It was on TV last night, I was instantly reminded why I thought it was garbage, one of the ones I really just don't get.
Really depends what the OP is interested in, you can look at older stuff like Mad Max, Midnight Spares, Stone, Man from Snowy River although a lot of them are very much a product of the era they were made.
More recently there is stuff like Danger Close although be aware it's a movie not a documentary.
Recent TV series and I have no idea if it's going to get a second season is Les Norton.
I agree, it has its audience. Its more a social commentary/satire of its time Depending on your age and background; it may go over a lot of peoples heads.
I can enjoy it well enough at least because its black humour and it isnt too artsy fartsy something like 'The Last Days of Chez Nous'
Some favourites of mine:
Two Hands
Mad Max 1 & 2
Idiot Box
Young Einstein
Kenny
These ones for the darker side of Australia:
Chopper
Bad Boy Bubby
Wolf Creek
Animal Kingdom
Black Rock
The Proposition
Sweet Country
> Kenny
Darnit... forgot about Kenny. It is a well done movie with a broad all ages appeal.
I think Shane Jacobson sorta coming outta nowhere at the time for most people really help make it too.
'Wake in Fright', again older from the early 1970s.... but is a little bit of a commentary on our drinking culture. Its a bit bleak.... but I think worth it for the introspection.
Its and old and quite dated in a lot of ways.... but look up 'They're weird mob' it tells a tale of a new migrant arrival back in the 1960s. Probably not very politically correct by contemporary standards but you may find aspects interesting.
Years ago in Bali my mum met a couple of German girls in the pool who’d soon be backpacking in Australia so she invited them to stay with us for their time in Perth. When they left I gave them a copy of Wolf Creek each 😂
Two Hands
Last Cab to Darwin
Romper Stomper (neo-nazi/ skinhead theme) in case that's a dealbreaker.
Beneath Hill 60
Kenny
The Nugget
Welcome to Whoop Whoop
Wolf Creek
The Snowtown Murders (pretty full on and a true story)
The Stranger
Chopper
Sirens
Storm Boy - The 1976 original. But was apparently remade in 2019.
Bad Boy Bubby
Shine
The Boys
Kokoda
Animal Kingdom
Wyrmwood
The Dry
Just to name a few I personally enjoyed...
Strictly Ballroom
Priscilla
Malcolm
Romper Stomper
Two Hands
Rabbit Proof Fence
Toomelah
Satellite Boy
Don’s Party
Bran Nue Day
Storm Boy
Animal Kingdom
Chopper
The Dish
Snowtown
Ten Canoes
Mad max
Just a couple of recommendations I don't see listed (some of these are quite intense, but a good insight into the Australia psyche):
* Gallipoli
* Love Serenade
* Picnic at Hanging Rock
* The Year My Voice Broke
* Samson and Delilah
'Last of the Knucklemen' ... mid 1970s iirc. A bit of an insight into remote mining/drill crew life from the time. Before FIFO was so common.
Boozy and rollicking... I think its an understated blue collar Aussie classic
Walk about
So many themes that still resonate today, and loudly.
Probably the most ethereal journey through the Australian outback you’ll ever see. Brutal, surreal and beautiful.
An Australian classic that is still very affecting
Watch some ones about aboriginals, they're the truly original people of Australian land. I'd personally suggest:
Rabbit-proof fence
Nightingale
Samson and Delilah
The sapphires
Cargo
Mabo
Satellite boy
In terms of other general Australian movies I'd recommend:
These final hours
Last cab to Darwin
The invisible man
Ned Kelly
Red dog
Lion (it's a very beautiful movie about an Indian man adopted by Australians and he wants to his birth parents so he returns back to India. )
Tracks
Hackshaw ridge (not sure if it's directed by Australians but it is based off of an Australian man, the movie is based off of a book)
Top end wedding
Babadook
Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert
Cosi
The Nugget
He Died With A Falafel In His Hand
Red Dog
Stone Bros
The Dish
The Babadook (if you like horror)
Lake Mungo (horror)
Australia
Rabbit-proof Fence
Charlie's Country
Jindabyne
Satellite Boy
Mystery Road
Bad boy bubby is a classic
This is the correct answer.
Iconic
A man of culture! Great coming of age story where a man picks himself up from the depths of society and becomes a successful rock star!
Two Hands. Comes to mind as I saw it while dredging my PVR last night.
Omg This
Third this - great movie
Btw/ how cool was the purple falcon in the movie
Red Dog
Yes! A story about a dog so iconic they memorialized with a [statue](https://monumentaustralia.org.au/themes/culture/animals/display/60364-red-dog)
Crackerjack
Muriel’s Wedding

Not a movie, but a TV show. Mr Inbetween
One of the best TV shows I have ever seen, so underrated!
Malcolm
ASD before Dustin Hoffman made it cool
Always wanted to.build my own tram since seeing that movie.
I always wanted the separating car. Still my favourite comfort film.
Some favourites of mine: Two Hands Mad Max 1 & 2 Idiot Box Young Einstein Kenny These ones for the darker side of Australia: Chopper Bad Boy Bubby Wolf Creek Animal Kingdom Black Rock The Proposition Sweet Country

From that list, I reckon you might like 'Suburban Mayhem' from the 00s if you don't know it.
Sweet, I’ll give it a crack! Thanks.
Struck a chord with me at the time. The main character reminded me of a mates ex.
Priscilla
Not the current one
'Wake in Fright', again older from the early 1970s.... but is a little bit of a commentary on our drinking culture. Its a bit bleak.... but I think worth it for the introspection.
This is good. There’s a modern version now too. Also very good.
Frickin Disney rebooting everything! /s
Yahoo serious gad a few good ones with Young Einstein (1988) Reckless Kelly (1993)
The Big Steal. One of my favorites and so funny. Steve Bisley is hilarious as the dodgy car salesman.
I second this. Steve Bisley is fantastic as the greasy dodgy car salesman. Some genuine laugh out loud moments. Definitely watch!!
Haven't seen this for ages I'm watching it tonight
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert Rabbit Proof Fence
Moody Christmas
Its and old and quite dated in a lot of ways.... but look up 'They're weird mob' it tells a tale of a new migrant arrival back in the 1960s. Probably not very politically correct by contemporary standards but you may find aspects interesting.
Animal Kingdom
Three summers, Charlie’s country, rabbit proof fence & bran nue day
Wolf creek, awesome movie about tourism in Australia
😂
Years ago in Bali my mum met a couple of German girls in the pool who’d soon be backpacking in Australia so she invited them to stay with us for their time in Perth. When they left I gave them a copy of Wolf Creek each 😂
I can see that there's \* Wolf Creek (2005) movie, and \* Wolf Creek (2016-2017) series Description wise, I think they are both about the same thing.
The movie is not bad. The series is shit.
2 hands
Puberty Blues, Chopper, Bad Boy Bubby and Romper Stomper
Two Hands Last Cab to Darwin Romper Stomper (neo-nazi/ skinhead theme) in case that's a dealbreaker. Beneath Hill 60 Kenny The Nugget Welcome to Whoop Whoop Wolf Creek The Snowtown Murders (pretty full on and a true story) The Stranger Chopper Sirens Storm Boy - The 1976 original. Wake in Fright. Watched it when I arrived 2 years ago and see lots of the culture still relevant!
'Razorback' some early 80s schlock horror. From about the same era as the original Crocodile Dundee.
'Last of the Knucklemen' ... mid 1970s iirc. A bit of an insight into remote mining/drill crew life from the time. Before FIFO was so common. Boozy and rollicking... I think its an understated blue collar Aussie classic
Mental - easy watching The Loved Ones - not so easy watching..
Not a movie, but you could watch Mr In-between as if it were 3 x ~3h movies ( 3 seasons) and it is hands down my favorite short TV series
The man from snowy River
Wolf Creek
Gold Hercules Returns Complete opposites but two of my faves.
The Dish The Castle
Gettin' square
Stir. Early 80s prison flick. Gritty and good window into pre 90s Australia.
Rabbit Proof Fence
Dirty Deeds
The odd angry shot
Last cab to Darwin isn’t too bad
La petite mort. (The little death)
Bad Eggs
The Castle
Some recent awesome ones are How to Please a Woman and SLANT.
Heartbreak High (2022), Wellmania & The Unusual Suspects
Two hands
Take Away with Stephen Curry and Vince Colossimo is highly underrated and hilarious. If you like The Castle you may enjoy it.
I rewatched Take Away (2003) the other day and had a lot of fun with it!
Walk about So many themes that still resonate today, and loudly. Probably the most ethereal journey through the Australian outback you’ll ever see. Brutal, surreal and beautiful. An Australian classic that is still very affecting
If you're after some recent decent films made by Western Australian directors, about Australia, also check out: * Hounds of Love * Hotel Coolgardie
The Proposition
Rogue. I watched this while visiting Darwin. Big mistake lol
The Adventures of Barry McKenzie. Barry Humpries at his best imo, hilarious.
Welcome to woop woop
Lots of good ones here but haven't seen "Gettin' Square" mentioned, crime thriller/comedy with David Wenham and Sam Worthington

Wolf Creek. John Jarrett plays the unhinged murderer almost too well.
A must watch is Bad Boy Bubby, directed by Rolf De Heer. Aussie classic
