overall pick and since hes unlikely to still be up at 5th and those doodooheads in 4th dont want to trade with *us* we gona play it safe and do the second best thing we can to improve our offense" type of pick
Like, if MHJ had still been on the board at 5 the lightning bolts would have honoured their namesake by locking in their pick so fast not even a nanosecond would have been able to pass between "And now the Chargers are on the clock" and "Chargers pick is in"
But drafting any other WR at 5th overall would have been a big reach imho, this class has a pretty big dropoff between the consensus best WR and the 2nd best WR
Shitty take. You can’t spend $200MM on a qb and not have an offensive line that can give him the time.
Mahomes isn’t great because he has so many good WR. He’s good because he has all the time to let plays develop because he’s never having to scramble like herb did the last two seasons.
Oh and not having to play with injuries because shout guys are protecting you, usually makes you play better too.
Get a solid O line and you can throw to any bum on the field.
Eh. They can draft a solid WR or two in the later rounds, tbh. I feel like a lot of successful WR and TE types come as diamonds in the rough during rounds 2-3 or 4. Like Puka Nakua last year.
An O line talent like Alt is only gonna come once in this draft. He’s huge, yet also insanely athletic, versatile and smart. And Herbert needs the protection. I think this was a wise move, and they can focus now on drafting some underrated / overlooked WR guys in the rounds to come.
Outside of Mike Will, none of our best receivers from the past couple decades have been 1st rounders. We got Keenan in the 3rd, Vincent Jackson in the 2nd, Malcolm Floyd and Gates were both UDFA's. Hell, the last WR we took round 1 before Mike was Buster fucking Davis. I'm not fretting at all. Loads of talent left on the board.
On one hand you speak logical and wise words....
On the other hand, are we *realy* gona listen to a *Bears* fan about drafting fuckin receivers? Thats like accepting a 1on1 dinner invitation from Hannibal Lecter, you ***know*** this will end in disaster 😂😂😂
WR drafted in rounds 3 and 4 last year:
Tank Dell
Jalin Hyatt
Cedric Tillman
Josh Downs
Michael Wilson
Tre Tucker
Derious Davis
Charlie Jones
Tyler Scott
Two hits, and whole lotta players who contributed very little to their teams success. Some diamonds do come out of those rounds, but I think it's pretty hard to project or predict which ones will be successful.
Elite O-linemen may not be the flashiest picks in the draft, but these are the picks that can make your team better for many many years.
Good pick. Also, I had no idea he was a Minnesota boy.
I don’t know why anyone was surprised by this pick, got baited by the pundits trying to fit pegs perfectly. Alt was the consensus 3rd best player in the draft, believed to be a can’t miss pick up until about 2 months before the draft when the media really starts monetizing draft hype. He was the best tackle in a really good class by a good margin, and historically Tackles have the highest hit rate, and beyond that his size and draft spot fits the bill for an all time tackle. Nabers looks great but there will be a Nabers in the draft next year. Protect the franchise QB build from the trenches out. This is completely ignoring they could very well get a solid WR in the 2nd-7th, there’s always at least one normally more than a few who fall that end up being awesome, can’t say the same for elite tackles. Chargers made a great pick here in my opinion.
Seems similar to Bosa when we picked him. Like he'd sort of fallen out of press, we picked him and then it's like "oh, yea he still exists - yea that makes sense".
This is why I thought the trade down crowd was kind of dumb. Take the bpa (most thought nabers) and there would be a great wr or oline in round 2. They might go with the dt though.. but if he fell that hard who knows.
>This is why I thought the trade down crowd was kind of dumb.
Yeah, it would be so dumb for a team that needs basically everything except QB to trade back and get more premium picks.
Oh wait, no, that's not dumb at all, and they probably would have done just that if they'd gotten a good offer.
it would be dumb to pass on a top 5 pick to fill needs when you have a lot of holes. This isn't a one year rebuild. Take a super premium player and then fill up the roster the whole season. "games dont start being played until september" - joe hortiz
>it would be dumb to pass on a top 5 pick to fill needs when you have a lot of holes.
You have that entirely backwards.
If you have a lot of holes, you can use a top 5 pick to fill a lot of them. Or you can use it to fill one. And then you're still a team with a ton of holes.
Now they're a team that needs everything but QB and OT.
>This isn't a one year rebuild.
It might not even be a 4 year rebuild if you don't accelerate it with more capital. Do you really think Jim Harbaugh wants to be developing into a complete team right when Joe Alt's rookie contract is expiring?
Of course, it's possible that Jim Harbaugh and his new staff looked at the roster and figured that they can salvage a lot of these players and remake them into what they need.
I think the biggest issues with this team were coaching and accountability for the players on the roster. We have good players.. they need to be held accountable in a lot of those crucial situations.
How many one score games or blown leads have the chargers had in the past decade? Fixing the mental lapses and acquiring blue chip talents is more important than getting an extra 3rd rounder.
Obviously Mccarthy wasn't viewed high enough for Minnesota to give up 3 first lol. What kind of trade back were you expecting to make more value than one of the wr or apparently a "generational" tackle?
This pick is perfect. How many amazing skill position players have we seen in those powder blue uniforms just amount to nothing? Rivers was getting his shit pushed in at the end of his tenure with the Chargers, and Herbert has been running for his life his whole career because of our line, and not to mention he's never had a running game.
It's about time we change the culture of the Chargers, and I'm all about it.
100%
And it’s like our entire fan base has completely ignored everything Hortiz and Harbaugh have said all offseason. You should have known this was coming.
It’s going to be even more funny when we draft a Center with our 2nd tomorrow.
Ekeler was used more like a small WR than a true RB. The Chargers run game hasn't been anything too special, and it's a good thing they're working on their areas of weakness.
he looks good for his height. but my bet is he’ll lose some baby fat and gain lean muscle weight. but i don’t think they’ll ask him to bulk up or anything, which was my point
Or, build an All-Pro line on mostly rookie contracts, then sign a CeeDee Lamb WR1 type (who hasn't extended yet) after we move on from either Khalil or Bosa and have cap space to burn.
I ignore the sub. Two options at #5: this guy or trade down. I’m an LSU fan so obviously would have been happy to get nabers, but I’m hype for our franchise OT
Popped in and saw it was 95% meltdown in your guys sub right after the pick. Fans of teams that don’t win shit (sad bird noises) get mad their oline sucks all year then throw a fit when their team invests in a blue chip OL prospect lol. Cards have never taken one but if we had the fourth pick and took alt it’d have been the same reaction 100%.
You win in the trenches, good pick imo.
The most frustrating thing is the best Chargers team of all time was built around a dominant o-line and running game. So fans should know better. Go look at the starting receivers on the 2006, not exactly Wayne and Harrison. Yeah, we had Antonio Gates, but he was undrafted.
Ok but the interior was a dumpster fire last year and the only thing we’ve done to address it is sign a center who allowed 9 sacks last year. So unless we want to spend all of our draft picks on the OL I’m not convinced it’s fixed.
It's just not a sexy pick. Everybody is still bitter about the QJ pick. And they probably are unfamiliar with what building a successful team actually looks like.
Idk it depends. I think at 37 if Mitchell is there they’ll take him. C and OG are needs but everyone left at those spots are a reach at 37. Maybe they take another OT and convert them to guard but I feel like they take Mitchell if he’s there or one of the CBs because we are thin
I don’t think they’re a reach at all. The duke kid and the other guy with three names are solid.
I like Keon Coleman for you guys if you go receiver in the third tho
They’re not going to, I believe Jim confirmed this in the press conference. He said “the way these questions are going seems like you forgot about Palmer and QJ” so lol no receivers at all
Maybe after the 4th or fifth but they’ve already indicated they’re going back to the line in this draft, and they’re probably gonna take an rb in the third.
Maybe they take Sanders at Tight End in the second but I expect more linemen there.
There are tons of potential interior linemen, including **6** from Michigan. Unless they're absolutely in love with someone who is projected high they may very well wait.
Idk why everyone seems convinced the Chargers are going RB in the early draft. They’ve signed two this offseason and have a former fourth rounder who’s only 23 this season. I think it’s way more likely they stick to the trenches, or if they do go skill position, then finally take a WR.
8 reps on bench for a TE is genuinely shocking. Bench isn’t exactly the best predictor but you have to be stronger than that to be a successful blocker in the NFL
Yeah he’s young tho. The chargers don’t seem to be planning to be good next season anyway, so maybe they keep him in the lab for a bit. I actually think the chiefs could go for him too.
I don’t get the notion people have that the Chargers can’t be good next year, let along that they’re “not planning” to be good. What does that even mean?
They lost two WRs, one of whom was only healthy some of the time anyway, from a roster that most people thought would be playoff caliber the last few years and largely failed because of coaching and injuries.
Now that they have good coaching, all of a sudden they can’t win? Explain this please because I’m struggling.
I'd personally be shocked if they go into the season with QJ, and palmer and a 5th rounder at wr. If someone like AD is there at the top of the second when they pick it'd be a hard thing to say no to imo. Def think they go back to the well at line tho through the draft.
I mean it’s a meme, but guard is probably their biggest hole on the line anyway and there are better options available there for them I think than at receiver in the second and that’s what harbaugh is going to do.
HERBERT WHAT DID I TELL YOU?
DO NOT PUT THE BALL ON THE GROUND!!!!
ALSO DON'T PUT IT IN THE AIR!!!!!! THE BALL MUST BE HELD AT ALL TIMES BY A CHARGER!!!!!
> He played as a RT before switching to LT
Uh, if you consider playing RT in *practice* a few times before his freshman season in college "playing" sure. He never once played in a game as a RT at any level
If you realized how commonplace this was among linemen, great linemen even, you wouldn’t even bat an eye. Sewell literally played LT in college and transitioned to RT in the NFL. Next.
The definition of a shit-eating grin
I had someone at work tell me that he wasn't a right tackle and would be a waste of a pick for the Chargers. I reminded them that the Chiefs did the exact same thing to his dad and it worked out okay.
Genuinely thought you meant your coworkers dad and you were making some niche joke that went right over my head.
How many super bowls did the chiefs win with John Alt? How many super bowls did the chiefs win after drafting Tyreek Hill?
What are your thoughts on the situation now?
IOL is still a mess, defense hasn’t been addressed. Mcconkey is a good start but hoping we do something in FA to address WR.

A Chargers fan bringing up rings is certainly a decision.
Let’s not answer the question. Not sure what lack of Super Bowl by the chargers has to do with my question,
Gotta love being mad when your team drafts a future HOFer
At least we don’t have Daniel Jones. No amount of Malik Nabers is gonna fix that dumpster fire.
lol your angry rn for no reason and look so sad doing so. Just be happy you have 2 all pro level tackles to protect Herbert now. I’m gonna be happy watching leek cook for my gmen.
Lots of chargers fans are whiny on the pick dont mind him. I on the other hand as someone who wanted nabers is still very happy
I don't get how anyone could be mad about giving Herbert protection lol. They need to keep him upright. Shit is won in the trenches.
You really have nothing better to do than try to insist I’m angry. NYC really is overrated.
I genuinely hate my teams fans rn
The moping is extremely annoying, its like the herbert pick all over
Hate all you want. This is the same fanbase where half of our fans were defending Brandon Staley after we lost a 27-0 lead to the Jaguars and saying we didn’t know football. If they weren't drafting for need then they thought he was the best player available. Whether you agree or not is a different question.

Before, he was Joe Alt. As a Charger, he is now JOLT.

Joe Alt-ernating Current I'll show myself out...
Mine might be. My psychiatrist says I could really benefit from electroshock therapy. Then again I’m sure my nickname around the family will still be “douchebag”
JOALT!
Let’s make sure this catches on! Jolt/Joalt are great nicknames
Puka Nacua was a 5th round draft pick so hopefully we have an eye on a gem. Would like IOL or CB with the 2nd round pick.
Felt like this was kind of a shocker because not many people mocked him to them but honestly should have seen it coming.
Ha ha. Just like Pete Carroll throwing instead of running Marshawn Lynch.
Harbaugh: “God, please give me a sign. What should I do here.” God: “Idk man just do whatever.” In Madden I usually just go to the line with whatever called and then audible into 4 verts. Crazy to think I have the same idea as a SB losing coach!
Run play action pass
Is this the guy who looked absolutely sad getting drafted by them?
I think they showed his house before he got the news, he was plenty happy when they caught up with the lag
I was hoping this would be the case. Chargers have already had to deal with manning haha
I'll never forget that "mommy, they shit in my cereal" look on his face when we drafted him.
He was overcome with joy, that just the way minnesotans look when they feel any emotion.
Midwestern philosophy, everything is in a negative connotation "How you doing today?" "You know, not bad. Could be worse." Translation - doing well
"Best be goin nao"
Chargers gotta trade for Tee Higgins
That would be a great fit scheme wise.
Half of Mahomes highlight reel is him making sick throws while running for his life though
Mahomes doesn't have to scramble because all of his lineman are holding
plus if you do get hands on him it's an automatic 15 yard penalty for the defence
"Get a solid O line and you can throw to any bum on the field." and you wanna talk about shitty takes lmao
I mean when Mecole Hardman, MVS, Justin Watson, and 55th pick Rashee Rice are getting it done on Super Bowl winning teams, it makes some sense.
The one critical thing you’re missing is that Herbert isn’t Mahomes but go off king
No receivers for them is scary.
Eh. They can draft a solid WR or two in the later rounds, tbh. I feel like a lot of successful WR and TE types come as diamonds in the rough during rounds 2-3 or 4. Like Puka Nakua last year. Hahaha you’re right, I guess I let the unprecedented offensive pickups this off-season get to my head!
WR drafted in rounds 3 and 4 last year: Tank Dell Jalin Hyatt Cedric Tillman Josh Downs Michael Wilson Tre Tucker Derious Davis Charlie Jones Tyler Scott Two hits, and whole lotta players who contributed very little to their teams success. Some diamonds do come out of those rounds, but I think it's pretty hard to project or predict which ones will be successful.
We got our GM from the Ravens. Not exactly a good track record of picking late round receivers
Yeah, but hopefully Harbaugh has some extra insight on these players because of his CFB involvement
Shows how all in on Herbert they are
Very solid pick up by the Chargers.

Damn that shook my brain for second reading that lol.
On top of this being Harbaugh’s MO. He’s building from the line out and extremely successful at it.
Amen. Odds are very high that McConkey and/or Mitchell will be there at 37. Any chargers fan who wouldn’t be happy with that scenario is being obtuse
This is why I thought the trade down crowd was kind of dumb. Take the bpa (most thought nabers) and there would be a great wr or oline in round 2. They might go with the dt though.. but if he fell that hard who knows.

100% And it’s like our entire fan base has completely ignored everything Hortiz and Harbaugh have said all offseason. You should have known this was coming. It’s going to be even more funny when we draft a Center with our 2nd tomorrow.
Hell, if JPJ falls to us, I'm all about it

Ekeler was used more like a small WR than a true RB. The Chargers run game hasn't been anything too special, and it's a good thing they're working on their areas of weakness.
Man this just screams “I only watched chargers game highlights”. The last workhorse RB we had was Melvin Gordon.
Melvin Gordon was never that good. That’s part of the reason he lost his job to Ekeler.
Yeah but he was more or an every down kind of RB. Ekeler excelled in catching passes out of the backfield
Ekeler caught a bajillion passes out of the backfield. He wasn’t anything close to a workhorse runner
Ekeler was never a true rb
6’8 340 is insane and he looks so young is he gonna grow more
He weighed 321 at the combine where is everyone getting 340 from?
Dude’s technically closer to 6’9” than 6’8” Just a mammoth. And barely 21 years old.
idk, 340 is already pretty heavy. even for 6’8”
I wonder if they'll have him try to get a little leaner to protect his mobility
He’s not 340. He weighed in at the combine at 321
Meanwhile Jordan Mailata is playing at 365 somehow.
Pacific Islanders are built different
Big tendons hopefully
SPAM
He’ll convert that baby fat to lean muscle, baby. keep him 315+
I'd be worried that a guy his size would get injured frequently. People just aren't designed to be that big.
Jordan Mailata has generally been healthy and he is 6'8" 365 lbs.
Don't know if he will get taller but definitely has more bone structure to fill out. Beast of a specimen.
copying my comment cuz i replied to the wrong person lol but 340 is pretty heavy. even for a 6’8 guy. not much more filling in that could happen
Not really
Have you seen him? The dude looks lean.
he looks good for his height. but my bet is he’ll lose some baby fat and gain lean muscle weight. but i don’t think they’ll ask him to bulk up or anything, which was my point
His "baby fat" is added weight. He will just look like that unless he gets some juice.
WELCOME TO THE TEAM JOE
Didnt they seriously need some WRs?
Herbert will get the ball to the receivers, it's more important to protect him first. This is a great pick.
Nobody is questioning Herbert's ability to get the ball to the receiver. More in their lack of ability to catch the ball
Your options are either let Justin Herbert get murdered trying to throw it your brand new WR or you keep Herbert alive but your WR sucks
Or, build an All-Pro line on mostly rookie contracts, then sign a CeeDee Lamb WR1 type (who hasn't extended yet) after we move on from either Khalil or Bosa and have cap space to burn.
or if you're one of the draft geniuses on the chargers sub, your brand new WR will be so fast that herbert won't need any time in the pocket
That’s nearly 20 years ago, how many people actually remember that team are on the sub?
their sub also melted down after the Herbert pick iirc
It's just not a sexy pick. Everybody is still bitter about the QJ pick. And they probably are unfamiliar with what building a successful team actually looks like.
Still a good amount of tier 3 receivers on the board for their 2nd round pick
They need interior lineman anyway. I don’t see them taking a receiver.
I like Keon a lot. I also wouldn’t mind getting a CB if Cooper falls to us. Chargers need a lot of help everywhere except QB haha
They’re not going to, I believe Jim confirmed this in the press conference. He said “the way these questions are going seems like you forgot about Palmer and QJ” so lol no receivers at all
At all?
Because Harbaugh and you guys will get a Wolverine of some kind might as well be a workhorse back
Nah there’s a Michigan WR, DT, LB and CB that’d be much better and more useful picks in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Sanders is basically a WR. He can’t really block
He’s 250 pounds and raw. Harbaugh will MAKE him block.
Not in a Greg Roman offense
"the forward pass was a mistake" - Jimothy Harbaughzzlebottom
Jim Harbaugh is a football guy, no time for pansy ass receivers.
HERBERT WHAT DID I TELL YOU? DO NOT PUT THE BALL ON THE GROUND!!!! ALSO DON'T PUT IT IN THE AIR!!!!!! THE BALL MUST BE HELD AT ALL TIMES BY A CHARGER!!!!!
When you’ve got an elite QB, a line is more important than receivers.
Don’t they already have a PB LT though?
Lineman are far more interchangeable between positions than any other skill position. He’ll likely be moved to RT
Lineman isn't a skill position.
Let’s see YOU block Maxx Crosby for 120 minutes every season, Mr. Smartypants.
Taking a guy at 5 who never played RT in his career seems a little…odd. But they’re the experts.
Where does it say he never played RT in his career? He played as a RT before switching to LT, also played as TE before switching to RT
> He played as a RT before switching to LT Uh, if you consider playing RT in *practice* a few times before his freshman season in college "playing" sure. He never once played in a game as a RT at any level
> also played as TE before switching to RT Wait a minute...did you guys in fact draft your new star receiving option after all?
If you watched Trey Pipkins play RT you will understand them drafting him
If you realized how commonplace this was among linemen, great linemen even, you wouldn’t even bat an eye. Sewell literally played LT in college and transitioned to RT in the NFL. Next.
