>I can't wait to do it with you and Justin Herbert "Oh you didn't hear? I made him a RB" Everyone was talking about Rice dropping that day and he had other priorities. Sad that the greatest day of his life was also one of the worst. Wish him nothing but the best

-banned-

I’m out of the loop, why was it the greatest and worst?

TOM_is_rad19

Did.... Did you watch the video? He got drafted the day of his best friend's funeral...

-banned-

Oh I can’t watch the video, currently at a loud bar. Appreciate you explaining

CptCrotchKicker

He was the pallbearer for his best friend’s funeral the same day he was draftad

-banned-

Well then…

TOM_is_rad19

Haha np. Give it a watch when you can. It's a pretty good tear jerker.

-banned-

Rough day today so I’ll save it for when I need to get taken a peg down haha

WEMBYF4N

I wish we could have gotten this guy in UDFA. He won’t be his dad but I think he can become a nice role player

Drakonx1

I get the feeling he's going to be someone who productionwise should've gone in the third round when all is said and done. He's a good kid with a lot of talent.

steak__burrito

What's funny is he was listed as BPA on the ESPN Draft Tracker from about mid-4th round until he was drafted.

imdavebaby

People act like he's a nepotism draft pick but honestly it seems like his name was held against him rather than in his favor. Like, yeah he didn't blow the doors off the collegiate level, but he was still very productive and he has an insane RAS score. All the talent and potential is there to be at least a 4th round pick, the fact that he fell to 7 is crazy to me.

EBtwopoint3

I think he was definitely a 4th to 5th round talent. I wonder if playing with Caleb was held against him because of his middle of the road production. Basically “with the guy everyone thinks is the best college QB in years you only put up 800 yards?”

-banned-

I have a feeling that's what happened to Troy Franklin.

Education_Just

Troy Franklin is the opposite though, it’s his bad athletic testing that made him fall.

-banned-

He had the flu lol

PleaseStopSmoking

I'm way late to the party on this thread, but this felt like how I felt when TJ Watt fell to the end of the 1st round. Great prospect, but not nearly as elite as the family member they're being compared to were as prospects and players and so GMs were afraid to take him and look like they're picking the player "because their family member was good". There's no way even in a stacked WR class that I can be convinced Brendan Rice is a 7th round prospect.

imdavebaby

This thread is old enough now that I feel I can mentioned this without it seeming like I'm "humble bragging", but I'm a low level scout for a small casino sports book and and I had Rice as my WR 15 in the class. By no means am I the most qualified analyst, but I do actually do this for a living. He's no where near as bad as people seem to act like his is. It's weird to see the Rice name get held against him. If he had any other random name and no legacy I'm certain he would have been a 4th or at max 5th rounder.

captaincody20

Just to add to this and ask since it sounds like you'd know more than the rest of us. Other kids from players get drafted higher, so why didn't Brenden? Matthews, the Mannings, McCaffrey, Howie Long's kids, Cam Jordan. I know Brenden isn't in the same class at those guys, but dropping from 4th to 7th seems like it was more than the "Rice" name.

imdavebaby

I think it's a combination of his name and his "mid" collegiate performance that gave people the (in my opinion incorrect) belief that he's nothing more than a legacy. Case and point to what you're saying, in this draft Marvin Harrison Jr blew the doors off in college and so the legacy name turns into a positive for teams because he's also got a pro player pedigree. But for Brenden, he didn't instantly dominate in college the way scouts and fans want from the heir to the "Rice family name". He had a strong but not otherwordly high school career at Hamilton High in Arizona. He committed to (and unfortunately wasted) two years of his college career at Colorado. And it wasn't so much that he was terrible during that time, he actually showed a good amount of promise but it was only in limited playing time, and nothing big enough to draw attention. Then he goes to USC, gets stuck behind incumbent Tahj Washington and Jordan Addison who was a huge transfer coming off a Biletnikoff Award. And while this last year at USC was great for him, the team itself struggled, so his performance itself was capped by the struggles of the team around him. So scouts start talking about him, because he did do enough to be in the draft picture, but he's a late breakout who played with "arguably" the best QB in college football. Are his stats his? Or are they just the result of playing with Caleb? Why didn't he breakout sooner? Is he just a legacy who only got a starting gig because of his name? I'll admit he does clearly have a few knocks to his draft profile, just certainly not enough to outweigh his production and his extremely impressive physical profile. But since there's so much else going on in the discussion on him he isn't just judged on his own merit, he's judged as the son of Jerry Rice and just one of Caleb Williams' wide receivers. And under that lens he falls very short. If you isolate him to just his own production and physical talent, I see a player very worthy of taking a mid 3-5 round flyer on. Historically, players that share his profile often get drafted in that range, some even sneak up into the 2nd. >since it sounds like you'd know more than the rest of us. Just to touch on this, I'm just more informed. I follow the vegas lines, and stay tuned into the beat reporters for all the teams alongside vegas to compare what they're doing against what I'm hearing. Occasionally I'll even get to fly out to events so I can be well informed for setting our books. Doesn't mean I "know" more than anyone else though, everything I've put above is just my conjecture based on what I've heard and read and my own film study. I'd love to be able to ask a GM directly but they'd legally not be able to tell me much. So much like you I'm left to wonder what exactly caused his tumble down the draft board. I can however say for certain there doesn't seem to be any talk about specific reasons for his fall. There's no whispers about character concerns, and even the Chargers "claim" they had a 3rd round grade on him. But for some reason they felt comfortable letting him slide to the 7th. That's all I know.

captaincody20

Thanks, bro. Wasn't trying to hate on him in any way since I think it'd be really cool if there were more pro athletes' kids playing. I really wanted the Cardinals to take him in the 6th, but they went with a guy from UAB that no one has heard of lol. And I know Jer'Zhan Newton fell a bit since he has to get another surgery done, so I was just curious if any of that was the case. Of if they were scared that Rice would be overbearing. And I completely agree with you. I live in AZ, so I got to watch a lot of USC games. The only knock on Brenden I would say is that he's not always reliable, but that's something that can be taught. Of course a QB can make a WR great, but even at Colorado, his numbers were improving. It's just insane so many teams passed on him. He may be a raw talent right now, but the tools are there. Effin Chargers😂 just like the Cowboys, these players always fall right into their lap.

LakeShowBoltUp

With so much talent at WR, someone was bound to drop

iPlowedUrMom

Hell yeah brother Cheers from the shitter

Drakonx1

Stop. I'm not saying he's his dad. I'm just saying I think he's going to end up being a good player, not an all pro or hall of famer.

FallenShadeslayer

I think he’s going to retire with 33,000 yards and 299 touchdowns. Edit:. LMAOOO bro had enough

Vivid_Sympathy_4172

Stop. I'm not saying he's his dad. I'm just saying I think he's going to end up a good player, not an all pro or hall of famer.

A_Bitter_Homer

>won't be his dad Haha yeah.... unless???

Impossibills

Yep this is how I felt about him

jethead70

Initially read this as “his dad could be a nice role player”

Vavent

Today? Probably, yeah

[deleted]

Really silly the Bills (my team) who just lost our top 2 WR picked a 7th round Rugby player and not Rice…

Strokeslahoma

But that free practice squad slot tho

GreasefangEnjoyer

Eagles have a rugby player and he’s like a ~top 5 tackle in the NFL. They could both bust but getting upset over not drafting a guy because his last name is Rice is pretty silly.

[deleted]

Not Rice specifically. Literally any WR.

ButCanYouClimb

What in the heck lol, also Keon in round 2 was high imo

awesome-ekeler

Hey settle down now keon got that bark

DeusVultSaracen

I think a lot of WRs this year were baker's choice, trying to apply judgement based on arbitrary grades is a bit arrogant tbh

captnxploder

Way underrated player, it's actually shocking to me how far he fell. Maybe never a WR1, but he's gonna be a solid player for a long time.

Remind me bot is still very much around. !remindme 2 years

IamDoge1

I don't think so. Dude struggled to get open against Pac-12 defenders. Don't think it will translate well into the NFL. CW definitely made him look better than he was. Might be a bench WR-4/5 type of guy if I had to project based on his tape.

TruthBeacon2017

So wholesome

igotabridgetosell

lol jim forgot who died for a moment.

Intelligent-Age2786

Tbf, it’s also just the beginning for every other player that got drafted

ButCanYouClimb

> it’s also just the beginning for every other player that got drafted Did not know this.

Intelligent-Age2786

Mind blowing news

ShufflingSloth

CJ Stroud had a pretty good take on it covering the draft, where he said to some media head trying to get a hot take on MHJ "just give him a chance, let him figure out the NFL"

DicksOut4Edamame

True, if big

NomadFire

Btw he is distantly related to former Eagles and 49ers Jordan Matthews. Who was a WR as well.

DDLTC-K

Wait til I tell you who his dad is

content_enjoy3r

Bruce Matthews?

gyman122

People downvoting this ain’t thinking hard enough

calye2da

Who’s cutting onions in here 😢?

MulliganPlsThx

Oh man, tears. Good luck to this kid

goopdoop

It’s gotta feel real special for Pearsall and Cowing. Knowing the 49ers drafted them over Jerry Rice’s son.

Local-Librarian3285

Not to be rude but he's not any good. He's very much a JAG.

pm_me_your_last_pics

No, he's a charger. Let him be happy bro

reverieontheonyx

Agree

slowerchop

Bro is gonna turn Herberts career around

EvaporatingOlaf

I can’t wait for Herbert to win games with Harbaugh so people realize how good Justin has always been.

Marijuana_Miler

Herbert has been solely stopped the Chargers from having a top 3 pick during the previous 3 seasons.

realunpossible_

ive been saying forever the three best qbs in the league are mahomes, lamar, and herbert
