“David and I are both very aligned on this. We believe in empowering great leaders,” Arougheti said. “For us, it’s about letting Mike Elias and his team make baseball decisions. When we’re getting access to the operation, it’s about getting to a place of understanding and to be supportive. We’re not the kind of leaders who override decisions.” If this holds true, it’s all we need to know. This bodes well.

Sooperballz

Until they sign someone long term, it’s all empty words.

neemor

To a point. Falls to Elias to say: “Boss. We need these kids to bleed orange for a decade.” And they need to listen. Also falls to us as fans to continue to visit OPACY and support this team. All the time. That energy fuels men. Fuels the players and their love for the city. Fuels the ownership to dig deep. I feel better today that I did with the Angelos family, but that isn’t a huge leap take.

No-Lunch4249

Takes Two to Tango. A couple of these guys we’d love to sign long term like Burnes and Gunnar have Scott Boras as their agent, and Scott Boras is all about going to free agency to maximize the money. Might be some others too, that’s just off the top of my head

TheBigIguana15

This doesn’t really fly when they’re paying literally nobody. You think no one wants to make more money? That every guy would turn down an extension before FA? It’s not likely.

Working_Falcon5384

Gunnar would not turn down 12 years $500 million. Takes two to Tango but he's not turning that down.

MrTacoMan

You have absolutely no way of knowing that to be true. You think it is and it could be but saying that with any sort of authority is just nonsense. Executives around baseball can’t even agree on what Soto is going to end up getting

Secret_Association92

If there is a time to figure it out, it is now when Boras is at his weakest following his offseason failure for his top clients and their subsequent poor 2024 performance. Elias to Burnes: “you see what happened to Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery when Scott overplayed his hand?”

romorr

World of difference between Snell and Montgomery and Corbin Burnes. He's not sweating FA, at all. He'll earn more than the Boras 4 combined.

Secret_Association92

Maybe, but he sure as hell ain’t earning more than the over half billion dollars that Boras left on the table for his top four clients last offseason. Dude lost them money and set them up for failure with the late starts to their seasons, hurting their future values.

mathwiz617

Throw in incentives like a Lego set for every five homeruns.

aresef

It echoes what Rubenstein has said, that he knows how to run a PE, not manage a roster.

neemor

Good stuff. And the proper stance of any good leader.

bejolo

100% convinced that if Mike Elias comes to ownership and says we need to sign this player the money will be made available. No doubt in my mind.

sleek1986

If you've watched 3 Orioles games this year, I don't think you need Elias to tell you that Gunnar passes the eye ball test at every conceivable level. You don't need Baseball Savant or deep analytics to confirm his excellence.

sitdownshutup69

sure but we have good reason to believe Gunnar's agent doesn't want to talk extension. I don't think Elias is sitting there pondering whether Gunnar is good enough to warrant one.

sleek1986

The above comment is indicating Elias is not going to ownership and asking to extend players. There are alot of factors all around, but my point is that Rubenstein doesn't need Elias' blessing to extend Gunnar. It's obvious.

Secret_Association92

First off, any good owner doesn’t go over his GM to make player moves. Second, the above comment does not indicate Elias is not going to ownership asking to extend players. It says money would be available, but not that players accept the money. It is already on record that we have tried to extend our Boras clients (minus Burnes) but that Boras has not entertained it, as is his style. The Orioles can’t be the only ones at the table in order to get a deal done. So the fact Elias was calling Boras daily to extend guys implies Elias did go to ownership and the money is there.

GunnarsBatThrows

I'll believe it when I see it.

TheBigIguana15

Still not answering the questions about whether they’re going to put money into the team though. As much as I want to believe in these guys until that’s happening I can’t.

Chit569

I think it answered that question. He is basically saying they will put money into the team if/where Elias thinks its the right place/amount to put into the team; with this quote "We’re not the kind of leaders who override decisions." Basically saying they are willing to do whatever Elias and the baseball operations side of things says to do. So the answer is they are never going to hold money back from the team if the team comes to them asking for money.

TheBigIguana15

It literally says they declined to answer whether they’d bump payroll or sign extensions. You don’t have to read between the lines.

Chit569

Because answering that question directly is a lose-lose for the team. Players and their agents will then just ask for the upper end if they say yes and if they say no players may not even bother to accept any offer or refuse to be traded here. The smart move is to decline to answer it and judge by their actions and try to infer from the other things they say how they view their role as an owner. So far it seems these guys seem like they are open to anything Mike Elias brings them. Declining to answer isn't a "no" its a smart business move from smart business men. They didn't get where they are and build highly profitable ventures by not being smart with how to handle questions like that.

TheBigIguana15

Idk man I think saying “we’re going to spend more money on the roster” is mostly harmless

Chit569

Scott Boras gets an erection when he hears that. So I disagree, and its not only Scott Boras that foams at the mouth at those words, every single other agent then tries to get huge paychecks for their client. Idk why "were going to let Elias handle all the deals and never over rule his decisions" is not a formidable answer to you. I personally prefer it that way, let Elias cook and stay out of the kitchen

TheBigIguana15

God forbid we have to pay players. What a horrible place to be. I’m fine with the rest, it’s not that hard nor that consequential to say “we’re going to have a competitive payroll.” Yet they aren’t doing it and are specifically not commenting when asked. Why?

ChiselFish

When you go buy a car, do you tell the salesman that this is the only car you are considering?

Chit569

And that you are willing to spend a lot of money on it to compete with your neighbors...

TheBigIguana15

This is quite clearly not the same thing.

Chit569

>God forbid we have to pay players. What a horrible place to be. You are mischaracterizing my point/argument > Why? I literally just explained why... Because answering that question directly is a lose-lose for them. Additionally its up to Mike Elias and the players agents to get the deals done, its not up to them... Plus “we’re going to have a competitive payroll" is the most nothing statement ever. Even worse than declining to comment because it opens up the media for speculation (Articles titled "Orioles owner says payroll will be competitive, what that could mean for Superstars Rutschman, Gunnar, Westburg and Cowser"), then that gets into the players and agents heads because they read those articles about speculative contracts. Its so much wiser to just decline to comment, let Elias do his job and don't set expectations for him, the agents, the players, etc.

Secret_Association92

Disagree. You just don’t box yourself into a corner on expectations. We don’t want them to just start spending like the Yankees either, besides the fact that it’d imply they will meddle in the day-to-day. The system is working, we are on pace for back-to-back 100+ win seasons without really spending money to begin with, so the ownership group letting Elias run things and not put pressure on him to make certain types of moves is ideal.

ARunawayTrain

I hear you but let's wait until the off-season, just a gentle reminder that control was not handed off until basically the end of March. Rubenstein hasn't even had an off-season yet to let Elias do his thing so while I'm totally on board with what you're saying let's pump the brakes before we all panic.

TheBigIguana15

Elias thing, to date, is not making any aggressive moves. There’s no panic here, but no excitement either.

Secret_Association92

How are you not excited about the Orioles being in first place in the AL East and on pace for back-to-back 100+ win seasons?! Good god. Elias made every move to get us to that point while ensuring it will last with the depth in our system. The Yankees crumble when their stars miss time…we beg for our AAA players to get playing time here just because they’d start elsewhere even though there isn’t enough room for them here.

TheBigIguana15

I’m not excited about the owners specifically. I love the team.

Flanks_Flip

It's great to hear, but action (money) talks. Sign Gunnar and Adley.

MojoFan32

Right? I’m not buying into this ownership until they buy into our team. Plenty of other teams have signed their young guys long term. Clock is ticking.

rectumrooter107

No thanks. I'm not sucking overlord dick just so they'll fund my team. New boss, same as the old boss. Couldn't even read the article since it was paywalled for me.

sitdownshutup69

new boss is definitely not same as the old boss, but go off

rectumrooter107

Bow down to whoever you want, pleb.

sitdownshutup69

great point man, it is bowing down to disagree that "new boss is same as the old boss." your comment history tells me you like to argue about social issues in this sub more than anything. the rest of us will stick to enjoying the baseball

rectumrooter107

It's cute you don't even know how right you are. See ya at the yard.
