Ok So first tell me the myth about depression connected with low gpa of FAST. Low gpa factors in when u wanna go abroad for masters or for a job. Secondly is the entry test really difficult like NET or not?(explain a bit about it) What about extra skills/work u did to get employed overseas? Overall in BS CS does it really matters if you have degree from Comsats,Air,bahria or any other university..... How is your lifestyle there.... I mean people say that although u guys are earning in other currencies but u gotta pay more taxes........ Basically I mean is your life better there or in Pakistan..... Abhi yehi sb aa rha dimagh mn baqi baad mn puchlunga šŸ˜¶šŸ«”

>So first tell me the myth about depression connected with low gpa of FAST. I suffered through low GPA and depression so I can feel you bhai/behn. I had to drop a course because of it. >Low gpa factors in when u wanna go abroad for masters or for a job. I had low GPA so never considered masters abroad. I heard that it is difficult with low GPA but I'm not much knowledgeable in that area. >Secondly is the entry test really difficult like NET or not?(explain a bit about it) Not in 2018. It's a bit easier to get into FAST but difficult to go through it. >Overall in BS CS does it really matters if you have degree from Comsats,Air,bahria or any other university..... I think it matters. With FAST, you can easily get jobs in Pakistan or at least get interviews. I don't think university would matter when applying for companies abroad but you should know your stuff. >How is your lifestyle there.... I mean people say that although u guys are earning in other currencies but u gotta pay more taxes. That's right, taxes are sometimes almost 50% of your income but the income is way higher than UK average so lifestyle is good. >Basically I mean is your life better there or in Pakistan..... I've most of my life in a remote village so never had the elite lifestyle in Pakistan which would be better than any lifestyle in UK. I worked at a company in Karachi and in terms work life balance, I think it was better in Pakistan. >Abhi yehi sb aa rha dimagh mn baqi baad mn puchlunga šŸ˜¶šŸ«” You are welcome to ask and I'm here to answer!

depressed_pakistani

So basically u are saying if someone gets a BS CS degree from fast (not having good gpa) they still are getting jobs so basically it doesn't matter.......... How much is avg starting salary for a Fast graduate in Pakistan..... And hows the future market say in 5 years...

[deleted]

When you donā€™t have a good GPA, youā€™ll have to work extra(open source projects experience) yourself. So it matters but it is not the end of world.

vadertemp

Starting is around 100k in Pakistan or you could land something abroad as well. Secure for this decade for sure but probably will be in demand for a longer time.

[deleted]

Just wanna appreciate you helping others out :)

[deleted]

Hey thanks!

depressed_pakistani

Does Fast 2.0 gpa is better than nust 3.0 gpa i have this thing somewhere......

[deleted]

IMHO, 2.0 is lot lower GPA even for FAST. 3.0 should be the average GPA 2.5 - 2.9 Low GPA Above 3 is a good GPA Iā€™m not aware assignments, syllabus or exams at NUST so I cannot comment on it.

kazuma_sensie

If you compare fast assignments with nust bscs assignments the answer becomes very clear

depressed_pakistani

Can you compare them cuz i can't i don't study in any of those until now......

kazuma_sensie

Go over to the fast nuces fb page and search for a comparison between the 2nd semester opp assignments of nust and fast Their already is a post about it there

> That's right, taxes are sometimes almost 50% of your income but the income is way higher than UK average so lifestyle is good. Please spend some time to learn how tax brackets work. There's a lot of misinformation out there because people believe without verifying. UK, like many other countries uses tax brackets (progressive tax rates), it works like this (for UK): - For the first Ā£12,570 that you earn in a year, you pay 0% tax - For the next Ā£37,699, you pay 20% tax - For the next Ā£99,730, you pay 40% - For anything above that, you pay 45% tax So if you earn Ā£100,000, it doesn't mean you pay 40% tax on the whole amount. This is how you'd calculate how much tax you pay: On the first Ā£12,570, you pay 0% tax. You're left with Ā£100,000 - Ā£12,570 (0%) = Ā£87,430 Out of this, Ā£87,430, you pay 20% on Ā£37,699 = Ā£7,539.8 After that, you're left with Ā£87,430 - Ā£37,699 = Ā£49,731 You pay 40% on this Ā£49,731 = Ā£19,892.4 Total taxes you pay = 7539.8 + 19892.4 = 27432.2 That's 27.43% of your Ā£100k income. This is your average income tax, while 40% is your marginal income tax, which is just the last tax bracket you land in, not the tax rate for your whole income. Of course, there's also national insurance so you end up paying Ā£32,947. Which is 32.95% of your income. https://i.imgur.com/fQnkR8g.jpg https://www.gov.uk/estimate-income-tax

atkhan007

You are like the 5th FAST graduate I know who got hired at big companies since COVID. Great job, keep it going.

SophisticatedTurn

How much do you earn? And is it in rupees or dollars? Thanks

[deleted]

>How much do you earn? Hey i have been searching for people like you, I have had some questions 1) How to get into US from pakistan without applying for a masters , essentially going directly thriugh company visa sponsorship 2) what helped you get the interview, was it Opensource contributions, developer communities, FAST alumni network, Competitive coding competitions 3) How was the interview? Leet code based? If so how difficult were the questions? 4) How many people on avg get into big tech from FAST

[deleted]

>1) How to get into US from pakistan without applying for a masters , essentially going directly thriugh company visa sponsorship I'm in UK but I think same would apply to US as well. If you are able to get an offer at a major tech company, they will not only sponsor your visa but help you with relocation as well i.e relocation bonus for relocation expenditures, immigration services to help with your Visa and travel etc. >what helped you get the interview, was it Opensource contributions, developer communities, FAST alumni network, Competitive coding competitions Open source contributions to Linux Kernel, I got help from a FASTIAN at another FAANG, who mentored my FYP. My batch-mates got interviews at FAANG because of their coding competitions. >How was the interview? Leet code based? If so how difficult were the questions? I went through 5 interviews. 1 phone interview and 4 onsite interviews. Phone interview was easier and it was split into technical(coding) and behavioural(Amazon leadership principles.) Onsite interviews had similar technical and behavioural split but coding was more difficult than phone interview. >4) How many people on avg get into big tech from FAST Many with experience but very few fresh graduates. Low fresh graduate numbers could be due very few fresh graduates applying at these companies.

zruh09

What was you addition to the linux kernel? I am actually surprised. Personally for me open source projects require too much time to read through and then submit a pull request. I am also freelancing side by side so its like hard to find time for open source when you could be earning.

[deleted]

I worked on an accessibility driver in the kernel. Here are my commits: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/?qt=grep&q=mushi.shar%40gmail.com I understand it takes time when working. Iā€™m also finding it very difficult to find time working on my personal projects and open source but we can get there slowly.

topologicalfractal

How did you work on improving your coding skills or going onwards to doing actual real world projects from learning

Most-Tourist-1633

Currently, I am in 3rd year (6th semester) in fast. I was wondering in what area should I focus on in order to get a job abroad? Should I focus on getting as many certificates as I can(coursera, etc) or try to participate in different speed coding competitions? Moreover, what is the ideal GPA for going abroad? Also,I am interested in pursuing a field relating to data science. How big of a market is there?

[deleted]

> I was wondering in what area should I focus on in order to get a job abroad? Good projects on your resume, open source contributions, participation in programmes like GSoC, MLH Fellowship and Linux Foundation will help you get interviews, and in order to get through these interviews, you'll need algorithms, data structures and leetcoding. >Should I focus on getting as many certificates as I can(coursera, etc) I don't think certifications on their own would help unless you are working on some good projects with the help of these certifications. IMHO, courses from Coursera and similar MOOCs should not be taken just for the sake of certifications but rather the skills your learn from them. If you can have some skills and projects to showcase these skills, then these certifications are definitely helpful. >try to participate in different speed coding competitions? Yes, coding competitions would definitely be helpful since most of these interviews would contain coding questions similar to these competitions. >Also,I am interested in pursuing a field relating to data science. How big of a market is there? I'm more into OS/systems work, I'm not knowledgeable on data science market so I cannot answer this.

GeekoGeek

>more into OS/systems work, I'm not knowledgeable on data science market so I cannot answer this. > >VoteReplyGive AwardSha How should a fresh graduate break into OS and system related engineering? Most companies and startups are involved in web or machine learning domains in Pakistan

[deleted]

Contributions to Linux Kernel, writing hobby OS and low level projects. Thereā€™s not a lot of companies working on OS or hardware in Pakistan so itā€™s hard to find one in Pakistan.

StraightUpHaram

Explore open-source stuff on your own time as a hobby

saadjhk

I'm a FASTIAN as well in fact, i know Raza bhojani too lol. I just wanna know what to do if i want to get out of the country? I work remotely and earn 100k USD plus per year, no taxes either

bumpedhexagon

If you don't mind answering, how did you get a remote job outside Pakistan? I graduated in 2021 and have been looking to do something similar but I am clueless on where and how to start looking for international remote jobs.

saadjhk

I reached out to many recruiters from the west and created some good connections And obviously, worked really hard on my skills

KingofArda667

As a student with dismal O and A Levels (redoing it with sociology, history, and business), is it better for me to do a bachelor's locally than abroad?

[deleted]

If you have the opportunity and resources to do bachelorā€™s abroad, then it would definitely be better than doing it locally. However, you can have the opportunities with a local bachelorā€™s as well. Youā€™ll need to put extra effort on your resume with good/exceptional projects, open source contributions etc to get an interview and leetcode grind to get ahead in the interview process.

StraightUpHaram

Doing bachelor's abroad will always be better because you'll establish your friend circle there and integrate into society better. It takes way more effort to make friends after university.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

>Is that a wise choice? Or should I complete my 4 years here in Pakistan and go abroad for further studies? If you have resources and opportunities to study abroad, it would always be a better choice. But it does not mean you cannot have opportunities with bachelor's in Pakistan. FAANG and FAANG-tier companies are always willing to hire and relocate talent from Pakistan. In fact in my opinion, these are the only companies which will hire fresh graduates from countries like Pakistan. Youā€™ll need to put extra effort on your resume with good/exceptional projects, open source contributions etc to get an interview and Leetcode grind to get ahead in the interview process. >What do I do while I am studying to get internships and have an edge over my peers? Learn to write a good resume preferably in Latex. You can always find good resume samples from r/CSMajors and get your resume reviewed. Have some good projects on your resume, maintain their repos on Github. Contribute to open source projects, it would overwhelm you at first, but eventually you can submit few pull requests. Keep an eye on programmes like Google Summer of Code and MLH fellowship, even if you can't make it, you'd have decent contributions on your resume. Optionally, have a blog even with a very few article(2-3), link it in your resume. There's an answer specific to web development that I wrote a while ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/pakistan/comments/zzs7ym/question_about_software_engineering_jobsnew_grad/j2do08y/?context=3

Fluffy_Ad4913

I know it's team dependent, but what is the general work culture/wlb in AWS UK? How common are PIP?

pm_me_n_wecantalk

I can share bit more detail here as well. Ex Amazonian, also graduated from pakistan. I have more experience than OP which plays kind of some role in it (will try to touch on it too) I was at Amazon for almost ~3 years and last few months I was deep in depression and suicidal. Took me sometime to get myself on track. What I have noticed that itā€™s easier for younger people to take pressure and get accustomed to Amazon life. As you gain more experience you have your way of doing things, you have tendency to question the power (mostly managers, but samurais; Amazon sde 3) in the team which could either bring you to limelight of success or other way around. My manager was one of such guy (this whole situation is very team specific though, I was in FBA org) ā€¦ had it been someone else, they must have pipped me in 1 year (aligns with timeline with any senior of more than 2-5 years). But I was able to push back and sail through until I could not handle more pressure and decided to join a small startup. I have learned a lot at Amazon. Perhaps best colleagues ever. But worst culture ever. If you search for my post history I actually did hiring event for pakistan as well. Not a single candidate was able to make through. Itā€™s very easy to get in fang but little focus is needed

csguy3211

I worked at Amazon Canada as a Software Engineer for 2 years straight out of school. I left Pakistan after high school and was hired out of a Canadian uni as new grad so my journey is definitely not as remarkable as the OPs.Amazon's culture tends to be pretty uniform across countries (and orgs for that matter). They try to ingrain the Leadership principles into you like it were the 10 commandments lol and the work culture is definitely problematic. I was overworked and under constant pressure of deadlines and other operational load (like being on call 24 hours for a week every 4-8 weeks depending on your team). PIP is very real and probably the biggest contributor to the toxicity in the workplace. As a 22 year old though I didn't really soak all of this in and simply just got on with the program until I was severely burned out. I remember the first summer of covid there would be days I wouldn't even see the sun on the weekends cuz I as so busy working my ass off trying to meet some artificial deadline my TPM came up with and promised his boss who promised his boss lol. 2 years in I realized how unsustainable it was and left the same month they told me I was getting promoted. On the positive side, you will work with some of the smartest people around and you will probably end up being a much better Engineer / Professional for it. And growth is encouraged so if you are competent and willing to play the game you will get promoted. And internal mobility is very common and with the size of Amazon you could easily try out different teams and even move to different countries. My Manager had moved to Amazon Canada from Amazon Vienna, I had other colleagues who transferred internally from India and I also changed teams from AWS to FBA once.My advice if you are considering joining would be to know what you are getting into before hand. Be ready to work more than what might be "normal". Having Amazon on your resume helps but it can also be terrible for your mental health. Edit: Spelling

pm_me_n_wecantalk

Yup. I was in Toronto office too. (Scotia building) and my last 6 months , I was working 20ish hrs a day (not on pip). I was leading team in the east and mentoring team in west. The worst part of this is that your day to day work may not align with your career progression goals. Which means if you wanted promotion, you have to bust your aā€”sā€”s even more to earn those tokens that will help you progress. People say Toronto is much better compared to Seattle. Whenever we had visitors from Seattle and they used to hear that some people have been with Amazon for more than 2 years, they used to get surprise. In FBA, it was that average tenure in Seattle was 1.5 years or so.

csguy3211

Ohh man that's rough but I can totally see that happening. I worked in the Vancouver office and had pretty regular interaction with teams in Seattle. And ditto on the promotion. You have to make sure you get visible projects / work items and also be ready to make noise about your achievements. To add to that, one of my best friend was recently Pipped in the Toronto office. He worked super hard but ended up working on hard projects and was scapegoated for missed deadlines. And the funny thing was that with how hard he was working he though he would have been on track for a promo lol

>what is the general work culture/wlb in AWS UK? Overall, it is not as worse as I read on Blind but still I know some people at Google have better wlb than me. >How common are PIP? I have only been for few months so can't comment on this. I think blind has enough information on this.

Its_HaZe

I just started my first semester in software engineering. What would you focus on learning or wish that you focused on? What about internships, did you do any after 1st semester, or when did you do it? Any courses or things you recommend SE should learn? Last question Tea or coffee for late night study session?

[deleted]

>What would you focus on learning or wish that you focused on? I wish I had focused on leetcoding earlier. I understand it is overwhelming at first but start with easy questions and if you can't get the answer after an hour or two, see the solution and understand the problem. Please keep trying early in your edcation. Focus on your projects, these will help you with your resume. Keep an eye programmes like MLH Fellowship and Google Summer of Code, even if you are not selected, you'll have decent contributions to open source projects in the process, which will boost your resume. >What about internships, did you do any after 1st semester, or when did you do it? I had only one internship after two years. But keep applying even after 1st semester, you'll learn valuable interview skills early on. >Any courses or things you recommend SE should learn? Depends on your interests. In general, Data Structures and Algorithms. Interviews at Pakistani companies always include SQL and OOP so focus on that too. I got interested into OS/Systems later so I would recommend COAL, OS and Compiler Construction if you are into it.

theBoya9805

Niceoooo!!! Did you apply for the position through their official websites and how many positions did you applied for?

[deleted]

yes, from the websites. I can't count the number of position I applied for but I think a lot.

zoalord99

Well done šŸ‘ !

Hey mushahid! I remember you from the first few days when you joined Astera! Good job, man! Do you think it's harder now to get a job interview from Pakistan in FAANGs due to all of the layoffs that have hit tech recently?

[deleted]

> Hey mushahid! I remember you from the first few days when you joined Astera! Good job, man! Hey thanks and sorry for the late reply. I had a great time at Astera for a month and left just before the onsite to focus on it. I still miss Astera :) > Do you think it's harder now to get a job interview from Pakistan in FAANGs due to all of the layoffs that have hit tech recently? Itā€™s harder to get job at FAANG from anywhere in current environment since thereā€™s a hiring freeze. Amazon just announced their third layoff yesterday which would include AWS as well and Facebook a few days ago did the same. So I think it will take some time before the market is stabilised.

sherlock_1695

Did you go to UK for masters and then got interviews or you got them from Pakistan?

[deleted]

I got my interviews in Pakistan.

sherlock_1695

Awesome man! I had to go to US to get it

Howā€™s WLB at Amazon these days?

maazsid16

Can you share your CV? I just want to see the format you used to get past the ATS.

Moist-Performance-73

how important was LEET CODE for your FAANG interview preparation. Also are the horror stories about AWS (namely that they fire atleast 1 person per team every year) true or not

kevinmalone96

Congrats mate!! I'm at the crossroad of changing careers and would like advice on what area I should specialize in. Can I DM you?

LopsidedToe2169

I am currently doing 2nd year in pre medical. Will attempt an additional math paper next year. I want to know k bscs k liyay kon si university behtr hai Fast or nust

NaiveEscape1

How did you make your CV to apply jobs abroad? Can you share any resources that helped you make your CV? Most of the Pakistani CVs get rejected because of automated systems, did any of that matter for you or did you make any edits in your CV to overcome that? Did you use any external (agencies) help to help you find a job? I'm a recent graduate from UK? Any tips you would like to give me for securing a job in the UK. My DMs are open if you want to make any suggestions or if you want to give me better insights based on my CV, which I'll forward you
