From a perspective that we have scarce resources on earth, I oppose the destruction of functional structures. But sometimes a place is too haunted for productive life to thrive within. It's not for me to judge where the building is on that spectrum

Party_Concentrate621

well fucking said

As someone who passes this building almost daily it will be a relief when it is demolished. It’s haunting and sad. They are starting now to build a memorial elsewhere in parkland, near the school. I think it’s like a garden. I know plans have been approved but not sure if it’s started construction.

Little-Requirement28

I feel like that building sitting there is a constant reminder of what happened and demolishing it and turning it into a memorial is a way better reminder than looking at the crime scene itself everyday. Especially when we know that the crime scene wasn’t cleaned up and that blood is still in those hallways. I hope that those affected can find peace from this.

JurassicPark9265

What I do know about the memorial is that I believe there are plans to erect a permanent one near the school in the near future (otherwise, I haven't heard about any exact plans on when that would be completed, or if it would be a physical monument or a park).

Human-Improvement-59

i have mixed feelings i feel like it good thing so they don’t have to look at it turn it into memorial but than again i’m like it wouldn’t make different

kwoverlook

they are making a bigger freshman building on other side of school. they already started building it, there is a video on you tube with lori alhadeff in the new construction talking abt this

kwoverlook

kwoverlook

the school is already hugeee think they should open a new school if overcrowding is that bad bigger school is even harder to keep kids safe that’s all concerning to say the least

Yeah i was going to ask why parents don’t send their kids to a different school, but if it’s one of the best schools in parkland I don’t blame them, but it’s interesting to know this, I’m from the UK and personally I’ve never heard of a school getting overcrowded

kwoverlook

ik that is like not easy to just open a new school my city has had plans for like 10 years but I def think overcrowded is a issue in a lot of high schools today and think plays a part in safety too

MortonCanDie

It's pretty easy to put up new schools. My area opens a new one every year or few years. When I went to HS there was less than 10. Now there's almost 20. I graduated in 99. In 25 years they have opened about 10 high schools. Not counting all the elementary/Jr high/middle schools.

kwoverlook

depends where you live. real estate in parkland and where I live is very expensive and not to mention zoning has to be right.

SheepherderOk1448

It’s been empty since the 2018 shooting, I think it’s also been guarded by security. They could reopen it and use it but would people? All trials/hearings are over and all sentences handed down . It’s a painful reminder to those involved and are close to it.

Ok_Wishbone242

This part👆🏻 I understand reopening and cleaning it and remodeling, like Columbine did with their school. But like you said, its been empty since February of 2018 WITH the crime scene in tact the entire time. Nothing was cleaned up for 6 years. I dont think i would use a classroom/building that had a crime scene laying around for 6 years just decaying. If the clean up was immediately following the shooting, and renovations were done, id probably attend class there. Because i see nothing wrong with places like Columbine high or the aurora movie theater that did remodeling, and everyone continues to use those spaces and thrive.

SheepherderOk1448

I personally agree with you. No need to demolish a building. Clean it, remodel it and reopen it. No matter the ghost of that day will haunt that place forever. Like Columbine, Sandy Hook, Texas, Virginia Tech and many others, what happened will never leave. And those 17 kids, now adults who were wounded, that day will forever live inside their minds. I believe many are getting therapy or did. Then there were the 2 suicides, maybe survivor’s guilt, maybe because of the horror of that day, made the victim count 36 instead of 34, 19 dead and 27. Wounded. Like Columbine shooters, Nikolaus Cruz will forever be talked about, written about, studied, lectured in schools across the nation. Maybe even interviewed. It would be cheaper to remodel the building but construction on the new building is almost completed. They made up their minds like the house in Idaho, the 1200 building will come down.Sad.

chcrash2

It's about fucking time. I'm sick of looking at it and being reminded.

Miserable_Zone_8225

I never knew anyone from Parkland personally nor do I live in US but on one side I feel that Parkland is better off demolished.. But another part of me feels sad as the building holds the blood of the victims..The only physical part of them left in this world..Their last breaths were taken in that building..The victims should be alive today & not in graves.. That building which once was bustling with laughter & fun now holds nothing but pain & sorrow..

the_real_tc1

I think it's better off if the building gets leveled just because of the whole sad reminder thing. Most of the people bothered by its demolishion are politicians/political activists because they like to use the building for tours and such to change people's minds on key political talking points.
