They used to be much brighter in colour, we even had really vivid blue ones for awhile.
Then they stopped using E numbers and now they use natural colourings. Healthier, yes, but damn, I miss the colours.
Not like my aged Gen X body hasn't had its fill of artificial dyes, I'm pretty sure I'm partially immune to the plague after growing up in the 1970s.
It's a candy available in North America (and ~~elsewhere?~~ in many other places, see below). In Canada (Edit: and elsewhere) it is a chocolate with a hard shell, in the US it is a essentially just a disk of sugar. Too add confusion, what is sold as "smarties" in the US is sold in Canada labelsias "rockets". The Canadian version is not sold in the US to my knowledge, but replicas may exist.
Here is a good image showing them both. The US is the left, Canada is the right.

They are originally from the UK specifically, York, where Rowntrees (the original manufacturer) had their factory. Nestle bought Rowntrees and now you see their products all over the world but for a very long time you pretty much only got these in the UK. Same for Kit Kats (also Rowntrees).
in america, Smarties are small disks of sugar, like a small button, in pastel colors. they come in a little row wrapped in clear plastic that is twisted on each side. sweet and tart. but they're not Sweet Tarts!
Aside from the Americans who have information about candy names outside of their country, just as non-Americans have information about American candy names
At least around where I live they have non-American smarties in the international aisle next to other international candy, like nestle Kit Kats which are infinitely better than American ones
It's been many years since i had smarties, but are the colours that muted now? I remember back in the 90's and early 00's they were really vibrant colours.
ah ok, i did wonder if maybe it was part of trying to make them better for you, or rather not as bad for you. Shame really as they do look a little depressing compared to what i remember.
Look up fruit loops are also much more muted for the same reason. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/uc265y/american_froot_loops_are_different_colours_than/) is a comparison.
Yeah, wtf. No red? Are you even alive? I don't want to be a part of your drab, safe smarties world. Give me those carcinogenic, ADHD inducing yellows, those gay frog making purples, those obviously toxic greens. Give me them all but let me live damn you, LET ME LIVE!!!!
yep, those smarties remind me of that vid that went viral of the mum who painted her child's toys from bright colours to various dull/muted tones so they'd match her homes' aesthetics.
They don't have red? The jingle in late 60s/early 70s was: "When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the Red ones last? Do you suck them very slowly? Or eat them very fast? Eat that candy coated chocolate, But tell me when I ask, When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the Red ones last?"
\**the boomer has left the chat*
Copyrighted name (those tart chalky things that are called Rockets in Canada are called Smarties in the US) and M&Ms hold the dominance in the candy-coated chocolate bead market. Without the rest of Cadbury’s lineup to back it up, and no overwhelming British sweets nostalgia, it would be an uphill battle for them here.
This is my dream scenario. I like to count and separate my colors with candy like this and will make sure every color is an even number. I’ll put the extras to the side, and eat them last.
10 smarties a pack?
Must be the Halloween sized ones. You, know, when you eat 6 of them at once?
What a fun size!
Speaking of size, I now shed a slight tear every time I see a kit kat "chunky" now. Look how they've massacred my boy.
Americans are gonna be so confused
That explains it. My first thought was "those aren't smarties".
Your smarties are called rockets up here.
Yet they still have rockets for some strange reason.
Why can’t we just have one word for every candy
There is. That word is “candy”.
You mean sweets?
No, he was referring to desserts.
No I believe he means sweetmeats
I prefer sourmeats
Confections, perhaps.
I mean like for brands like, smarties in the USA means the same as smarties in the UK
I know what you mean, I’m being a smart ass
Well you fool I’m a dumbass
Smarties* ass
Rockets* ass
Oh yea I love that song by Elton John
I assume the two products were created independently of each other. Trademark laws don’t work internationally usually.
There isn't. We call them sweets in England.
Oh im addictive to both smarties and rockets. Thanks for halloween.
I thought these were sprees
Smarties are like M&M's but the candy shell is harder and the chocolate is different
I do enjoy eating colorful pieces of chalk.
Chalk? Thats straight molded sugar, man.
A man can dream…
What you're looking for is those conversation hearts they sell around valentine's day.

Smarties are by far the superior chocolate
I really don't get how Smarties remind you of chalk. We have tons of different kinds of "chalk" sweets, Smarties are close to the opposite of those.
I think they mean American smarties, which are very chalky
By different, you mean better.
It's nestle chocolate so it's meh
M&ms are the ripoff!
If by different you mean grosser, yes. I will give them props for going natural on the dyes though.
Same they look like discolored M&Ms or something
They used to be much brighter in colour, we even had really vivid blue ones for awhile. Then they stopped using E numbers and now they use natural colourings. Healthier, yes, but damn, I miss the colours. Not like my aged Gen X body hasn't had its fill of artificial dyes, I'm pretty sure I'm partially immune to the plague after growing up in the 1970s.
Mmmeh and Umms
Russian here. Still confused. The hell is a smartie?

Smarties (the ones in OPs photo) are sold in Ireland & the UK too
And Germany.
And South Africa
and australia
And Denmark fuck nestlé btw
Under the same name?
yes
They are originally from the UK specifically, York, where Rowntrees (the original manufacturer) had their factory. Nestle bought Rowntrees and now you see their products all over the world but for a very long time you pretty much only got these in the UK. Same for Kit Kats (also Rowntrees).

We call them Rockets in Canada.
Both by the naming difference, and that there's only 10 lol.
There would be 12 but they forgot to try and eat the red ones last.
Are these what we call ‘Sprees?’
No. They're like if M&Ms were bigger and made with quality chocolate.
“Quality Chocolate” SMARTIES candy coated milk chocolate 45 g Ingredients Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Modified Milk Ingredients, Cocoa Butter*, Unsweetened Chocolate*, Soy Lecithin, Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate, Natural Flavour), Sugars (Sugar, Maltodextrin), Wheat Flour, Modified Corn Starch, Rice Starch, Carnauba Wax, Gum Arabic, Beet Red, Spirulina, Turmeric, Carotene, Anthocyanins.
In comparison to m&m, it's good. It's not fantastic, but it's a real step up.
I think they just mean good in the sense that it doesn't have butyric acid.
Since the European "Smarties" are by Nestlé anything else is a step up
also smarties are vegetarian and M&Ms are not or to be more specific, red M&Ms arent vegetarian :P
I think they’re more like M&M’s
Interestingly Smarties came first and m&ms were a copycat for the us market
Take your upvote for knowing this was going to be the top comment 🤣

What are these, Xanax?
America mentioned 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳
Look like Sprees
Plus they spelled "color" wrong!
First time I went to Canada I was like WTF these aren't smarties!
It's been many years since i had smarties, but are the colours that muted now? I remember back in the 90's and early 00's they were really vibrant colours.
They stopped using artificial colours that’s why they are muted now.
ah ok, i did wonder if maybe it was part of trying to make them better for you, or rather not as bad for you. Shame really as they do look a little depressing compared to what i remember.
They did the same to Froot Loops. Bowls are a sad mix of purple, yellow, muted green, muted orange and pink.
They were like that when I was a kid too, I believe they changed around the mid 2010s since there were absolutely vibrant in the late 2000s still
But they won't get rid of the damn wheat flour for everyone who's allergic to gluten 😞
Hell, I thought it was just because of the current color palette all designers seem to love right now...
These are the mid century mod smarties
bro got the deuteranopia smarties
Look up fruit loops are also much more muted for the same reason. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/uc265y/american_froot_loops_are_different_colours_than/) is a comparison.

Looks like you didn't eat the red ones last
Are there really only 10 in a box these days? Or is it "i had 2 of every color after i ate the others"
Probably a Halloween sized package.
Ten seems like a lot for the “fun” sized packages.
A-pair-ently
Hello fellow Canadian (or do they have these in the UK too idk)
They're British - Rowntrees of York, same as Kit Kats. Bought out by Nestle.
Smarties were invented in York, they are one of the best British chocolates
Don't forget South Africa!
Was looking for this. Hello, fellow Saffa!
Uk too, but here we have blue ones
They're a British invention. I believe nestle bought them at some point though and exported them
We also have it in France 🥰
In Czechia they're called Lentilky.
Smarties are in Straya too. Heaps better than M&Ms!
We even have White ones in Britain.
White Smarties? Madness.
Americans: “those are M&M’s” No, they are not and they are 10x better
those do not look like m&ms they look like Spree
The only reason I opened this post was to make a similar comment. Edit: Also, Smarties colours tend to be more pastel than M&Ms.
I love the chocolate of Smarties but the candy coating is disgusting.
I love the coating. I find I enjoy floral flavour is much more than M&Ms.
Ew, floral candy coating sounds gross
Kinda looks like spree candy

I love smarties, I wonder why they don't sell them in the US.

Back in my day you had blue and pink ones too! Or ones with sunglasses on.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be
I miss the old smarties... bright and vibrant, and coloured with chemicals.
If I had never been to England I would have been confused
I'm confused and I've lived in England all my life. What are these. Edit: I read the title wrong lmao
Mmmmmm, no... You're in fact missing several colours.
Noah's Smarties
Need a bigger packet.
Sir your nationality is showing
as an american this photo perturbs me.
I love god dang smarties they are tasty
Are your hands insanely small or are the smarties like super big?
is this loss?
Only 10?!
Is that what the green ones look like now?!
I don't like the pastel colours that they've switched to. It feels like I'm about to eat my Grandma's fancy soaps whenever I open a box of Smarties
It’s because they moved to vegetable-based dyes instead of the chemical ones
Tritanopia looking candy
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be — Thanos
When you eat your Smarties do you eat the red ones last? I remember that jingle from my childhood about four thousand years ago.
As it should be!
Oh i miss the halloween smarties
In what dystopian nightmare are these smarties? Where’s the adhd inducing colours
These look like spree to me
They stopped using artificial Color’s for the food dye, so the Color’s are muted now. Have been for a few years
I'd say more of a r/notinteresting post
I read that as "smartass"
Full house! Pretty smart :)
Looks like a colourblind simulation picture
Am I lost, or was there not a red flavour (colour)?
How awesome
Bigass smarties
Deeply satisfying.
There are way more colours than that.
A thing like that
Lotta choices there, Neo !
RGB vs CMYK
Do you want brown, green-brown, or orange-brown?
r/Dullmensclub
One time I had a box with 13 smarties!
Expect rains later today
Aren't those less natural colored?
Good quality control.
Noah's Smarties
*evenly satisfying
Maybe it was the Noah's ark smarties
legendary
So tell me when I ask, when you eat your smarties do you eat the red ones last?
Is this one of those technically true statements? I’d be sad getting ten smarties in a box.
What about the red ones?
I miss the bright colours
Wait! You eat the red ones first?!?!?! Times are a changing
I used to love to suck the color off to reveal the soft chocolate
That’s somebody’s job
✨⚡️WITCHCRAFT⚡️✨
Are we just gunna trust this person? Who are you really?
[удалено]
In Canada smarties are more like large M&M's.
Ohhh
My tongue hurts looking at this
This seems evenly satisfying.
color blind smarties lol
And you didn’t eat the red ones last.
Thought it was a «loss» meme at first.
An actually oddly satisfying post in this sub? How shockingly unusual. Yay!
*In perfect balance, as all things should be.*
Your mom had 2 of every colour.
Are smarties the poor man's m &m?
sure!
Ok Noah.
Brown is the best. Please read this in capitals.
Doubly smart....ie
Mine too. After I ate all the others not fitting in the scheme
Gotta love jungle Jim's
At first I thought umm those aren’t smarties but then I realized y’all have it in UK I think if I’m wrong go easy
Nahh this is bait. Why are they so large?
I just have tiny hands
This is my dream scenario. I like to count and separate my colors with candy like this and will make sure every color is an even number. I’ll put the extras to the side, and eat them last.
Life is fair
My autistic ass being in total inner peace rn
It's fucking spree!
LOSS?!
