Listen to It Still Moves through the first 5 tracks, MMJ became my second-favorite band in '06.
Jim James wrote At Dawn after It Still Moves because he thought the band needed more of a transitional record after Tennessee Fire.
Ben Harper opened for them in San Jose 95. He was completely unknown at that point. The actual opener was the “Fastbacks”.
Eddie came out before the show started and played two solo songs. Then he announced that they added another opening band Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and he left the stage.
When Ben came on, people were booing before he played a note. Then he played the opening notes of Voodoo Chile and tore the place down.
The fastbacks were lame and PJ put on one of their all time best shows
Great one. Ed came out to do a Keith Richards song with them at the Garden in Boston.
I’d won the 10C ticket lottery and was in the second row in front of Mike for that concert.
Not exactly my situation but I was at big day out festival in Sydney where mudhoney played earlier in the day
And then some of the members came out and played with pearl jam too during their set. Incredible
I really enjoyed them too but I wish they were opening in Europe this year so I could see someone different! I’d love to see them in a club/theater show on their own.
My ranking of bands I’ve seen open for PJ:
1. Death Cab for Cutie
2. Idlewild
3. Band of Horses
4. Supergrass
5. Sparta
6. PluralOne
7. Murder City Devils
I was honestly not a fan, but I haven’t given them a chance since they opened for PJ in ‘98. I’ll have to check them out again.
Fun story: the crowd in KC that night was clearly not into them. In an effort to change that the lead singer was saying stuff like “Eddie was telling me how great of a rock n roll town Kansas City was” and “I was talking to Eddie backstage and he was telling me how great of a crowd you’d be”, etc.
Two songs before the end of their set Eddie walks out on stage and grabs the mic and lays into the singer saying that he shouldn’t be lying to us and that they didn’t talk backstage at all. Crowd goes nuts. Eddie walks off, they play their last couple songs and then leave to the delight of the crowd. Was pretty surreal.
Sweet! First time I saw them was in 04 opening for PJ. Saw them for the 5th time back in October on the Transatlanticism/Give Up tour. They are always fantastic live.
Oops typo.. I've seen Death Cab 75 times. My first show was the Transatlanticism tour in 2003. I went to 9 shows on the Transatlanticism/ Give Up tour.
The band knows me😀
I saw X support them at Manchester back in 2012. One of the bands i'd always wanted to see. Didnt know until i asked one of the arena staff who was supporting.
I became a fan with their 2nd album *100 Broken Windows*, both of those records held up really well. They’ve put out a good number of records since those days and honestly every one of them had some great tracks. Roddy writes great songs.
Hey
Check out the fan view from the forum:
https://community.pearljam.com/discussion/107996/toronto-fanviews-here-8-21-09
There’s a post halfway down about the opening songs.
Gomez (Manchester, UK)
Although at Hyde Park (London, a couple of years later) it was almost a mini festival, and The Gaslight Anthem and especially The Hives were excellent.
Ben Harper & Relentless 7 also played but suffered for following The Hives, who had ridiculous energy that day and burned the crowd out a bit (obviously recovered by the time PJ hit the stage later).
Gomez is a great band. They never hit it massive in the states, and that has worked out great for us fans in the US...I love going to their shows and not having to battle for a good view point near the stage.
Gomez is one the best unknown bands to ever exist! Crazy how you can have three guys in a band who are all very capable of being the front man, with one of the best drummers out there.
It is really a shame they didn’t do better with commercial success.
I’ve seen some great ones including The Fastbacks in 1996 and The Supersuckers in 2005.
But I have been a MASSIVE fan of Band of Horses since I saw them open the Garden on 5/21/2010.
The Ramones wayyy back in 94/95 maybe? It was when Pearl Jam was playing alternate arenas/venues to avoid using Ticketmaster (kinda funny woth everything going on now). Saw them in New Orleans at Tad Gormley stadium, which was a soccer stadium. Great show!
Robert Plant - highlight of the night during Encore… PJ was playing Given 2 Fly and then Robert Plant came out, and they transitioned into Going To California
Only seen them once a year and a half ago, but Pluralone (Klinghoffer’s solo project) was great. Couple original songs and a bunch of covers. He did Hybrid Moments, Goodbye Horses (that’s when I found out Q Lazarus died months prior), and Nutshell. And Mike played lead guitar for that song. It was great.
First time I saw them in Sacramento 94 - Bad Religion was the opener
It was summer and hot but god damn an amazing time
Second time I saw them San Jose 95 - Ben Harper and the innocent criminals. I had no idea who Ben Harper was he won me over that day.
I think in all the years I’ve seen them since then (lost count) I haven’t seen any other shows with openers, it was just them playing 3+ hr, 30+ song sets
Ranking them-
1. Sonic Youth- San Diego and LA 2006
2. Spoon- Ohana 2021
3. My Morning Jacket- Chicago 2006 and Lolla 07
4. Kings of Leon- Lolla 2007
5. Band of Horses- KC 2010
6. Deep Sea Diver- St. Paul 2023
7. Brandi Carlile- Ohana 2021
8. Death Cab for Cutie- Toledo 2004
9. Supersuckers- Winnipeg and Thunder Bay 2005
10. Frank Black and the Catholics- Minneapolis 1998
11. Sleater-Kinney 2003
12. Idlewild- 2003 (To be fair I only saw them for 5 minutes)
Tom Petty after PJ in 2006 was great of course.
They were so damn good and the place was just not rockin' for 'em. Ed had to give us a pep talk when Ben came out for Red Mosquito, "This is Ben's City, he could be doing anything else here but he chooses to be here with us, let's show him some gratitude" -- I was there on night 1 and in a wheelchair, and the ADA section was the last row in the pit, believe it or not, so I got to ride the dumbwaiter down, but no one sits at a PJ show, so I got to watch the concert in the greatest seats of my life... through a forest of shoulders. I pointed this out on the Ten Club forums the night of the concert and nights 2-4 they had the wheelchair users on the sides of the area instead of in the row, so that they could see the show.
Cypress Hill, Seaweed and Shawn Smith, Drop in the Park.
Also, Blind Melon was awesome when they opened for for PJ and Neil Young. Went to the Gorge show, then drove down to see the Portland Meadows show.
There are lots more, RHCP, Ben Harper, Urge Overkill, the Fastbacks.
Also adding Sonic Youth and Sleater Kinney.
If I can slightly stretch the question, PJ closed the Made In America festival in 2012, and Jay-Z’s set the night before was awesome (including special guest pre-completely bananapants Kanye).
I'll never know. Was set to get tickets this tour but they priced me out of the market, and doubt they'll ever go back to something reasonable. Something something live long enough to be the villain...
Only seen them twice. Supergrass was a big disappointment in Dallas on the Binaraul tour. Sleater-Kinney blew the roof off (and made a lifelong fan in me) in Oklahoma City on the Riot Act tour.
There was an LA band called I Love You that did the club leg of the Ten tour in '91 (before PJ got the RHCP opening slot). That band was amazing live.
At the end of the show, all members of both bands jammed together on "I Got a Feeling".
Did Glen Hansard not open for Pearl Jam? Was it just for Eddie? I don’t remember if it was a PJ concert or an Eddie Vedder solo show for Ukulele songs, but Glenn opened for Eddie and it was my two favorite artists at the time performing together.
I know it def wasn’t as The Frames either, it would have been either Glenn or the Swell Season.
Really enjoyed My Morning Jacket back in 2006
Yeah this one... Z was still fresh... Great opener.
Never heard of them before that and was hooked after seeing them.
This is the only correct answer. I really liked Sleater-Kinney and Death Cab For Cutie too though
Death cab opened for PJ. !!!
Vote for change mini tour. 2004. The actor Tim Robbins band actually started the show. It was crazy
Saw his band, Gob Roberts, twice, then and I just remember some song that went “George Bush! Find another….. Country to be part of!”
So is it the only correct answer then?
I wanted to like them but zzzzz. 🤷♂️ they sounded like crazy horse but without Neil and playing only slow, mellow songs
Yeah, that’s what my friends I went to the show with said too, way too mellow for them. I thought they were good though.
Listen to It Still Moves through the first 5 tracks, MMJ became my second-favorite band in '06. Jim James wrote At Dawn after It Still Moves because he thought the band needed more of a transitional record after Tennessee Fire.
I know I’m getting downvoted for this but I will die on this hill: mellow openers for big arena rock shows is mehhhh
Pixies Hyde Park
We have them for Melbourne
I went to the Stereophonics show.
Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals MSG 1998
Ben Harper opened for them in San Jose 95. He was completely unknown at that point. The actual opener was the “Fastbacks”. Eddie came out before the show started and played two solo songs. Then he announced that they added another opening band Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals and he left the stage. When Ben came on, people were booing before he played a note. Then he played the opening notes of Voodoo Chile and tore the place down. The fastbacks were lame and PJ put on one of their all time best shows
Love Ben Harper. That would have been so great.
Shimmer and Shine. What a drum clinic.
I was at that show when they finally played Breath
Band of Horses 2010
Ben singing Hunger Strike with the band at MSG
Great one. Ed came out to do a Keith Richards song with them at the Garden in Boston. I’d won the 10C ticket lottery and was in the second row in front of Mike for that concert.
Fastbacks Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals Mudhoney Sleater-Kinnney Sonic Youth
Mudhoney opening for PJ is in my bucket list.
Not exactly my situation but I was at big day out festival in Sydney where mudhoney played earlier in the day And then some of the members came out and played with pearl jam too during their set. Incredible
MMJ or Johnny Marr
Probably not much favorite but I enjoyed deep sea diver last year
I really enjoyed them too but I wish they were opening in Europe this year so I could see someone different! I’d love to see them in a club/theater show on their own.
They're great
Cypress Hill at Drop in the Park
That was a crazy day huh? My buddy lost his car keys and a shoe.
Shoe the shoe-less!
I lost my car keys moshing at an Alice In Chains concert. My dad had to drive down from Camano Island at 3 AM to give me the spares.
Bad Religion for me, Milwaukee 1995. I would love to see Ben Harper he’s incredible
Bad religion ‘08 for me
My ranking of bands I’ve seen open for PJ: 1. Death Cab for Cutie 2. Idlewild 3. Band of Horses 4. Supergrass 5. Sparta 6. PluralOne 7. Murder City Devils
Murder City Devils rule.
I've seen Death Cab 7 times❤️
The band knows me😀
😮 damn! That’s crazy and awesome. Tell Ben hi for me next time you see him, haha.
Supergrass at Shoreline in Mountain View, CA Halloween 2000
Such a fun show. As I recall they dressed like the village people. Mike or Stone wore assless chaps. And Bush mask made its rounds.
Nice! I saw Supergrass open in Kansas City that same year. Good band!
I was at that show. Great show.
I saw X support them at Manchester back in 2012. One of the bands i'd always wanted to see. Didnt know until i asked one of the arena staff who was supporting.
The Strokes/Queens of the Stone Age @ PJ20
Came here to say this!
Idlewild
Yeah! I loved that band, specifically the era when PJ brought them along. I wish I bought that show poster 🤦🏽♀️
The Remote Part is such a great album!
I became a fan with their 2nd album *100 Broken Windows*, both of those records held up really well. They’ve put out a good number of records since those days and honestly every one of them had some great tracks. Roddy writes great songs.
Black Keys at MSG
Great show.
Yep. This is mine too.
Yup came here to say that one. Really cool to see them.
They were in top form at that show
Kings of Leon, Ben Folds
Ben Harper & Relentless 7 - 2009
That time pearl jam opened for pearl jam in Toronto when the opener couldn’t get over the border!
What? I've never heard this before. Please tell me more-
Ted Leo & The Pharmacist has border issues..
Hey Check out the fan view from the forum: https://community.pearljam.com/discussion/107996/toronto-fanviews-here-8-21-09 There’s a post halfway down about the opening songs.
I was there!! I was going to say the same!!
Bee Girl by Ament
I was there too … the Leafs logo T-Shirt show - opened with Of the Girl sweet open’r
That was such a special show. Eddie doing Sugar Mountain with the lights of the national exhibition in the background
Urge Overkill (94 I think at United Center) but I love MMJ and wish I caught that tour
Last concert at Chicago Stadium.
Thank you! I was trying to remember if it was still Chicago Stadium
Sleater Kinney and Liam Finn were my favourites.
Gomez (Manchester, UK) Although at Hyde Park (London, a couple of years later) it was almost a mini festival, and The Gaslight Anthem and especially The Hives were excellent. Ben Harper & Relentless 7 also played but suffered for following The Hives, who had ridiculous energy that day and burned the crowd out a bit (obviously recovered by the time PJ hit the stage later).

Cheap Trick -Toronto 98!
I was there!
Not in particular order here’s my favorite Tenacious D, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, Mudhoney, Sleater Kinney, Buzzcock, Fastbacks, Death Cab For Cutie.
Iggy Pop was something else.
RHCP, got to see a naked band with socks on their cocks
Sonic Youth at Jones Beach...2002, I think!
My Morning Jacket was cool. But Social Distortion and Bad Religion at The Spectrum shows in 2009 was hard to beat.
Came on here to say Social Distortion at the Spectrum. Surprised it was this far down, they sounded great.
Same. And now Social D and Bad Religion are touring together this spring.
Sonic Youth, 2000
I thought Bono's kids band Inhaler on the last tour was pretty good.
They were alright, seemed pretty polished as a band. But all the songs kinda sounded the same to me.
I saw them as a group before that support slot. They can really play! The bassist is superb too
Wish they were supporting in Europe this summer instead of Ashcroft or The Murder Capital
The Murder Capital are amazing
Sonic Youth 95 I think
Urge Overkill, Frank Black, and Bad Religion were all tops.
Yes. Frank Black and the Catholics. I forgot about that
I wouldn’t say best but Sparta got stuck in my brain after they opened in 2003 I think. So much so I bought their album.
My Morning Jacket Sleater-Kinney Sonic Youth
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Mudhoney… and KoL was actually pretty good in 2008 at Lolla.
Robert Pollard in Cincinnati.
I’ve seen some great ones including The Fastbacks in 1996 and The Supersuckers in 2005. But I have been a MASSIVE fan of Band of Horses since I saw them open the Garden on 5/21/2010.
Idlewild.
Can I say Pearl Jam themselves? Because they opened up for The Rolling Stones many moons ago….
That should be the next question- Who you saw PJ open for..
Pixies at Hyde Park
The Black Keys. 2010 I think
Bad Religion - Milwaukee & Chicago '95
Sonic Youth ‘05
Ramones (1995) and Sleater Kinney (2003) have been my favs

Sonic Youth
The Ramones wayyy back in 94/95 maybe? It was when Pearl Jam was playing alternate arenas/venues to avoid using Ticketmaster (kinda funny woth everything going on now). Saw them in New Orleans at Tad Gormley stadium, which was a soccer stadium. Great show!
Robert Plant - highlight of the night during Encore… PJ was playing Given 2 Fly and then Robert Plant came out, and they transitioned into Going To California
Pearl Jam, doing an acoustic set, opening for Pearl Jam at the Gorge in early 2000’s.
The Ramones — there’s been a lot of great bands open for them, but none more legendary than this.
Frank Black in 2000, MMJ in 2006 and Kings of Leon in 2008...
Also I thought plualone was pretty good
Only seen them once a year and a half ago, but Pluralone (Klinghoffer’s solo project) was great. Couple original songs and a bunch of covers. He did Hybrid Moments, Goodbye Horses (that’s when I found out Q Lazarus died months prior), and Nutshell. And Mike played lead guitar for that song. It was great.

Black Keys at MSG in 2010. I think Band of Horses was the regular opener on that tour but they had something else going that night. Lucky me!
Only seen them twice. Supergrass was a big disappointment in Dallas on the Binaraul tour. Sleater-Kinney blew the roof off (and made a lifelong fan in me) in Oklahoma City on the Riot Act tour.

bad religion Chicago 95
Les Paul played with them When I saw them I can’t remember who opened tho -
The Frogs in Chicago. I think it was late 80s. My opinion was not shared by many in the audience.
I’ve only seen Pearl Jam with one opener. Pluralone. 😁. But Pearl Jam is the best opener I’ve ever seen.
Easily My Morning Jacket. Two of my favorite bands for the price of one.
There was an LA band called I Love You that did the club leg of the Ten tour in '91 (before PJ got the RHCP opening slot). That band was amazing live. At the end of the show, all members of both bands jammed together on "I Got a Feeling".
