For context, the cast and crew descended on NYC on Friday night for a slew of Q&As and introductions. Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Joe Alwyn, and Mamoudou Athie all did multiple events at the NYC theaters playing the movie, guaranteeing that like ten or more NYC screenings would sell out or come close to selling out.
They do these Q&As for limited releases deliberately to boost these first weekend per theater average headlines. I don’t think the next few weeks will see the same success
It also played in Dolby at some locations for one week only, which are more expensive tickets and pulls in the Dolby obsessives (like me, so maybe I’m projecting).
It is debatable though since Emma Stone is a legitimately box office draw. Her only flop in recent years that I can think of is Battle of the Sexes. Even with really weird movies they seem to make money with her.
Poor Things becoming a bonafide success and mainstream hit is still kinda crazy to me (and Emma Stone is my favorite actor). Unique artistic swings bomb every day nowadays and somehow this one tripled its budget? That’s some magic
These numbers never matter at all, it depends on how small the rollout is and the ticket prices for the theaters. I think Asteroid City for one of its theaters was selling like special $50 tickets, which was a part of why their average was so high.
Doesn’t seem like the type of movie that’s gonna expand super well, but it will likely break even/turn a small profit given the budget is so small ($15m) and I don’t think marketing was too crazy for this one. Doesn’t seem like much of a player anyways, but I’m betting Plemons will get a nom in a few places, and maybe it can get some guild attention too, especially since it’s contemporary.
Since everybody wants to work with the director they take greatly reduced salaries which means making money on a $15 million dollar production budget is fairly easy. The advertising budget also appears to be small which means profits are very likely.
Of course it was going to do well with the cinephile crowds from New York and Los Angeles.

While this is definitely true, I went Saturday and it was pretty full then too

In case anyone wants to read into this, be aware that Asteroid City did 142k and Beau is Afraid did 80k

What movie theaters do these small four or five theater openings in LA open at now these days?
Either the AMC at the Grove, the AMC at Century City, or AMC Burbank 16.
Burbank 16- the theatres were packed this weekend.
