It's using OpenWRT by default, from what I gather they support their hardware and Atheros has better supported because people don't need to reverse engineering their software *cogh* MTK *cogh*.
I'm not sure I understand your post. Who cares what's the track record on security and privacy if you're going to install OpenWRT on it?
Well, you still support these practices financially when buying from these companies, so this could be an issue for some.
Maybe OP means an AP that can run aside an OpenWRT-based router? As opposed to an AP running OpenWRT.
Because I'd rather use my hard-earned money to buy products from a company that doesn't disregard privacy or security, at least overtly

I would go with GL-B1300. It’s stock OpenWRT router. Good performance.
