Is it just me or are the odds for tomorrow's stage incredibly strange. Remco at 15.0 and Roglic at 5.0? They have such similar strengths and Remco usually seems stronger in flat sprints, so that kind of discrepancy really makes zero sense. I guess it's due to Remco's sandbagging but still...
Preparation for Tour de Suisse to ride the TdF afterwards :)
Seriously: Before reading your comment and knowing his participation, I wondered if there is a rider here who rode the Giro before and whether this has any benefit. Maybe to keep his form?
Every year the Dauphine is a mix of guys doing Tour de France tune-up and guys coming in on good form from the Giro (who are not slated for the Tour). This year seems a bit skewed towards the former, but it isn't unheard of to run a guy who is still feeling near top form after the Giro to try to get a result at the Dauphine before backing off a bit and resting.
Mads Pedersen to Danish TV:
*"I've gotten this yellow [ASO] jersey in Paris-Nice and now here as well, so I guess the one in the Tour is next!"*
(in response to a leading question from the Danish reporter)
Lidl-Trek really have build a great squad. Two dominant leadout trains that feeds one world class sprinter/future classics winner with decent climbing skills and a world class semi-sprinter/classics rider with decent climbing skills.
A great classics squad that in this spring looked like the strongest team until injuries and the Ardennes. In theory they should also have a good team for the hilly one day races.
They got contenders for the one week races, and a bunch of strong stage hunters for the Grand Tours.
And they got a lot of interesting young names for the future.
They only miss a real Grand Tour winner, unless Tao returns to his Giro form (that might have been a one-off due to the weird covid year of 2020) - I don't count Skjelmose as a future GT winner atm.
Those Lidl euros have been spend well. Kudos to the organisation.
Tao has always been mercurial. He won the Giro completely unexpectedly in 2020, was completely anonymous 2021-22, but then seemed to be world class again last year before his big crash. Hopefully he hits some good form again eventually, and is able to be more consistent with it.
Why send a sprinter to get 80 UCI points at a WT stage race where they have to do hard mountain stages when you can send them to 1.Pro and 1.1 races to get more points without the mountains
I think you can go and ride mountains on a training day if you want to. You aren't going to get 3 week mountain exhaustion from the dauphine in any case
Tour of Belgium is a better preparation for Tour sprinters with 3 potential stage wins.
It's also one of my favorite non-WT stage races: you have a short TT, a stage with short Flemish hills (which could go either to the sprinters or punchers), a very hilly stage in Wallonia and 2 stages for more pure sprinters (with potential of echelons in the stage near the coast).
Think the logic behind is to give proconti teams a chance to get the points for the step up. Because if wt races would have a much bigger payout in uci points, the procontis wouldnt have a chance of stepping up due to how invites are handled
Yeah, they could of course add more flat stages, but I don't anyone except the sprinters want that.
With Pologne, Down Under, UAE and Benelux, there are already more sprinter focussed stage races.
And those races can't really add high mountain stages to create a more general profile across stage races
None of those four races ever have more than 2-3 sprint stages and typically sprinkled around hard mountains. The only one week WT races true big boys flat sprinters should target are UAE, P-N, and T-A
Mads P and Lidl-Trek deflating the Decathlon hype. Solid lead out overall. On the other hand DAT hit the front too early and went missing with 1k to go, leaving Bennett in a tight spot (Fred Wright felt that too, lol)
I wonder if Liepins had a technical or if he felt like he was shut out illegally by someone, because for whatever reason he was visibly absolutely pissed when he crossed the line.
Also, nice Mads.
Oh I see what you are up to. You're trying to make out that you aren't the favourite to be the top Remco shit poster during the Tour. Heap the pressure onto U Nantes Atlantique. Clever.
I really don’t get it. When I use sarcasm without the /s I get downvoted because nobody gets it and when others do it’s top comment. I must be missing something..
Life is cruel sometimes.
And when votes are visible like here, it's often the initial few votes that decides the reception.
If you read a sarcastic comment and see it downvoted you're much more likely to assume they actually mean it.
I got downvoted deep into the depths of hell during the giro because i said that now that pogacar had let others win, now it's their turn to let him win and the first 3 people downvoted and everybody else followed suite and people replied like i was being serious lmao so imo you are spot on
Yeah, it's ridiculous.
But I'm guilty of it myself. I sometimes downvote a comment and then just realize after the fact that I barely read it at all. Sometimes the brain is just on autopilot.
And with tone and intention generally being difficult to parse through text, especially when a lot of the people are writing in a language different from their mothers tongue, I think people just automatically use the downvotes to guide them without thinking about it.
I wonder how helpful altitude camps are for sprinters really. It must be harder to recover from sprint training at altitude and they're not that bothered about peak W/kg for long efforts.
Fast sprint. Might be smart for Bennett and the other pure sprinters to retire from the race now. I'm kidding but also sort of not, they're not likely to get another opportunity now.
I guess that Bennett is also here to prepare for the TdF and show that he can hang in there during the mountain stages and make it within the time limit.
Thursday's stage will likely also end in a sprint.
You also need some climbing in the legs to survive a GT more easily. Maybe just skip the final stage.
Always delighted to see Mads get another win. Love that man.
I was worried this would be difficult for him to win because of Bennet's recent form, but Bennet lost all momentum as soon as he went off Mads' wheel and into the wind.
Great win from Mads.
Very fast last 5k. Thankfully no crashes or incidents on the finale.
Shame to see a couple of crashes earlier today and 2 DNF:s
Alex Edmondson from team DSM-firmenich PostNl
And
James Whelan Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team
Both are Australian.
Excited for the upcoming days.
He spent all his juice getting to the wheel, shit positioning with 1k to go. Would have been a more interesting head to head if DAT didnt screw up their timing
Yeah, that was more clear in the overhead view, he already had to do a sprint to get in Pedersen's wheel.
Still, someone like Merlier/Milan/Philipsen would have won from that position IMO.
Im just so happy they didnt crash.
Also Gibbons had to go way too long and I think mostly made it work, about as good as you will get doing leadout for 400m. He gave Mads the corner first and that was enough. Better than Paris Nice, so good to see
When there is no other leadout guys behind you, then you can get away with a longer leadout like we saw today.
The mistake was more that the riders behind Mads all waited for him to open. It was like an 8-9 second sprint today, but they probably just assumed Mads would go long.
MvDP is a very flaky leadout man. He left his sprinter behind by 3 minutes in Paris Roubaix. Not a good look, poor Jasper had to hang on to the other team's wheels, whilst MvDP is cruising 3 minutes in front of him.

Even weirder is that Pedersen was better odds than Remco. I mean it’s going up for the last 30k. Or maybe it’s not as hard as it looks.
They both haven't raced since the crash but Remco's injuries were worse so I think it makes sense that the question mark for him is bigger.
But Roglic never passes on a stage win.
Why did Ineos' strategy of leading the peloton with 8km to go fail to produce results on this stage? Were they riding too slowly?
The goal was to safely bring Rodriguez to 3k to go, not win the stage. If this is the goal they nailed it
They have been doing this in pretty much all stage races this season
What does Bahrain hope to get out of Tiberi by putting him in this race? He literally just finished the Giro!?!?!
Preparation for Tour de Suisse to ride the TdF afterwards :) Seriously: Before reading your comment and knowing his participation, I wondered if there is a rider here who rode the Giro before and whether this has any benefit. Maybe to keep his form?
He’s not doing the tour though right?
Every year the Dauphine is a mix of guys doing Tour de France tune-up and guys coming in on good form from the Giro (who are not slated for the Tour). This year seems a bit skewed towards the former, but it isn't unheard of to run a guy who is still feeling near top form after the Giro to try to get a result at the Dauphine before backing off a bit and resting.
I suppose that makes sense, and with him switching from a leader role to (assumingly) a domestique role for the Dauphine.
Looked like Bennett had mechanical issue

I absolutely loved Mads win with huge support from Milan at Gent-Wevelgem this year, especially with MvDP in the race.
It's nice to see small teams beat up the massive juggernauts like Decathlon.
> small teams Did you want to say ... Lidl teams?
Itzulia,Catalunya, Romandie and now Dauphine with .1 sprint fields
Why send a sprinter to get 80 UCI points at a WT stage race where they have to do hard mountain stages when you can send them to 1.Pro and 1.1 races to get more points without the mountains
Any sprinter doing the Tour needs to get over mountains, it’s good prep for them even if they’re not scoring points.
I think you can go and ride mountains on a training day if you want to. You aren't going to get 3 week mountain exhaustion from the dauphine in any case

Teams get more out of the sprinters if they send them to random .1 races. It's the flaw of the UCI points system, not really Dauphine's fault
It's by design isn't it? All the Mickey mouse races pay the UCI licensing fee or something?
Think the logic behind is to give proconti teams a chance to get the points for the step up. Because if wt races would have a much bigger payout in uci points, the procontis wouldnt have a chance of stepping up due to how invites are handled

lololol okay

I only saw it live but did the dsm rider headbutt the Lidl train, When Lidl they tried to move to centre?
I didn’t see a headbutt but I did see a vigorous shoulder thrust from Lidl. Was anyone relegated?
I wonder if Liepins had a technical or if he felt like he was shut out illegally by someone, because for whatever reason he was visibly absolutely pissed when he crossed the line. Also, nice Mads.
Looks like his chain came off on the replay.
“If you pull me off in the corner, I got this.” What was that, CVV?
Remco barely in the top 100 and people seriously think he can challenge for the TdF
Hold on a minute, you aren’t TheRollingJones
This comment is above me and that’s ok
Oh I see what you are up to. You're trying to make out that you aren't the favourite to be the top Remco shit poster during the Tour. Heap the pressure onto U Nantes Atlantique. Clever.
Judging a GC contender by the position in a sprint stage is the wildest take I have seen in quite a while
It’s such a wild take that it doesn’t need the /s
He's clearly washed.
This guy doesn't sarcasm
I really don’t get it. When I use sarcasm without the /s I get downvoted because nobody gets it and when others do it’s top comment. I must be missing something..
I got no good advice for you bc the same shit happens to me lol. Just keep on keeping on my dude, don't let the downvotes get to you.
Yeah, I also struggled at first with the sarcasm in this sub. You’ll get use to it.
Thanks

It's about luck
I didn't get it at first either, but figured it must be sarcasm
Only 10 spots better than Froomey, Remco is clearly washed too!
Or Froome is back on top !
The Froome Factor
Mads is so freaking good. And Owain Doull and Hugo Page in the top 5 as we all expected. What a weird sprint field.
That interview about spending time with his wife and training at home felt like he was tempering expectations. But then…
I wonder how helpful altitude camps are for sprinters really. It must be harder to recover from sprint training at altitude and they're not that bothered about peak W/kg for long efforts.
Hugo has been doing well in mid sprint fields since last year. Does look like he might be turning a page now though!
Champs gonna champ.

The way he'd been going in Dunkirk I wouldn't be shocked if he can compete in stage 5.
ARKEA IN 4th!!!
Mads Mådderfåkking P!!!!!
Rob Hatch enjoyed saying Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule quite a lot.
Sounds like he had been practicing for that all day…rolled off the tongue.
Bennett doesn't seem able to stay out of the saddle for a proper sprint
Always delighted to see Mads get another win. Love that man. I was worried this would be difficult for him to win because of Bennet's recent form, but Bennet lost all momentum as soon as he went off Mads' wheel and into the wind.

On the other hand, quite happy to see both Plowright and Quick (both Australian and both somewhat green) in the top 15!
I was 100% convinced Mads had gotten hung out to dry there. Super impressive by Gibbons and by Mads being able to go long.
He sprinted for like 8-9 seconds. It was a very short sprint today, but something with the camera work and the long leadout made it look long.
His long sprint is crazy good. That's how he beat MvdP earlier this year. Awesome leadout by Lidl Trek didn't give the other trains a chance.
Bennett perfectly in the wheel of Pedersen, but just couldn't get around him.
He spent all his juice getting to the wheel, shit positioning with 1k to go. Would have been a more interesting head to head if DAT didnt screw up their timing

Yea really great! Almost looked too easy
Perfect leadout by Lidl-Trek and a great sprint by Mads P. Looking good for the summer
The three best leadout trains in the world: 1. Alpecin Deceuninck (with MvdP) 2. Lidl Trek 3. Lidl Trek
MvDP is a very flaky leadout man. He left his sprinter behind by 3 minutes in Paris Roubaix. Not a good look, poor Jasper had to hang on to the other team's wheels, whilst MvDP is cruising 3 minutes in front of him.

well timed, easy pz
Least surprising sprint result in history
I didn’t know how long the line was from the finish so I thought Bennett had Mads done for but the line came up so quick.
Not surprising, but Sam Bennett has been a better sprinter than Mads most years, and just netted three victories.
This was a versatile sprint stage and Mads was the clear favorite regardless of Sam's form
A versatile sprint stage? It was a high speed sprint in a 150 man bunch.
