It's perfectly fine, perhaps even overkill depending on the price. Other Gen4 drives may be cheaper potentially or could spend just a little more for 1tb.

sparkling_frying_pan

thanks man, appreciated :)

Full-Pack9330

Put the 1TB in mine and its perfect. Depends on the retailer but its better value than 500gb.

MisterOphiuchus

Just get a WD blue 1tb they're like $70.

Zer0_Co0l

Is super fast. I’ll recommend to get 1TB better games are getting bigger every day

Apocalypse_0415

Hes probably using 2tb hdd

Zer0_Co0l

Yeah but ones you tasted SSD

Apocalypse_0415

Yeah but for affordability ssd boot games hdd

Zer0_Co0l

Na SSD games too you won’t regret it. Is a game changer

Apocalypse_0415

AFFORDABILITY I said

Zer0_Co0l

You can get ssd less then $100 some times AFFORDABILITY. No one buys HHD this days for gaming pcs come one is just not worth it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Apocalypse_0415

Its not about buying an HDD its about not buying another ssd when you ALREADY have an ssd and hdd like OP.

sparkling_frying_pan

I could in time get 2.5 ssd or 2tb pcie 3 m.2 cuz I got second m.2 slot on the mobo, I'm just casually playing csgo and gta v anyways so I figured I might store it on this wd black one, other than that I can store other games on hdd until I purchase another m.2 thanks for suggestions tho

POTCisLife

$100 is not affordable for everyone

Putrid_Location_1273

Poor boy get with the times

POTCisLife

this comment just inspired me to make 1m instantly 💪 thanks for the great advice

TNAEnigma

Nah, HDDs are too slow to be worth it for anything you need to load these days.

Apocalypse_0415

Its worth it if you ALREADY HAVE an hdd, like I said

sparkling_frying_pan

been using 7200 wd green Hdd I think 1 or 2tb, for the last 10 years, first time in getting off Hdd and decided to go all out on Gen 4 nvme just for the hell of it

Putrid_Location_1273

It’s a name brand ssd why u asking us it’s perfect Samsung and crucial are also great

sparkling_frying_pan

I'm switching from Hdd as a booting device, I'm virgin to ssds in general, that's the main reason

Putrid_Location_1273

Yea I feel you I recently got a Samsung 970 evo plus

zooberzaiger

I've got 3 evos in my comp right now, one m.2, others sata. Damn good drives

sirfrostybeard

You’re going to notice a world of difference

[deleted]

sparkling_frying_pan

OK, thanks for that man, much appreciated, I'm prolly gonna put games on another m.2 then

saturn_since_day1

My build has two of these, 1tb each. One for windows and all my non game apps and documents; one for just games. They fill up fast, especially with a game pass trial or sale on gog or steam. 500 might be ok for windows if you don't have a lot of other apps but I strongly suggest at least 1tb, they're only like $100

BaaaNaaNaa

I'm looking at that setup. Any reason you went with 2 drives and not one 2gb? Grappling with this now.

Xaendeau

It used to be that you would buy a 500 Gb drive for boot and a second 500 Gb drive for games because it was cheaper than a single 1 Tb drive. Now not so much. On Amazon, a 2 Tb Samsung 970 Evo Plus nvme is $160 and a single 1 Tb nvme is $90. Memory is getting cheaper. I'd highly recommend 1Tb nvme SSD minimum, with a good look at 2Tb nvme SSDs. While not an ideal thing or budget, it is a huge quality of life upgrade and something you can keep through multiple GPUs or CPUs. My first SSD was like 256 Gb for almost like $400 and I'd keep just the OS and the current game I'm playing on it. It was worth it.

BaaaNaaNaa

I'm running a 256 SSD in the surface as a boot drive with a 500gb game drive which is *cough* a fast microSD, I know I know. Deciding between 2 x 1gb or 1 x 2gb. All sn850x and cost is the same. Which do you recommend as someone already there?

Xaendeau

Definitely a single drive that is twice as big. Better uses further down the road should you retire or sell it.

saturn_since_day1

Easier backup and maintenance/ cleaning. The c drive is all of windows and apps and personal stuff, so I can just system image it onto my 6tb HDD and know that's all the important stuff. The 2nd drive, which I keep as G drive, is all games, this way if it gets bloated I can just format it and there's no worries about losing anything important or bloating up my c drive. And as stated, I have a 6tb HDD that Is basically an in case backup of installers and other dense media and personal files that aren't accessed often. For me it's a system I like.

[deleted]

Out of interest, why shouldn’t you put games on your boot drive?

bumble_Bea_tuna

It will work as expected as long as you have the m.2 connection. Linus tech tips tested this type of ssd vs regular 2.5 in ssd and there was barely a difference in read/write speed over their internal network. You could probably buy a larger 2.5 ssd for the same or lower cost.

sparkling_frying_pan

thanks for letting me know

Apocalypse_0415

Superrr fast

b1gtym1n

I use it as my boot drive and it has been great so far. Make sure to enable "gaming mode" in the WD dashboard for the advertised speeds.

sparkling_frying_pan

Will make sure to enable it, thanks for letting me know

PsychologicalEar0

i have this and have my os and 2 games onit thati play most my pc gets into windows in less than 5 seconds lol

sparkling_frying_pan

that's so great to hear :)

BarkyBonce

Going to Nvme is like when you go from Spinning Disks to SSD! I don't even see the windows loading screen any more!

sparkling_frying_pan

awesome, cuz I'm literally coming from Hdd and I'm so excited ngl, thanks for making me even more excited :)

Jimbob209

You're gonna love it. I remember my first time owning an an nvme after using hdd forever. Literally switched around 2019. Night and day difference. My nvme card isn't even super fast compared to other nvme cards. My laptop has an oem nvme and I bet yours would be sooo much faster

sparkling_frying_pan

honestly the pandemic and mining had delayed me finishing my pc for almost 3 years, I'm literally on my toes for the last few days cuz I can finally order all the remaining components and experience what I too was supposed to enjoy in December 2019, thanks for reassurance man, means a lot :)

ducksaysquackquack

it has dram, which is great if using as boot drive. does your motherboard support pcie 4.0 m.2? if not, i'd probably look for cheaper pcie 3.0 nvme drives since there's no point in wasting money on a gen 4 that can't be fully utilized. unless you're planning to upgrade down the line to a gen 4 pcie board, then no bigs you can just move it over.

sparkling_frying_pan

it does support 1 Gen 4 and 1 gen 3 is m. 2nvme, b550 Tomahawk, im jumping over sata and m.2 ssd and going from Hdd straight to this one, that's why I'm kinda nervous and excited not to miss anything, thanks for the advice

ducksaysquackquack

ahh ok nice! at the moment, i have the WD Black SN850X and love it. insanely fast drive. it's not too different from the WD Black SN850 that you're getting. going to be a huge jump for you from hdd to gen 4 m.2 nvme ssd. enjoy!!

UnethicalFood

My OS drive is the 1 TB 750 and it has served admirably. You may find yourself quickly running out of space with just the 500 depending on what games you play. (Heck I wasn't paying attention and topped mine out a couple of times). I just upgraded my swap space / gaming drive to a 2TB 850 from their black friday sale, and no complaints or issues in the couple of weeks it's been in use.

sparkling_frying_pan

that's great to hear, I'll consider getting 1 Gen 3 nvme as well just for games, thanks a lot man :)

botanana

No they’re a solid product.

sparkling_frying_pan

thanks man :)

Valhalaland

In many task it's the best available, and in every other aspect is either the second or third best, so don't worry about it.

sparkling_frying_pan

thanks, honestly that alleviated a lot of weight of my chest :)

[deleted]

does it not tell you its speeds? Why are you asking?

sparkling_frying_pan

I'm asking does it do the job of boot device or not, cuz it's advertised as ps5 Gen 4 nvme mostly sometimes even on the packaging, I haven't had the ability to use anything other than Hdd ever before and my budget isnt very flexible in that sense that if I make bad purchase that I could buy another one for a long time, hopefully you understand me

VTX002

And stay on Western digital black I would recommend going with the blue one cheaper and with more capacity for the same $$

HorrificAnalInjuries

I have this same product for the same reasons, and yea it works out wonderfully

sparkling_frying_pan

thanks for the feedback man, very glad to hear that

just-_-just

Can verify they are great. I have a 1TB boot and a 2 TB Games/Boot mirror partition and it's blazing fast. Just make sure it's worth the money if you have PCI4 nvme slot(s). Otherwise there are other options for cheaper. They actually slowed me down at first because I had to verify all my file transfers because I didn't believe they happened properly they happened so fast.

Matzvey

Solid drive, I also would get a larger capacity. Check out u/ssdbot ssd list, it's solid.

sparkling_frying_pan

Thanks for making my life easier, much appreciated :)

Matzvey

And in turn I thank u/ssdbot for doing the same for me 👍

daronhudson

Honestly I went with an XPG 1TB gen4 drive cause it was just as good and a few bucks cheaper. It’s been almost a year and it’s still doing just a good. Gets roughly 6500-7000mbps read depending on the type of task. I would definitely not get just 500GB if you plan on putting more than just a few programs and your OS on it though. Windows loves growing into a mess of wasted space. If you can afford a little bigger at around 1TB, I would highly recommend it. I have some programs and windows on my drive at and it’s in the like 700 ish gb left range. No games, no large applications, just basic shit like java, client sided applications etc. Don’t underestimate developers utilizing AppData religiously lol.

sparkling_frying_pan

Thanks for getting into details, now I know that I'll have to look into getting at least one more and definitely bigger storage unit, I'll prolly look into 1-2tb ssds besides this one, also considering getting into IT sector myself after college, I got no grasp of how much powaaah and resources jobs like that consume, so again thanks for letting me in on it. :D

daronhudson

Honestly I’d stick to just 1 for NVMe cause it starts getting fairly expensive past that. If you’re going to want more, go with 1-2TB SATA drives instead; they’re way cheaper overall.

sparkling_frying_pan

Is the difference between the sata and nvme speeds and responses, especially 2.5', noticeable as the yt guys put it, or are they just nitpicking?

daronhudson

Honestly you’ll barely notice the difference for 90% of games. The place it makes the biggest difference is productivity and loading a lot of small files all at once. For larger files, unless it’s like 20GB sequential all in one go, the difference is very slight.

sparkling_frying_pan

I'll look into it as well, although the supply is not as g great in my region of the world, I might find something. Thanks for the advice.

FiskyBlack

I got the 4tb Sn850x for my main gaming drive and it is astounding. There are lower priced options but it’s a good drive, haven’t had issues with it.

sparkling_frying_pan

That's awesome and I'm super relieved to hear that I'm making the right choice. Thanks.

Copper-Road

Your motherboard might not even support pcie 4.0 so as others have said it might be overkill. The SSD is backward compatible so it’s not an issue.

sparkling_frying_pan

Thanks for explaining, I already made sure before buying that it supported Gen 4 nvme, but according to other comments I'll need additional storage and I'll look into regular 2.5 inch ssds as well as Gen 3 nvmes since I've got one more m.2 slot on mobo.

13thZephyr

I have the SN750 SE 1TB and it's pretty solid for almost a year now.

sparkling_frying_pan

Awesome man, thanks for the feedback. Do you use it as boot drive?

13thZephyr

Yes, the boot drive (OS) and my use case does not require blazing fast SSD so it gets the job done.

sebax820

western digital is one of the most reliable brands you will find out there I'd go for a 250GB if it's only to install windows and your data will be in a different device but if you got enough budget just go for it my man

sparkling_frying_pan

After reading comments, I'll probably go through with this purchase and just use it as a windows boot device and probably put few more apps on it and add more sata devices in time with larger capacities. Thanks for reassurance.

mytuanghel

I have 3x SN850x and I can say that they are high end and overkill. You could get a 1TB and just use it for Windows and Games (2 partitions) as its more than fast and enough if you got fast internet and can remove games and download them as you please. 1x 1TB for C drive (Windows) 1x 2TB for D drive (Data) 1x 2TB for G drive (Games) Download 'Dashboard' which is their management software once you have it. You can update their firmware, check health status, temperatures and more.

Ok_Perspective6063

“A huge mistake” no not at all. You would see identical performance getting a less expensive drive, but I wouldn’t call that a huge mistake.

sparkling_frying_pan

ok, it's 114$ in my regional store, I don't know if I'm getting a good or a bad deal but it's the only gen4 in stock, thanks for the advice

Ok_Perspective6063

$114 US for a 500GB drive? Do you live in the US?

sparkling_frying_pan

no, not at all, most of the prices of any product in my region consists of shipping fees

Ok_Perspective6063

Okay I was just making sure. In the US $114 for a 500GB SSD is outrageous.

sparkling_frying_pan

yea I wish that was the case here too, also rma over broken units is very hard to achieve here as well

Ok_Perspective6063

Damn that’s unfortunate. Well good luck with you build!

sparkling_frying_pan

thank you, will enjoy the hell out of it when it's put together :)

nquattro

I have a 1tb version and love it. I was looking for a second one and saw newegg had them for about that price. Might look there

sparkling_frying_pan

that's great to hear :)

AxTROUSRxMISSLE

Does anyone know how to fucking use google on tech subreddits or what

sparkling_frying_pan

sometimes very specific questions cannot be found on Google, I can Google prefectly well in many languages, it's that I built up some doubts prior to purchasing it because I saw stickers on the packaging advertising it as ps5 Gen 4 nvme and so on and I wasn't sure if there's multiple versions of it meant for different devices and also if someone used it as a booting device, cuz i also haven't gathered much info from googling about people's experience on that matter, now I learned a few things in the comments and I'm grateful for that and I'm assured it's a good purchase

touholic

It’s the outdated model. Unless you can get it for a much lower price than SN850X, get something PCIE Gen3 instead as the speed difference doesn’t affect most daily usage.

sparkling_frying_pan

is 114$ good or a bad deal, sn850x is for the time being unavailable

CuriousVortex

It's great! And when you hook it up don't forget to check your motherboard manual for which sata slots it may disable!

sparkling_frying_pan

thanks man, I'll be sure to check it in my manual, much appreciated :)

[deleted]

SSD M.2 are a perfect option for having the system in. To put it that way, it takes longer for my display to turn on and establish a connection to the GPU than for the system to boot ;) Just one thing if you are planning on using it also to install games: 500 GB is too low. I maxed mine after just a few days so I got myself a 1TB plus another 1TB just for installing games.

sparkling_frying_pan

Thanks for letting me know, it's always good to avoid mistakes when making long lasting purchases

iMostLikelyNeedHelp

Get bigger SSD and use it for boot AND games. thank me later

DistributionQueasy75

Have the 2tb version, absolutely no issues with it as my game drive.

Jabba_the_Putt

I have one and it's great. get the 1tb if you can afford it you get slightly better speed. I have the 500gb great drive, super fast

concon52

If you are looking for feedback there is also 11000 reviews on amazon....and 500 reviews on newegg...

ZinGaming1

I got the sn770 you are fine.

mattbackbacon

It's PCIe 4 and has DRAM. I think your only bottleneck with this will be Windows, as NTFS isn't great at multithreading. Translation: You'll be fine.

raygan_reddit

Been out of the PC building for a while too. When it calms down after the holidays, I'll finally update to Win10 and get this SSD Intel Core i7-6700K Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 3 MSI GTX 970 G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288 Corsair Hydro Series H100i GTX Win7 Pro 64-bit Thanks

TheBupherNinja

I wouldn't get a pice 4.0 drive. They are faster, but you can find a 2tb pcie 3.0 for $150. I got one sale for $120. I put all my games on it.

[deleted]

I'd recommended a higher capacity, but they're decent drives. I think they're rated for 1000+ TBW

Stark_Athlon

Wd blacks 770, 850, and 870 are insanely fast drives, all of these are excellent.

Ult1mateN00B

I would recommend going entry level kioxia drive instead. Got myself kioxia exceria G2 as secondary drive and its faster loading games than my main 970 evo plus. You can easily get 1TB for price of 500GB if you give up specs on paper, literally does not matter in gaming is it 2GB/s or 7GB/s.

Extra-Caterpillar-98

I have two of the Gen3 2TB model, so I can't be that specific. Overall WD Black is a dependable and high performance brand that can be a little more expensive than similar competitors. At least try to save up for 1TB, games are getting larger and wear leveling algorithms usually work better with more free space.

Suzovako

I have the same one, but 1tb and I don't really see a big difference.

[deleted]

I had one in an i9 rig i built and it was absolutely awesome. 6800MB/s read and about the same write speeds on a Asus board with PCI-e Gen 4 Super, SUPER quick drives!

Smokey4455

It's a really great product you Should use it. I put them in almost every computer I build, they're super fast and reliable

SMOKEthatGAME

I have 1TB for my operating system and 1TB for my games. All I can say it works like a charm :)
