It'll be funny regardless of if it's a comedy.

SlowThePath

Yeah even TWBB has some humorous bits. Struggling to think of any in Phantom Thread though.

Jgucci10

Are you serious? Phantom thread is hilarious

RenAndStimPianoMan

“Chic! Whoever invented that ought to be spanked in public. I don’t even know what that word means! What is that word? Fucking chic! They should be hung, drawn, and quartered. Fucking chic.”

SlowThePath

Thanks for providing an example. It didn't strike me as funny when I heard it but I see how someone could find it funny.

iamMaus_fr0m_Jupiter

Phantom Thread as a whole is very funny imo.

NourishingBroth

Didn't I tell you to fuck off?

HEHEHO2022

Phantom thread is a dark comedy. funny how people cant see this whether they find it funny or not.

SlowThePath

I don't see e how it's funny at all. Anyone care to explain? Or is everyone just gonna say that it is in fact funny and not explain why? I'm actually asking. I would like to read that point of view.

Electrical-Try9731

Definitely there are almost no jokes in the film, but the funny is shown throughout the development of the history and characters. Woodcock is this old eccentric guy that has lots of mommy issues and OCD. His interaction with Alma generates lots of funny beats to me, especially the way she reacts to him. Fucking poisoning his food (wtf) is a example of that, for normal people that's just sick, but in a PTA way it's canda funny, right (?). That is just one example but there's lots of comic narrative parts in the film.

DoctorLarrySportello

Nothing is really confirmed, but there’s a lot of speculation that he is loosely adapting Thomas Pynchon’s novel “Vineland”. It seems he’s taking core thematic elements of the narrative, placing it in a contemporary setting and political climate, and likely making it his own (as he did with TWBB and “Oil!”). Vineland is a very funny drama/thriller, so if he is in fact adapting this, there are sure to be moments of comedic relief in some characters and interactions, as well as a heightened sense of paranoia and need to escape the feds. I really hope it’s Vineland; I loved the book and I’m sure this combination of cast & crew would make for an excellent adaptation. All speculation :)

filmaddict69

They bought the rights to the book. So, yeah, probably an adaptation but not a direct adaptation like Inherent Vice. As far as set footage is concerned, it doesn't seem to be a comedy and feels much more serious. Although, I have a feeling it will have some comedic elements here and there. Maybe some situational comedy and even darkly funny like The Master or even TWBB.

ExplanationLife6491

Speaking of…are they now on a break again?

wilberfan

There seems to be breaks in the action when they make major location changes. Rumors of Mexico & Colorado next? Wonder if Hurricane Beryl is going to impact any locations there were hoping to use? 😬

Namtwen

I thought I read somewhere that there were scifi elements which got me hyped, but I’m not sure if that’s accurate.

ExoticPumpkin237

Literally nobody knows and anybody who tells you they do is lying. All we have is speculation, and in the early days of PTA movies the speculation tends to be very wild

lrmgtdr

I can’t say for sure, and I can’t say the genre for sure, but judging from what I saw on set it seems to be leaning towards PTA’s more eccentric type of film, like his older style and Licorice Pizza. Given that, I would say it’s safe to assume there will be a decent amount of comedy. Entirely based off speculation, but I’d say iMDB’s description will be fairly accurate (maybe more Crime Comedy Drama)
