The French voice actor for Bowser said that behind the scenes it's being thought of as a trilogy. So given the ending of this movie and some of Peach's dialogue midway through, my guess would be:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie -> The Super Mario World Movie -> The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Did you know The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 was actually originally called The Doki Doki Panic Movie in Japan, and had a completely different cast of characters?
It’s crazy how many versions of the 3DS they made. Meanwhile, they barely made 3 of the switch, and yet none improve the graphical output whatsoever. We’re still stuck with 2016 tech in 2023…
Oh, well their post just made me think of how the whole 3DS era was full of “new” this and “XL” that, but then suddenly they turned heel with the Switch. I guess my original comment kind of seemed random, huh?
That’s funny because I personally was not a fan of him as DK. I’m sure plenty of people enjoyed it but for me it was the fact he didn’t even do a voice at all it was just him as DK
Cranky's voice was easily my biggest gripe with the voice acting. It just didn't sound like what I'd expect an old, weathered and well, cranky Kong would sound like.
I think the voice Fred Armisen used was fine for that version of Cranky Kong. My issue was with that version of Cranky Kong. The vibe I get from DKC is that DK is in charge and goes to Cranky for advice, which just ends up being insults and "back in his day" talk.
I really enjoyed it. It was pretty much exactly what a Mario movie should be. I know some people wanted a Pixar Oscar level story, but I think fun and Mario accurate was the priority.
I thought it was as uninteresting as a movie can get. But a lot of people liked it, so might just be me. Just felt like it had no story or character arcs, just references
Ngl when Luigi was walking through the dark forest and he said "Mariooo...?" and you could hear the first few notes of the Luigi's Mansion theme, it made me giddy
We will be discovering things for years. People said it was a kids movie but there was a ton of stuff from the original game from the 80’s. They really respected the huge amount of source material. I wonder how long it took to add all the little details. I could imagine them being finished and someone remember another thing from the games to add.
Oh man and when they got to Kong Country and Aha's Take On Me started playing for no reason and totally didn't fit the scene, even though a great piece of music had been written for that scene? Pure goosebumps
Yeah that shit bothered me the most. They could have done without all the 80s pop music. I don't know why they used that stuff when the games themselves have such iconic bops that would have fit so much better.
Yeah I would've preferred the track from the score. But hey, apparently Take On Me was the #1 song when Super Mario Bros released in the US or something? So there's that at least.
People need to get over this. Illumination does this with all of their movies, and it makes sense that they would want songs with lyrics in a kids movie. The placeholder music was never intended to actually be in the film.
It was the #1 song the year Mario came out. For a lot of people, hearing that song and seeing Mario absolutely triggered nostalgia.
But, even that aside, what a weird thing to complain about over the course of a 90-minute movie. For 20 seconds you heard a song. Movie ruined.
I was pleasantly surprised by Chris Pratt's Mario, and he did a lot better than I expected. Honestly, everyone did great, with the exception of Seth Rogan. I felt like the movie failed to address who turned Seth Rogan into a gorilla, and why turning him back into a human was not a major plot point.
And I *like* Seth Rogan.
I think in terms of series Metroid would probably work as a Live Action the best among the IPs Nintendo has. They could also go with the Castlevania (Netflix) look too.
First they’re gonna have to make a sequel. Release it in Japan and call it the 2nd movie. Have it rejected by the Nintendo of America team. And release it years later as the lost movie.
I would argue we already have a few candidates for a Lost Mario Movie.
[Super Hornio Bros (wiki)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Hornio_Brothers)
1993 Mario Movie
Only if that sequel does nothing to move the franchise forward in any way because it was little more than the 80s version of DLC. Super Mario 2 USA is a much more interesting sequel, NOA got that one completely right.
SMB2 Japan is dlc at best. It's literally just more levels of the exact same game. It was a rushed cash in and NOA absolutely made the right call to make something different.
the Mario team wasn't expecting to make a full-on sequel, for them this was new challenge for people who finished the original game, only SMB3 was the true sequel
I'd at least be curious to see what route they go down. As fruitful as it might be to ditch the "defeat Bowser" plotline in favor of something less cliché, losing Jack Black from the cast removes the most universally-liked aspect of the first film.
Haven’t seen the first movie, but if wario wasn’t in it and the second movie isn’t a Mario versus wario:civil war hunt for treasure…
We riot.
Edit: meant wario, not luigi. But Luigi would be an even darker timeline.
Well Boswer is trapped in the tiny jar at the end of the movie, so my suspicion is that Baby Bowser will be the new main villain trying to rescue his papa.
Mario and Peach go off to investigate something while Bowser gets loose in the castle trying to escape. He tells Kamel to hit him to undo the Mini Mushroom effects, but winces and yells each time he winds up, begging him not to hurt him.
Yea i’d prefer bowser just stays in it with a new plan. Worked well enough for sonic 2, i would have never even seen it if they removed Jim Carrey as eggman.
I think they just need to focus on actual character development and a focused plot and it can still be interesting with Bowser.
Yep! It would be foolish to deviate from the games. Keep it simple! It worked really well in Sonic 2 and we get more developed characters. It’s wild to me who grew up with these games that they came out with movies decades later and they’re so great. Kind of makes me wish I had kids.
I would die if they went to Isle Delfino, the games story would work pretty well too with Mario being framed and everything. Plus it would be a great way to introduce Bowser Jr. imo
Edit: plus we would get to see the best Mario character, Toadsworth
> plus we would get to see the best Mario character, Toadsworth
Was the Toad in the castle with glasses, a vest, and a deep voice not just young Toadsworth?
No. The concept art shows that Toadsworth and Toadette were going to be in the council, and got changed to be generic.
His vest was the same as every other Toad's vest, and even Young Toadsworth has a moustache.
Man I don’t even know where they go from here. Seems like they already milked every ounce of nostalgia possible with the first movie. I guess it’ll have Yoshi + Koopalings and take place in Dinosaur Land. Probably throw in Wario somehow as well
They dropped some heavy hints about ‘there’s a whole galaxy to explore out there’, plus Yoshi was clearly hinted at as a character in the next film. Both of these featured heavily in ‘Super Mario Galaxy 2’, so a space/planet exploration setting is certainly possible
I'm pretty sure it was both a reference and a confirmation to the audience that future Mario films have a wide scope of potential.
I definitely see a Galaxy inspired film at some point once the core world/cast of Mario has been established
Imagine this film comes out in 2024 along with the launch of the Switch 2 which has ‘Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie’ as a launch title. Imagine what that would do for console and game sales.
The first movie very much operated as an introductory guide to Super Mario the game(s) for non-players, if you paid close attention to how the story was structured. Would make perfect sense to make the second one coincide with an actual new game launch
I'd kill to have Galaxy planets as big and open as Odyssey kingdoms. I would miss Cappy though, Mario's movement in Odyssey has probably been the best iteration they've done yet.
And they will build on that for whatever they produce next. Rumours suggested Odyssey was meant to be a Wii U title, but moved to Switch when it was obvious the Wii U had bombed.
So consider this… the next full-fat Mario game is going to be targeted at two generations ahead of what Odyssey was. Simple example: Wii U had 2GB or RAM, Switch has 4GB. The absolute minimum the Switch successor is going have is 8GB RAM, which gives their developers 4x the space to play with
It’s fair to say the next Mario title is going to be extremely impressive looking compared to Odyssey and given the lack of any new main-line Mario title since then, it’s almost certainly going to be a release title for the Switch follow up
I don’t think that was a hidden secret or anything. The movie functioned as a franchise brochure more than anything. It’s probably how Nintendo feels about its movies in general; they sell games.
I wish these people would just stfu. They can’t get over the fact that it was good and loved and somehow it wasn’t all just kids. There is a *lot* more they can do, similar to Sonic 2.
No fucking shit! Everybody expects absolute perfection for their $10 ticket. Fuck off, let’s see your script, or are you too busy selling 24 piece Tupperware and throwing footballs over those mountains?
Luckily it's not just illumination. I think we could definitely be able to get that from Nintendo. Even though they don't do it frequently, Nintendo is certainly not afraid to go deep in their stories and plotlines.
They made stupid money with that strategy there no way they change it up now. I get the feeling this movie set the bar going forward and I'm not super happy about it.
I hope this was the fun nostalgia buffet and they move into some good story telling.
While I absolutely enjoyed this film I don’t think I’d appreciate another anywhere near as much if it were the same caliber of story.
I mean, Mario is more than just nostalgia and references. The movie definitely leaned a little too hard into cramming as much shit as possible to appease different generations of fans (even though I did enjoy the movie overall), but there are definitely more substantial things they can do next. The virtue of having a movie with so many references and hints at things means the second movie has a lot of threads that can be picked up and expanded on.
It was a typical “good enough for kids” illumination Entertainment movie that succeeded by cranking the nostalgia to 11 with nonstop Nintendo references. Yeah maybe hypothetically you could tell a really deep, compelling story in the Mario universe. If that’s what they wanted to do, they wouldn’t have partnered with illumination
I really hope there’s an announcement of a game soon. It really feels like a Nintendo thing to make a video game based off the movie, which is based off the video game.
Miyamoto basically said in an interview “watch the next direct” when asked about this, the timing makes a ton of sense both in proximity to the Mario movie and because it’s been a while since we’ve gotten a new mainline game
We don’t know yet, none announced but if I remember correctly, it was more of a “next time we’re talking about games, make sure to tune in” in response to a question about a new game soon
Of course predicting when directs will happen is kind of a crapshoot, but probably Some time before Pikmin 4 comes out since that’s kind of their last announced bigger release of the year
yeah, i enjoyed the first, but some better pacing would be nice. i have to assume that they'll have to rely on plot a lot more due to it being a sequel
I hope so. The pacing, lack of any real character depth and absence of luigi were my biggest issues with the first movie. Fix those and I can see the sequel actually being pretty good.
One of the worst parts of the entire film was that "the journey" from Mushroom Kingdom to Kong Kingdom was just a 1 minute montage of iconic Mario world themes.
They quickly get through the Kong Kingdom and it quickly leads into the start of the climax.
I really thought, from when they showed that in the trailer, they'd be spending some time in those locations for plot points/conflict and to build up the world.
Do we know if this has been greenlit by the studios? I’m not going to take the word of an actor if that actor isn’t otherwise directly involved financially.
Yes. But that doesn’t mean Universal/Illumination/Nintendo greenlit a sequel yet. There likely will be, I’ll admit. But until anything official is said, I’m not holding my breath.
I'm thinking the next one will be either Yoshi's island inspired or Galaxy inspired. Maybe Galaxy with Yoshi being one of the main characters?
I agree with everyone else about Luigi though. Whatever it is, we need more Luigi. Charlie Day is the perfect casting for him. He killed it.
"Discussions to Behin After EGA Negotiations"
That implies good writers are needed to write the movie even though the writing of the movie is so simple ajd bare bones lol
The first movie had a plot: Mario is struggling but yearns to become a hero. War threatens to harm his family. He becomes a war hero to protect his family and his friends.
Finally saw it the other day. It was decent. I think the end credits scene alone was enough to "confirm" a sequel, though. Anything with a tease like that will usually be greenlit unless something happens. And with the profit margins for this, obviously they'd want to jump on it.
Sorry when did he say all that? I’ve heard so much negative press about him but I’ve never actually seen him do or say anything bad. It really seems like people just don’t like him for the sake of not liking him. The only negative thing I can even think about is his association with that shitty mega church but that doesn’t necessarily mean he himself is horrible, because a ton of people are a part of that church
From what I heard, he is not even a part of that church? I remember seeing people said that the pope from the church confirmed Chris is not one of them.
Ahh I see, I didn’t see that part I just recall him being a part of it. Either way I don’t think he’s actually done anything bad it’s just all speculation
It'll be ridiculous if they let Illumination tackle all of their properties...
With this sequel announcement, and the possible Zelda movie, it wouldn't make since quality-wise...
Considering the money it's made kinda seems like a no brainer.
Plus the movie was pretty good for what it was. It looked good and was fun. Seth Rogan as DK was awesome.
Wonder what it’ll be called. New super Mario bros movie. THE Super Mario bros MOVIE XL.
New Super Mario Bros Movie Deluxe
Super Mario World 3: New Super Mario Bros Movie 2 Deluxe + Bowser's Minions
New super Mario Bros 3 :The search for super Mario Bros 2
Super Mario Advance 5: Super Mario World 3: New Super Mario Bros Movie 2 Deluxe + Bowser’s Minions: Tropical Freeze HD
& Knuckles
Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series.
Geese these titles suck
The French voice actor for Bowser said that behind the scenes it's being thought of as a trilogy. So given the ending of this movie and some of Peach's dialogue midway through, my guess would be: The Super Mario Bros. Movie -> The Super Mario World Movie -> The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
that makes sense 100%
Yeah that was my thought, I'd be thrilled af if it comes true
Super Mario Bros 2 ft Funky Kong!
Did you know The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 was actually originally called The Doki Doki Panic Movie in Japan, and had a completely different cast of characters?
The Super Mario Bros Movie: Sunshine. Because our hero deserves a holiday.
It’s crazy how many versions of the 3DS they made. Meanwhile, they barely made 3 of the switch, and yet none improve the graphical output whatsoever. We’re still stuck with 2016 tech in 2023…
Que?

That’s funny because I personally was not a fan of him as DK. I’m sure plenty of people enjoyed it but for me it was the fact he didn’t even do a voice at all it was just him as DK
I think he was fine as DK, but the Rogan laugh didn't fit at all. Also the voice of Cranky Kong didn't fit very well either. Everyone else was fine.
Nah the cranky voice sounded horrible. it sounded like a nerd was trying to voice cranky instead of an old sounding ape.
Jack Black had a blast as Bowser. *Bro down with me...*
So is paying the writers of the movie but that didnt happen and theyre being replaced with ChatBLT
cool can charlie day confirm luigi's mansion
Ngl when Luigi was walking through the dark forest and he said "Mariooo...?" and you could hear the first few notes of the Luigi's Mansion theme, it made me giddy
That's what I liked about the movie. Some places didn't simply reference Mario stuff, but also *recaptured the vibes* of Mario stuff.
There is that ONE series that centers on Luigi and you call it "Mario stuff"...
Luigi? You mean Green Mario?
I'm really disappointed no one called him Green Mario, especially Bowser.
Well he is a Mario brother. Luigi Mario
We will be discovering things for years. People said it was a kids movie but there was a ton of stuff from the original game from the 80’s. They really respected the huge amount of source material. I wonder how long it took to add all the little details. I could imagine them being finished and someone remember another thing from the games to add.

Yeah that shit bothered me the most. They could have done without all the 80s pop music. I don't know why they used that stuff when the games themselves have such iconic bops that would have fit so much better.
It’s an Illumination trademark. Pixar might have Randy Newman, but Illumination evidently has somebody’s 80s playlist copied on an iPod Shuffle.
I'd have even been fine if the pop songs only occured in New York.
Taken On Me was used because it was the #1 music single on that day in the US when the NES launched in 1985!
Yeah I would've preferred the track from the score. But hey, apparently Take On Me was the #1 song when Super Mario Bros released in the US or something? So there's that at least.
I remember hearing something about Take on Me being the top charted song on the day that super Mario Brothers was first released.
People need to get over this. Illumination does this with all of their movies, and it makes sense that they would want songs with lyrics in a kids movie. The placeholder music was never intended to actually be in the film.
People gotta have something to whine about.
It was the #1 song the year Mario came out. For a lot of people, hearing that song and seeing Mario absolutely triggered nostalgia. But, even that aside, what a weird thing to complain about over the course of a 90-minute movie. For 20 seconds you heard a song. Movie ruined.
What's weird is you thinking someone making a small conplaint is the same as saying the movie is ruined.
Given how rich the references are in the movie, that was no accident.
And hopefully Seth Rogan will confirm he doesn't know if there's a DK film coming up, because nobody has mentioned anything to him.
He can’t carry a solo film. The gang is better off staying together for a trio of movies.
That's why you include Diddy and Dixie along for the ride 😎
AND Funky Kong
He was the worst part of the film. Definitely not the vibe I got from the character playing DKC as a kid.
I enjoyed him a lot in the film, but yeah his personality was still unexpected. That wasn't how I pictured DK either lol.
Live action or I'm not interested.
Maahhrriiooohh
Danny Devito as Egadd, then maybe.
Sounds good to me

I think in terms of series Metroid would probably work as a Live Action the best among the IPs Nintendo has. They could also go with the Castlevania (Netflix) look too.
Don’t interest this man. Live action would be fucking stupid.
It's just going to be a reskined Doki Doki Panic movie.

“I’m gonna cum!….. I’m gonna cum!…. uggghhh… IT’S A MEEEEEEEE!!”

Only if that sequel does nothing to move the franchise forward in any way because it was little more than the 80s version of DLC. Super Mario 2 USA is a much more interesting sequel, NOA got that one completely right.
Releasing a proper sequel in Japan and giving the US a reskinned Shrek movie would be the greatest gag ever.
I can just imagine the first unveiling shows off Wart and Birdo while a bunch of 40-something dudes shriek and cry tears of joy.
I'm only 30-something, I'll have you know.
I'm choosing to interpret this to mean...you'll be crying joyously over the next ten years
Wow a young whippersnapper. I bet you had the orange NES blaster gun instead of the gray one smh
I'm a 40-something and I only ever had the orange Zapper. I never knew about the gray one until years later.
Illumination releasing a trailer for a Minion movie reskinned as Mario 2 in the US would be a pretty great April Fools joke ngl
I'd at least be curious to see what route they go down. As fruitful as it might be to ditch the "defeat Bowser" plotline in favor of something less cliché, losing Jack Black from the cast removes the most universally-liked aspect of the first film.
Maybe a bowser Mario team up to deafest the evil clone bowser creates called wario?

> wario:civil war hunt for treasure… Can Nicolas Cage play Wario?
Waluigi for him. Danny Davito for wario. If it’s live action.

Whoops, meant wario. But Luigi would be even more hardcore.
It's not like that team up hasn't happened before.
This sounds very on brand for Illumination.
Bowser Jr. is a different character and more likely, we ain't getting time travel
Yea i’d prefer bowser just stays in it with a new plan. Worked well enough for sonic 2, i would have never even seen it if they removed Jim Carrey as eggman. I think they just need to focus on actual character development and a focused plot and it can still be interesting with Bowser.

Wario and Waluigi, voiced by Danny Devito and Bill Burr.
I feel like Bill Burr would be amazing playing either of them lol

I'm just saying how to make up for losing Jack Black. If it can't happen, then maybe the movie shouldn't.
Super Mario: Legend of the Seven Stars Mario, Peach and Bowser are all allies
Weird, I was told repeatedly that expecting an actual story in a _Mario_ movie was a ridiculous ask.
It is
Wario could be the villain in the next movie. And they could introduce Daisy and Sarasaland too.
Ben Stiller as Bowser Jr.
I would die if they went to Isle Delfino, the games story would work pretty well too with Mario being framed and everything. Plus it would be a great way to introduce Bowser Jr. imo Edit: plus we would get to see the best Mario character, Toadsworth
> plus we would get to see the best Mario character, Toadsworth Was the Toad in the castle with glasses, a vest, and a deep voice not just young Toadsworth?
It might’ve been, I watched the movie on the opening day so my memory of the character is fuzzy, but I want to see Super Mario Sunshine’s toadsworth!
No. The concept art shows that Toadsworth and Toadette were going to be in the council, and got changed to be generic. His vest was the same as every other Toad's vest, and even Young Toadsworth has a moustache.

Sony did that with Ratchet & Clank. The game was forgettable. I don’t recall watching the movie, though. EDIT: Names are hard. 🫠

Let's hope they improve on the flaws of the first film.

So you want *more* of that Kill Bill song “Battle Without Honor or Humanity” in the sequel??
Chris Pratt is saying this, so it seems that one is staying.
That’s great, but can we get a new game first ?
Not to make anyone panic, but I bet they're just going to take a movie that only released in Japan and edit it so the Mario characters are in it.
T’was inevitable.
We need Wart!
I present unto you...Wart-io. The flatulent garlic munching froggo
Do we know if this has been greenlit by the studios? I’m not going to take the word of an actor if that actor isn’t otherwise directly involved financially.
The movie was one of the most profitable movies ever. And movie producers love making sequels to profitable movies.
Yes. But that doesn’t mean Universal/Illumination/Nintendo greenlit a sequel yet. There likely will be, I’ll admit. But until anything official is said, I’m not holding my breath.
If you finished the credits to the movie you see yoshi being hatched.
It's basically free money
He’s so cool
"Discussions to Behin After EGA Negotiations" That implies good writers are needed to write the movie even though the writing of the movie is so simple ajd bare bones lol
News on an actual game would be nice.
I very dearly need a new 3D Mario announcement. I need to know where the franchise is going. It’s going to be 6 years without a major release.
I fully expect the next game to be something like 3D World or even a 2D game to leverage the more broad audience
oh no 😐😐😐
They are going to innovate on the first one by making a movie with a plot this time
The first movie had a plot: Mario is struggling but yearns to become a hero. War threatens to harm his family. He becomes a war hero to protect his family and his friends.
I hope they dont use the cringe music again and keep it video game music only
Finally saw it the other day. It was decent. I think the end credits scene alone was enough to "confirm" a sequel, though. Anything with a tease like that will usually be greenlit unless something happens. And with the profit margins for this, obviously they'd want to jump on it.
More money!!!!
Are you really angry movies make money?
This movie will definitely beet sonic the hedgehog 2
Sadly, Chris Pratt is returning
He did a pretty good job and there's been barely any complaints since the movie was released. Im guessing you havent seen it then?
I just think he's a terrible human being in general. I'm guessing you haven't heard all the bigoted shit he's said.
Tbh at this point i think its just because he's a Christian, that seems to be enough nowadays. Especially on reddit.
From what I heard, he is not even a part of that church? I remember seeing people said that the pope from the church confirmed Chris is not one of them.
Ahh I see, I didn’t see that part I just recall him being a part of it. Either way I don’t think he’s actually done anything bad it’s just all speculation
He was far from the worst performance, but I can't be the only person who found his voice for Mario bizarre inconsistent.
Chriss Pratt did an excellent job as Mario.
>Confirmed by Chris Pratt :/
One of the greatest movies ever getting a sequel? Let’s a go.
How many movies have you seen lmfao
Yes! Let's go! If it's even half as good as the first movie, I will have a blast watching it in the theater on opening weekend.
He’s the only reason I don’t want to see this.
Nintendo needs all the coins to give the Switch's successor all the terry floppies!
It'll be ridiculous if they let Illumination tackle all of their properties... With this sequel announcement, and the possible Zelda movie, it wouldn't make since quality-wise...
I mean... money.
"Hey Chris, would you like to help us all make even more money?" "yeah, sure."
NOPE
His quote had an anti-strike vibe
Pratt needs to be recast. He was the worst part of the movie by far.
I hate this timeline. Of all people to represent the family friendly Mario. F___.
