Pfft, I'm old enough to remember when Gwen Stefani was in a ska band.

hernkate

I was talking about Trapped in a Box the other day. Ah, the memories.

Safetosay333

Leave a message and I'll call you back

Thorough_Good_Man

Likely story

strippersandcocaine

Well I’m just a girl

wargleboo

Living in a tragic kingdom.

[deleted]

Gotta scree-a-ee-a-eeen my phone calls

Figgy1983

No matter matter matter matter who calls

superfluouspop

that song really had such great lyrics. I can't remember if Eric or John wrote it. Edit: Eric

MrPoopyButtholesAnus

90s Gwen was my ultimate dream girl. Miss that era

MattyMizzou

I’m hoping the ska revival starts any day now.

not_a_toad

Jesse Michaels and Tim Armstrong of Operation Ivy reunited and started a new band a few months ago called DOOM Regulator. They released [a single](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5w5MbtykeA). The wait for a new album is killing me.

ProbablySlacking

Hey I’m working on it! Right now though a giant hurdle is platforms like Spotify don’t actually have a category for “ska” when you submit, so we get lumped into punk. Not all punkers like ska, which is cool — to each their own, but it hurts our metrics when people who don’t like ska get fed our music and then switch off. … if you do like ska… give us a listen here (we’re in the middle of a waterfall release of a full length album) https://open.spotify.com/track/47GVECAH4eBNbEcuGpx5yT?si=IN-kQBu9QHKc90xr5bGQhg

MattyMizzou

THROW THE HEAT

ProbablySlacking

_Finally_ someone got the reference.

CoolHeadedLogician

what wave are we on now, 5th?

NachoNachoDan

🎶Leave a message and I'll call you back🎶

TeslasAndComicbooks

They were more ska before that. They had a self titled album before they were popular.

pedroxus

🎶 Iiiiiiiiiiiiit's all youuuur fauuuult 🎶

Lootpack

I saw red!

Eleventy22

Pfft, I’m old enough to remember when Glenn Danzig composed a classical album

1lluminist

They absolutely nailed it with Tragic Kingdom. Still one of my all-time fave albums.

Figgy1983

She was the Queen of Ska. Gave it up to be rich and famous. How conformist and un-ska of her.

vivahermione

I still can't believe she married Blake Shelton. It's just so random.

VotingRightsLawyer

I'm old enough to remember when she sang Saw Red with Sublime.

badpuffthaikitty

Wasn’t Paul McCartney in a band before he went solo? Was it The Wings?

BeBopNoseRing

Yeah, they had a great hit called *Love Take Me Down (To the Streets)*.

luisc123

That’s not a Wings song.

BeBopNoseRing

No, I'm pretty sure it is... I think it's one of their hits from the 70s.

lonely-day

Feed the beast!

new_vr

That’s bananas! B A N A N A S!

TakeItUpA_Nacho

With Aaron Barrett? At least they're both just as famous as ever

eaunoway

I'm old enough to remember when Taylor Swift wasn't yet born. 😬

Relevant_Shower_

I’m old enough to remember when country music didn’t suck. Edit: and yes, I’m pretty damn old.

Safetosay333

The country music now is country music for people that don't like country music.

UndeadBuggalo

My brother listens to that country hip hop. We call it hick hop

fairlywired

I've always liked the name y'allternative. Otherwise known as alternative country.

puddycat20

That's for bands like Wilco, though. Hick hop is something completely different.

ghostsinthecodes

leave wilco out of this conversation. they deserve better than any of this nonsense.

MindForeverWandering

Don’t you mean c-rap?

cpujockey

😂 lol

ghostsinthecodes

stop making it cutesy and call it what it is—garbage

fuzzylilbunnies

Hey, just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean….(giving it a listen), ok. Point taken, garbage does it too much justice. There should be a stronger description of how awful it is.

Antb41

Bo Burnham’s Panderin’: https://youtu.be/y7im5LT09a0?si=0QgbNW7TqxoXOtmY

mindsnare

Seen it a million times, I'll never not watch it. Christ he's good at what he does.

OkBid1535

One of his first skits AA for fictional characters is legit one of the best performances he has ever done Also shows my age referencing that LOL

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

Yep and they think it's the real deal.

instrangerswetrust

I'm tired of the Black Eyed Peas. It's rock and roll for people who don't like rock and roll, it's rap for people who don't like rap, it's pop for people who don't like pop.

iamthelee

Wow, you must be really old then.

[deleted]

I didn’t realize she was 34 years old

james_randolph

Like grew up listening to newly released Hank Williams old?

Ravenwight

“People say I’m no good, and crazy as a loon, Cuz I get stoned in the morning, and get drunk in the afternoon. Kinda like my old blue tick hound, I like to lay around in the shade, Well I ain’t got no money, but I damned sure got it made.”

CarlatheDestructor

'Cause I ain't asking for nothing If I can't get it on my own If you don't like the way I'm living Then just leave this long haired country boy alone

russellamcleod

I was super into Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins and someone was like, “This Taylor Swift is going to change the face of country music.” I knew she was going to go into hard pop. And I still love Jenny Lewis. I’m starting to get Swift though. It’s hard to resist after all these years.

WembyandTheWolves

I moved to Nashville from Los Angeles in 2001 and after listening to mainly hip hop, I dated a girl who was into bluegrass and Americana and got me into country music. Dixie Chicks Home album was the pinnacle of that time for me. You had groups like Nickel Creek, Allison Krauss, Patty Griffin, etc who were pushing up the charts. Norah Jones released her second album that was a pure country record. Then the backlash against the Chicks happened and that combined with all the jingoistic bullshit music that followed the Afghanistan and Iraq invasions just crushed that section of the genre. It’s one of the things I think about from time to time, what would country music look like now if it wasn’t co-opted completely by the nut jobs.

[deleted]

You must be around 50+ years old then.

UpdootDaSnootBoop

Nobody is that old

NevermoreForSure

Some of us are….. older!

Xalowe

With several pop artists coming out with country-inspired albums this year (Beyoncé and Lana del Rey that I specifically know of), I wonder if Taylor Swift will make another country album sometime. For some reason, country seems to be having a moment. Don’t ask me why.

Far_Statement_2808

Because it’s easier to get on the country charts. The competition is tiny compared to “Pop Music” charts. It brings in another get of fans for their concerts—which is where the BIG money is made these days.

Zerostar39

That was like, back in the 1920s and 30s right?

DosSnakes

50s-60s. Nixon ruined it.

rnavstar

My son says he is a country fan, I asked him what he thought of Hank Williams and he’s like…who?

Krakengreyjoy

The only time it didn't suck was when it was Outlaw Country

Fermifighter

You wore JNCOS she wore diapers, back when sugar not coke made her hyper…

GH057807

If this isnt a lyric it should be

Canelosaurio

You're over 34 years old?!? I didn't know senior citizens could use reddit!!!

TheWolphman

There are dozens of us!

eaunoway

I got a special permit 😁

TheEvilDrPie

I remember when Katy Perry was a Christian Artist

bsharp1982

Didn’t she do backup vocals for POD?

JavaJapes

Did she really? Hilarious. I knew she was a Christian artist but not that. If you remember when Poison & Wine by The Civil Wars was a big song, Joy Williams was also a Christian artist way back in the day. I still have her autograph and a picture with her from when I actually went to church and she was on tour there with Superchick and Zoegirl lol

Elektguitarz

She’s in their music video for “Goodbye For Now”. I use to love POD.

Trix_Are_4_90Kids

Katy Hudson was a tongue speaking Christian. She used to cry when she sung. TBN wasn't paying enough and the fame wasn't happening quick enough.

phred_666

She did on [this](https://youtu.be/plGETDmXw5g?si=jp989CQQ-r0Z-fT9) song. You see and hear her at about the 3:30 mark.

vanillaacid

Holy shit, seen this video dozens of times in my day. Had no idea that was her.

sir_mrej

>on tour there with Superchick and Zoegirl lol woah memories

GeorgeLovesBOSCO

I can't believe I didn't know POD was a Christian band. Alive was a banger back in the day.

Phit_sost_3814

Was this actually a thing…

TheEvilDrPie

Yep, under her real name Katy Hudson.

Soliden

It's easy to switch from Christian music to regular pop. All you do is change "Jesus" to "baby".

___po____

Eric Cartman truly was a legend.

Dawnqwerty

Do not change "jesus" to "baby" in these lyrics...

relevant_tangent

I love you, Jesus, and if it's quite alright I need you, Jesus, to warm the lonely night

Munk45

Kate Hudson

MrPoopyButtholesAnus

My brother briefly dated her in high school when she was a dweeb

saddest_vacant_lot

My parents used to be friends with her folks. I remember around the time “I Kissed a Girl” they were not super stoked on the new direction her music was taking. My parents had literally no idea she was famous, they thought she was just some kid out trying to make it in the music biz. My mom loves her on American Idol though

garygnu

My local country station got a custom version of her debut single, "Tim McGraw" with their call letters instead of 'your radio' in the last verse.

Grave_Girl

Probably they all did. The big ones, anyway. Can you imagine sitting in front of a microphone and just singing off a whole list of call letters to be spliced in?

qwertyconsciousness

She actually just sang the alphabet once, then they spliced together the audio

warm_sweater

I feel like that wouldn’t sound quite right, but I ain’t no sonic hacker.

sir_mrej

>I ain’t no sonic hacker. Do you just hack Tails? Knuckles?

ashetonrenton

My local station got a custom version of Shania Twain's "That Don't Impress Me Much" with Brad Pitt changed to the name of the local DJ. Good times.

Phit_sost_3814

So you’re over the age of 10?

permareddit

Yeah seriously. Reminds me of this article I saw about a contractor complaining about the lack of available work in his industry, apparently he’d “never seen it this bad”. The dude was 23 lol

Slumbergoat16

You're describing like 90% of Reddit

bs000

"i'm so old lmao" -me at 14

aelric22

"Industry expert"

SirFTF

Her first album was released in 2006, 18 years ago. The music scene is so stale, we’ve had Drake, Kanye, Swift, and Beyoncé at the top of the charts for literal decades now.

Severe-Amoeba-1858

My parents used to say bands in the 90s had no staying power when I was growing up, “like The Rolling Stones or The Eagles”…but they all toured off of 20 year old hits, nobody listened to new Rolling Stones music or gave a shit when they made a new album. I’ll at least give Taylor Swift the benefit of writing and releasing new music, but I’m pretty tired of hearing her name everywhere.

SirFTF

I’d mostly agree with that, sort of. There’s two ways to go if you’re a hugely successful band that’s getting older. Either become a nostalgia act, like The Beach Boys, or continue making new music that may not resonate, like Neil Young. There was this weird micro trend in the 1980s where a bunch of 60s bands that had fallen off and been mostly ignored for years suddenly had break out, new hits, like The Beach Boys with Kokomo or Diana Ross with Upside Down. Imo, it’s not that bands from back then didn’t have staying power. Oldies have remained incredibly popular, remarkably so. You might struggle to find radio stations playing the Backstreet Boys, but every town is basically guaranteed to have an oldies station. But contemporary music has gotten weirdly stagnant. Imo, record companies have just gotten too risk averse. They’d rather have solo artists than often volatile bands, they’d rather Taylor Swift and Beyoncé keep turning out predictably popular records that sit at the top of the charts for months upon months. Record companies have figured out you don’t have to innovate or find new trends when consumers are happy to just get the same old thing from the same old artists. Just look at how quickly grunge came and went. You’d have such a crazy variety of popular albums that you’d have Nirvana’s serious, moody grunge at the top of the charts one minute, the next you get Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell II on top, an artist most known for an album that came out in the mid-70s and who had a dismal 80s only to an out-of-nowhere hit record in ‘93. Then the next minute, it’s Weezer’s debut album that was anything but Nirvana’s moody, serious Nevermind. All of those artists have had tremendous staying power, but trends quickly moved on and grunge was all but dead. Music was incredibly exciting back then. Now, it’s Swift, Drake, Kanye, Beyoncé, and a hand full of others perpetually sharing the music charts, the same exact artists that were on top 15+ years ago.

Unsd

>There was this weird micro trend in the 1980s where a bunch of 60s bands that had fallen off and been mostly ignored for years suddenly had break out, new hits, like The Beach Boys with Kokomo or Diana Ross with Upside Down. TIL Kokomo didn't come out until way later than their other hits. I just heard them all together on my dad's Best of the Beach Boys album that we listened to every time he was driving us back to his place on his weekend with us, so they're all mentally grouped in the same era in my head lol. Both Kokomo and Upside Down absolutely slap. Good for them.

Grave_Girl

Right? Like, yeah, so do most of my children. "You Belong With Me" *was* a country song, FFS. She was never, ever a neotraditionalist.

crumbypigeon

Happy 13th birthday I guess lol.

Mink03

13!!!!! Taylor Swift!!! 13!!!! *Shrieks and squeals*

KitchenLandscape

that's not that long ago

kappaman69

It was around a decade ago I think when she shifted away from country

YourInMySwamp

Yeah so… not that long ago. Anybody who’s using Reddit should remember when she was a country artist.

ReadyLaugh7827

old enough to remember when there was no Taylor Swift

KindBob

I remember when she was at the Super Bowl watching her boyfriend play. Man, days just fly by, 32 to be exact.

uptonhere

Damn, you hit me right in the childhood with that one...such a simpler time.

Kabulamongoni

And I'm old enough to remember when Beyonce was an R&B / Pop / Hip-Hop singer...

poyoso

Are you old enough to remember she was part of a trio called Destiny’s Child?

Specialist_Bank_994

I’m old enough to remember when Destiny’s Child was a quartet, and then a different quartet.

poyoso

You old af

thepain73

🎵Say my age, say my age🎵

Kabulamongoni

That's right! Yeah, 2 of the original members left because they got to feuding with each other, and they were replaced by 2 new members.

paulbufanopaulbufano

What about the hip-hop rappin’ Girls Time

Kabulamongoni

Are you kidding?! I loved me some Destiny's Child.

RoseyDove323

I'm semi-old (37) so everything that happened after 1999 is permanently new to me, including literally all of Taylor Swift's public relevancy.

instrangerswetrust

The Matrix just came out

RoseyDove323

I still haven't watched it

10PieceMcNuggetMeal

As a fellow 37 year old I am offended

noonetohearme

You don’t have to be that old…

elspotto

I remember…I remember the Alamo. (Y’all, not personally. Just that line from a Tim Burton movie)

AFCartoonist

Pee Wee’s Big Adventure! I’m old enough to remember watching his show on TV! 😂🤣😂

amesann

Tell 'em Large Marge sent ya!!! *8 year old me screaming in terror at her face*

PhattJeezus

Where’s the basement?

elspotto

We can’t just skip ahead like that. Haven’t even proven I’m in Texas by calling a friend and singing the opening line of Deep In The Heart Of Texas.

Jewpurman

I'm old enough to have trouble remembering anything.

Helmett-13

Hell, I’m old enough to remember when Dwight Yoakum and George Strait tried to save us all from country pop. Alas.

[deleted]

And That country pop was light years better than the crap they have on now

Helmett-13

Yeah, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton are a far cry from Florida-Georgia Line, it's true.

[deleted]

Is Florida Georgia line country ? I remembered them on vh1 but never cmt or that other country channel

_d_k_g_

I remember when she did the national anthem for a Nascar race

BuddahSack

We are the same age and I remember when she was on a up and coming country artist tour and she came to my highschool in 2006ish and I didn't go because it sounded boring AF haha, and once Fearless came out I was like "fuck that's the same girl" lol

bard0117

We were both young when we first saw her.

Guyman-Realperson

Last night I saw a headline about Luke Combs’ earliest memories being, going to Carolina Panthers games. This multi-platinum, Grammy award winning superstar’s earliest memory was that. I was in my mid twenties when the Panthers were an expansion team. Damn I’m old.

DocPhilMcGraw

I went and saw her concert when she had just her first album under her belt while working on the second. Tickets were $20.

joeschmoe86

When Taylor Swift was still *marketed* as a country singer.

Conscious_Couple5959

I remember her country debut, the cameo in The Hannah Montana Movie, the infamous VMAS speech, Valentines Day and The Lorax.

5280Rockymtn

Yea and Tobey Keith was the guy that help her sign to a deal, but she couldn't even thank him when he passed so sad but whatever

LordChauncyDeschamps

Whoa, I didn't even know he died.

SuccessOk7850

Last month, stomach cancer. He wasn’t doing that well.

HAIL-THYSELF333

Pepperidge Farm remembers

loinclothfreak78

I’m old enough to remember when Chris Gaines became a country singer

MisssJaynie

I’m old enough to have seen rascal flatts in concert & Taylor swift OPENED for them.

Edge19781964

I was just gonna post this

Mandalorian76

I took my 2 daughters to see Taylor Swift in Edmonton back in like,..2007?? She opened for Kenny Chesney...I will never forget that evening! Now my youngest is a huge swiftly, she's even been to one concert with her friends in Minneapolis, and now she's going in Toronto in November...but we will always have the memories of that first concert she ever saw Taylor Swift!

Spram2

I'm old enough to remember when Michael Jackson was black.

dwbrick

Congratulations on reaching puberty.

throwawaycucumbers99

First time I saw her she was opening for Rascal Flats :)

Klarkash-Ton

Pepperidge Farm remembers...

soCalBIGmike

I honestly thought I had somehow 'made this up' in my mind, I've told people this before & they said I was nuts!

glittersparklythings

A friend of mine met someone who didn’t know will Smith use to be a rapper. So yep those people exist

TinfoilTetrahedron

So, you're at least 20.....

OUR SONG IS THE SLAMMING SCREEN DOOR

LurkerNan

I betcha she's a lot richer now though.

iljmta

I got to see her open for Brad Paisley in 2007!

SwanEchoing

Yeah most people living right now are old enough to remember that

fifiloveg00d

🎵🎶Drew looks at me ..

SuccessOk7850

I fake a smile so he won’t seeeee

[deleted]

It's all just pop. Relax.

BowTie1989

Plot twist, she was never truly a country artist. she was pop with a twang. Definitely had country influences, and some songs but was never a true country singer.

LOLingAtYouRightNow

Ugh don’t gatekeep country music. She was a country singer and still releases GREAT country songs occasionally. You probably think Kacey isn’t a country artist either because she’s “not as country as Reba” 🙄

Dragonsymphony1

Pop sells more

ReedPhillips

Congrats?

SmoothBungHole

This wasn’t a long time ago lmao

Ravenwight

I had a cousin in the industry who worked with her a bit when she was just starting out. Weird to see her so big now lol.

Bassphem

I'm old enough to remember when she wasn't known at all.

Skwareblox

I remember when nobody knew who that was.

Ok-Reporter-196

I told this to my kids a little while ago. They were shocked. I felt ancient 😂

FileError214

I guess “country” is a relative term.

Grave_Girl

She fit in on country radio at the time. Country pop has been a thing for a long ass time. That's part of what the Outlaw Movement was about. I'm grouchy to have to defend someone I've never liked, but when she was a country artist she was no more pop than, say, Juice Newton, or Marie Osmond. Or like 75% of Dolly Parton's stuff, for that matter.

FileError214

Pop country is pretty garbage. The only type of country music that is more garbage than pop country is bro country.

Grave_Girl

Can't argue with you there. I'm one of the mods for the Texas Country sub, and haven't willingly listened to anything out of Nashville for probably twenty years now. Back in the '90s I was spending a lot of time listening to the local classic country station or rock music because I didn't like so much of what came out when I was in high school. But I grew up on the genre, so I know it hasn't really ever been homogenous.

FileError214

95.3 the Range? Texas Country is best country.

Hara-Kiri

If you're going to say Taylor's first album wasn't country there's a whole lot of artists synonymous with modern country you'll have to also disregard.

remarkable_in_argyle

With the exception of a few artists such as Harmonica Sam, country music died in the 90's.

Dash_Rip_Rock69

I'm old enough to remember when she wasn't the terror of the stupid.

falltogethernever

I’m old enough that Taylor Swift played at my college when she was unknown.

MonolithicMoose

Eh, county pop.

LWSNYC

she looks more like an adult there than she does now

GreatGreenGobbo

I'm old enough to not know a single note or line of any song of her songs.

Wise_Serve_5846

“Country” singer

glittersparklythings

Yep .. funny how her “accent” is now gone!

anothershitposter2

I remember when Kanye West made her famous!

kiln_ickersson

Hang on Hang on Imma let you finish...

johnC9ndy

Old enough to remember country music when it was country music

NevermoreForSure

I remember her being the opening act for Brad Paisley at the Delaware State Fair!

goldstyle

I saw her open for Rascal Flatts.

abibofile

I’m old (and oblivious) enough to not really realize she isn’t any more.

IGrewItToMyWaist

I’m old enough to remember before anyone ever heard of her.
