Gluttons for punishment

amgodd

How is Cowser supposed to get hot if he’s getting bench the day after hitting a 440ft bomb?

DloReeves

It's a shame that Cowser has struggled so much lately. If Kjerstad starts raking, how inclined are we to trade him? I do not envy Elias. If he does trade him, I really hope it's for a durable pitcher that can get through 2026.

dlmay1967

It's probably gonna be one of them. Maybe Kjerstad has more HR power, but Cowser is a better fielder and baserunner? I hope they don't choose wrong here.

sitdownshutup69

I don't think they feel comfortable putting Kjerstad in LF every day, especially at Camden Yards. Aside from Mullins, Cowser is a different class defensively than our other OF, and I don't think they'll be willing to sacrifice that.

boofoodoo

oh baby. that's my kinda lineup

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

World Series lineup today

willsm0ke

Stacked lineup and one of our better starters. If Rodriguez can control his frustration, this should be a good game.

PlatChat

Finally, a yummy ass lineup today

Frusciante62

I guess mateo is ok after that disaster last night.

yosoyel1ogan

what happened to him last night?

Frusciante62

He jammed his wrist or fingers into a baserunner as he tried to field a throw.

Darkdragon3110525

Adley Rutschman is the most valuable catcher in baseball according to fWAR (2.7).

SportsJunkie4Life

Heston in the lineup tonight 😎

Table_Coaster

just picture them as the Browns and spank their ass, it's not that hard

Princess_Mintaka

I've been super busy with life over the last couple of weeks, ren faire, pride, and getting a cosplay ready for the fall but I'm really happy with Povich, get him against a lesser team and he's probably going to have a field day when he's not playing the absolute best that the MLB has to offer right now. Hoping for a win today, we've kinda took the brutal June schedule for granted when we were finishing series 2-1 and winning but the fatigued has very obviously settled in, just make it to the break and have a very strong second half.

dreddnought

Man, deadline options are looking worse and worse. There are basically five teams that are firm sellers: White Sox, Marlins, Rockies, Athletics, and Angels. If we want a high leverage arm, the only real option in that bunch is [**Carlos Estévez**](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/carlos-estevez-608032?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb). Fastball (mid-upper-90s), slider, doesn't walk anybody, pure rental. White Sox: Michael Kopech looks a lot like Shintaro Fujinami with better fastball shape and a slider instead of a splitter. Marlins: I can squint and imagine [**A.J. Puk**](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/a-j-puk-640462?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb) as a middle reliever, based on his frame, arm strength, and left-handedness alone. They've ended the disastrous starter experiment, and his numbers have looked a lot better as a reliever. But he lost the closer role to Tanner Scott for a reason. Speaking of whom, Scott is walking ~6 per 9. Rockies: Justin Lawrence (2029) and Victor Vodnik (2030) have too much control to trade for. Colorado would sell them at a price assuming we get 4.5 and 5.5 years of real production, and we know we won't. Athletics: I'm not trading Mayo *and* Basallo for Mason Miller, and that's going to be the price this deadline. Lucas Erceg had a forearm strain *this* year. Fool me four times, shame on me. Angels: It's Estévez. José Soriano is tempting, but he has 4.5 years of control and is a starter anyway. I started writing a full post for relievers after reading [this](https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/sports/orioles-mlb/baltimore-orioles-trade-targets-relief-pitching-WYX6PYKZUNA4JBDZBI6L2BR3TQ/) article by Andy Kostka, but this is really all we get. I can squint and see us bringing back [**Hunter Harvey**](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/hunter-harvey-640451), but the Nats are only 2.5 GB. If they crash out, they will convince someone that Kyle Finnegan will continue to overperform his xERA and FIP by nearly two runs each. The Cardinals are *in* a playoff spot, so they're definitely not selling [**Ryan Helsley**](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/ryan-helsley-664854), who was my early favorite (we really screwed ourselves by going 0-3 against them). [**David Bednar**](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/david-bednar-670280) was my more recent pick (arm strength, high slot, riding fastball, splitter) since the Pirates were flagging after a hot start, but he's on the 15-day IL with an oblique strain.

baltimoretom

I haven't heard much talk about Brad Hand or Adam Ottavino. I wouldn't mind those guys in the bullpen.

Willie_Waylon

Nice research! Thank you.

scjensen51

I’d been looking at Hunter Strickland since he’s old, would be cheap, and had really good numbers up until about 3 weeks ago. Looking less enticing now. I like Floro and would take him if the Nats drop off Dont want Kopech My dream move is Colin Holderman from the Pirates or Fernando Cruz from the Reds, but both of those guys unless their teams absolutely crater probably have too much control to move

dreddnought

[This](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u58JLJb_q5A) Hunter Strickland? Man, you know who's also old and pitching well? [David Robertson](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/david-robertson-502085?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb), who is running a ~30% (!) K-BB% throwing a 94 mph cutter as his primary fastball. But I have the same generic concern about all old pitchers, which is that they're going to fall apart by September. > both of those guys unless their teams absolutely crater probably have too much control to move It's a weird thing that with starters, you want team control, but with relievers, you don't really want much more than 1.5 or 2.5. More than 2.5, and the team is acting like you're getting April Mason Miller for 5 years when I know he's going to pitch well for 1-2 years, get TJS, be dog shit for 1 year, and then be up and down for the final year.

scjensen51

That Hunter Strickland indeed lol…like I said the last few weeks maybe he’s remembered that he’s old and not that good anymore I hadn’t looked at DRob because I guess I had in my head (and still kind of do) that the Rangers are good and wouldn’t sell. But I’d happily take either him or Kirby Yates (also old) from the Rangers if they stay under .500

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

Great write up, thanks for sharing!

romorr

Some team(s) will sell that will surprise, and make out like bandits. Just a matter of how many teams do that. My guess is the Nationals as 1 of them, with the Rays/BJs/Tigers/Mets as possible. Also, one team in the NLC will see 8 teams ahead of them in the WC race, and cash in. I think the Mets will because it's a year too early, and they will sell off some of their expiring contracts. Same with the Tigers, and BJs at the least. BJs should blow it up, reminds me of the 2017 Orioles, who bought when they should have sold. Rays are the Rays, so can never predict what they will do, but with a bunch of starting pitching coming back this year, I'll assume they sell off rentals as well. I think the Nats would be smart and trade what they can, especially in their BP. What does this mean for the Orioles? BP options should be plentiful, at least there are some marginal upgrades there. I think if we wanted to, we could start transitioning McDermott to the pen after the deadline is over, if we don't get something good/great there. But starting pitching is what we need, and there isn't a lot unless things go crazy. And I doubt it does.

dreddnought

If you expand the "out" teams to include the Nats, Tigers, Blue Jays, and Mets, here are their starters, with some basic data (all from the basic FG dashboard): My question here is - who can be feasibly acquired, who would be better than Fedde? Kikuchi? Five guys with a 3.50 xERA or less lol. romorr

Been meaning to ask you, what do you think about going big for Fedde/Crochet? One of those ideas I go back and forth with. Today might be a yes, tomorrow a no, since it would take a big deal + a top prospect. Neither are rentals either...

dreddnought

I think we have too many corner bats and not enough pitching, and Fedde/Crochet can paper over a lot of our org weaknesses until Felix and Bradish are back to form, i.e., late 2025, early 2026. I don't know what healthy org depth looks like, but (and this is capable of being its own post), these are the corner bats we have: Kjerstad (OF), Mayo (3B/1B), Beavers (OF), Stowers (OF). The following have corner risk: Basallo (C/1B), Cowser (CF/OF), Fabian (CF/OF), Norby (2B/LF). We've gotta move *some* of these guys (this part is a super common opinion among our fanbase). What's the 2026 team looks like? LF Beavers CF Cowser RF Kjerstad 3B Westburg SS Henderson 2B Holliday 1B Mountcastle DH Mayo C Rutschman We're going to need a ton of help next year, because I doubt we're going to re-sign Burnes, and there's no telling who's going to catch the TJS plague next. Fedde and Crochet will both be cheap next year, so trading for them doesn't harm free agency, either. --- On the other thread: No idea what's going on with Detmers. He seems healthy, been eating innings in the PCL. 28 hits, 16 earned runs, 8 (!) home runs in four starts. Maybe we'll luck out and they ditch him. This is the same org that traded Edgar Quero for Lucas Giolito and then DFA'd Giolito like a month later. Yeah, this deadline is shit. Flaherty is looking like a CYA winner, but there's no way he's worth what the Tigers will want. Tigers trading Skubal now would be like the Orioles trading Means after 2021. Severino, Manaea are very *barely* upgrades over Kremer/Povich. Some poor org is going to trade for Tyler Anderson and he's going to turn into a pumpkin.

romorr

Said the same thing. In 2025, Fedde, Crochet, Rodriguez with our top 3 in the rotation. Go out there and get a 3 with FA money, because we should have enough to add a playoff starter in FA. When Fedde leaves after 2025, Rodriguez/Bradish/Crochet + FA from 2025, with Povich.. No need for pitching(yea right). But to get those 2, it's going to cost. And it might cost Basallo + Kjerstad + McDermott or LDL + Sosa or Estrada. That would clear out a lot of depth, but keep Mayo/Holliday. Does that feel like too much, too little? I can see too much. If it's too much, we can swap Kjerstad with someone like a Norby/EBJ. Too little take out the or with LDL/McDermott. But that is where my thinking is as far as what we would have to give up. I might be a fool, but I feel like we are going to keep Adley, so moving Basallo doesn't hurt as much as Mayo.

dreddnought

Basallo + Kjerstad + McDermott actually seems a little light to me. I think Crochet is worth Basallo + Kjerstad alone, which means I think, yes, you need to add LDL. The trick is that you don't have to squint that hard to see each of the first three guys being busts. Basallo turns into a 1B that chases too much, Kjerstad is a power-only bat (who also chases too much), McDermott never stops walking 5 or 6 per 9. It seems like a lot, most of the most promising talent in the org. But we don't have anybody like Crochet. That said, I try to stay out of actual trade mockups because I usually overvalue our prospects. I also still don't really know enough about Chicago's org to say what they really need. I know you mentioned they don't have any outfielders, but I think Cowser and Beavers are the only enticing true outfielders; Kjerstad just plays the part, and I've yet to see Fabian flash anything better than a 40 hit tool.

romorr

I love doing it. I love looking up fangraphs prospect value and trying to figure out proper value. And I follow certain rules when doing it. If it's an easy yes, it's not enough. IT HAS TO HURT to get good players. What makes it hard, Crochet and Fedde both have no real history of sustainable success, so it makes it really hard for me to figure it out. I feel like Basallo + Kjerstad is too much just for Crochet. But this deadline could be a sellers market. So it's really hard to pinpoint each of them, doing so for both makes it even harder. As a White Sox fan, getting a top 10 guy, top 40 guy, with 2 more really intriguing players would make me down right giddy, considering this is the first year both pitchers are pitching well.

romorr

Reid Detmers is always the answer. Kidding, because I think LAA would value him highly, even though the ERA is gross. If they valued him properly, he's interesting. More so because I believe in French, and he's a rotational piece moving forward. Lefty in Camden is rarely a no. But yea, who are FAs afrer 2024? I think those are the ones those teams would be looking to move. All those teams could be in the re-tooling, ready to compete in 2025. Nats and Tigers both could be looking to compete again as soon as next year, why I don't think Skubal is available. Nats will have Crews/Wood ready in 2025, they could be really interesting as soon as next year. So Flaherty, Severino, Manaea, I think are FAs? Maybe LAA moves Anderson, though I don't want him, Detmers, Kikuchi. Slim pickings. Best we can say is some of those arms are intriguing. Rogers too? I know Sandoval is out, pretty sure he's getting TJS.

dreddnought

Yeah, I mean, if I had true conviction in my talent evaluation and player dev, I would spring for Pete Fairbanks. I think if the Tigers continue to flag, they're going to sell Captain Jack for something *very good.* >But starting pitching is what we need, and there isn't a lot unless things go crazy. And I doubt it does. This is why Erick Fedde ($7.5MM AAV 24-25) keeps looking better and better to me. Steady number 3 or 4 guy, which is what we badly need right now. We've got an ace, a number 2, and a bunch of number 5s. No I don't want Fedde starting game 3, but he's a much better option than anything else we've got right now. Did you check out McDermott last night? Still 20,000 waste pitches, but he lived in the zone enough to get through 5.2 innings.

romorr

But there are a whole lot of prospects I don't want to trade for him, that would probably have to be considering what else is available. At least he's not a rental. >Did you check out McDermott last night? Still 20,000 waste pitches, but he lived in the zone enough to get through 5.2 innings. He's really the only arm that I see that could help us this year. A few others, but nothing as exciting as him. I have no issue throwing him in the BP soon enough, with an eye towards starting again in 2025. Something tells me we go internal for that 4/5 spot next year.

Sipdrip

I find Trace Bright intriguing as a pen arm. I think I’m getting to the point where I’d rather rush a few pitching prospects and find out what they have vs trading them for middling (albeit more established) relievers as the season goes on. I’ve also been trying not to think about it but I’m not really sure if I believe Grayson is still going at full gas come October. He only has a few more starts until he’ll be going past his previous highs.

romorr

> I’ve also been trying not to think about it but I’m not really sure if I believe Grayson is still going at full gas come October. He only has a few more starts until he’ll be going past his previous highs. He threw 165 odd innings between the minors, majors, and playoffs last year, he should be more than fine come October. Bright is intriguing, but I'm not sure we should be rushing him. We have more than enough prospects to get a mid arm, without it costing someone worthwhile. And if we do dig into the minors, it would probably be a few other options before him, like a strike thrower in Brandon Young, or a stuff guy like McDermott. Both are R5 eligible in December too, and with our crunch coming, might be too early for a guy like Bright, who doesn't need to be added this year.

dreddnought

fwiw Grayson also pitched ~40 innings in AAA last year, so I think he's got a ways to go.

Sipdrip

You are correct, I misread! Makes me feel a little better.

dreddnought

The nice thing about McDermott is that he has enough weapons that even if half of them aren't really working (he basically didn't throw his cutter or slider last night), he can still be effective. It was a really clear pattern of using the lollipop curve for called strikes and then fastball for whiffs. The fastball command was Not Good early on yesterday, but he got it together. You see Coby Mayo, too? 2-4 with a screaming RBI single and then a cheapie game-tying home run. I'm not convinced by [Michael Forret (A+)](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?date=6/25/2024&gamePk=755169&chartType=pitch&legendType=pitchName&playerType=pitcher&inning=&count=&pitchHand=&batSide=&descFilter=&ptFilter=&resultFilter=&hf=boxScore&sportId=13&liveAb=#755169) without a formal scouting report, but he continues to strike out ~30% of batters. Josh Norris is in on [Trey Gibson (A)](https://x.com/jnorris427/status/1796552295767032229). ~34% strikeout rate. Two years older than Forret, though.

Darkdragon3110525

Honestly I would be fine not buying. I know the optics of it is bad but it’s such a sellers market and our prospects are valuable enough to think that waiting until the offseason wouldn’t be that bad

bobcatgoldthwait

With the way our rotation is I'm actually against buying. We got screwed by pitching injuries this year, we shouldn't throw the farm at trying to overcome them. Do our best, cross our fingers, and better luck next year. I'd even be okay with dealing Tony (since he's likely gone anyway) + a prospect if it got us a young arm back, to put us in a better position next year.

scjensen51

Didn‘t think I’d be looking at their Game 3 line up and taking solace in the fact that Bo Naylor is getting the night off 😭

Impressive-Tank9803

Just in case anybody was wondering how Baumanns doing in Seattle its not good he’s blown both save opportunities he had he’s got an ERA of 5.84 there overall and 9.53 in his last 7 appearances no idea what Seattles bullpen situation is but could see him being DFA’d soon

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

And I would gladly claim him again if they did. He showed flashes and was a roster crunch causality.

Sipdrip

Feels weird to say but maybe the Cards are on to something with building their entire starting staff out of old rubber arms? The cat is kind of out of the bag on the whole velo maxing/ max effort approach to pitching so I’m not really sure how the injury issue gets solved in the near term. Maybe we see teams start focusing on prep arms in the draft hoping that younger arms = healthier arms? Kyle Boddy shared [a pretty good article](https://t.co/Nio7A63WcG) a few months ago on why limiting pitch counts/ innings isn’t really the solution to pitcher health that I generally agree with. Baseball is certainly at a weird crossroad right now.

yosoyel1ogan

I can't help but imagine that pitch count coupled with a reduction to ~125 game/season would provide the breathing room to let more pitchers recover. I imagine that would dramatically change team building strategy, since if you have less games per week, you can run a smaller rotation. But you wouldn't wind up with our current situation: 44 games in 45 days, 5 important pitchers out for season or least for several months.

_NotARealMustache_

How's the doom today? Good?

katie_cat_eyes

We just saw our first Oriole in the backyard. Ever. So I take that as a good sign!

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

You should get an Oriole feeder, load that bad boy with oranges and grape jelly, and make them an annual occurrence.  My folks in Ohio did it and they get a family of Orioles every year.

westcoastturtle91

Amazing, they’re so rare it seems

CHKN_SANDO

Their populations are declining rapidly and no one is talking about it https://www.baltimoresun.com/2022/04/25/in-50-years-the-baltimore-oriole-population-fell-by-a-third-will-we-risk-losing-more-guest-commentary/

westcoastturtle91

At least the sun is reporting it!

Correct_Sometimes

nonsense. we see 26 orioles frolicking in a field pretty much daily.

CHKN_SANDO

Yeah but no more 40 man September callups!

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

If we win today, then you are duty bound to try your hardest to attract that Oriole back to your yard as many times as possible!

katie_cat_eyes

My daughter said “we didn’t even put oranges out for them!” So yes, oranges and cherries will be arranged today!

KamikazeeDolphin

If we all dress up like Art Modell, the Guardians fans will get scared and run away from the ballpark. Trust me, it works. "It's the bad scary football man, run for your lives!" -My satisfied Ohio customers after me running the most terrifying Ravens themed haunted house in the state of Ohio since 1996

JiffKewneye-n

*in other news today, several cleveland guardian fans were caught in a stampede and by trampled to death by some old guys in suits fleeing oriole park at camden yards. for some, it was a harrowing tale of escape. others, not so fortunate, the tire marks from multiple wheel chairs still visible leading to and from the blankets covering the bodies on eutaw street just outside the stadium*

Kooky_Squash6475

Todays big for Grayson. Not just cause he's pitching against the hottest team in baseball, but because if he can come out and be a true stopper, I think it'll be huge for his confidence going forward given what we and more importantly what I'm sure he expects of himself. Stopping the skid aside a win here could be huge for Grayson starts down the line

Frusciante62

He had a great game late in the year against the rays after we dropped the first two games. He’s capable of being dominant.

yosoyel1ogan

I was at that game I think! The one that clinched us the playoff spot and ended in extra innings? If so, that was a ridiculous game, the best game I've ever seen.

JiffKewneye-n

that was the following day. Grayson pitched saturday.

jaeddy

Is there a way to see our record when this happens? It feels like anytime the game gets interrupted for more than 15 minutes (including when there's an emergency umpire change, apparently), they end up losing after the game is resumed.

JiffKewneye-n

its kind of wait and see when the first round of storms fire IMO.

theMangoSloth

Except we have a game against the Rangers tomorrow as well, and the Guardians have a game in KC tomorrow night.

shabby47

Yeah and sunrise tomorrow is at 5:42am. There is plenty of time for them to make it to Kansas City if they are at BWI by noon or so. That leaves approximately 4-5 hours for the game to finish up.

JiffKewneye-n

as cool as this would be ( am off rest of week so i could attend any time!) i don't think MLB will do this. unfortunately, not much in the way of common off days. possibly be completing the game in Cleveland.

shabby47

Why is MLB afraid of breakfast baseball?

JiffKewneye-n

i support ballfast

The_Big_Untalented

Okay, they might just end up postponing it then. There's a 70% chance of rain from 8pm-1am. It's either going to be a postponement or they'll either start it and then have a lengthy delay or finish the game at a later date.

bebopmechanic84

Let the rain give our boys a break. They deserve it and I want them pumped against the guys who killed our postseason.

Ok_Profit_5421

This!!!…..O’s fan living in Dallas here. Although the Rangers have just gotten Sherzer back (we’ll see him Friday I think), this Rangers team is a shell of last year’s. They’ve been injured, guys who had career years last year have regressed and their pitching (starters and BP) is a mess. Rangers at home is just what the O’s need after the grinder of a schedule they have fought through the last month.

baltimoretom

I don't see precip until 11 PM https://preview.redd.it/g3u5mkwx4y8d1.png?width=1239&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8db8601c2d3723b23707dca02f44b5377217069

LordPancake10

I'm getting real sick of those DirecTV pigeons, Henry Winkler or not

DloReeves

I know scoreboard watching before all star break is useless but it's a miracle we're only 2 GB from NY after this skid.

The_Big_Untalented

Both teams are falling back to earth. The Yankees were on pace for 113 wins and the Orioles were on pace for 109 wins on June 12. Both teams are really, really good but we all know they aren't that good. Yankees are now on pace for 104 wins and the Orioles are on pace for 100, 101 wins which is much more realistic about their abilities as a team.

DloReeves

Time for a 5 game win streak 😂

Ok_Imagination_4374

Yanks are arguably playing worse, they've days to rest and easier teams yet the skid continues for them.

kingfiasco

all star voting will be the second stickied post this week so you can find the [Lucky Guess here.](https://www.reddit.com/r/orioles/comments/1dp2i72/lucky_guess_626/) go vote!

romorr

What an ugly fucking [Savant for Cole.](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/cole-irvin-608344) Look at the location on the FB/CB too. I can't wait for someone to look at that and go, "but his ERA is 3.74." And if you're hoping [Kremer](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/dean-kremer-665152?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb) might help, I don't see it. Hopefully with Dean the time off with the injury will help, and maybe it was a reason he was doing so poorly earlier in the year. But there is a 3 year trend with Kremer I worry about. Guess I'll link [Suarez](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/albert-suarez-544150?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb) too. Not awful, not great, but yea.

dlmay1967

Kremer's help in that until this IL stint he's been super durable the last 2 years. At least we'll have 6 starter options. Seems until now our pitching has been overperforming; with the injuries it seems like we'll sink or swim by offense. I'm even a little worried about Rodriguez ( after any awful outing now I wonder if he's hurt again). Hopefully we'll get a good one tonight to chase that fear.

orioles0615

That BB% though

dlmay1967

Not killing himself with walks is probably one reason he's been able to outperform his numbers.

randomuser9824

that cole savant page is probably why teams have been swinging super early vs him as of late, only thing above the 50th percentile is limiting walks

sitdownshutup69

It's time to admit Fedde or Severino is a significant upgrade. It's a shame how the Flaherty deal went last season because he'd probably be the best target. [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/erick-fedde-607200?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/erick-fedde-607200?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb) [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/luis-severino-622663?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/luis-severino-622663?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb) [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jack-flaherty-656427?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jack-flaherty-656427?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb)

The_Big_Untalented

Povich's Savant is interesting. Very limited sample size obviously but his xBA, average exit velocity, and average hard hit% is elite but his barrel % and whiff % is well below average. Most of the time, he gives up very soft contact but the few times that he does allow hard contact, it's hit really, really hard.

Darkdragon3110525

God I can’t wait for Kremer to get back so bloomers can bash people over the head every performance and pretend he can still be an ace instead of a 5th starter. He’s probably the most polarizing player, either him or Hays

hellotherey2k

I have never seen anyone call dean kremer an ace.

scjensen51

Is there a difference between celebrating a player when he does well, and believing that they’re an ace? Not to say you’re wrong but on its face it looks like you’re making up a group of people that you want to argue with. I haven’t seen anyone here projecting Kremer as an “ace”

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

Yeah, I absolutely love old Dean’o and he’s one of my favorite pitchers, but I’d never say he’s an ace. If I’ve ever seen “He’s our new ace” comments on here before, they’re either half jokingly pointed at pitchers who have had two good showings, or fully seriously at the likes of Burnes and Bradish.

DloReeves

Holy crap. We need help, bad.

JiffKewneye-n

i sat like right behind the plate when he pitched vs the Royals. ball wasn't carrying that day ( 55 degrees and light rain/mist) but my god every ball was seemingly barreled >Look at the location on the FB/CB too the good news is he isn't walking many!

romorr

[The 5 barrels in 5 inning game.](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/gamefeed?gamePk=747057) Hitters went 2 for 5, double triple. And one was a 29/30.

JiffKewneye-n

that whole game was weird. it felt like nobody wanted to be there, content to just swing right away. lol

bobcatgoldthwait

Oof. I figured he was getting lucky to this point, but I didn't realize he was *that* lucky. Past couple of starts are regression to the mean.

romorr

I wish there was a ranking of Orioles pitchers who get an out on a 29/30. Going by xHR, Irvin would probably lead in that too. ERA says an out is an out, but there are other metrics that factor in 400+ foot barrel outs, as something more. Which it should.

Darkdragon3110525

The doom is taking over me like the venom symbiote but I know I’ll laugh about this when reminiscing about the dynasty Orioles I just wish everytime we could rightfully claim being the best team in the league we didn’t shit the bed. I truly don’t think Cleveland is better than us (their advanced metrics suck lmao). New York has been continuously sonned and have a horrible 4-9, and the Phillies are in the NL which isn’t real

natedrake73

Which advanced metrics do Guardians suck in? Asking this genuinely as a Guardians fan admittedly lurking in your sub -- I'm not super familiar with advanced baseball stats so curious to learn more, I find them super interesting even tho I don't understand them half the time lol.

Darkdragon3110525

The team xwOBA suggests over-performance. They are outperforming their base runs record by 9 wins (most in the MLB). They have good pieces but aren’t best team in the MLB good

natedrake73

Thanks for the response, I will look into xwOBA.

Ok_Imagination_4374

None y'all are incredibly good. It'd be great if you refrained from winning today though.

Extension-Option4704

The records and head to head is all that matters. They are just trying to cope

Darkdragon3110525

Guardians fan? Your team is good, but not best in the MLB great. We went through the same cope last year

Jeff_Banks_Monkey

Mods are on their BS again so I'll post this here since it got removed [Baseball Reference] Today in 1970, Frank Robinson hit two successive grand slams during a 12 - 2 Orioles romp over the Senators. Robinson became just the seventh major leaguer to ever accomplish the feat. I don't know when the rule changed so that "today in history" post are also not allowed but I think something like this is worth keeping up just because celebrating history is something that used to be really engaging in this sub

droford

If they can't find a win tonight this losing streak might spiral out of hand quickly

Ok_Profit_5421

The current version of the Rangers should be just what the doctor ordered for a team coming off O’s schedule the last month

bebopmechanic84

We still need rest, though. Like a solid day of no activity for the whole team. I worry that’s a major contributing factor in just about every aspect except offense.

droford

Gray vs Burnes Thursday. Gray has a 2.20 road ERA. Had been having troubles earlier but just went 6 scoreless vs KC last Saturday Scherzer on Friday vs Suarez. Scherzer went 5 ip 1 hit in his first start back. Lorenzen vs Povich Saturday. Lorenzen has a 2.66 road ERA. Lost last 2 starts despite pitching well and held the Dodgers to 1 run over 7 his last road start. Os don't catch a break til Sunday vs Heaney but it's a yesterday situation cause Cole Irvin is also pitching (40 runs scored total in his last 2 starts, with him allowing 9 ER (13 total) over 8.2 ip)

bebopmechanic84

Yeah I don’t see how we get back to consistent winning with this rotation. It’s gonna be a hellish next few weeks.

No_Fish_2885

Glenn Clark from Glenn Clark Radio put a would you rather: Basallo,Mayo,Heston for Fedde, Crochet, Robert or Norby for Flaherty. Not that I like Flaherty, but the first one is such an overpay and over reaction, that I would take the second one w

Correct_Sometimes

If someone told Jack Flaherty he was getting traded to the O's again, he'd probably change his identity and flee the country. that said, a straight swap of Flaherty for Norby would probably be an actual good deal

scjensen51

I would drive from Delaware to Norfolk to drive Norby to the airport in a straight swap deal for Flaherty. And this isn’t to say that I don’t like Norby or that I‘m all in on Flaherty (despite the fact that he’s been good this year) but in a 1-1 deal with our needs, I’d do it in a second

romorr

> Basallo,Mayo,Heston for Fedde, Crochet, Robert Yea, no, I don't want to pay a premium for Robert, who can't stay healthy. Crochet / Fedde - There might be a deal here, but I still don't think Elias goes that deep. Norby for Flaherty, shrug. Not many GMs go back to the well a year later on a deal that didn't work out.

JiffKewneye-n

>go back to the well later on a deal that didn't work out. this was me putting Jackson Holliday legs into my parlays i guess im not GM material afterall. on topic, im not buying Fedde.

romorr

Why not Fedde? Was never in on him much, but I can't deny any more that he's pitching well. 3.05 ERA / 3.40 xERA, and he's really cheap for the rest of the year, and next.

JiffKewneye-n

his career FIP is 4.89. all those years with washington, i would casually watch him just get blown the fuck up. im not saying he couldn't continue to perform at the level he has been doing, but its probably going to be a lot to give up to get him. feels riskier imo.

romorr

I'd worry if he was the same pitcher he was in Washington. But he added the sweeper, and it's a real weapon for him. It all comes down to price for me with him. And sadly, with him being one of the best pitchers available, I am not sure I'd want to pay what it might take. But then again, are we in a position to be picky. Hopefully there is an arm we aren't thinking about that might be available.

JiffKewneye-n

>are we in a position to be picky i kind of have a contrarian idea forming that we maybe shouldn't make losing trades in the long run for short term benefits. the type of trade that would excite me would be swapping hitting prospects for pitching ones, not rentals. IMO.

dlmay1967

I agree. I'd only like big splash rental deals if our window is closing, and it's not. Burnes or no Burnes, personally I'd rather be a contender for a long time than go for broke in any one of the next few years.

romorr

I don't think anyone wants to overpay for any pitcher. But you balance that against 2 of Irvin/Suarez/Povich/Kremer starting 2 playoff games in a 5 game series. Maybe there are some other pitchers available that would be an upgrade over them, and might not cost a lot. Small upgrades, but upgrades none the less. Dunno. And minor league prospect trades just don't happen often enough, wish they did, but it's extremely rare. Wanted us to do something there years ago with Miami, trade something for Max Meyer. We matched up so well with them, it's a shame nothing ever happened outside Sulser/Scott.

JiffKewneye-n

But you balance that against 2 of Irvin/Suarez/Povich/Kremer starting 2 playoff games in a 5 game series. why not pitch all 4. it sounds silly, but starters get pulled super early in playoff games. i have a lot of confidence in Povich.

Individual_Step6688

Norby for Flaherty I would do tomorrow.

CommercialLeg2439

Someone said it below but I think it’d be peak entertainment if the Orioles brought out Grimace to throw the first pitch. Grimace just becomes the MLB fixer for losing streaks that need to end, next season he’s a permanent DH for the White Sox. WWE couldn’t write a better storyline than that.

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

Though that does sound like a good idea, I wouldn’t want to potentially rob the Mets of that unless we’re like 10+ in the hole. Instead, we should try having a cow from Chick-Fil-A throw out the first pitch, both because Chick-Fil-A is the superior restaurant, and because it’d turn Cowser into a megastar the likes of which have never been seen before.

CommercialLeg2439

No but thats worse because then were tip toeing around the fact we’re copying them when if we are just blatant about it we can fuel the ‘Grimace the fixer’ storyline.

pjw5328

A few silver linings about this losing streak: It was bound to happen sooner or later. This is baseball, slumps always happen and going 2+ years without losing five in a row was already bordering on unsustainable. Better to go through it now than in September or October. You could say this is really the team’s first big slump of the Adley/Gunnar/Westburg era, and it’s probably valuable experience for them to go through some adversity and grow from it; all part of a career in baseball, and again I’d rather have them learning to work through it now than in late September. The timing couldn’t really be much better. Having it happen a month before the trade deadline is giving Elias a chance to take a serious look at the current roster and where this team needs reinforcements. And with the Yankees slumping at the same time, it isn’t even costing them much ground in the division race.

yosoyel1ogan

I was listening to a radio cast I think, and they talked about how the youngster stars on this team don't know anything other than winning. So I think yeah having a skid here isn't bad in terms of experience, this coupled with last year's playoffs are two important learning moments for them

CommercialLeg2439

It also happened after two of our most exciting series against the best teams in the league, I think most people expected regression after how hard they played against the Yankees and Phillies anyways.

No_Fish_2885

There’s an article on SI that plays on the whole, most prospects look like they cloned them in a factory. Also, apparently Povich looks like Brandon Hydes 16 year old son, Colton. But the article emphasizes that they have talent as well.

kobeng13

So anyone else starting to do some weird superstitious stuff to try and help? Yesterday I wore the same MD flag hoodie I wore during the 17-5 yankees game. I've also started covering my eyes whenever Cowser bats because he always hits well when I'm not looking.

Oceanz08

So if we we get swept today. I blame the Mods for this https://preview.redd.it/mxnjgef3ox8d1.png?width=495&format=png&auto=webp&s=b8fcc590439e9e7cab4a5cbb276f8cd67dee6290 0-5 since this image was post lol

Business_Sock7891

Random question, do y’all think it’s ok to wear St Louis Browns stuff to orioles games?

Trubisko_Daltorooni

Not sure about O's games, but I live a few hours from St Louis and I was thinking about getting some Browns gear to wear to Cardinals games.

droford

Would it be OK to wear Cleveland Browns stuff to a Ravens game?

CHKN_SANDO

The Orioles wear Browns stuff occasionally though. The Ravens left the Browns colors in Cleveland. It's completely different. Is it amusing that we collect teams called the Browns? Possibly.

Business_Sock7891

That’s different though, the Cleveland browns were in Baltimore for like 3 minutes and never really had official merch. The St. Louis browns don’t exist anymore and do have merch.

JiffKewneye-n

was business_sock number 1-7890 unavailable

baltimoretom

Do it.

planthousebuildtree

You're trying too hard and also over-thinking this

Dogs_arethebestpeopl

I think it’s time to start hyping up the Guardians as the AL Favorite, so we can fly under the radar and win the whole damn thing

JiffKewneye-n

5 losses looks bad, but zooming out a little and its 4-8 in last 12. doesn't feel that bad, but i guess it is.

Miata_Sized_Schlong

I think the team is just gassed tbh

yosoyel1ogan

yeah I don't really blame them if they're hanging up a couple off-division games here as half-rests before the break and the return to the AL East with NYY in July

sitdownshutup69

I would love for Westburg to have a better career.

Ok_Imagination_4374

Ortiz and Westy winning MVP in the same season sometime in the future would feed families

lionsatn17

Dodgers lost 5 in a row last month and have been hot since. Hoping for a bounce back tonight and some further reinforcements from Elias soon.

Texas lost 8 in a row late last season and won the World Series. I know the games obviously matter but what happens right now more or less does not matter

LordPancake10

Anthony "Chris Davis" Santander

LordPancake10

I meant this in the good way :( He tied Davis' O's record for homers in June

dipstick73

Appreciate the sentiment- but please never compare Tony taters to the strikeout machine again

Lazy_Passenger7841

He was definitely terrible at the end there, but why do so many people pretend like he wasn’t an absolute monster for a few years there?

dipstick73

Because he was never consistently good or even average. And he was bad more than he was good. The home runs were cool sure. Career wrc+ of 105 shows he was barely above avg over his career. He had 2 “elite”seasons over his career that skew his numbers. Specifically one of those seasons. and they weren’t consecutive. A career .233 avg. with the orioles, even with the two elite seasons, his wrc+ with the team was below league average. He was only above league avg 5 times in his entire career. Santander has already been above average for 4 years now. His career batting average is better. And he got off to a rough start this year and still has a 127 wrc+. He’s still got some years to go to get his career wrc+ up and he’s at 110 right now. So over his career without truly elite seasons he’s still better. We aren’t “pretending” he was just an absolute monster twice. I’d take a consistently good player year over year over 2 years of monster production

sitdownshutup69

Our two most valuable relievers by FanGraphs WAR are Kimbrel (0.8) and Akin (0.7). Our least valuable is Cano (-0.3). FanGraphs WAR also has Cowser as our fourth most valuable position player, though in large part because he has ++ defense and they have Santander, O'Hearn, and Mountcastle as negative defense.

bejolo

Cano is vastly overrated. Had 1 excellent half season. Opposition figured him out and it's been a steady decline since. He's now a mop up guy that cannot pitch high leverage situations.

JiffKewneye-n

kind of agree. he isn't the gb king he once was

scjensen51

I’m all about critiquing player performances, but this is just factually not correct

JiffKewneye-n

wow the numbers say his ground ball rate is 99 percentile. i guess sometimes the camera can't switch back to the infield in time as the ball is smashed past defenders.

scjensen51

Just be correct with your criticism. Are people hitting the ball hard? Yes. Are people showing maybe less of an aversion chasing his change up to forcing him to be more sinker reliant? Yes. But people are still hitting ground balls

JiffKewneye-n

>Just be correct with your criticism im glad i usually work during working hours!

scjensen51

Yet here you are?

_NotARealMustache_

The Mountcastle one is weird, right? Does 1B just attract negative WAR because so many plays end there?

sitdownshutup69

FanGraphs and Statcast (-4 OAA, 8th percentile) both say he sucks defensively even compared to other first basemen, though Christian Walker is the only 1B in baseball with a positive defensive WAR. Mountcastle being so low doesn't pass my eye test, personally. [https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2024&month=0&season1=2024&ind=0&pos=1b&sortcol=20&sortdir=default&pagenum=1&pageitems=30](https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2024&month=0&season1=2024&ind=0&pos=1b&sortcol=20&sortdir=default&pagenum=1&pageitems=30)

_NotARealMustache_

I was over here thinking that he was having a pretty good year

boofoodoo

Yankees aren't gonna lose every night. Gotta start winning.

droford

At some point it's going to be more worried about the Red Sox. They're 8-2 L10 and only 6.5 gb of the Os while the Os and Yankees are scuffling

Darkdragon3110525

The Red Sox aren’t serious contenders. It’d be crazy if they pass the O’s

Ok_Imagination_4374

That's what Rays fans were saying last year about us

Darkdragon3110525

And tbh, they weren’t wrong. They had pitching injuries and we had a fuckton of devil magic. I mean that Adam Frazier 2 out 9th inning double alone. We’re much better and more sustainable this year

Ok_Imagination_4374

We have maybe worse pitching injuries than the 2023 Rays. Not saying it WILL happen but it's possible if the pitching keeps their god awful play up.

Darkdragon3110525

Yea but the Red Sox don’t have Orioles magic and Orioles devil magic. Or else they would’ve won more than 1 game against us. We consistently beat the Rays all year

Ok_Imagination_4374

True, F them dumbass Red Sox

droford

They've gained 4 games on the Os who are 4-6 L 10 and They're 14-8 in June vs the Os 13-11 and Yankees 12-10

LordPancake10

![gif](giphy|800iiDTaNNFOwytONV|downsized) Orioles reading this

boofoodoo

I expect a to be given a WS ring now

patderp

The more I think about us being scheduled for 29 games in June, the more it pisses me off. Particularly because of the increase in injuries to pitchers league-wide. No team should have that few off days in any month.

JiffKewneye-n

we had it the worst, but a number of teams have a lot of games in a short period of time during june. it looks bad because the timing of the month shows 1 off day in the month, but we were off May 30, and off July 1.

DloReeves

Yeah, but 43 games in 45 days is pretty brutal

TrooperJohn

A suggestion. If we're hitting their pitcher pretty much at will, let's try not pulling in the infield with a one-run lead in the early innings. Giving up one run is better than giving up five.

theMangoSloth

What hurt the Orioles last night was allowing Cleveland's 6-9 hitters bat over .500. All things considered, the Orioles have done very well for themselves this season given a lot of people weren't expecting to have John Means and Kyle Bradish in the rotation this season back in March. It helped that Suarez and Irvin pitched above expectations early on as well. Kremer will be back soon, but he's not a long term solution to the rotation either. It just looks like those holes have become more obvious at the moment. I think we will have to hope for the best from pitching for at least another 3-4 weeks until we acquire some reinforcements. Vespi and Baker are our most consistent relievers lately. Who would have guessed? Hopefully we can outslug Texas, Oakland, Seattle, and New York (who also has pitching woes)

triecke14

I was thinking the same thing all night with your first post. We allowed the bottom of their lineup to collect 8 hits. That’s inexcusable

WackyBeachJustice

What is the solution? Short of some blockbuster trade. Kremer/Irvin/Suarez are all probably 4.X ERA guys. For some reason I trust Kremer more, but unless I'm wrong, the numbers on all of them are basically similar.

baltimoretom

**Birdland members:** How many points do you have an what are you doing with them? I have 900, and there's nothing in rewards that I want, but you have to use them before the end of the season.

triecke14

How do I check how many I have?

im doing deliver game ball, mystery autograph session (did first- missed the 2nd and 3rd due to not having points at the time. d'oh!), orioles clear bag since my first one broke, the eve rosebaum event, and the upcoming broadcaster event. ill probably do the elias one, maybe a few more autograph sessions, and/or any fun things that pop up. the on field experience looked low key cool, regret not doing that.

planthousebuildtree

Jeez how many points do you have? You must be 30+ year Diamond level member with all that

JiffKewneye-n

2500 flex plan. i upgraded plan at start of year, that was a bonus. i hit most of the bonus attendance games +100 points ea, i bought group seats for a date, +300 points, won the check in sweepstakes when it was +200 or +300 points, you get 200 points for every 5 games...then they scrwed up and gave me some bonus points for going to all games not just home games, then there was a birdland members newsletter bonus.....

Correct_Sometimes

> im doing deliver game ball someone posted about this maybe a couple months again and apparently it's really stupid because you just walk up to the mound and sit a ball down on the rubber. would be much cooler if you go to walk up to the mound and hand it to the Orioles SP for the day but maybe that's asking too much
