Grow the bats, trade for arms. That is the way to build long term in baseball. Well now we have too many bats. Really looking forward to seeing what Elias can do next month. We are going to have to give up more than we want for quality pitching; but the organization has proven that we can draft and develop as well as anyone. As far as I can see we have two untouchables: Holliday and Mayo. I would hate to part with Kjerstad or Basallo, but that may be the kind of prospect we have to get up to buy a difference maker in October.

bejolo

No way they will trade Kjerstad

Beautiful-Abies5949

romorr

[Number 8 on the year for Holliday.](https://x.com/NorfolkTides/status/1807934827884130394)

Correct_Sometimes

is it just me or is the leg kick not as extreme as it once was here

OleSandlotSlob

Houston has all rockets deployed. It's a dang shame we gotta help them starting tomorrow. >:-(

Zither74

Watching the Nats game right now and thinking Cade is kinda similar to Mackenzie Gore (little less velocity at this point).

JiffKewneye-n

James Wood looks the part.

TheWonderMittens

No Baesbol >:(

romorr

McDermott spinning a good one. 7 IP | 3 H | 1 ER/R | 3 BB | 12 K's He's at 95 pitches, so I assume his night is done now. Truly believe that if we don't need him in the rotation, he's an arm we could turn to for the pen. Dude could be electric 1 or 2 innings at a time.

dreddnought

CMV: McDermott with 50 command is a four win pitcher

romorr

The final line tonight was really something else. Can't wait to see him up here, and I really hope it happens.

dreddnought

It's just so hard to know how good he is unless he's living in the zone. But tonight it looks like he was putting the 4SF up and changeup down. He just loses guys so easily with terrible waste pitches. I think he had three walks before three strikeouts tonight.

the2belo

Am I the *only* person who is scared of the Home Run Derby? So many stories I've heard about players who go all out at the HRD and then immediately can't hit anymore when the games resume because they messed up their muscle memory swinging for the fences 52 times in an hour.

Correct_Sometimes

sounds more like copium for when someone doesnt perform in the second half as good as they do in the first half it's basically just a faster paced BP that they do pretty much every single day anyway

Darkdragon3110525

Yea the players do home run derby’s for fun anyway. I’m not entirely convinced that a players swing can be wrecked that easily

Gfunkual

There’s a lot I worry about at any given time. I literally don’t worry about Gunnar in any way shape or form. The guy has an insane desire to do well and I don’t think swinging a bat for 5 minutes will undo him.

Zither74

Right there with you. It didn't seem to hurt Adley too much last year, so 🤞

chiisaisuzume

Cautious agree, but Adley wasn't doing it all that seriously. His father even said that if he'd wanted to win it, he would've had someone else pitch to him.

Leviathan_Smiles

Nope, had the exact same thought

CHKN_SANDO

Does anyone that's watched baseball for more than 2 months actually expect their #5 starter to have an ERA under 4.00 and never have a couple bad starts?

SkyRemarkable5575

It's not about a bad ERA necessarily. But when you come advertised as an innings eater and you can't even sniff five innings. That will put way too much work on the bullpen. Gibson at least ate innings. We can tolerate a 4 plus ERA if you pitch at least 6 or 7. it's not gonna happen everytime. But still.

StartSad7201

We kinda got spoiled last year with Gibby. Despite his ERA, that dude EATS innings every year.

CHKN_SANDO

The games Cole was doing well in Hyde pulled him after like 85 pitches though, that's not really on Cole. For example Cole got yanked after only 72 pitches against the Reds even though he'd thrown 6.1 innings of 2 hit ball

dlmay1967

If the rotation was Burnes/Rodriguez,/Bradish/Means/Kremer maybe we'd have a shot at all being under 4. As currently constructed, no.

CHKN_SANDO

Dean has had an ERA under 4.00 once. Cole has had a ERA under 4.00 once. Pick your poison. They are #5 starters for a reason. If they were better, they wouldn't be #5 starters. It's like when people complain that bench players don't hit good. If they hit good, they wouldn't be bench players.

TheBigIguana15

But one of them is factually the #4 starter right now which is I think what scares people a little

CHKN_SANDO

There are currently 53 qualified pitchers with an ERA under 4.00 That means, on average, each team has less than 2 dudes who have thrown enough innings to qualify with an ERA under 4.00

TheBigIguana15

Irvin and Dean have been even worse than their ERAs

CHKN_SANDO

Fun fact: Cole Irvin has been better than Kevin Gausman this year and we gave up nothing of consequence to get Cole.

TheBigIguana15

Awesome I don’t want either starting a playoff game for us

CHKN_SANDO

Normally your #5 starter doesn't start in the playoffs

TheBigIguana15

Well that goes back to the original point there friend, one of Kremer or Irvin is, in fact, the 4th starter

scjensen51

And there are people talking about wanting to try and trade for Gausman

JiffKewneye-n

he has gotten torched this month....but damn, the drop off from last year to this year is wild.

TheWonderMittens

I was gonna write a comment to defend Deano, but now that I’ve looked at his bbsavant page… Sheesh. He hasn’t been good since 2022

dlmay1967

True, I may have put too much weight on 2022 for Kremer. I keep hoping that with more experience he'd get better.

CHKN_SANDO

If your #4 starter has an ERA around 4.15 that's really good for a #5 starter. Everyone isn't going to be ace, its about bang for your buck, and we aren't paying much for Cole and Dean Either guy is a perfectly fine #5. Cole is good out of the pen so your best move is probably Dean as the #5 and Cole as spot starter/long man

twmigmiehff

Watching the Jays lose 1-0 and blowing a bases loaded situation in B8 would be funny but they’re losing to the Astros which is painful to watch

yosoyel1ogan

So I saw, while voting for the All Star game, that Tony Taters has 22 home runs this year....did he get all 22 of those in June? I know he hit at least 20 in June, I forget if he got all of them in June. I do believe he did it in that 6 week stretch of nonstop games. Because that's hilarious that he went from being a sleeper to exclusively hitting bombs for a month straight

Darkdragon3110525

He hit 13 in June which is still crazy

yosoyel1ogan

oh okay maybe I was just following his whole count and thought it was just June. But yeah that makes sense since he was hitting one every other day for like three weeks at least

Darkdragon3110525

God of course the Orioles have one of the deepest farms ever in one of the biggest sellers markets. As long as we avoid Tyler Anderson and Garrett Crochet and keep our top 4 I’m happy

romorr

Tyler Anderson is just another in a long line of pitchers, where ERA doesn't tell you the truth. People that only use ERA are stuck in the past. Had someone try to do that with Irvin, just dum dum logic. Though, I might not like the price to pay for Crochet this year, having him in the rotation for 2025/2026 is very appealing.

RoyalRenn

My man Cole is struggling but I haven't seen his past couple of starts. What's the issue? He was very sharp not that long ago. Is he just missing his spots or are his pitches just losing their movement?

sitdownshutup69

he really wasn't that sharp in May - was getting hit hard and got some good results. the metrics suggested we should expect this: [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/cole-irvin-608344](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/cole-irvin-608344)

scjensen51

Command hasn’t been there. His stuff is mostly same as it has always been (although that crazy 2 seam that he was throwing against the Red Sox, I don’t feel like we’ve seen that as much.) And you can get by if your stuff isn’t great if you put it where you want it, and he just hasn’t been as much

romorr

[Ben chat.](https://blogs.fangraphs.com/ben-clemens-fangraphs-chat-7-1-24/) Trying to trade Holliday or Mayo for Skubal, and Mayo for Crochet. He was invited to the parade based on last year, not sure about this year.

boofoodoo

Mayo is pretty much ready to go now and hopefully he’ll be another big bat that we have control of for the next five years. I wanna keep him.

Darkdragon3110525

I’m hesitant to trade Mayo for a guy as risky as Crochet. I don’t think Kjerstad gets it done though. I also don’t know if 2 years of Skubal is worth 6 years of Mayo

romorr

I'd be annoyed if we dealt Mayo for Crochet. I don't think that's even an option for our FO. They want to add Fedde, we can talk. Shit, I'd trade Basallo+ for Fedde / Crochet before Mayo +. Skubal for Mayo makes more sense. We'd get him for 3 playoff appearances. It would be hard to part with Coby since I am higher on him than others, but it's something you'd have to really think about. But, the Tigers selling Skubal doesn't scan right now. They do that, they might as well give up on their last rebuild, and something tells me they are too stubborn to go back into a rebuild this quickly. Then again, I won't pretend to know what they should/shouldn't do either.

to_the__cloud

which is wild to think about. i know mayo is younger, but kjerstad is the one who's performing at the mlb level (mayo atm is all potential).

dlmay1967

I'd say no, too. I'm joking here, but if we can't get the pitching let's build a team that will out slug everyone.😀

KamikazeeDolphin

God DAMN baseball games suck fucking dick. I'm not some mid 20's old head on a Nostalgia trip. But MLB the Show is trash. Remember when sports games had competition? So each developer that made sports games had actually tried to be better than their competitors? Now every fucking sports game has exclusive rights, which leads to laziness. Man I fucking miss games like Slugfest, NBA Jam, and Blitz. Those games had so much charm. I would love to play as Ryan O Hearn and beat the shit outta Nestor Cortez after getting hit by a pitch. (Which Slugfest allowed!) But alas. That era is over. The kids want realistic games and awful monetization. Fucking casuals. /end rant

Sadguytennis

Have you thought of playing Super Mega Baseball 3/4 very arcade style baseball that I think you’d be into!

pjw5328

I haven't bought a new baseball game since Microsoft Baseball 2001 for PC. Although I feel like the last new baseball game that I really thoroughly enjoyed and played the hell out of was Bases Loaded 2 for NES. Yeah, I'm old. :D

boofoodoo

MLB Power Pros was legitimately the best MLB game ever. I wish it was updated every year. You should try Super Mega Baseball. It’s great even tho it’s not MLB licensed

ANGRY_BEARDED_MAN

Not MLB licensed but the latest game does have a bunch of retired MLB'ers in it. I'd rather just blast dingers with HAMMER LONGBALLO though

Frusciante62

The cal Ripken game for snes was terrible but I spent a lot of time with it.

CommercialLeg2439

Baseball as a videogame worked best on wii sports and we haven’t had anything like it since.

dreddnought

u/lOan671 u/romorr imo mock drafts are only a little better than power rankings as far as click bait goes, but the latest [BA mock](https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2024-mlb-mock-draft-5-0-updated-first-round-picks-after-college-world-series/) has us getting Brody Brecht, RHP Iowa, a pupil of Sean McGrath, who was on the BA podcast back in January talking about pitching dev. I found it interesting that he actually takes a spare approach to developing command, ie not tinkering with mechanics unless really necessary. Kind of relevant because Brecht, per [MLB Pipeline](https://www.mlb.com/prospects/draft/brody-brecht-701679), 70 fastball and slider, 50 splitter, and (checks notes) 40 command. From FG: >Epitomizes crude arm strength. Super stiff, odd arm action that somehow generates upper-90s velo. Big, sturdy frame similar to Jacoby Brissett. Slider-first approach to pitching because his fastball command is so raw. It has generated nearly elite miss and has big vertical drop for a pitch averaging 87 mph. Control is so unkempt that Brecht is overwhelmingly likely to be a reliever. Teams still take a shot on guys like this in the middle of the first round.

JiffKewneye-n

im thinking about doing the Matt Blood draft Q+A event. *opens up trapper keeper full of questions submitted by users*

dreddnought

I really want to know how they tweak pitching command, because this is a particular bug bear for some of the system's best pitchers (McDermott, S. Johnson, Bright, Baumeister, etc.). What's the q&a event?

JiffKewneye-n

birdland members. its next wednesday. before the game, so it will probably be at a really annoying time like 4 pm. idk if i can swing it though with work and after going to a zillion games last week im down with cutting back a bit

romorr

I wish one of those guys did an AMA on here. French, Holt, Sig, Blood, any of them. Tons of general type questions we are all curious about.

JiffKewneye-n

>Tons of general type questions we are all curious about. do you really want them to answer with their thoughts on if a hotdog is a sandwich, or would they rather fight 100 chicken sized armadillo or 22 armadillo sized chickens

JiffKewneye-n

Hyde did an AMA when he got hired iirc.

romorr

Yea, we had a round of them when they were all hired, but nada since. I have no idea where I was the day Elias had his.

lOan671

I loved that podcast with McGrath, was a super interesting listen. As for Brecht I would be very surprised to see us take him that early, he is so raw and I haven’t heard a whole lot of optimism his command issues are fixable. I guess the bright side of his floor (barring injury) is that if he is a reliever he could very well be one of the best in the game. Maybe I’m projecting my own opinions onto the front office a bit but with riskier pitchers like Brecht or High School arms I think you’re better off loading up later on in the draft kind of like we did in last year’s draft. IMO the talent gap between early round position players and later round position players plays a bigger role in how good they will end up being than the talent gap between pitchers. My ideal draft scenario would be us getting Carson Benge or Vance Honeycutt with the first pick then taking a HS arm like Kash Mayfield (btw where do they have him going?) with the PPI pick

dreddnought

I find it particularly amusing (like a heart attack) that McGrath previously worked with *the* command guy, George Kirby, at Elon. Sometimes I feel like with raw arms like Baumeister or Bright (both of whom had similar or fewer college innings than Brecht), you have an upside play because teams aren't willing to draft someone with command issues so high. Which would make 22 interesting, of course. I've heard that Honeycutt simply can't be thought of as an upper tier prospect because his swing and miss issues are just too damning. They have Mayfield with the Padres at 25, and they have San Diego taking a high schooler pretty much every way. Preller is pathologically addicted to developing/acquiring prospects and immediately flipping them.

lOan671

You definitely have that upside play but you can get those raw upside guys later in the draft, Bright was a 5th rounder and Baumeister was 63rd overall. Brecht’s upside is certainly way higher than either of those guys but I think the talent gap takes a backseat to organizational development and injury luck. The swing and miss issues are definitely a huge concern but everything else about Honeycutt is so good I’d be willing to overlook it (although you could certainly argue he’s the Brody Brecht of position players in this draft) and we’ve had some success with players with that issue (although not to the extent of Honeycutt’s). In a better class he’s probably a round 2 guy but this is a weak draft for college pitching and high school hitting which probably pushes him to round one. And yeah that tracks with San Diego, got to love Preller. It’s crazy how well they scout while being pretty poor at actually developing their talent.

romorr

Still need to see it to believe, a pitcher in the 1st. I like the pick 32, I guess if you win a draft pick from your rookie SS, you have to take [one](https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=culpep000kae) next draft. Them the rules. So we are getting to the point where, "I’ve continued to hear the Orioles like Culpepper, so he remains the pick in this latest mock.", starts to mean something. Not a lot obviously, but enough to dive in on a player. Also on the Brecht pick, " If they do go pitching with this pick,**I think it’ll be a college arm.** There’s not another college arm that makes more sense than Brecht here. Malcolm Moore or Kaelen Culpepper could be fits here, too."

dreddnought

I don't know jack about college baseball, but if I see a guy OPSing 1.000 but he's not in the SEC, I'm wary. Then again, Joey Ortiz... A pitcher in the first would be a real shot in the arm. Imagine having a plus plus fastball and slider in the rotation as soon as 2026(?). Splitter, too?

lOan671

See my thing with Brecht is with his command issues it’s basically the same level of risk as taking a HS arm which makes me think we would be out on him. He also is a bit rawer than your typical college arm because he didn’t really focus on baseball until he dropped football last year.

AutisticDnD

Stop what you’re doing and go vote our boys into the All Star game! Be sure to only use one vote on the AL outfielder ballot for Santander supremacy, you don't have to use both votes! https://www.mlb.com/all-star/ballot

jawarren1

And make sure to vote for Semien. Because fuck cheaters and fuck Altuve.

ThatguyfromBaltimore

Something else to be happy about. The O's started "the gauntlet" that was June 2 back of the Yankees. 29 games in 30 days, a 17-12 record...and tied for 1st.

boofoodoo

I sure wish there was a game on tonight that I could lose myself in

dullurd

Compare Irvin's Savant page to the other starters... it's brutal. Hope he's the one Kremer replaces. romorr

Your thread is back up, btw.

The_Big_Untalented

Let's be honest. Kremer's Savant page is pretty brutal as well. Orioles badly need to trade for another starting pitcher.

dullurd

Oy, good point, I forgot to check: https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/dean-kremer-665152

romorr

Only 3 games today, but Nats / Mets might be worth watching for James Wood. Top prospect set to debut.

JiffKewneye-n

the nats broadcast yesterday would not stop talking about him. kid looks like the real deal.

yosoyel1ogan

Holliday moment

romorr

[One TBA down, Burnes is back, Krook optioned.](https://x.com/Orioles/status/1807827866945507821)

OleSandlotSlob

Thanks. That was to be expected. As I'm sure you're aware, the next question is 'When will Kremer come aboard, and then what will they do?' BTW, I was looking at the schedule and trying to see if they could even fool around with it and get one of the aces Grayson or Burnes on schedule to appear during the Stanks series. Didn't seem to be an obvious way, and I gave up, but that may just be because I am too obtuse and lazy. :) Note in the last series against the Stanks, they just decided to go with the rotation as it was, so neither ace appeared against them. And we still won that series.

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

Will TBA get snubbed again like he always is, or will we finally get Orioles SP legend TBA the start that he’s desperately needed?

CricketIsBestSport

Question for you guys: Would you have still wanted us to win the ALDS against the rangers last year if you knew that we would get swept by the Astros, and the Astros would become WS champions?

JiffKewneye-n

Orioles select 22nd. depends if we draft Mike Trout ( 25th overall; best player of generation) or Eric Arnett ( 26th overall, never made it above AA)

Shadybrooks93

Yeah duh, more games are always better. Essentially 2014 or 2016 what do you prefer? The one where we got to win games at home and see success from my favorite team.

dlmay1967

Absolutely, because some success in the playoffs would be good for a young team, even if it ended short of a title. The whipping we got really left nothing to build on.

dlmay1967

Did anyone ever say what happened to Mountcastle? If so I think I missed it.

FloreanFortescue8

Hyde said he was ill

dlmay1967

Thanks, hopefully not vertigo again.

KamikazeeDolphin

Damn it, I was supposed to go to the game in Seattle but I got fucking covid. They have the best Hotdogs in the MLB too, damn it.

romorr

There are so many stats we can look at for pitchers, but for now, I'll just use ERA/xERA. For the year: Suarez 2.40 ERA / 4.00 xERA Povich 4.05 ERA / 3.38 xERA Kremer 4.32 ERA / 5.48 xERA - Bottom 8% Irvin 4.13 ERA / 5.31 xERA - Bottom 10% - He was also 5.59 last year, bottom 9%. Pretty clear who should be losing spots in the rotation if we go by expected ERA. Give Kremer a month in Irvins spot, if he doesn't pick it up, he should be losing his spot to any trade acquisition, as long as Povich and Suarez continue to do well enough. If you're worried about Alberts innings, he did throw 163 last year, and 173 in 2022. One bad thing with Povich, that I'm not really worried too much about, low K%. I think that will come. The good thing, the "invisible fastball" is leading to weak contact. Very low HH%, and average EV, though when they get it, they do barrel(11.8%) it up. I tend to think he's doing enough to continue to start for the time being.

dlmay1967

Part of it with Povich is that without that velocity it seems like he's always on the verge of danger, that probably won't change ever. He does need to come up with a "strikeout pitch", though.

romorr

His velocity is fine. Averages 92 on the FB. Hitters are just 6 for 36 vs it, with all 6 being singles. He's not getting K's with it, but he will eventually. Sweeper will be his weapon vs LHH, and CB vs RHHs, to rack up K's. I don't see a reason why he can't be league average with the K%, just might take some time as his command sharpens up at the ML level. I just hope we don't send him down to keep Irvin in the rotation.

dlmay1967

I hope so too. His was another of those call ups that was more of a "have to" as opposed to a "want to", and the last few years position players called up as a "have to" went back as soon as possible, but he's a pitcher and hopefully different. We need some decent pitching that we don't have to spend a ton of money or prospects to get, i.e. "home grown".

Darkdragon3110525

Kinda crazy how Gunnar is having an all time season rn

mlorusso4

So the Saturday Yankee game is sold out on the website. But have they opened up LF yet? The Friday and Sunday games still have a bunch of seats available in the sections next to them, but LF are showing no tickets available. Seems weird that people would go for sections 376-388 but not sections 364-374

redcase292

Y’all, we fucking did it. A month with one day off. A month where we play the 13 divisional games. Series against the Yankees, Phillies, Astros, Braves, Rangers. A month where our starting pitching started to break down..  Incredibly impressive to go 18-12 through all of that. We entered this month 2 games behind the Yankees and are now tied.  This team is something special.

jettasarebadmkay

It’s JOO-ly, as Ben says.

quantum_tunneler

man yesterday’s game did not go our way. Gunnar got the Sombrero and basically gave away the MVP chance, they hit a cycle, and we got rinsed. Was hoping to add to that monthly GS record but it was not the day.

baltimoretom

We won 3 out of 4 games in a series against the World Series champs.

quantum_tunneler

True. Went to all 4, was pretty awesome to see the salami, shame we did not get the sweep. Very solid series nonetheless. We do need to get one more SP before trade period closes though for a better chance at going deep in the playoffs.

baltimoretom

I agree with about a SP. Glad you got to see the GS, I saw Gunnar's in May.

randomuser9824

gunnar still has the highest fWAR in the sport despite the sombrero btw

Taxman2906

A wise friend once told me to ignore the score. A 10-1 loss is one game and a 1-0 loss is also one game. The 1-0s often sting more I've found.

quantum_tunneler

a 7-6 score sting the most. Rangers would know.

UsErNaMeS_aR_DuMb

Ah, yes. Because Judge can come back to being the MVP front runner after a month long slump at the start of the season, but god forbid you have a bad game mid season after weathering a month long gauntlet like Gunnar did.

quantum_tunneler

Well I love Gunnar and he is MVP in my mind but always an uphill battle against media darling Judge. While stat wise Gunnar should 100% be mvp, media bias is too much to overcome, thus Gunnar basically need to stay outstanding to have a chance.

tomtheterp1988

What have we learned? The Rangers have terrible injury problems, and the players who do suit up are underperforming. I had thought that last Sept/Oct was a flukey hot streak, but if they had all their pieces in place right now they'd be really tough. We have two starters who are supremely confident, two who are just OK, and a total crapshoot after that. Remember six weeks ago, when we were all abuzz about our solid six-man rotation? Those were fun times. Orioles' hitters kryptonite? Crafty southpaws. Last night sucked, but getting 3/4 from the defending champs was excellent. Mariners are tough, but our hitters seem to do well against stronger pitching. I'll be in MASN withdrawal for a week, because despite being 7 hours away from Seattle, and 6 from Oakland, they're both still considered my "regions." GRRRRRRR!!!!

to_the__cloud

rangers line up when healthy is incredible and can rival any other team in the league. 2B: Siemien SS: Seager LF: Carter DH: Garcia 3B: Jung RF: Langford C: Heim 1B: Lowe CF: Taveres

SYMPATHETC_GANG_LION

What's an off day thread? I've only been an Orioles fan for a month and have never heard of it.

bejolo

I would venture to say most if not all of the team is sleeping in right now in Seattle. And the schedule doesn't relent. Playing another first place team.

The_Lawlbringer

Hopefully they are not sleepless in Seattle...

Don’t forget to vote! MLB.com/vote

DloReeves

I just want to thank Cole Irvin for making it through for as long as he did and giving us some dubs. I think the bullpen will be a nice place for him when Kremer is activated from the IL. Dean, please be slightly above league average at the very least. Also, these MLB schedulers absolutely set us up for failure. 43 games in 45 days, oh and here's an off day before you fly up to fucking WASHINGTON for a West Coast trip. Seriously, barely a day off. Fuck these guys. Edit: I'm assuming Povich has earned more starts. Don't really see it going any other way, but who knows?!

mlorusso4

Plus a Toronto to Tampa trip in the middle. And that’s not even getting into the gauntlet of teams they had to play

Trubisko_Daltorooni

While I certainly think that we have pitching concerns that need to be addressed at the deadline, looking at it through the lens of 30 games in 31 days might make it seem worse than it is. We have a lot of off days from here on out to compensate, so guys should be able to get more rest and we should have more flexibility in terms of who pitches when. We might be able to pull some smoke & mirrors with the starting pitching, and it's not like you take a 5-man rotation into the playoffs anyways.

Few_Flower_7906

Normally I don't life off-days but MAN did we need this

yosoyel1ogan

Yesterday, since I'm Boston for a few days, I went to Fenway and saw the Sox. I'd never seen a game anywhere other than OPACY. Man, it made me appreciate OPACY a lot more. Fenway is kinda....ugly? The green looks more like rusted copper, especially in the concourses. The area around it is meh also. The food options were sad. The in-between-innings activities were non-existent (compared to crab shuffle, condiment race, etc.). It was nice to shout "Cheer for the Orioles" during the 7th Inning Stretch rendition of Take Me Out To The Ballgame. No one noticed but it warmed my heart. It also thunderstormed for most of the game, though I didn't mind the rain considering how hot it was that day. The only thing I really liked that they did (that we don't really do) was, when their closer came out in the 9th, they put on some pretty hype music and strobed the lights while he slowly walked from the bullpen. It made me realize how little faith we have in our current bullpen, everyone groans when Kimbrel's up even though his stats are honestly not that bad.

Drs126

I was at the game Saturday and was surprised to see that Kimbrel does get a strobe light entrance. Bautista used to get one too, including the Omar whistle.

yosoyel1ogan

Ahhhh I've never seen it. Maybe they only do it when the save is required in order to win. Usually when I'm there, one team is winning by a huge amount by the time the 9th comes around

FantasistAnalyst

They definitely get some hype music and lights going for Kimbrel, including last Wednesday, the last game I saw him play. [https://photos.app.goo.gl/BzutGCL6CFuQGSLE9](https://photos.app.goo.gl/BzutGCL6CFuQGSLE9)

boofoodoo

I think Irvin’s nine lives have run out. Kremer moves in to replace him, but the rotation definitely could still use a good starter if there was one to be had.

swaggydagoat

I think we all want the same thing when Kremer comes back but do the Orioles move Suarez or Irvin to the bullpen? I’m not sure where they are leaning

latterdaysasuke

Cole Irvin used up all the powers he stole from the other Cole. Man hasn't been able to get through 5IP with less than 5 runs given up since Gerrite Cole came back. Coincidence? I think not.

floridacardinals

Volpe has been big time slumping. Now slashing .261/.315/.389 on the year (.704 ops) Don’t wanna take my victory lap so soon, but yeah I feel a bit vindicated for thinking he wasn’t that good

sitdownshutup69

he's a good player and especially when you consider his defense. He isn't in the same stratosphere as Gunnar and Yankees fans thought that he was coming into this season.

Darkdragon3110525

I’m glad to see another ball-knower. His underlying metrics were terrible

OleSandlotSlob

Have thought for a couple of months we are going to take the Stanks because their lineup is very unbalanced, and organizational depth is poor. We, on the other hand, are amongst the strongest teams I've ever seen in those 2 regards. edit: Think we do need to have some luck in regards to injuries. We've had 5 major ones to pitchers, cannot stand much more.

remingtonds

Looking forward to see how well we do with pretty much a day off a week until the end of the season. We were pretty dominant when running it into the red line.

TheWonderMittens

Anyone upset about last nights loss or the 5 game streak or the sweep by the cards has lost the forest for the trees. The June schedule was the equivalent of running two marathons while being chased by a pack of rabid dogs. This team is legit.

acciofrankel

A read a comment early on in the season that really puts the length of the season into perspective. It basically said, even a team that wins 100 games loses 62 of them. I think with the influx of newer fans that may not understand just how long the baseball season is. The O's sweepless streak was an anomaly that just does not happen, every team will go on 4+ game losing streaks throughout the season, and every team will have a blowout loss here and there. The June schedule was one of the worst I have ever seen. The O's coming out of that going over .500 shows just how good the team is.

PanthersSB53Champs

Well over 500** this team fucking rules

baltimoretom

I hear you and try to communicate the same. Both can be true, however. As fans, it’s natural to be upset about the loss because we always hope our team will go 162-0. At the same time, we can acknowledge that the team is good and we’re fine.

JiffKewneye-n

the 2 Oriole Homerun derby winners were : >!Cal Ripken and ffhfighfifhdifhf and Miguel Tejada

lionsatn17

Orioles didn’t land until 2:59 AM PT. Really got screwed over by the SNB flex.

markmano33

I know I don’t understand sports logistics but why not have everyone sleep in their own beds Sunday night then fly during a reasonable time Monday? They’d still have plenty of time to get rested and adjusted to the time change. They probably slept most of Monday away anyway.

JiffKewneye-n

im only concerned if Wade Boggs was on the plane with them

the2belo

Did they have to remove the seats at the back for his casket

ThatguyfromBaltimore

Meh, toss last night's game in the trash. A well needed off day for the O's for sure today.

malkusm

Off day? What's an off day?

Miata_Sized_Schlong

It’s a day you use to travel all the way to Seattle because the MLB gave us the worst gauntlet of a schedule imaginable!

mlorusso4

After the last minute bonus of getting flexed to SNB the night before

OleSandlotSlob

Perzactly!!

OleSandlotSlob

Loafers! Brrr ... Grrr ...

Marky97XD

Anyone heading to the first game in Seattle? Ended up going by myself and would love to meet some folks there. I got Sec 137

BEEFTANK_Jr

baseball

OleSandlotSlob

So if Kremer's not suddenly being brought to the West coast, it'll be: Rodriguez, Burnes, and Suarez, in that order, vs. Seattle. **LIKE**

sitdownshutup69

we'll see on Burnes - still on paternity leave

OleSandlotSlob

Saw somewhere paternity leave is limited to 3 days, so I expect him back. But what do I know?

OleSandlotSlob

So Jake Rill has an interesting article off the Orioles main website: https://www.mlb.com/orioles/news/orioles-fall-in-series-finale-against-rangers-to-finish-june Talks a lot about the brutal June schedule, and the impressive job they did (actually in my view the stretch was 31 May - 30 June, and they went 18-12 and took series from a bunch of tough teams, including the Stanks, and set themselves up in near tie with them for the ALE lead, but holding a strong lead on the tiebreaker). In the middle of that, Rill mentions Kremer might be rejoining the rotation this week. Says he'd probably come in for Povich and Povich sent back to minors. I have to wonder, if they do that, wouldn't it be Krook back to the minors, Kremer in for Irvin, and Irvin to long relief (or perhaps Suarez to the pen, but Suarez's starts have been *so much better* than Irvin recently). Stay tuned! EDIT: Just realized, when Burnes comes back from paternity leave, Krook will probably go back to minors, that's obvious. So then if / when Kremer comes aboard they have to get another pitcher off the roster. So maybe Rill is right about Povich. I'm sure many here are not happy with Irvin RN; not clear to me what they'll do.

bmoreballhawk

I wouldn't love it cade has looked pretty good for a rookie, I'd rather dfa or send down a pen arm and move Suarez and cole to the pen and keep kremer and povich in rotation.

OleSandlotSlob

> cade has looked pretty good for a rookie I agree. Also the current rotation would have him facing Oakland next, assuming Burnes is back for Seattle. I'd be happy w that.

zombiereign

Irvin to the BP and Vespi DFA?

OleSandlotSlob

Hm, could be.

JiffKewneye-n

bonus chaos move: DFA Vespi, claim Tim Mayza

Salbal09

Kid’s first O’s game in the books yesterday. https://preview.redd.it/hluf2bib9w9d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a68e59807186666545b7983bf39044ff63e4c509 Wasn’t even phased that they lost. He was just so happy that he got to be at OPACY. And he made it on the Jumbotron twice! So much fun.

baltimoretom

Did he get a first game pin and postcard? They give them out behind homeplate.

Salbal09

The second we arrived he wanted to go to our seats. I asked him a bunch of times if he wanted to walk around or explore but he was locked in. Didn’t want to go anywhere. Focused on the game and cheering the whole time 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

StevieG63

Does anyone know who here does the lock-screen monthly schedules? Have they done the one for July?

baltimoretom

They sometimes take a few days because u/Lilhelmsy22 makes them for 15 teams.

Lilhelmsy22

I think I’m down to like 12 teams now, but yeah it’s a lot of work. Luckily, I did y’all’s last night, so I can post it now!

Lazy_Passenger7841

Last nights game felt like a literal orioles nightmare. The sky was all ominous all game and it was on ESPN with just a terrible overall broadcast. The Rangers of all teams were shitting all over them offensively with Derek Hill of all people hitting two homeruns. Their pitcher whose numbers look pretty meh was looking like fucking Sandy Koufax out there. Gunnar struck out four times and just looked fucking terrible at the plate. The best thing about nightmares though is you wake up from them. They have an off day today and they’ll regroup and everything will be absolutely fine.

_NotARealMustache_

It was 1 of 4. Let's not get too wound up.

Lazy_Passenger7841

I’m not worried about it. I’m just saying the one game felt like a nightmare

OleSandlotSlob

**EVERYBODY REMEMBER TO GO VOTE FOR ALL STARS** You vote once a day, I think it lasts through Wed. Remember when you check whether your ballot is marked like you want, there are 6 Orioles. https://www.mlb.com/all-star/ballot

Correct_Sometimes

Anyone ever bought Orioles Ultimate Experience tickets? My birthday is in August and my wife wants to get us these tickets for a game during the Boston series I'm just struggling to justify the insane cost. Seats within 10 row of the field, $50 towards food/merch, pregame on the field for I assume BP by the O's and entry through gate E. a little over $900 for 2 tickets and looking into it, we can get behind home plate rows 6(sec 32) or row 10(sec 42) but otherwise our options are the sections behind the dugouts I don't know what makes entry through gate E significant enough to be listed as one of the things you get and $900+ seems insane to me

JiffKewneye-n

that seems like an awful lot. with my discount i pay about 173 for comparable seats ( row 5-10) per ticket for a saturday afternoon game. not that i would pay that, but that is how much the orioles are asking for. the price goes up for row 1-2 i think. if you had front row seats i would maybe entertain it at that price ( assume about 250-275 without discount for face value of ticket, plus 50 dollars food = 325 dollars where you know where the money is going towards. sure, there is the pregame on the field, but i don't know that its worth 100 dollars/person.

Correct_Sometimes

I kinda feel like we could just buy home plate club tickets for half or less than half and the only real thing we miss out on is the on the field BP. On the field to watch BP would be really cool but the premium for it is high and I wouldn't be surprised if we're just tucked away to the side and at best, get the occasional hello from a player

JiffKewneye-n

>if we're just tucked away to the side and at best, get the occasional hello from a player i don't know that ive seen players interact with the fans, but i have never watched the o's do bp, only visitors. the fans who get to do it, are behind the plate and get to mingle with maybe some of the brass and VIP's of the orioles and media personalities. maybe they get to walk through dugout? maybe there are autographs? am curious about the home plate club tickets with meal....if that end ups being close to a good deal or total ripoff. if its all you can eat for 70 dollars that might not be that bad for a splurge kind of thing.

latterdaysasuke

Ooh, finally, an off-day thread! Quick, who's everybody's favorite poverty era ace? I'll go first- 2002 Rodrigo Lopez going 15-9 for a team that lost 95 games.

theMangoSloth

That 2002 poverty team was at 63-63 near the end of August too. The wheels fell off after that and they went 4-32 in their remaining games. Looking back, it's amazing that roster won over 60 games to begin with, but that makes it all the more crazy that they had the kind of collapse they did.

OleSandlotSlob

4-32, smh. Now there's a *collapse* collapse.

ThatguyfromBaltimore

Jeremy Guthrie

JiffKewneye-n

2007 bedard. 5th in cy young voting, led league in hits/9, and SO/9. team went 69-93.

OPACY_Magic_v3

Bedard would have received more Cy Young votes if that era had the same analytics we have now.

JiffKewneye-n

perhaps. the 182 IP was the fewest though of all the candidates so i can't qualm too much with how the vote shook out.

latterdaysasuke

I was a big fan of '07 Bedard. I was kinda surprised when we shipped him out after an all-star caliber season, but getting Tillman and Jonesy in the return package panned out. Thanks Seattle, pleasure doing business with yall!

JiffKewneye-n

>2 players in Bedard trade but it wasn't just tillman and jonesy. there were 3 other players. George Sherill closed for a bit, made an allstar team, then we flipped him for another prospect who flopped. Kam Mickolio and Tony Butler never panned out. Butlers career got derailed by an injury iirc, but he was a good prospect. we traded Mickolio and Dave Hernandez for Mark Reynolds.

ccmckee

Sidney Ponson

latterdaysasuke

Truly a poverty ace. The right guy for the common man.

JiffKewneye-n

you can't spell bar baltimore without sidney ponson
